Just watched your video as I just bought the torqeedo 1103 LS shaft for my fishing boat.
Yes a bit expensive but well worth it.
Certainly won't be going back to lifting a leisure battery up a dam wall again with 70 steps.

The E in EPIRB stands for ”emergency” and not electronic...

9:00 So when you haul the sprayhood over, will the AIS antenna be under the hood? How sharp are the edges of that metal ribbon? Could it possibly cut the spray hood or the bladder?
Really informative video, thanks. Deserves waaaay more views. Had to laugh at the AED (antenna erectile disfunction).

I'm a windsurfer for holland and when i surf in a river or lake i always take my phone and an ais beacon with me. The phone is for alarming and the ais to be found. When i go surfing on the sea i also take my Plb with me. Just to be sure.

EPIRB is emergency position indicating radio beacon, not electronic.

100% correct. thanks for the correction! after a few takes making things I only have 50% control of the words coming out of my mouth and sailing as you know is awash with acronyms!

So for coastal cruising and within 6 to 7 miles offshore max you would recommend an AIS system?

unfortunately, the standards didn't permit combined AIS/EPIRB until this year :( McMurdo made a combined unit, but it's boat-mounted and far too big for a lifejacket

@olivierleduc7305, Just saw one at West Marine, "ACR ResQLink AIS". It's a little long, but narrow enough to fit on a PFD.

difference between the two the EPIRB alerts the authorities while the AIS is not an official alerting medium. But when this alarms on boats people should not ignore it.

exactly right, and it’s then up to the individual sailor (or the skipper of the sailor’s boat) to identify which emergency reporting method is most likely to lead to a positive outcome. thanks for the comment

That's why I always take my ais combined with my phone with me. So phone to alert and ais to be found

Is there an EPIRB with AiS beacon attached..... Best of both worlds?

    • @CSMtheMariner

Hey Peter, I don’t believe there is although I could imagine this kind of combination being a possibility just as the 121.5Mhz SART transponder was amalgamated with both the 406Mhz original EPIRB design AND a GPS to create a modern EPIRB unit.
I wonder if there would be any transmission issues through a single antenna? it certainly would reduce the ‘extras’ hanging off my lifejacket!

You keep calling that an EPIRB and it is not an EPIRB. It's a PLB, Personal Locator Beacon. And you call yourself a trainer? lol
