In this weeks video I use Zebrawood veneer to turn this old used piece of furniture into the new focal piece in our home.
Nice job Jon, I am working on a mid-century (date stamped on the bottom 1954) coffee table; I was finishing up on my part of the job this morning; I turn the piece over to my wife and her friend ( my middle son's girlfriend) this afternoon. After I finish the coffee table I have two end tables to do, not sure when I'll start.
A quick question: Why did you not match the drawer front wood grain?Beautiful piece either way.
I love how you finish your projects by using simple tools. Simple, easy, and modern finish. All the best from CA.
I'm re-doing my cardeza now in zebra wood veneer after watching this video, dark legs.. and a white rug..
Such a good look..
My God you do beautiful work--I couldn't make something look that good in 5 years--nice job Jon
Beautiful work as always Jon! I agree - It's always satisfying to bring an old piece back to life. I personally get more satisfaction out of refinishing than anything else. Thanks for sharing this project with us!
Wow looks like something that just came out of an expensive furniture store. You are a true master at your craft
This revival was just stunning.
Wow, you really gave that old piece a new life with pizazz! Dark legs really grounded it too. Nice work n thanks for sharing your talents with us.
Man, your work is so clean. Beautiful house too! Hard work pays off.
Jon, this turned out really great. Now I gotta hit up some consignment stores and look for a project. Thanks!
What a beautiful, stylish piece of furniture - a great make over Jon.
Zebrawood veneer is a great product. Made kitchen doors with Walnut hardwood and zevrawood veneer as the panels, finished with gloss poly, 10 coats. Got a little carried away. Enjoy your videos.
Nice! Love the bronze handle choice. We did bamboo veneer on all our kitchen cabinets and added bronze handles, bronze appliances, and did the pantry doors with cane webbing stained to a chocolate brown. Gives it a nice retro style.
Alright, fine.... I'll start doing veneers. Really great work, John.
The piece came out great Jon. You really did a really nice job re-finishing it. Looks beautiful in your house too, nice setting for it.
That is absolutely gorgeous.
Love it! I really like the dark legs and pulls against the zebra wood.
Very nice. Mid century modern is my favorite period for furniture.
Love it, you could have kept grain continuity on both drawers.
Fantastic piece of work Mr.... I need the equivalent of you here in the UK....
Very educative and a stunning result. I will, however, agree with a lot of people in the comments. Keeping the Veneer pattern on both drawers would've been an extra nice touch.
Looks absolutely fantastic! Love the way the drawer fronts look compared with the carcass
My kind of furniture. Very nice
That looks great! Do you do anything special at the corners when veneering? Can you see the edge of the veneer? Also, it would be great if you would post a video about your spray finishing. Cheers! Steve
Very good choice on the zebra wood. Restoring the piece alone as it was would of had made it good, but the veneer is what gives it a second pass. Excellent piece.
Wow... Just wow... Cool music too.
Very nice........I also really like the "coffee table" in front of the couch!
I like the way you are working with and the project is looking great
You are a great artist Jon
A new family heirloom as you say! I love the zebrawood veneer, we don't see alot of it in the UK. N.
That's beautiful Jon. I've always shied away from veneer work but I think I'll give it a go having seen yours. Doubt we can ever get zebra wood here in the UK but you've encouraged me to see what's available.
Thanks again. Top video

Was a makeover was the right choice for that piece? The side table is Foster McDavid (not sure if the label was still in the drawer), which happens to be one of the most important manufacturers of walnut Danish modern style furniture in the 50's and 60's. They are actually quite rare, and very collectable. The finished project looks good, although it would have been nice to line up the veneer on the drawers given the distinctive grain.
I lucked into a full bedroom set with similar construction. I cleaned them up and reoiled. They look amazing.
that finish looks fabulous, great job, Jon 👏🏼👏🏼
This looks great. Did you also veneer the front edges of the carcass (around the drawers)?
It looks beautiful John! Great job!
Wow, Jon - this is stunning! Great work!
turned out great.
personally, ive always felt that hardwood with a nice grain looks the best though.
Wow. Looks fabulous. Gives me a lot of ideas. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful work, Jon.
I especially like that the sander was in the right key for the song....
Mr. Peters, great video! It looks really good. I feel like looking for some old furniture and do the same. Inspirational!!!
Great work sir. Very inspirational
wow man, that has a new life, great job
I would have cut the drawer veneer fronts so the wood grain patterns were continuous from one drawer to the other. That's just my preference. Beautiful work!
That came out beautifully, great job.
Jon like I always say remarkable work you are awesome.
That came out great!
Turned out great Jon, love the look of the zebra wood!
Very well done, John. I see you decided to go with a piece of plywood for the tool to press the veneer down.
Looks great, Jon!
Wow that came out beautiful!
great channel. You might know this but rubbing wax onto the track wood and into the trench will make it slide much smoother.
Looks incredible, Jon!
My goodness Jon awesome piece.
It was new again, nice!
Really beautiful job!
Superb, one of those great vids that has you thinking "what will he do next"? The end result is useful
Precisely what I looked for, thanks. Heard bout the“Woodworking Bible”? Hyezmar’s book continues to be in draft status and readily available for all to download.
Great job as always, can you talk about your sprayer how you apply your finish and what you use thanks
Top finish. love it
Wow Jon, that turned out great!
gorgeous piece
High quality as always
Nice work as always Jon!
Looks amazing Jon! !
Hey Jon, I think I noticed in the last video the table looked to sit a little un-level. One of the legs didn't look to sit flat with the other three. I was anxious to see how you fixed that. Was there an issue with the levelnes? If not, any suggestions as to how to make the repair with the same structure as this one? Great job. It looks great.
Really nice
good looking piece
Awesome! Great job man! I enjoy watching these videos. I have not heard on an update on that barn addition with the dream workshop yet. What's going on with that? Thanks for posting the video
Jon, with respect to the wooden block, did you ease its edges before applying pressure with it to the veneer?
Beautiful!
Looks great!
Nice piece!

How did your experience with Bondo go? Didn't seem like you used it excessively but Ive found when using it and wanted to share this tip with you is less hardener is more, as you get more working time with it and in the long run can save you a lot of frustration or sanding time depending on what you are using it for.
Amazing job, I love it!
Very nice piece. Your final shot of you in your living room looks like a different shade or even wood on the drawer face vs. the rest of the cabinet. Is that from the lighting or did you do something else to achieve that?
With your obvious skills and knowledge I am a bit disappointed that you did not "aline" the grain on the drawer fronts otherwise great tutorial. Sorry, I don't like leaving negative comments but just felt that would have finished your project perfectly. Cheers Troy
What finish did you use?
Nice job.
Beautiful transformation Jon! I've always loved zebrawood. Did you put the face frame on the carcass before veneering so the veneer covers the edge of the face frame?
Did you not want the veneer on the top and bottom drawers to look like one piece? Thank you.
looks great.
Gorgeous!
Very nice job. i'll settle it, so your kids don't argue over it, send it to me.. Just a thought. Thanks for your videos
That turned out awesome Jon. Great job. Are you sure you don't want you $20 back? Ha! It looks great with your furniture. Beautiful. Douglas.
Good job, handsome man
Jon, new life to an older piece of furniture. Very nice and like the way you cut and wrapped so the Vanderbilt flowed. My problem with veneers is I can't sand or smoothie the short 3 pout corners. How do you accomplish that? May I ask if the sprayer you are using is LVLP or HVLP?
I was wondering how you were going to orient the Zebra pattern, Longitudinal or Horizontal....I picked Longitudinal because the piece is sort of squat and this orientation gives it some visual "height".
Maybe I ain't so dumb after all.
Thanks for the Vid.
Wowee I love it!
Great result. Just starting to work with veneer, any additional tricks for a topcoat? Did you spray lacquer or poly?
+2969 Workshop Thanks, lacquer
Great looking project Jon! I am surprised that your wife did not have you veneer the bottom too! - Mine would!.
Question: did you consider matching the grain pattern on the drawer fronts?
Your right! We did bamboo veneer on our kitchen cabinets. I had hubby do the underside too.
nice job thank you
Looks great; I love Zebrawood. Any trouble with the contact cement on large areas like this (movement, etc.)? Darryl Keil is against using contact cement / only advocates PVA/yellow or Unibond / resin type glues on wood veneer; I DO love how easy contact cement is to work with, but have hesitated doing my drawer fronts w/ contact cement for fear of problems. You never have any issues w/ it?
nice final result ^^
Stunning piece :)
Hi Jon! Thanks for your videos, really helpful stuff! I have a couple questions that I would really appreciate your expert advice on.
I'm working on a re-veneering a stool for a high end studio so really don't want to mess it up!
1. Will contact cement stick to the original lacquer finish or do I have to scrape and sand it back to the veneer in order for it to adhere. The old veneer is a few years old and has a really good bond, they just want it changed to a burr veneer.
2. When it comes to finishing, will a Morrells clear nitrocellulose lacquer in an aerosol spray can cause problems with a Evo-Stick 528 contact adhesive?
The stool I'm veneering is similar to a round foot pouf, but it is wavy. Convexing and concaving all the way around. Hence my need for a instant bond as it's not easily clamped / vacuum formed. And lacquer is the finish previously specified, just wandering if there's a base coat I should apply to stop the lacquer penetrating through small holes in the oak burr veneer and causing delamination.
Thank you so much for any advice!
Looks amazing!! What color/brand of stain did you use for the feet and handles?
as far as staining a veneer. should i lightly sand the surface 1st?
How do you sand the corners with that random orbital sander? My bosch always round the top of the corners, because of the concave foam in the pad, ripping through the veneer.
Amazing
