Most of the words or characters in the Chinese language evolved from drawings. Each character represents one or more meanings. In the era of typewriters, Chinese lost out to English because it was impossible for any typewriter to print Chinese characters. But technology has greatly helped the Chinese language. We can now type Chinese characters using a simple normal keyboard and print Chinse characters using a normal printer. Furthermore, if you look at the screen of your mobile phone or computer, all apps are mainly represented by icons. It looks like technology is favoring icons and characters instead of alphabetic letters. On the other hand, knowing Chinese may help in grasping science and technology.

"No one's really alone, but exists in a relationship with other characters." What a wonderful way to end this exposition, with a pun on 'character' meaning the writing system but also the people whose culture and identity is so dependent on it, as well as on their relation to other human beings - inside and outside of China. So it is sad that, since this video was made, the number of people in the West studying Chinese language and writing has plummeted. This writing system could help bring the West and China closer together, just as it brought many Asian people together as she says. Sadly, our politicians lack the good will to help encourage such communication.

It can be said that Chinese is a visual language and English is a phonetic / audio language. Users can read / see Chinese more efficiently than reading / seeing English, whereas users can listen to and pronounce English more efficiently than doing so in Chinese. Drivers in a Chinese street can react faster to sign boards written in Chinese characters than those in a US street reacting to signboards written in English. On the other hand, the names of places and persons can be described efficiently in English using alphabetic letters but the Chinese names of them are clumsy and approximated, e.g. San Francisco
