Underwater Drone Race Intensifies As US Tests Huge ‘Manta Ray’ That Can Operate With Refuelling

- The US DARPA conducted the first full-scale sea test of an advanced underwater drone capable of hibernating on the seabed. The ‘Manta Ray’ prototype, produced by aviation giant Northrop Grumman, is part of a US Navy project. The new uncrewed underwater vehicle (UUV) is aimed at creating a new class of underwater drones for extended missions. One photograph of the Manta Ray showed it sitting adjacent to a support boat, underscoring just how large this drone actually is. The UUV is designed to move through the ocean “for very long periods of time” without supervision or the need to refuel. Watch the video to know more.

Being able to use sonar from the bottom up while US already has the worlds oceans covered with sensors means it'll be super difficult to hide. USA already knows if a rocket is launched from an RPG literally anywhere in the world and can go back in time. Imagine what technological advantage this will bring. And it doesnt need refueling is incredible in itself.

Most of the research has already been done and upgraded over time with tech advancements. The only thing remaining is where and when they decide to go into production. It makes more sense than building it out and having it go obsolete on you.

They are good with labor though... produce things quickly and cheaply... sometimes too cheaply and the quality shows (all those exploding EVs are just today's example). The best phones are designed in the US, Japan, and South Korea... from design to chips powering them to the operating systems running them.

Why does it have wings? Isn't this contra productive underwater? Really weird design. Underwater crafts are efficient in travelling underwater. The Manta uses those wing to generate trust, while this wont be using the wings to generate trust. No brainer for me.
