Have you ever watched SpongeBob? What do you think about it?
SpongeBob is a timeless classic. ❤
Bikini bottom vlog when?❤
@@ehlowgovna Do you think they will invite me there to vlog? I'd be down XD
You never watched Spongebob? H0w did you do that?
Sponge Bob was one of my favourites to watch when I was small.
Thank you very much for the making video about it loved it.
I am just trying to wrap my head around how a marine scientist has never seen SpongeBob
🤷🏽♀️ It didn't play on Portuguese TV when I was a kid
Because she has lots of study and research and work that's why !
It's kind of ironic because Stephen Hillenburg studied marine biology. It's what inspired him to make it.
@@Seamemaria great reaction. I hope you'll react to more
Same
In a later episode Spongebob's parents and other older relatives show up, and they DO look like the old natural sponges, both in shape and color.
You really should look at more, theres a surprising number of good references to real marine life.
That makes me want to watch more. Episode recommendations are very welcome! :)
@Seamemaria I would suggest the segment "Ripped Pants". Not for anything in the plot, but the setting. The episode establishes that the underwater world uses a deep sea brine pool as a stand-in for a beach.
@@darklordofswordIn the games and other episodes, they say the goo of Goo Lagoon is like mud or actual goo, not actual water.
@@darklordofswordas a kid i always thought spingebobs parents was cookies
@@jeremybottoms7619 makes sense, if spongebob is a cheese lol
Interesting to note: despite his name, the creators said Squidward is an octopus.
The six tentacles instead of eight is probably just to be easier on animators, like all those cartoon humans with only eight fingers
The really weird thing is that they're all tentacles, not octopus arms. All 6 limbs have suckers only on the clubbed end.
Spongebob used to be an actual sponge but they changed his design to an artificial one. His parents however look like real sponges, altho as a kid I thought they were cookies... so yeah, good thinking on their part into making spongebob into an artificial sponge
ooohh is he? Ok, then his squareness makes more sense.
In one episode Spongebob could not understand why someone getting their hand cut off is scary, until Squiward explained to him that the injured person wasn't a sponge, which means the hand didn't grow back. Some sponge species are of course known for their extreme regenerative ability.
What episode is that? I dont think it exists
The Hash Slinging Slasher, my guy 🤦🏾♀️
@@MarvinMakesArt Graveyard Shift
The Hash-Slinging Slasher!!
Squidward is ironically an octopus. It just easier to animate 6.
Some of people don't know that because Squidward as Squidward in his name. And if his name was Octoward most people would believe he's an Octopus with 6 tentacles.
Spongebob was THE childhood cartoon for me^^ watched it for almost 10 years on a daily basis as a child. First couple of seasons are legendary
I don't know why I didn't watch it! I don't think it played on TV here in Portugal when I was at the proper age to watch it.
@@Seamemariai ran here in germany from late 90s to now, i Think. I watched it during the 2000s with german dub
SpongeBob is fantastic. Would not be opposed to more SpongeBob on this channel lol
Haha maybe I'll watch some more episodes. Any episode suggestions?
@Seamemaria it's kinda hard to choose one since there all pretty good
@@Seamemaria Pizza Delivery and Rock Bottom are great choices! But there are so many. Squeaky Boots is another one that pays tribute to Edgar Allen Poe. But honestly you can’t go wrong with any episode from the first couple seasons.
@@DannyBuenaflowwait really? I didn’t know squeaky boots was a reference to the tale tell heart by Edgar Allan Poe. The more you know
@@Seamemariaripped pants and one krabs trash!
Squidward is an octopus. It's just easier to animate without that many legs.
I'm a crazy SpongeBob fan, I watch since I was a kid, and I still love him.
You gotta know SpongeBob references in the marine science community. 😂
Yeah, I think if someone ever referenced SpongeBob, or made jokes related to him, it probably went over my head xD
Look at our little marine biologist, she has grown so much, I still remember the days when she struggled just to put out the fire in her life pod in subnautica, I’m so proud
ikr! She's grown so much when it comes to pop culture!
yeah, those were good times
And then she beat the game…
Squidward is in fact an Octopus the reason he doesn't have 8 tentacles was because the animators had a hard time animating his extra two tentacles for his arms and they also hated the way they looked on him so they just decided to only give him 6.
Ironically, there’s actually a species of octopus called the Seven-armed octopus, which of course has seven arms. So in a way, there might be an octopus who has six arms.
Fun fact:the creator of the spongebob stephen hillenburg was an american marine biologist
2 children 10 years apart and one of the few things they sat and watched together when my daughter was little…. SpongeBob! I am also a fan 😊
It's bittersweet in some way: you as a child would love this show so much, I'm sure. SpongeBob reminds me of you a bit, as you both seem to be kind, friendly enthusiasts who love their job :D I am glad you get to do so much for all the real SpongeBobs and other sea creatures out there.
Aplysina aerophoba!! Yes, I believe we even used a Spongebob image back then for our presentation. And did the antagonist Plankton show up in any of the episodes you watched? He's a copepod! So they were perfect characters to use for the presentation in Rovinj hahaha :D Anyways yes I always loved to watch Spongebob!!
haha yes! I think that photo was even from your course xD So cool you remember it. I haven't seen any plankton yet... I think I need to continue watching
Hewwo acetyleni
Spongebobs parents are real sea sponges and they gave birth to an artificial dish washing sponge. True story.
Your reaction is very interesting and funny, as a child I saw SpongeBob more as a kitchen sponge 😂, since they are usually yellow, square and have those holes everywhere.
He is technically. He's a sea sponge shaped and used like a kitchen sponge. It's the humor of his character
SpongeBob Squarepants the best marine film ever!!!!!!!!!!
haha based on true facts xD
1:31 as soon as she said sponge eat plankton I laughed 😂(you know what I mean 😉)
I never knew old sponges were ACTUAL seasponges
The idea of an animal being used as a cleaning product is wild to me😂
Funny how you mention thinking he was a piece of cheese... Stephen Hillenburg literally put "sponge" in his name because he suspected that otherwise people would make that misconception!
I never thought I'd see the day when I'd come across a soul on this Earth who has not yet seen SpongeBob, as infectious as he's become in our society, but your first-time reaction was very much not unlike that of the rest of us. I do believe you'll enjoy the rest of the stories this sponge has to tell. :)
Guess your Marine Biologist, and of course Stephen Hillenburg is both the creator of SpongeBob and Marine Biologist too, even he knows that Krabby Patties are vegan.
LOL. I was the same way, originally thinking Spongebob was a cheese despite his name until I saw the show.
I've watched tens of thousands of episodes of Spongebob throughout my lifetime and I've never noticed the buses were made to look like Shrimps.
Just so you know, the creators put "sponge" in his name so people wouldn't think he was a cheese man. You've already admitted to confusing that, and I no longer believe in foolproof systems.
SpongeBob was my all time favorite show as a kid (as well as Avatar The Last Airbender) and my girlfriend and I still watch it pretty often to this very day. It's like a comfort show we watch together sometimes
Fun fact: Reef Blower is a completely silent episode mainly because it was produced without a sister episode. Many animated shows pair episodes under 15 minutes into 30 minute duos, and during production they try to finish the episodes two at a time so that they have an even amount of episodes for airing.
But the first episode, Help Wanted, was a pilot, and therefore originally had no sister episode. So once the show was approved for a full run they needed to make an extra episode to get that even number.
Due to legal issues requiring them to pay the voice actors twice in the case of two episodes produced separately, they decided that for just this one episode they would skip out on VAs entirely because of cost concerns. Reef Blower was made incredibly early on, before the show became super popular, so budget concerns were far more important back then!
(Sidenote: there was a persistent rumor that the episode is silent due to broken audio equipment that inspired them to improvise. Cool story but confirmed to be a myth.)
I also have never watched SpongeBob but it’s so fun watching one with you today!
There's an episode ("I Had An Accident") where Spongebob is afraid of getting hurt again so he becomes a recluse hiding in his house. When his friends try to talk him out of it, Spongebob says things like, "I'm a sponge! My people are sedentary!" and "I don't need to buy food. I can just filter feed." I like those little nods to real life.
When I saw Spongebob I thought he was the sponge used to clean dishes, but only came second thinking he looks like Cheese. Also at 4:37 those anchovies look like they're giving a thumbs up. Also, a little baffling you haven't seen the show before given its ocean and sea setting. Snippets of marine facts you give your take is always good
It's a good day when Maria uploads. Great video!
The joke was that Spongebob has the shape of a sink or tub sponge. There's a scene were Spongebob get dehydrated and they just filmed an old dry yellow tub sponge. Many of the innacuracies of sea life are meant as a comic relief. Aside that, it's very accurate. Try the episode when Spongebob takes the bus to the abyssal zone, it's hilarious 😸😹 subscribed!
I really enjoy your videos. Great how you drop knowledge in an articulate yet easy to digest way and correlate it to Spongebob lol. Thanks.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it :D
Cheesebob. Hahaha! Your understandable naivete toward this show is so cute; I love it.
Fun Fact: Krabby Patties are vegan. This has been confirmed by multiple creators of the show.
Maria sounds such a good name for a female Marine. :D Love that name.
I suggest looking at more episodes with different unique characters! Plankton is such a fun one. A crab and a zooplankton having a rivalry just makes sense
looks like my pink/blue ramshorn snail to me...
but they are freshwater
Squidward is just designed to be a foil to Spongebobs cheery personality, so he's not feeling him at all.
I’m glad you enjoyed it, it’s definitely my favorite Nickelodeon show.
SpongeBob is my hero! I used to watch this cartoon all the time with my niece
You reviewing this brings me joy for some unknown reason.
I’m not sure if it’s been told to you already a million times but the creator of the show Stephen Hillenburg was also a Marine Biologist! He was such a creative man, may he rest in peace
Love you inputting marine knowledge/visuals while watching SpongeBob..please keep reacting to more SpongeBob 😃🙏🏻
I remember reading somewhere that originally spongebob was more round but the creator changed it to fit his more "square"/innocent personality :)
Hope you watch more episodes, this is fun
Season 1-3 and first 2 movies are a must watch. Season 10 onward makes a good effort to revitalize the series but the pre first movie is defenitely it's golden era
This show was created by a marine biologist. I think he did a a great job.
used to watch the show when i was a kid. just getting all the facts as an adult is very much interesting lol
You so need to see the first movie. It's honestly a masterpiece.
Spongbob traumatised me as a kid
Oh yeah, in later episodes where they show spongebob's parents, they are alot more rounded
PLEASE react to more episodes! I would love to hear what you have to say about the other fish species.
I e heard the I thought sponge bob was a cheese thing before which I never understood he literally looks like the common house sponge you use to wash your dishes 😭😂
Your not alone about the “cheeseBob” 😂
You should watch the Spongebob episode Feral Friends since they turn into real life versions of the sea creatures they’re based on
Well that fits perfectly in this then, sponges are simplest of the creatures.
In the best of ways! =D
Sponges love Plankton? KrabbyPatty secret ingredient confirmed. Krabbs wasn't lyingg
I feel haunted and disturbed that I once washed myself w the body of a dead animal....totally thought they were of the plant persuasion
Let's be honest. Only a marine biologist would think to make a TV show about a sea spongebob.
first 3 seasons and the original movie are all very high quality cartoons
Not sure who the Frank is but Mr Krabs is voiced by Clancy Brown, who played the Kurgan in Highlander.
Had the same situation with the cheese, never properly watched it to this day really.
I was barely a minute in and I learnt something I never knew. I never knew a there was a sea creature called a sponge.
Hi Maria, will you be playing Under the Waves? It's definitely a title for you. Greetings from Italy :)
Hi! Yes I will :D Over on my second channel =)
Do more reactions about sponge bob pls
4:00 The sea sponges!
Hewwo there gotta say loved your reaction to spongebob fwiendo
My father traveled a lot, but for a good amount of time when I was a child, I was traveling from island to island with my father. We were on one island - I don’t remember the name, but I remember my encounter. I got out of the hut in the morning and walked towards the beach. On the island, there was a fence-like bush, the spiky kind, that surrounded the island, and I needed to go between them to get to the beach. When I entered through them, I saw a big glowing worm emerging from the sand. It was glowing in multiple colors like a rainbow. It was smooth and looked like an earthworm, but it was glowing with rainbow colors all across its body. Then it just dug under the sand. To this day, I have no clue what it was.
Have you tried the game "Dave the diver" already? Would love to see it through your eyes. There are so many different kind of fish and sea creatures in that game! ❤
You should watch the SpongeBob movies next
Just a question if u see a starfish and u think like u wanna help it get into a water, is it safe to pick it up and get it back in. I know Sun starfishes can be toxic and idk if they can bite if they got beaks like squids does.
There another nickelodeon cartoon name Rocket Power its like based in Florida or Angeles were a wise guy who work in a resturant talk to a kid giving him advise, and while the kid is talking the guy see a starfish wash up to a rock and in to the air. The guy then pick the starfish up and throw it back to the ocean. Is that wise or did he do the right thing. Google say you shall never touch a starfish as it can lead to poisoning and u can end up killing it. So how do u save a starfish from suffocating?
Things the creator of Spongebob got right:
- Sea-stars have mouths
- Anchovies form large groups
- Even though Squidward was meant to be an octopus, his full name is "Squidward Tentacles", and tentacles have suckers at the tip, just like Squidward's limbs!
- Squidward doesn't seem to be bothered by the lack of water (5:45), while Spongebob is figthing for his life in Sandy's dome - cephalopods can survive without being submerged, and sponges are much more vulnerable to drying out.
Maria would you consider review the documentary movie BLACKFISH about Sea World Orcas? Would really like to see your reaction.
I didn't think he was a cheese, but the fact that he looks like a household cleaning sponge and not like a sea sponge is pretty obvious
Hi Mariaaa! Can we get a reaction to the live action of the little mermaid from disney? It would be interesting to see how realistic they went with the flora and fauna chosen for the cgi 😂
LOVE YOUR CONTENT! hugs!
Hi! I might. But I've already watched it, so it wouldn't be much of a new reaction. But it's definitely in consideration.
@@SeamemariaIt wouldn't have to be a reaction, though - you could also do something like a short video easy or presentation about how certain species or environments are depicted in the film and then just show select parts; it would be of high educational value!
I remember that the first time I saw it I thought it was a cheese, but I didn't even know the name. 🧀
After a while I found the idea of a bath sponge making friends with a starfish very funny.
I don't know if throughout the series there is an origin story that clarifies which of the two sponges really is... 😂
As always, a pleasure to watch your videos and if you are looking for a new game to play, I recommend it is beyond blue, I think you will love it. ♥♥♥
More people for the cheese-team! I already played Beyond Blue :) I played it live and will upload it soon to my second channel. Thank you!
That game took away the fear that Subnautica generated in me!! @@Seamemaria 😅
I love how you're looking for logic in a cartoon where they lit a campfire underwater and have a beach where they can actually drown- also underwater.
there are undersea seas and beaches, I think the salt content is greater, fact is stranger than fiction
@@iaindcosta Can fish drown in them?
@kateb1127 I believe so, because it is so salne their gills don't or can't absorb oxygen
@@iaindcosta Huh. Interesting. The more you know. 🤔
Still doesn't explain the fire though🙃
@kateb1127 The more you know the more you realise the less you know!
There are lakes of liquid methane and other phenomena on distant moons in the solar system so I have heard, that sounds even wilder!
I learn a lot
Don't worry, i thought he was a cheese too😂
YEESS!!!!!!!!! I'm not alone!!!!!!
Squidward is an octopus.
I just want to know two things. First is when does pearl breathe? And two how the fudge do they drown?
This lady has soothing eyes. ☺
Squidward dislikes everyone. SpongeBob, and oftentimes Patrick, just happen to be the most annoying with their antics. Since Squidward lives between the two, it drives him nuts.
I see you from Uruguay SouthAmerica , very clearly when you explain , thanks . The Marine Biology is nice .
What is your opinion about Jack Costeau ? Would you react to Jack Costeau ?
I watched on TV when I was child . Greetengs From Uruguay , South America , You know Uruguay? the specimens from Uruguay?
Id liked to recommend the spongebob movie (the 2004 movie) its really good
Oh dear, sponges killed during Maria's research. 😢
I've never watched Spongebob, it came around after I was done with cartoons, but I enjoyed the education in this video.
I got a question, which marine life creature acts like a wingman just like Patrick? Also there is actual SpongeBob Conspiracy theories made by a youtuber named Alex Bale which are both very good and makes sense.
The Spongebob stuff is just a front for a horror series. They aren't genuine theories about the show.
You don't have to be a child to watch cartoons. Most good cartoons have an underlying adult theme. They are written by adults!
You need to see the episodes feral freinds
watch an episode Rock bottom, as marine biologist you would find something interesting to comment
Hey, you need to play SOMA. It's an underwater PC game and you will love it. It is an incredible game!
I'm not European, but I'm going to say that zero people thought he was a cheese😂
Me as a kid never see SpongeBob look like a Cheese and SpongeBob's Parents look like cookies!
I can't stop watching your beautiful eyes 💙
Hey, I have a question about orcas. Many people say they don't attack humans because we're not nutritionally rich enough for them. But would they attack a really big guy?
