      It's crazy how expensive it is to study in the US... I think my studies in Belgium cost something like 10k max. BUT, I had a scholarship due to social reasons, so I have to thank our social security system a well. Nonetheless, for non-scholarship students it's like 1000 euro subscription per year. I also never stayed in student housing, as it was only a 30 min train ride, so that adds the cost of commuting, let's say 5 years at 350 euro = 1750 euro. Then study books: I only bought maybe 5 handbooks total, all the course material was print-outs through academic publishers or student circles. So that wasn't all that expensive as well. Of course, in the US distances are much bigger so housing is needed and I can imagine that's THE biggest cost of course, the cost of living...
      On another note: it's great to see Maria share these options with you guys. That's something noble and very needed for anyone starting a study on anything. Often some people follow their passion, but job options aren't that great. However, perhaps with a small twist, like let's say an extra Master' in economics you can make any science profile perhaps more interesting for industry/business. I'm also sharing study and career advice for Biomeds, so I can greatly relate to Maria for doing this and I admire her for that as well! Keep it up with showing us what it's like to be a marine biologist!

If that is something you are interested in, then ask your professors or supervisors if they have any idea of labs or research groups where you could work. Also, i am sure that with a quick google search you will find many universities doing research on plastic.

    • @marinessciencecafe5098
      @marinessciencecafe5098 6 років тому +1

      Jurassic Blaster - I actually worked in a paleontology lab during my undergrad! It's a very different kind of work. What I recommend is that you try a bit of both as an undergraduate student by volunteering in different labs. Marine biology is a lot more applied to the real world, whereas paleontology is a bit like history, you dig into the past. Also, even though Marine biology is a hard field to pierce through (few jobs), paleontology is a lot harder to pierce through (practically no jobs). So that may be something to consider...

    • @Seamemaria
      @Seamemaria  6 років тому

      Marine has already given the perfect answer. Even though I find it very interesting, I have never really worked in paleontology, so I think as Marine said, the best would be to try a bit of both and see what you prefer. Good luck!

    I graduated in marine biology, I have experience from working in marine parks to resorts, but I see job prospects are slim to none, even worse now in the pandemic. Btw, My dream job was to work in an mpa or marine park... what a utopia. There is only one job and thousands of applicants. This sector needs to change or tje only people "working" vokunteering in this field will be wealthy ones.. And no I would not waste time and money to do a phd, reach mid 30's and still no decent job that would allow me to financially sustain myself. I feel sorry to say this.. but it was a big mistake stufying tjis at uni. Is spending time and money at university supposed to give you a job and not just volunteer works or iobs that only last a season for little to none money? What do u think? Btw, I speak from personal experience.

      Ethan Smith Try to attend a college/university close to the coast. They will have more in marine biology than others.
      As for what classes to take, you should decide on what branch of marine biology to get into before deciding on classes, or at least have a good idea as to what branch you want to get into. In my college, I can take classes for generic biology, macro/micro biology, oceanography, ecology, environmental science/biology, and much more. You should definitely take advanced math, chemistry and physics and get really good at it. A bit of programming and statistics will be good. And take courses to teach you how to use a computer really well - PC, Mac and Linux.

      Talk to your school councilors. Let them know what you want to do. Talk to professionals in you desired field. And visit colleges/universities to get info on your desired degree.

      It is definitely possible. Diving might not be recommended, however there are a lot of jobs in marine biology where diving is not necessary ;)

    Is Marine Biotechnology same as marine biology?

      @Seamemaria  6 років тому

      HI Winnie. Not really. Biotechnology means usually relates to using marine resources to develop new technologies and products, while marine biology does not necessarily have to be applied.
