Awesome ! Love seeing the A833 parts already being helpful. A well executed powershift is one of the sweetest experiences for a true gearhead, I remember how much fun it was when I learned, and luckily didn't break anything. (Broken all kinds of parts in other silly behavior) That dash, I gotta give my two penny's worth... Black wrinkle paint the metal dash and hang the stripped out bezel and trim back on it. The personality of a particular car is hugely defined by the dash and steering wheel. Love the steering wheel you've got and just having the bezel (blanked out gauges) and trim nice and clean and in place will keep it looking good, with the essential 3 gauge panel placed as needed. I really dig the concept of this project, looking forward to seeing it rockin' !!👍
I like that. Like I said, I love the look of it. But realized that none of the gauges are going to work, so having the whole cluster seemed silly. Might just do that! And thanks again for your measurable contribution to this and many projects to come.

Nice to see the Dartacuda again. Another commenter suggested making a road racer, point of history Bob Tulius finished first in class with a 66 Dart gt. In the inaugural T/A championship race. Second overall. Love the drag cars but old A bodies make great road huggers too
As a pair of early A body’s owner, I appreciate that you, as a perceived expert, enjoy them too and I end up learning a bunch about my own car(s). all of the best factory A body parts fit into and onto on these cars and you end up with the lightest weight @ factory version of a mopar as well *though that might not necessarily be true of a Barracuda version. Early A is A -OK 👍
Definitely correct on the fill foam, they used it in the 2010-2013 dodge challenger rockers and lower quarters and their already rusting out! That's the main reason I got rid of the black 2011 and red 2012 Challenger's I had they both were starting to rust out!

I ended up driving a Semi tractor and a 5 axle dump trailer. but it had a good am/fm stereo Then in the winter I did mechanical repairs and, you guessed it, body repairs. One truck had so many rust holes in the roof it snowed inside the truck in the winter, and a bungie cord hooked into one of the roof holes and on the other end, to the door mirror to keep the door from falling off It got a new roof skin and a replacement door shell, so I ended up still doing bodywork in a warm shop and driving the rest of the year. Replacement floorplans weren't redilly available, small patch pannels were as good as it got. When I did rust repair on cars. Yes, I do believe you're spot on there. It wS also around the time when racers were using the clutch-Turbo 400 setups. That was before your time but you may have seen them in old car magazines
Not familiar with that one, but I’m sure it’s the same ball game as the “ClutchFlite.” I’ve never seen one of those in action but have seen a few pictures of components.
Just to prove what a geek I am, that’s an ‘80s/‘90s Mazda gas pedal. So you were correct with Ford, the Escort and Probe were Mazdas. And you’ve gotta love rust natures weight reduction.
Love where this build is going, and holy s*^t, that Hurst shifter is amazing. The drivetrain you've got lined up is checking all the boxes. Oh man, I've dealt with removing that purple tint a few years ago on a late '80s BMW I picked up (and still have), kind of like the German slant 6 ; ). I'll never forget that smell. It came right back as soon as you mentioned it.
I ran Vertical Gate shifters in my street racers in the 1970's and 1980's. If running the 833, run all of the racing upgrades in it. There are plenty of A-body shifter tunnels around, or a B-body one could be modified and fitted. Several of my Mopars were converted from automatic to 4-speeds. There are a lot of 3 on the floor Dusters and don't forget the 4-speed overdrive Aspens and Volare's, including 4-door models. With the V-Gate shifter, you only need one T-handle pull for first gear, then it goes into 2nd without holding the T-handle, then it goes forward into 3rd, then back to 4th. The T-handle is used to get 1st gear, but doesn't have to be held while shifting into 2nd, or it shouldn't have to be held. That one looks like one of the newer mixmasters. Mr' Gasket used that style T-handle, but was later bought by Hurst and that one has a Hurst shifter handle. Traditionally Mr' Gasket had larger diameter shifter rods than Hurst, but they are the same company now. The factory Mopar Hurst shifters have even larger diameter shifter rods though. I would bend smaller diameter steel rods along the shifter rods and weld them to the original shifter rods to stiffen them. If I remember correctly, Mopar Hurst shifter rods were 0.500", Mr. Gasket rods were 0.430" (0.435"?) and aftermarket Hurst rods were 0.375" in diameter.
The humps are reproduced, buying one would not be a problem at all. But if it doesn’t fit anyway, and I’m not going to weld it to the floor as they intend, why not build one from scratch? I’ve done it before. The four speed for this will likely end up being a “slick shift” setup. It doesn’t get much more racey than that.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Reproduced? We didn't use reproductions in 1970's! :) I've built them from scratch also. In the 1990's I did use a reproduction Ram Charger air cleaner housing though. Slick shift mod is usually removing every other tooth from the synchronizers. I would also use an early (1970 and older) side cover, with 1971 and newer steel shift forks, modified to fit the old side cover, by grinding down the nipples on the steel forks, to mimic the early bronze forks.
@@BrandonLeeBrownMr. Gasket bought Hurst. My preference is the Hurst Ram Rod. If you're using a "non modified" floor, you don't have to jack it up as much because it's much more compact as I've previously stated. Daily drive mine for 3 years before some old lady rear ended my Duster on Christmas Eve Day 1984. Also had a 3,000 lb Ram 10.95 clutch in it with a LOT of linkage mods & firewall bracing. A true leg workout at stoplights.
@@vincentenk4449 Yes, one bought the other then a larger company became the parent company. I've run the V-gate with a just hole cut in a column shift tunnel, a 1969 Road Runner. With that car, I later switched it to automatic, with a Winters shifter on a mounting plate.
@Jamie..While doing the mini tub think about a cage too and remember it passes thru the fuel cell firewall. If you haven't thrown the door and quarter panels away you could get some thin aluminum for panels. Just secure them thoroughly and they don't rattle. My El Camino has them and never rattled in the 10 years on the road.
I’m looking forward to watching more of this build! Regarding your automotive application of spray foam rant: you know what has factory spray foam in their quarters? Late model Challengers. My ‘09 R/T revealed quarter sized thru rust in ‘16; by ‘22 the rust was all along the bottom edge, from the door opening, along the wheel lips to the bumper cover - both sides. But’s that not why I got rid of it - the killer was the bolts holding the engine cradle rusting off. Learned my lesson, though - replaced it with a new ‘22 Shaker…..
I can hardly wait until you teach us to flex the rods for the Trunk of 68-70 Chargers & Roadrunners. I always wanted to make mine one notch tighter, but I did not know the secret. Carry on sir.
Pre-dating the Hurst Competition Plus shifter was the Hurst Super Shifter, used by Chrysler in 1964 and 1965. In 1966 Chrysler wanted a shifter with reverse lockout and used GM Inland shifters from 1966 to mid-1968. Ford used some inland shifters in this time period too. The GM Inland shifters were disappointing compared to the Hurst shifters and Chrysler switched to beefed up Hurst shifters in mid-1968.
I’m in my mid 50’s and just learned why my 1972 super beetle had those rust spots that I tried to fill with caulking…….i was 16 so cut me some slack and it actually matched the exterior white paint!
If it had a automatic transmission shifter on steering column, it would be easy to know it was an automatic transmission, one of my three 68s was an automatic with shifter on steering column, that one was medium blue with black vinyl top, and two barrel. Really fun playing in snow with it, and would cherp rear tires shifting into 2nd at full throttle which surprised everyone. Drove through almost a foot of snow in a plowed corn field, after sliding off the end of a gravel side road in an ice storm going home one night, hit brakes lightly about 50 yards from end of road and didn't slow down one bit at all, fortunately was only going about 5 mph, right into the ditch along the crossroad that the side road ended at. Fortunately there was only bushes and young small trees that bent over when the 3000 pound Charger flew on top of them, landed with a tree bent over under rear and kept the rear lifted off the ground. Had to jack up the rear as much as possible, and pushed the rear sideways and forward slowly until it was back on ground, then drove out the cornfield through the farmers back yard to his driveway and back on the road again. Fortunately no fence around the field and his backyard, it was quite late at night and everyone asleep. My third 68 I bought without engine and was brown, I put a cheap junkyard 318 in it and painted it white because white shows waves in body work less than any color, black shows the most, it had an automatic shifter in the floor console.
Cool video, cool looking build man. I had wild visions of a actual fish livery, they are white on the unders and a transparent blue on the top. They have that wild reverse jaw and specific hard fins sticking up in a couple spots. You know it is that kind of thing that really hooks a kid when vehicles have extra personality like that. One of my favorite things was the Tiger shark mouth aircraft. Of course the cobras were huge for me as well. That original movie death race 2000 was just so amazing, stalone and carradine, snake or dragon car, bull car, running over pedestrians. Oh those were the days. Excited to see progress on this one! Will be looking forward to it. We prolly won't see it again for a while, and I think that is the best part. You got us waiting on what like 6 or 7 builds? Very ADHD friendly. lol I haven't been able to stick with projects very long, my ADHD has a super short fuse. Makes watching these way easier than actually doing them. Seems like you always have a new video up every time I check in on this youtube. Thanks for all the hard work!
Nice! At first I thought that was Uncle Tony's "propane powered" Belvedere from the thumbnail. When or if you both actually FINISH building them, that would be a good race to watch!
Glad you are going on this one. Like the Dart front end. If you go for a straight axle, a la Billy Jacobs, for example, how about a tasteful 2 percent wheelbase alteration?
I love the fact that you're doing something different @ early Cuda as opposed to standard 67 - 76 A body!👍 One question. Will you be going back to Valiant front sheet metal? It would seem more appropriate! Best wishes with all of your projects!!🙏
No, I really like the Dart fenders with the go fast scoops. They’ve been on the car forever, they’re already painted, and I don’t have the Plymouth parts. I do have a grille but that’s it. It’ll stay Dart for this lifetime.
You're welcome. You will need a roll bar I believe. Maybe it could incorporate brackets for the trunk cut off plate. And a 5 point harness. Fiberglas buckets may not be period correct, I'm not sure, but fabricated aluminum would be pretty cool. She's gonna be great.
The Junkerup channel just did a hell of a build on a nascar inspired charger. He did some really nice sheet metal work in the rear section. Maybe watch his videos to get some ideas and inspiration for your barracuda. His car was in pretty bad shape. I think it turned out friggin amazing!
I once thought this was an ugly car...I love the 69... But now some years later I love this body style.cant wait to see that little giant in there!! I'm a lot jealous!!!!!
Garbage Can is going to bring a can of whoop ass to the track soon! Its too bad the floor was so hacked by previous ownership. Thankfully it looks salvageable. That Vertigate shifter is rad! Not a cheap piece on the aftermarket either. Garbage can is the perfect candidate to be a race car. Decent enough to look presentable at the track, but ratty enough you don't mind stripping it of weight and beating on it at the race track. Looking forward to more progress on this one.
@@DeadDodgeGarageYeah and theoretically I could buy mine back, me and Dave have been trading this barracuda back and forth since I was 14. Neither of us have bothered actually finishing it
Jamie; Your on the right track if your going to race that car a 1/4 mile at a time. Take anything that you don’t need and rip it out of the car to lose weight…except THE DASH! Working or not, much of the personality of that car is in that dash. Someone did a real hack job with those front floor pans..replace them with lite aluminum sheets sprayed to keep them from rotting out again…lot of potential for that car to be a real track burner….you going to NOS it?
I like it! How about fixing those quarter windows in place and removing the regulators. Not exactly sure how the factory did it on those cheap Challenger’s and Barracudas, but you’ll figure it out, and then of course, seat belt webbing straps fort the front windows. You could cut out the spare tire well, suspend a cell beneath the car, with a flat access door on the trunk floor. I don’t know what the rules for rear mounted battery are, if you have to have a bulkhead for it, or if an AGM gets you around that.
Thanks, fun even if I wince at the thought of removing Mopar things from a classic Mopar with no expectation of their return. A happy Mopar is a complete Mopar! But a faster Mopar is also a happy Mopar, so looking forward to how this all turns out ;)
I like where this is going. Gentlemen, if you're considering going all apeshiyat on a Mopar, great! Get one without a "pedigree" like this Barracuda to beat on though. This is how it's done. - Ed on the Ridge
Had a 69 340 Dart once upon a time, it was also owned by my oldest brother when new, and got banned from the local drag strip... Sold it, last time I saw it current owner had put way way too much money into it and she, if she ever gets done, will look just like she did new and run and even stop better. I really don't miss her, but would be nice to see her again, you know, like an old girlfriend that you know is nuts but sure was hot, and still you discover still is, and still nuts and someone else's problem, like the car... Gonna be a fun build...
Your car, but the dash looks nice in there... just update the gauges in the pod with what needs to be there. All conveniently round. Agreed on the flat steel dash... yuch. Keep us updated on this one... keep doin' what ya doin'
I had a barracuda for a few days long ago as part of a deal i brokered. Ir went to make a Hemi under glass drag car. Mid engined rocket!! Biggest built blown. Hemi ive ever seen in the back seat. Hella good firewall and roll cage behind driver. Should see if the old timer has it still!
When I bought my wife a 71 Super Beetle that was in storage for 9 years. The foam had started rotting the passenger side out. I dont know why they couldnt have made the vents function to help move air in the engine bay. Managed to dig quite a bit out
I'm glad you'll be getting to reuse that bracket that Tim's friend made. That sort of thing is basically what I expect my entire legacy to be, one day, hopefully. (As in, "Hopefully I'll have even *that* much of a legacy.") Gods but I hate those torsion bar hood hinges. Also, yeah, foam filler. Bleah. That's a lot of rust (at least to my rust-phobic New Mexican eyes) but hey, at least it wasn't full of rodent droppings. I've run quite a few squirrel poop rodeos. It's kind of a wonder I've never caught the bubonic plague or hantavirus.
I remember seeing ignition accessories / fuse options on a glove box door replacement panel. It was removable to service & kinda cool. I'm a goof & probably a bad idea so jus trying a uplifting idea. Hate seeing ya discouraged and appreciate even the little wins.
Haven't owned a mopar in 40 years, but always wait for ur show.😊
“Did I do that??!?” - me also, every time I’m working on a car I haven’t touched in a while.
Hell yeah though, excited to see this one.
100%! Good idea. Drag race with the Barracuda. Put the Demon back to stock…. Fast and fun street car….. The Demon is soooo beautifully stock. Matching numbers. Documentation….. Etc.
Exactly! I want to go racing and improve my skills, but I don’t need to beat on the Demon more. That was never my plan to begin with.
You got that right….It’s also a great investment as these cars still have a lot of room to go through the roof…Wait and see what it’s worth in 10 years. Whose idea was it to stash the broadcast sheet under the seat?
And just like that, Jamie improves his 60ft time by 3/10 by eliminating the weight of the massive fiberglass floor 😂😂😂

I can not wait to see this thing rip!
Had a Mr Gasket Verta Gate shifter in a 68 Nova. Once setup worked great, loved it.
Its amazing how much time in this hobby is spent cleaning.
A roll bar has always been in the plan.
Dude I learned that today. I had no idea.
I can hardly wait until you teach us to flex the rods for the Trunk of 68-70 Chargers & Roadrunners. I always wanted to make mine one notch tighter, but I did not know the secret. Carry on sir.
I mean I’ve done it… carefully…
@@DeadDodgeGarage Yeah hahaha I mean I tried, I just didn't want it to get away from me and then not be able to get it back in place.
I loosend mine and regretted it.Used a ratchet strap and a pry bar to put it back, thoughts of fishooks flashed in my mind.
@@samuelgoodman2825 LOL! See?! See what I mean?! It looks like a giant
Man-Mouse Trap! lolin'
Badass. Looking foward to the 4speed build video. And the eventual 66 fury video.
Well, of course it would. But again, the column was changed, so we have no way of knowing.
@DeadDodgeGarage
Steering column changed?
It's a deep cover up!
Rats!!
Oh, I’d definitely consider that.
@@DeadDodgeGarageGood. I'm guessing you have an A100 truck axle, or know someone who does.
It's SOOOO weird seeing an early Barracuda without the original "Cicada face" grill... I don't hate it, but it would take some gettin' used to
It did take some getting used to. Haha.
Well, the Bee makes it OK.
@@SchoolforHackers I was diggin' that too
I like it BETTER.
For the race car look. Dash pad delete helps with the “Look”. Ooops you got to it!
I sure did. Haha.
@ yes you returned to that area later on! Sorry just trying to help. Ok I’ll shut up now! Bye.
Although possibly a little pricey, the rugged ridge brand fixed back Jeep seats near some resemblance to early A100 seats. May be worth a look here.
I had a V Gate in a 72 Demon. Great for 1/4 mile. Not so great around town.
@DeadDodgeGarage OK. Just thought I'd ask. Take care!
You're welcome. You will need a roll bar I believe. Maybe it could incorporate brackets for the trunk cut off plate. And a 5 point harness. Fiberglas buckets may not be period correct, I'm not sure, but fabricated aluminum would be pretty cool. She's gonna be great.
I’ve got all kinds of ideas for that.
Well, that was quite the floor removal
JAMIE- small handheld steam cleaner is the only way to remove window tint, can get it off in one piece, and the residue comes off easy
Great way I’m sure, but hard to say it’s the only way when my dumb way works 😅
@DeadDodgeGarage just hate to see a good man struggle, the steam cleaner helps a lot with other issues of old cars that sat in a field forever..
Looks and sounds like a quick call to AMD for a nice full floor.😊
They don’t make them. I said that.
Race car! Nice!
Makes me miss my barracuda
I apologize for any emotional hardship this may cause… there are more out there though.
@@DeadDodgeGarageYeah and theoretically I could buy mine back, me and Dave have been trading this barracuda back and forth since I was 14. Neither of us have bothered actually finishing it
Jamie;
Your on the right track if your going to race that car a 1/4 mile at a time.
Maybe some day. But I would need a second plate. Haha.
That’s what I’m thinking for the back windows!
Holy crap Jaime that floor was probably one of the worst. I’ve seen surprising you got out in one piece. Nice job. Good video again.
Oh, I’ve seen much worse…
@ oh I bet you have buddy lotta work but it’s gonna be pretty busy and when it’s done can’t wait to see it together whenever that is lol
Of course I meant bitching not busy stupid dictation have a good day Jane
Thanks, fun even if I wince at the thought of removing Mopar things from a classic Mopar with no expectation of their return. A happy Mopar is a complete Mopar!
But a faster Mopar is also a happy Mopar, so looking forward to how this all turns out ;)
You know I agree - in most cases. But so many pieces of this were wrong anyway…
This should be a nice racer when your done
Use Vice Grips to hold the razor blade. Yes a RamRod😜
I like where this is going. Gentlemen, if you're considering going all apeshiyat on a Mopar,
great!
Rad. I’m going to put an engine in the back of a Barracuda. But not a 426 Hemi, and not this Barracuda.
It was a nice dashboard, it gave an all-business look to the place. The world has more A bodies you can put it on someday.
You know it.
36:43 Is that a NP203 lever? Looks just like the one in my '77.
When I bought my wife a 71 Super Beetle that was in storage for 9 years. The foam had started rotting the passenger side out. I dont know why they couldnt have made the vents function to help move air in the engine bay. Managed to dig quite a bit out
Whoever said that tach mount is "not worth a nickel" was incorrect.
Don't low ball me, I know what I got, almost made me spill my beer I laughed so hard. :)
Nailed it 😂
"I know you were asking 39 cents firm BUT will you take 35 cents in 7-11 gift cards and ship it to me?"
Is it possible that the seats go on specific sides? And you tried passenger on the driver's side?
They *do* go on specific sides, and you will know you’ve got it right when the seat adjustment control is on the outside 😁
I'm glad you cut your hair! Bonus points for the added weight reduction lol
Lighter racing seat might be a good idea
Agreed
Those "trim spears" look like an outside molding off of an old, big finned car. They're just thrown in because they look pretty good.
That’s what it looks like to me too. It’s the specific application I’m curious about.
I remember seeing ignition accessories / fuse options on a glove box door replacement panel. It was removable to service & kinda cool. I'm a goof & probably a bad idea so jus trying a uplifting idea. Hate seeing ya discouraged and appreciate even the little wins.
That’s interesting. Not sure where I will mount a panel yet. Won’t take much to run it. Will be putting the MSD box under the dash somewhere.
@DeadDodgeGarage ty for replying
All I know is its in good hands,
I'd rig something to keep the rear quarter windows up and delete the whole window crank mechanisms.
That’s the plan!
And now I’m here
Nailed it
I miss the old A bodies and and a 65-66 Dart or Barracuda would be a fun retirement project
