Roy is a GREAT person and I believe him 100%
I think this was very very unfair to blame Roy Firestone for what happened in 1994.
The "public" is largely made up of idiots. That's why they damned condemned this reporter. They simplisticly look at things at hindsight and don't consider context.
I could see why Roy Firestone would have been friendly & chummy, and dismissive of any domestic abuse charges OJ had against him. It was 1989 and OJ was still well-liked by people. It was also the first time it became known to the public that he had a problem regarding violence. OJ was a charismatic person who was well-loved and respected by the public prior to the murders. OJ also was very persuasive in getting people to side with him, and he seemed to have convinced the reporter it was all being blown out of proportion by the media, and it was all just a minor argument he had with his wife.

This is very unfair to Roy Firestone . In 1989 the fact that he even asked OJ the question was groundbreaking. There where domestic abusers who where even worse than OJ that where never asked a domestic violence question back then because it was considered a personal and private matter separate from sports at that time.
I must disagree with your take on this. While Mr. Firestone did not really cover up things related to this domestic violence incident, he did not do anything praiseworthy. He did not even-really-ask OJ about it. He offered sympathy for his colleague that some people were viewing him as being violent towards his late wife.
Mr. Firestone bemoans that he had no way to know anything in detail about this event until much later. That lament is not exculpatory; it is damning. If he wishes to be considered a journalist, it is incumbent upon him to find those things out before sitting down with OJ.
His complaint that nobody knew anything then except the one detective who supposedly kept it a secret. Well, clearly it wasn't kept a secret because Mr. Firestone's interaction with OJ during the piece of film in question was built off of the public reaction to the news of the incident on New Year's Eve. Either the matter was public knowledge or it was not. Mr. Firestone appears to assert it was simultaneously both.
Mr. Firestone failed as a reporter and journalist here. He comes across as somebody who was just being in the presence of somebody he wanted to admire-and that is a feeling no responsible journalist can permit himself to have. Once that happens, a professional embarrassment becomes inevitable.
@@bobculwell5375 There were a good number of sports reporters back in the 1970's and 1980's who I would NOT classify as journalists, people did not ask the tough questions of athletes, whether it was something that happened on the field or in their personal lives.
Yes, Mr. Firestone failed as a journalist in the Simpson interview, particularly when a photo was shown (I believe it was the Firestone show) of Nicole with bruises and cuts on her face. I believe Roy did ask Simpson about the photo, but Simpson sloughed it off as an argument or tiff that married couples have from time to time, or something along those lines. Roy, however, did not pursue it further. Simpson was dressed in tennis whites, and I assumed he and Firestone had just participated in a charity event prior to sitting down for their interview. I am recalling the interview from almost 30 years ago.
I don't see how anyone can blame Roy at all. I also bought into the "OJ myth". I had no clue (until the trial) he was capable of something like that. Even some of the people who knew OJ and Nicole didn't know this was going on.
@@bobculwell5375 again , find another interview where OJ or any other famous person was asked about their domestic violence prior to 1994 . The only one who was asked was maybe Jim Brown in this same manor and Mark Gastano who was completely out of control and beating a famous actress. I remember Sean Connery around this same time telling Barbara Walters that he saw no problem slapping women on international television and he received no back lash at all. I think people are forgetting the times we lived in back then and how the OJ trial changed how we view domestic violence. Roy Firestone was not a journalist. He was a interviewer. Back then , even sports reporters where far less likely to report on athletes personal lives other than fluff pieces and hero worship of the all time greats like OJ.
The same people that rip apart Roy for this are probably the same ones that don’t say a word when NFL players beat women now

he roasted him in that interview.. he brought up all his sponsors and asked him if anyone dropped him for the wife beating? why is this guy getting hate, he was actually one of the first to roast OJ publicly for the beating of nicole
I didn’t even know Roy got flack for that. People thought he was being easy? I don’t think so. The first time I saw that clip was in O.J.: Made In America, he seemed pretty serious. Roy asking OJ “you say nothing that bad happened, but the press is saying something different, so what is the truth?” And the fact that he brought up his sponsorships with hertz, honeybaked hams, and all his other business stuff and finished it off by saying “doesn’t this hurt your business career? Doesn’t this make the company look bad?” There’s a chance OJ’s sponsors would’ve dropped him right then and there since Roy suggested it makes the business look bad, because that’s all the businesses care about.
We all thought he had to be innocent... until we heard about his arrests for abusive treatment of his ex-wife... his tendency to anger.... the DNA evidence... etc.
The overwhelming evidence should have convinced you he was guilty.

Firestone said no charges were brought against O.J. as a result of the 1988 New Year's Eve incident with Nicole. Really? Simpson pleaded no contest to spousal battery charges. Simpson received no jail time despite the fact the prosecution requested that he do a month. Was Firestone unaware of this during the interview or has he just forgotten after 27 years? In fairness though to Firestone remember that "the Juice" was a popular public figure at the time and not a murder suspect. Context is important.

Throw in his hilarious malfunctioning hair, screaming for mercy with every cringe-worthy close-up, and you have yourself a parody worthy of a Saturday Night Live blooper reel. Praising his "Oprah-like" interviewing skills is like praising George W Bush for being a great orator.

Sorry, forgiving a journalist for choosing to kiss his subject's ass is silly. It's not something you realise is wrong in hindsight -- it is always wrong! Period. The fact that he approaches most of his faux interviews this way is another reason he doesn't deserve forgiveness. But ESPN deserve greater scorn for serving up this tripe as sports journalism.

Margaret Lowery That doesn't necessarily mean he was actually innocent. There is something known as a miscarriage of justice. The fact that this jury issued a not guilty verdict doesn't mean anything in terms of moral justice.
OJ was also found liable for wrongful death in the civil suit, so that jury saw the case differently.
You mean not as guilty as the LA cops. There was found to be reasonable cause to believe impropriety existed in the investigation. He was found doubtably guilty. There was a juror who said it wasn't just the reputation of the LA cops. They made him try on the gloves. They put Mark Fuhrman on the stand. If they had come correct he would have been found guilty. The jurors could all believe he was guilty and still find him not guilty on the basis of cause for reasonable doubt. It's not a question of a reasonable person could say the evidence points to him.
You know who else was found not guilty? The cops who beat Rodney King on camera. So obviously not all verdicts are just.

A Federal judge today sentenced two police officers to two and a half years in prison for the beating of Rodney G. King. He said he was being lenient because Mr. King had provoked their violence and the officers had already suffered from widespread vilification and from having to face repeated judicial proceedings.
The two men, Sgt. Stacey C. Koon and Officer Laurence M. Powell, who had faced up to 10 years in prison for violating the civil rights of Mr. King, were ordered to begin serving their sentences on Sept. 27. Fines were waived.

you actually believe that? 22 years that murdering reprobate took the lives of two innocent people. Leaving his ex wife the mother of his children nearly decapitated while their kids slept upstairs. It's beyond SICK to think those little kids could have found their mother in such a state.
Margaret Lowery He was found not guilty by jurors who (and I'm being extremely charitable here) didn't believe the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
That doesn't make him innocent. Just because he was acquitted doesn't mean he didn't do it. Another jury said he was liable for wrongful death in these murders, which means they believed he did it.
