“Most of us can’t imagine what it will be like when the whole ocean system collapses,” says Colin Angus, CTO and cofounder Open Ocean Robotics, a tech startup that makes autonomous boats.
The effects of ocean collapse cannot be overstated. If our oceans fail, then humans will experience suffering on an unprecedented scale and life on earth, as we currently know it, ceases to exist. And that’s the future we face if we don’t do a better job of protecting our oceans.
That’s why Angus and his wife Julie co-founded Open Ocean Robotics. The company’s fleet of autonomous boats are designed to manlessly patrol the ocean, collecting a variety of critical data.
“Our goal is to help industries operate sustainably on the ocean,” Julie says. “What we can’t measure, we can’t protect. What we can’t see, we can’t change. If we don’t understand the impacts we’re having on our oceans, we’ll never change our behavior.”

After watching SmarterEveryDay's series on the Coast Guard, I wonder how many multitudes of applications this could have for the USCG in all of the missions that they do, from law enforcement, to search and rescue operations, and so much more. What a fantastic collaboration that would be! Curious if it's already being discussed...

It's a great question (and a great series!). Found this article - it appears that the Coast Guard is working on deploying drone ships, but they often use off-the-shelf tech or that developed for other branches of the military, so it's entirely possible that this could fulfill a role. The key problem they're seeking to solve is the same addressed by this technology: there is a ton of ocean to cover and monitor, and using large manned patrol ships is expensive and limited in range. www.nationaldefensemagazine.org/articles/2021/3/11/just-in-new-coast-guard-team-to-flesh-out-unmanned-systems-requirements

    • @freethink

Understandable question! It also provides the capability to monitor and respond to wider stretches of ocean. Remember, if the speaker is being used, it means that someone on the other end has observed the illegal behavior going on. So they could potentially alert law enforcement, record the vessel information so that they can be held accountable once they reach land, etc.

Interesting idea! As we see an increase in drones and robots in warfare, so we may see them in law enforcement roles with 'less lethal' capabilities and it's interesting to consider what those could be. Of course, it's always necessary and a challenge to make sure that those measures don't risk causing death or disaster themselves.

I generally agree with this video, but this particular statement is a bit sloppy.
What is often stated is that more people have been to the deepest part of the ocean than have walked on the moon - this is more precise, and is true as far as I know.
Not knowing much about the some things about deepest parts of the ocean, compared with some similar things about the moon, is largely true. For example, that plane being lost somewhere in the southern oceans - if the wreckage was on the surface of the moon it would probably be easier to find.

We currently grow enough food to feed a population of 10 Billion people, so no one would starve if they couldn’t eat Marine animals, we just need to eat our natural Herbivore diet. Then the 80% of world Grain and Legumes( +1/3 of commercially caught fish) wouldn’t need to be fed to the 70 Billion animals unnecessarily bred for eating every year!. Which would mean we could leave Marine life alone to repopulate to the numbers they should be! Which would permanently sequester vast amounts of CO2.
