    Join me for an unboxing and review of the ACR ResQLink 400 emergency personal locator beacon. You need a personal locator beacon or other satellite communication device if you spend time in the backcountry. It is not uncommon to be without cell coverage in wilderness areas while camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, etc. Without a reliable way to contact help in the event of a serious injury/illness or becoming lost, the consequences may be fatal. A personal locator beacon like this ACR ResQLink 400 allows you to summon help anywhere in the world without needing a cell signal.

    Another wonderful tool is the backtrack GPS. Not getting lost is your best bet. Great thing about sat beacon is they can find you in the middle of the Gulf.

      That is a helpful feature as well. I have used that on my Garmin while exploring in the van. I do have a GPS app on my phone that allows me to do that as well, though I don't know that I have actually used it hiking. It would be very helpful to avoid getting lost.

    That’s the one reason why I’m afraid to go venturing out past my comfort zone. That makes me nervous since I’m notorious w my direction and orientation. Besides the initial cost, resqlink is definitely worth having for that just-in-case life or death emergency. I also had to go n watch what you carry in your backpack video. Very informative n especially like the little solar panel idea. Thank you!

      That little solar panel isn't something that I use a lot, but it does come in handy on longer hikes when I am shooting a lot of video and running down batteries. I always figured it would be nice in an emergency too as I could recharge everything if I was stuck longer than planned.

      I have seen some handheld GPS units that have a breadcrumb feature - you hit a button every so often and you can tell it to go back the way you came. Have never seen one in action, though.

      @@shrikeofterven6006 Even a cheap hiking GPS like a Garmin eTrex will create a detailed track on the screen that shows where you've been. You can easily follow it back. I've been using that device for over 20 years.

      I'm amazed by the technology! Push one button and GPS coordinates are sent thousands of miles into space, back to a ground station, and search and rescue is deployed. Pretty amazing.

    I had looked into these. Some with the subscription also text messages. But, not like a cellphone...these are very expensive as far as texting goes. When I ended up needing one I was lucky and was within cell range. Had to use GPS coordinates to be found. Now, I'm waiting to see if I recover enough to ever need one again. One of these will be the first things packed. I've already used up my luck in having cell service!

      I've had a few times where I was out in the wilderness and had a bit of a situation develop (usually Montana). Fortunately I always had enough gear that I could have made it through the night and finished getting out in the morning. Those occasions were in places where the only way to get a cell signal would have been to climb a mountain! LOL It does provide some peace of mind though knowing that if everything goes horribly wrong despite my preparations at least I have a way to call for help. Meanwhile, I sure hope to never need it!

      Thanks, Rich! I do like not having to worry about a subscription, but having the peace of mind that if something goes horribly wrong in the middle of nowhere I will at least be able to call for help. I think it's a perfect complement to the daypack with emergency gear because it usually takes at least hours for search and rescue to deploy and then hopefully find someone.

      It has been on my list for a few years because I see so many stories of people becoming lost or injured in the wilderness and being in a real bad situation if they don't have cell service to call for help. It's definitely one of those things you hope to never need, but it could be a lifesaver if something went wrong. I'm usually hiking alone as well so unless someone happens to come upon me I would be on my own to call for help or make it out of the wilderness.

      I do spot basic monthly.... I frequently just get up and go so I like the device always accessible...... It just depends on individual lifestyles.... My spot locator has always worked when regularly tested. It has basic checkin mode giving contacts GPS coordinates, non emergency help as in breakdown and full SOS......$11 a month is OK for me.....

    • @RobertWitham
      @RobertWitham  2 роки тому +2

      I do like that the Spot allows you to send GPS coordinates to a few select people. If my travel style were different that would actually be important to me. As it is though, I may go hiking in the wilderness with no phone service, but I almost always camp where I have a cell signal for work reasons so I can just text family to let them know where I'm at.

      Thanks for watching! I'm glad you found this helpful. There are other options for personal locator beacons. The Spot, for example, requires a subscription, but it does allow you to send an email to a few people with coordinates at any time. That feature could be helpful if you were camping in places without cell coverage and wanted to let family or friends know your location. In my case, I often travel and hike in remote places, but almost always camp with a cell signal so the ResQLink does everything I need it to do.

    Thank you so much for the great information! Did not know that this particular model did not have a subscription that you had to do. I have been looking for something in case of an emergency since I do have a disability and a service dog if something were to happen and we were out of an area where there is cell service. May God watch over you on all of your journeys and keep you safe.

    • @RobertWitham
      @RobertWitham  2 роки тому +1

      I liked that this unit did not require a monthly subscription. I always try to limit how many recurring monthly expenses I have. The upshot of a device like the Spot is that you can send a non-emergency message to a few people with your coordinates. This feature isn't really important to me though as I typically only camp in places where I have cell coverage and just wanted something for emergencies - mostly when I am out hiking or exploring.

      @@RobertWitham I added my sister on to my garage so she can check in on my truck at any time and know where I am. So that's a good thing she always can look at a map and see where I am. But then I look and I think which one if I'm out of it it's going to be the easiest for my service dog to maneuver. She does a lot of things a lot of people don't think she can do but I don't know if I want to try and trust her to get an antenna unwrapped and up and push the button whereas with the other she can just get the cover off the SOS and get the button pushed. Have to figure something out where she can practice with something and unwrap it and point it up. But I do like the idea of just paying it up front and that's it except for registration.

      Thanks, Debbie! I do think this is one of those things that is easy to overlook and not think about. I read so many stories of hikers, etc becoming lost or injured in the wilderness and rescuers often don't even know where to start looking - once they actually find out the person is missing. To be able to call for help from anywhere in the world with the push of one button is just amazing.

    Thank you for making this video: nice to see the actual size of the thing in your hands, and to know it comes with a velcro strap to hook onto a belt or PFD. May I ask if the strobe activates automatically, or does it require you to be conscious and push a button?

    • @RobertWitham
      @RobertWitham  2 роки тому

      I believe the strobe activates when the one button is pushed to call for help. It would require being able to access the device and push one button, but other than that it is all automatic.

    Wonder how much the rescuers would charge you for being rescued? $5,000...$20,000? I've heard of people being in car accidents (not in the back country) and getting charged lots of money for being air-lifted (helicoptered) to a hospital. Would be interesting to know. Do you know anyone who has ever used one?

    • @RobertWitham
      @RobertWitham  2 роки тому +1

      I have always heard of people who call for help in legitimate emergencies as not being charged (though I'm sure if they have insurance it would be billed). On the other hand, I have heard quite a few stories in recent years of people who frivolously use an emergency locator being hit with hefty charges to cover the cost of the unnecessary rescue. Medical helicopters are unfortunately in a category by themselves. It seems a lot of those are operated by big corporations these days and they are famous for charging tens of thousands of dollars!

    • @serenityjewel
      @serenityjewel 2 роки тому

      It's probably good to know but I could really care less. I can't imagine thinking "Oh, they're going to charge me $150,000 to rescue me. I can't afford that. I'm just going to die." They can charge whatever they want, I'll deal with it when I'm safe and not about to die.

    Appropriate emergency responder? Police? How do they know who's Appropriate?

    • @RobertWitham
      @RobertWitham  2 роки тому +2

      Presumably based on GPS location. This is really a search and rescue device rather than a 911 "Help, someone's assaulting me" type of device. A beacon activated at sea would trigger a response by the Coast Guard or Navy whereas an activation in the mountains or desert would result in local search and rescue being dispatched at least, but possibly also law enforcement or EMS depending on local protocols.

      @@RobertWitham Correct! The signal goes to a Mission Control Center that decides if your SOS signal is real, or an accidental send. I believe they try to contact you via the info on your registration. If they can't clear the signal with that contact, they will dispatch the agency best equipped to help you based on your location.
