I don't personally see how Luigi is considered a mid tier when he has consistently had players take him into top 8s throughout basically all of Ultimate's lifespan. People talk highly about characters like Pacman, ROB, Snake, Pikachu, Aegis, Fox, etc. with the same or fewer actual players solo maining them to the same consistent level as the Luigis. The only real problem Luigi faces is unwanted misfires, but this also gets evened out by surprisingly great misfires in certain situations.
I haven't played Smash in a while, and part of why is because I would constantly play low tiers like Zelda and Ganon. Characters higher on the tierlists just have a range of options to just outclass everything I have, and I only ever get to control the pace of a match when they "let me" either through risky play or sheer ignorance. What I'm understanding here sounds like what a character should be: able to compete in any situation, and die in any situation, they should always have options and keep your opponent thinking. I feel like this falls back on the disconnect in competitive games between doing whats fun, and doing whats optimal. The best players want to win more, and focus on minimizing variation so their skills are best used, yet that variety is often what makes these games interesting for the rest of us. In my opinion its even more impressive to see a skilled player be creative with their technical ability, than see a master execute the same routine. Ganon is probably the most explosive ironically, his problem is that it goes both ways regardless of opponent. A good five hits can take a stock, but he can be killed just as quickly because he's slow and can't do too much about it depending on the opponent. Again though, I only play against CPUs, so I assume your experience is much more informed and common. It's certainly annoying knowing that the character you love most isn't high-tier (even more frustrating to know it WAS high-tier, just in a previous entry), and it's sometimes upsetting when I switch characters for just a match or two only to have an easier time entirely because they're just better and higher up on the tier-list. I myself don't really watch competitive play of anything, so I guess I can't really comment on that beyond the vague "it should be interesting enough to watch".
its because 1 mistake will get you killed so the only way to beat him is to camp for the entire game. heavies are fun version of this because they are explosive while you can still actually fight them
It is true that a character should have the options to win or lose in every situation. The problem with Luigi is how polarizing he is to fight, as soon as Luigi gets you into one of his setups you're taking 90% or dying. And its just not that fun to be in a guaranteed combo off of one mistake. It is fine for a character to be able to suddenly pull off an explosive combo, but it should get harder and harder to extend the combo with more and more opportunities for the opponent to escape as it goes on. With Luigi, it doesn't usually work out like that. He either combos your to death or doesn't. Another thing that is important to Smash is the mental game behind it. I play competitive at a low-mid level, and from my experience tier list placement is not very important (case in point: a Mii Swordfighter consistently places top 3 in my region). The thing that IS important is how good you are at conditioning, punishing habits, and just getting into your opponent's head. And I think that is where Smash gets the most fun. With Luigi, there just isn't as much of that. Or I guess, the stakes become a lot higher to the point where he only needs to outplay you 3 times to win a game.
The problem with Luigi is that stray hits matter less, as he can kill and be killed super early, and so he just kinda makes neutral a whole lotta nothing until 1 single interaction where 1 player just loses a stock
Luigi as controversial as he is in Smash Ultimate, is actually overall more versatile than his own Big Brother. I say this is hilarious after all the times Luigi was made fun of.

Misfire is absolutely insane. And what if you're edgeguarding vertically? You can lose your jump to that up b and before you can react you're in the bottom blast zone
@@bedstevesuper1936ptooie covers diagonal recovery options. Thats the only recovery option Luigi won't opt for. I don't think plant does much against Luigi
In Luigi’s defense, his brother Mario is not exactly an honest character either. Still though it’s insane how Luigi is in Ultimate, in Smash 4 he was particularly cheesy but mainly just with his tornado gimping you and not much else.
I remember fighting a friend who was playing Luigi as Olimar. I latched a red pikmin to him and threw him offstage. He was then incredibly confused when his green missile didn’t go anywhere because it would immediately hit the red Pikmin but do no damage to it.
Very good points here! I think you ought to emphasize a point on Luigi and other "Why Everyone HATES" characters that everyone knows but which bears repeating: Having to respect Luigi's options so much that you constantly avoid him means you must make an effort to avoid interacting, which is the fun part of the game. If you're caught in a Luigi combo and the Luigi player knows what they're doing, most attempts to get out of the combo fail, and your experience becomes non-interactive, which isn't fun! Fighting Luigi requires being non-interactive, and getting combo'd by Luigi is also non-interactive; thus, people hate Luigi because fighting him just isn't interactive and so isn't fun, either on offense or on defense.
Welp, as once said in a meme about Luigi in Smash “AHOY SPONGEBOY ME BOB. I’VE BEEN GRABBED BY LUIGI AT 6% BECAUSE I GOT GREEDY AND WHIFFED A NAIR. I AM NOW GOING TO TAKE 93.5% FOR MAKING A SINGLE MISTAKE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME AND I WILL SOON NEED LIFE SUPPORT. ARGAGAGAGAGAH.”
I wish he still had that weird recovery he could do in Smash 4 with his down special after jumping. I'd gladly trade his touch of deaths (of which I never do or learn) for that back.
I played a Luigi in my Smash invitational, and I can definitely say that his tether grab is broken. I was surprised how he could quickly use another one even if the first grab clanks, and after watching this I didn’t know that down throw has more hitstun than other grabs. That’s crazy!

Luigi needs an overhaul seriously. In Smash 4 he had the issue of Luigi cyclone being used as a ridiculous gimping/semi spike tool and still had a great combo game. In this game his cyclone has I frames which allow him to break out of strings, still has a lot of power and his grab is legitimately broken. I'm fine with Smash leaning into Luigi being unconventional and weird, makes him fun. It's just that I hope Luigi is very different in the next game because good lord he's demoralizing to fight in Ultimate
The problem with Luigi's broken combos is down throw and nair's launch angles. If down throw was maybe a tech chase instead like the Melee spacies and nair had a 40° angle on the clean hit and a 70° angle on the late hit like Wario's nair, everything would be fine. I used to complain about late hit up air and how fast down tilt is, but, he'd kinda need that if my nerfs to down throw and nair's angles happened. After Bayo's DAB kick was made absolutely horrible in Sm4sh patch 1.1.6 just by a simple 20° angle change, I realized that alot of moves would be easily buffed or nerfed correctly with just one simple change to their launch angle.
Even Kazuya fears The Weej! I do kind of hope the next Smash Bros reworks Luigi a bit. I realize many characters have generally kept the same movesets between each Smash game, but that doesn't mean they can't be reworked and rebalanced again for the next game. Luigi definitely has some really questionable design.
I think the main reason why I’ve always hated Luigi (and the other “Luigi” archetype characters), is how the only way to play around them is to not play the game. The best form of interaction is not interacting, and that makes games against these Luigi-esque TOD characters so boring. If I’m playing Smash (or any fighting game) I want to PLAY Smash, not run around like I’m playing Sonic or Min Min all game, despite the fact that I play some of the more neutral oriented characters like Cloud and Joker
Every time I see a Luigi in bracket. I just bring out my Icies secondary and watch them struggle. But Luigi is still my boi, but Smash is really doing a good job making other people loathe Luigi as a character.
I haven't watched this entire video, but so far it's really spot on. For the next Smash game they should just completely work Luigi. I think this is one of the worst designed characters in the game. I don't think that characters designed like this should exist, because it just isn't fun.
Bowser minions, Bowser, Koopalings and King boo: (African man laughs meme) X) Mario the mushroom hero along rumored fighters in Smash bros: (Angry Mario sound). >8(
i think dr mario is a better executed variant of "slower but stronger mario", even if he's like low or low-mid tier. dr mario can demolish but he doesn't just do the same combo every time and, while you may want to camp him out, he doesn't turn this into a different game like luigi or little mac

Now i know why somone on a livestram almost hit a 100 game win streak with Luigi.
would it be fair to say that luigi is the volcarona of smashbros
Kinda? Maybe a bit closer to hoopa unbound or any major nuke below 100 base speed, as it’s about finding that kill from full
He is just goated why hate him 😢
Luigi is my favorite mario bro., but smash ultimate is the only game that actively makes me hate him...
Every time I see a Luigi in bracket. I just bring out my Icies secondary and watch them struggle.
But Luigi is still my boi, but Smash is really doing a good job making other people loathe Luigi as a character.
I was already rolling my eyes before I looked at the comments section because I knew what kind of things people would be writing... I was right lol
Ain’t no reason for any archetype to have s except for heavies
I haven't watched this entire video, but so far it's really spot on. For the next Smash game they should just completely work Luigi. I think this is one of the worst designed characters in the game. I don't think that characters designed like this should exist, because it just isn't fun.
Did you made this video because of how Luigi is trending (and who I heard is said to possibly be with Diddy)?
I rather fight Luigi than the dlc characters. Man is straightforward on what he wants.
Bowser minions, Bowser, Koopalings and King boo: (African man laughs meme) X)
Mario the mushroom hero along rumored fighters in Smash bros: (Angry Mario sound). >8(
i think dr mario is a better executed variant of "slower but stronger mario", even if he's like low or low-mid tier. dr mario can demolish but he doesn't just do the same combo every time and, while you may want to camp him out, he doesn't turn this into a different game like luigi or little mac
Sounds like he’s good. Time to main him
I get that CEO is the highest tier fighting game tournament that still has Smash but why is everyone in the comments saying he’s the strongest at that tournament?
