Great interview here. Pete speaks about Larry Bird saying he's not the best shooter while also saying he's the best in the game right now. Watching Bird win all those 3 pt contests combined with his ability to score with either hand as well as the way he always put the ball through the hoop at the end of the game for the win after telling whoever was guarding him exactly where he was going to shoot the shot. If he wasn't the best shooter I'd like to know who was. Now that I think about it this interview was most likely done before Larry really came into his own so Pete could be correct here. Also at 9:45 Pete drives to the basket and fakes a behind the back pass while running full on to the basket. Poetry in motion. He makes the shot and guess who I see playing defense against him. None other than Wilt Chamberlain who without a doubt is the greatest basketball player of all time.

This dude was playing jazz, on the basketball court, for the Jazz, in the brand new Superdome. He punctuated the equilibrium of the game more than his father could ever have imagined. The only guy that had better hands than bird
What a nice dude , but a calm killer on the court . i always tried to mimic both . Hard to believe he was only 40 . Pete & Larry . 2 best passers ever . That's right Magic . Basketball will never be like that again , sadly . Hail to the Pistol , " Bang "
Wow , just heard him call one of my shots a pro layup. Always gotta get it 1 inch over the big guys hand . & if you don't get one blocked , now & then , you're not taking enough chances .
Pete is an example of a person who in whatever profession that works to elevate his talents.
God bless you Pete Maravich, I pray you have the peace, meaning and love you searched so hard for - RIP Pete Maravich
He’s so nice jeez sad he had to go
He didn’t play defense? There were 5 guys on the other team who didn’t or couldn’t play defense on him. If LSU weren’t that good and HE was a one man team, then you’re telling me that his opponent held him to 44 points a game?
Amen
He play defense - check the films. Good comments!
Excellent!!! RIP PETE!
Class person, enjoyed the interview!!
I was never interested in basket ball, until I saw Maravich play. Watching him play was mesmerizing…
10:15 what? behind the back, bounce through the legs of defender pass!!?!
The most talented people are often times the most humble.
I just watched the game where Pete scored 68 on the Knicks in 77'. Riley may have observed something , but , on that night in New Orleans the pistol was passing, rebounding and playing excellent defense. Just ask Phil Jackson & Bill Bradley. This dude was playing jazz, on the basketball court, for the Jazz, in the brand new Superdome. He punctuated the equilibrium of the game more than his father could ever have imagined. They wanted to make the game more exciting, they succeeded. Pat Riley benefitted by accepting the new reality that "flow" was inevitable and that trying to stop it with New York style defensive "muggings" was detrimental to the game and part of that "boring" era 10 years earlier that Pete spoke about.
A movie of life.
Pete, Saying Larry Bird as the best over all! Is like A.J. Foyt saying Rick Mears was the best Driver! R.I.P. Pistol Pete. Shawn
@ERIC JAMES Larry Bird! Is The G.O.A.T. of all time! Not Michael, Kobe or James. Larry Bird gave more in The NBA. Than all 3 combined. People don't want to give him the credit he deserves. He holds more records than Jordan. Shawn
@@shawnbeck2303 Jordan has the most trophies. Jordan is the goat
@@AndyC1 No Bill Russell is the greatest ever, 11 titles, I don't care if it was less teams back then, he still did it, in a very competitive era, battling Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, just about every year, for the championship.
@@Mrd9960 It isn't all about titles. Titles is just one part. Titles are more of a team accomplishment anyway when considering the Goat. Jordan has the most scoring titles with 10. Plus the most trophies total with like 22. Jordan GOAT.
@@AndyC1 to each their own man, some would say Lebron, some would say Kobe or Magic, Bird, all a matter of opinion.
What would he be worth today???
What would a 6'5 Steph Curry be worth? That much.
A lot
Hmni Kadoza Steph can’t handle the ball like Pistol, not many can. He’d be worth a lot, probably average 20 /10/5 per game,
@@deboisblanc Why cant Pete handle the ball like Steph? Just as creative. Just as much control. Pete, Irving, Iverson, Steph and Tim have the best handles in NBA history. Isiah, Magic, Lebron, Nash, and Kidd are the next 5 IMO.
@Alex Carushow The most underrated aspect of Lebrons game is his ball handling. Hes ambidextrous, handles the ball like a point guard, has a full complement of counters and doubles. Please put some respect on how SKILLED Lebron is. Dismissing him as simply an athletic marvel is a disservice to the number of techniques hes acquired over 17 years in the league, now averaging his most assists a game.
Peter ‘Pistol’ Maravich died less than three months after this interview
If Maravich had played with the 3-point shot...he would have averaged over 50 a game easily in college.
The clip at 6:15 showing Celtics #44 is erroneously used in this Maravich doc. That clip is from at least 5 years before Maravich donned Celtic green. Nice that ESPN put Paul Westphal #44 (dishing to Steve Kuberski for the lay in) into the Maravich action clips. Somebody stopped paying attention at ESPN?
Firestone was a great interviewer
What an interesting, articulate person.
The Best college basketball player in history. 44 points a game average. Without the 3 point line.
This was back when ESPN was a great network.
The first Serb that played in the NBA😀
Please don’t be racist.
@@monetschannel5773 Since WHEN is it "racist" to accurately acknowledge that someone of a specific race achieved something as a member of that race??
@@charlesjwin when you bring up a certain race other than the human race, that is the definition of racist.
@@monetschannel5773 The actual definition of "racist", is: an act that is prejudiced or antagonistic toward a being based upon race. The original comment didn't qualify as meeting the definition. The statement that Pete was "Serb" was a fact that wasn't suggesting any prejudice or antagonism, anymore than saying Pete was "male" would be "sex-ist". Labeling a statement of undebatable fact, which is not a statement based on emotion or opinion, (such as the one that Pete was Serb as "racist") is quite ignorant.
I apologize I misunderstood, Pistol Pete was a showman he knew basketball he was a great man and I watch him every day.
Greatest ball handler of all time Play before the 3 point shot played on mediocre teams if not he'd be in the top 5 of all time
Pistol was AWESOME!
Yes he was!!!!
Oh man! Watching Pete play was unbelievable
Good interview
i feel robbed i didnt know about this wonderful human being!!may he rest in perfect peace.
This man was so professional.
Edison: Lightbulb
Jobs: iPhone
Maravich: Handles
No doubt
Edison is a fraud, he didn't invent anything... learn about Nkola Tesla kids...
@@JoWasHere79 Yeah kids take it from an internet troll who knows fuck all. don't read books just create memes and then yell lies at people online.
This guy doesn't even look like a baller. Unexpected humble bad ass dude.
dang what a smart deep human being
@Pistol🏀Pete was a first class gentleman on and off the court Rest ✊🏾🏀💯
Hope to meet Pistol in Heaven one day.
Pure class act
I wear my socks down ,and I'm down with Jesus
Rest in peace Pete Maravich. For good or bad, he believed he was performing for the fan and they deserved their money's worth. Not today's prima donna player.
Amen
Pistol and dr J the most dangerous duo in NBA history
I wish I was around long enough to see him in his prime. Its a shame he died when i was five years old because i would have loved to have seen him play.
