Hi Everyone. I've been suffering from a head cold for a couple of weeks so this week's video is less project heavy than normal. I embraced technology years ago with my first Palm Pilot. I continue to find ways to keep my phone useful everyday. I hope you can use some of these tips.
Love your videos Karen. I am having trouble getting my sew jo back after being sick for over 2 weeks. I have a twin size quilt that I am hand quilting for a granddaughter. I really hope I can back on track soon. I do love all your videos....like visiting with an old friend. Thank you, stay well, and keep them coming when you can. You are appreciated very much. Aloha from Hilo.
All I have to do is turn on one of your videos and I find myself smiling! You have such a gift for communicating. I've only just begun watching this one and love that you, too set a timer for tasks we really don't want to do...and the take-away for me is that they always take less time than I thought they would. Now onto the rest of my happiness moment...no timers for me when I watch your videos..they are my interruption free indulgences!
A very useful app... Robert Kaufman Quilt Calc... useful to calculate binding, backing, sashing, etc. A great app!! I also use my phone to take pictures of options. When I'm trying to figure out a layout or binding fabric or border fabric, I'll lay each option out and take a picture. I can then flip back and forth as I decide. A picture is also a great too to see layout mistakes! Not sure why I can't see it with the naked eye sometimes but I take a picture and a layout problem becomes very clear! Thanks for the tips... always helpful!!
I take photos for inspiration but I've been keeping them in separate albums: plants, ironwork/grilled etc. Maybe i should choose the best for an inspiration album!
Great phone use summary. I use the camera to inventory my crafting parts, Recently I was gifted and embroidery machine with all the do-dads. A short video on threading and assembling the beast, with a foot summary has helped a lot. I also have many stamps etc and have reduced duplicates with the visual inventory (how many template do you own) I photograph craft store items to reduce my impulse shopping
Yessss!!!!! I work for Apple as a senior tech advisor, and it is endless the number of ways technology can enhance the quilting journey! My big fat scary goal is to have a channel, class, site etc that teaches just that in minute detail. Gotta get clearance from Apple for no conflict of interest first. You are right on target with this one. Love your teaching style too by the way!
I really like your tip for 30 minutes a day of guilt-free uninterrupted sewing. Also, your tip for doing what you don’t love for 10 minutes, that’s bearable.
I like to use my phone to watch quilting videos, tutorials and blogs. I also borrow audiobooks from the library to listen to while quilting. I purchased a cheap pair $20 of wireless headphones that connect with my phone so I can hear it over the sound of my machine. Being cordless I can move from my machine to the ironing board and cutting mat without tangling in earbud cords. I've recently found out about podcasts and found some free on a pandora app I've downloaded to listen to music.
The Libby app is a newer, improved version of Overdrive for library books. I use Downcast for podcasts and Feedly for blogs. Great video. Thanks. I am trying to get our program committee to have you as a speaker next year!
I use my phone for so much. My screen time report is embarrassing. I have multiple alarms to remind me to do things other than quilting, such as getting my kid off the bus and make dinner! I honestly don’t know how I got by without it. The calculator is a real resource. I use UA-cam and Pinterest as reference tools Craftsy now Bluprint is also a good tool to invest in but I am not a paid subscriber. UA-cam is likely my staple app. I also use the notebook to prioritize my projects. Great topic! Thanks for sharing! Hope you feel better soon.
Hi, greetings from Germany. I made a Photo when I have a block ready to sew together, sometimes it help me to keep away from mistakes. If it all looks good I'm happy.
I am pretty sure one of the photos you showed was from the Canadian Human Rights Museum in Winnipeg. I took a dozen or more photos as I walked from one level to the next. Most powerful museum I have ever visited. I like the suggestions on this video. Funnily I use reminders on my phone for everything but quilting. It is funny how it just never occurred to me.
I use the phone to take pics of items i mend when I have to take something complicated apart it helps me put it back together or helps we recreate something new from something I’ve taken apart.
Thanks so much for the tips! You always say something helpful specifically for me in your videos. When "fabric painting," putting up little squares on a design board, trying to match a design in my imagination, I take a pic every half hour or so. When I look at the photo I see things that weren't obvious when looking with my eyes. And I always, always, always take a pic when I stop and leave the room. I once had the tape let go and the tablecloth I was using as a design board collapse on me, dropping little squares all over the floor! I was able to get back to where I left off quickly by referring to the pic.
I use Quilters Paradise quilt calculator to calculate borders, binding, and backing. I have it as a favorite and it is in the top bar on my iPad for easy access. In the store, it is on my phone. I love your tips and I too love to cross things off of a list. Sometime I add one thing just so I can cross it off. LOL is that OCD???
I love this video, well done!! I never thought about setting a reminder to straighten my back, relaxing our fingers. I will be doing this one. It made me laugh when you said that you set a timer to remember to drink your coffee, I had started putting my drink in my yeti because I would forget I had it until my drink wasn't cold. Thank you for all of the great advice!!
I use my phone as my "design wall" because I do most of my sewing, cutting, ironing in the kitchen. When I am laying out ideas for colour/fabric placement in my designs, I take photos to test layouts. Then when I have the layout I like, I take a photo to keep me organized as I assemble the quilt, just in case I get pieces mixed up or turned the wrong way. Thank you, Karen, for another delightful and useful video of tips and tricks!!
Hope you’re feeling better! I discovered your channel because I binge UA-cam videos while quilting. Love your timer suggestions and because my phone was sitting to my iPad while watching this I now have all your Siri reminders.....my phone takes instructions well! 😉
Great video! Also, I love the idea of sewing for 30 GUILT FREE minutes as soon as I get home from work. There is so much quilting I want to do but if I wait until later in the evening I'm often too beat to haul myself to my sewing room.
I use my timer all the time, but you gave me some excellent ideas how to better use it! I also appreciate your urging to use reminders for all things related to my quilting!
You are my kindred spirit. I do all those things. I have been speaking to quilt guilds about how computers can make you a better quilter. Mine was way too long. Yours is just right.
Just to say hope you are feeling better. I have an android and I use the timer for so many things but had never thought of assigning a specific chunk of time for a task and always felt guilty about not "accomplishing" it completely in one go. This use of the reminder has lifted my spirits so much today. I love your videos Karen they're like a pop in visit that leaves me feeling better and refreshed 😄
@@angiereyes2004 Good for you Angela - it works so well when I want to get an onerous task out of the way instead of procrastinating. Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year!!
Straight forward, to the point, and useful. You get a big A+ for this one. Oh, and well planned. (I hate it when people ramble and forget what they're saying.) Virgina in Ohio
OMG KAREN! Your videos just keep getting better and better!!! Love these tips.... need to use my iphone more efficiently.... i try but forget many times!
Thanks for all the tips. I bought the box timer and use it very often. I also have learned to take pictures of the quilts so I have a picturial diary of my work and gifts that go out the door. It has been really helpful. You are a good teacher so we will keep listening. Thanks again. Patty
Evernote is great for keeping track of patterns, material requirements, fabric choices/swatches. I have it on my chromebook and phone so if I'm shopping, I can check to see if I need more of something or check to see if fabrics will match. I'm a beginner quilter so I don't have much, but I've inventoried my stash (such as it is). I would think Gleeo Time Tracker would be good for someone getting paid so they can keep track of how much time they spend creating a project. I use it for all kinds of tasks.
I use a timer to tell me when I've sat too long and need to get up and walk a bit to help circulation if bathroom trips arent enough. Thanks for the great video. You're right, I can do anything for 10 minutes especially if I put on my salsa or classical music.
OMG. I had no idea that I could set a specific reminder so easy with just speaking! Yup, just tried it out. And I have your ‘stuffed’ brain. It always maKes me smile to see the things you come up with. Hugs
Awesome video...hope you are feeling 100% again soon. I use an app called Awesome Notes. I love the different views offered and the flexibility. I take photos of all my inventory/stash. I also take snaps of my projects and record supplies and notes. It is so easy to create a checklist, a reminder, a due date, folders and more. I especially love that I can make a backup of all my content and easily copy the backup to the i-cloud of my choice. Thank you again for sharing your talents. 🙏🏻👌🏻😊👍🏼💫
Loved this...I’m a Creative at Apple and it was amazing to see how you use your phone to quilt. Quilting is my passion too and your videos are so well done!
Love this video. I use the reminder feature so much on my phone!!! I also use the timer and agree - it helps me do chores I don’t particularly like to do. Thanks for your tips!
I loved this video! I appreciate all the effort and hard work you put into them. I totally forgot about setting reminders on my phone. Duh Thanks for this quick video. I loved it
I don't have a smart phone but I have an IPad. I like to listen to music while sewing. Love the rest of your tips. I need to use the timer and just organize my sewing room once a week. Just did a little without a timer.
I can’t believe I never thought to use the reminder feature for quilting. 🤦♀️ What a great idea. I’d be interested in audiobook suggestions as it’s not my favourite way to read but would be great when cutting out a lot of bits or making several of one block. One audiobook I wholeheartedly recommend is The Soul of the Octopus. Not only is the story interesting but the narration is really good too.
This video deserves 5 thumbs up!!! It was like having a cup of coffee with an organizing friend...and I feel so inspired on a Friday to move forward in organizing my sewing life. Thanks so much. Crystal
I don’t know why it hasn’t dawned on my scattered self to just set reminders withSiri! Thanks, I have already begun. And I did not realize how many things you could do with notes. And, I always find it helpful to allot a limited time for things I don’t like to do just to get me started. Feel better soon.
My fave apps: Robert Kaufman for calculations; Evernote for project management & ideas; Pinterest for inspiration; iBooks for pattern storage & Stash for fabric database. I have Alexa so I use her for all my alerts/timers. Since I can sit for hours at a time, I have a timer set to get up every 30 minutes for 5 minutes. Thanks for this useful video!
Overdrive have always been my go to for audio book listening while sewing! I found my favorite mystery novel while trying to find a new series to listen to for a difficult quilt. And UA-cam is always great, I’ve been using it to catch up on all my videos (including this one) while working on a postage stamp quilt. Thanks for all of the wonderful tips
I've already outsourced my memory to my phone. Thank you for the color theory series tutorials. I refer to them frequently. I made a value quilt and I'll be darned, it actually looks great!!! My quilting went from, uh, ok to wow.
Even though we had them ten years I don’t think I’ve ever used mine that way I’m not that computer savvy . Thanks for the tips now I know what To tell my phone to do most of the time I don’t think of those things. I all was used the stove timer.
my best tool is the camera as I acts as an artist's minimizing glass. it's hard to get far enough away from the quilt either on the design wall or floor or bed to see it overall. the camera allows the image to stay small and SO often little design tweaks are necessary. *perhaps not if pattern making but definitely if you are designing yourself. As always your videos are so helpful!!
It’s funny everytime you said Siri my Siri came up. Lol I use the note and camera features for quilting. However I never thought about using the timer. Thank you for the ideas!
I keep at list of my rulers by size on the notepad on my phone. It has helped me several times to not purchase a ruler or template that I already have at home. I also keep a list of precut fabric and a description of the fabric so I know if I have what I need to make a pattern when I find a pattern I want to make.
Thanks for the interview with Irene. She is so sweet. I great teacher and a great person. I also did the quiltalong and have not gotten to the backing and quilting part. I need to get that done. I should set a deadline. You think? She is amazing and I will hope to do the next projects she plans. Thanks.Patty
It can I use to use it when cleaning places that was a catch all. Work 15 minutes as fast as you can then take a break for 15 then do it again until project was done.
I do have am older phone, but I'm in the market to get a new one, so this video is timely. I use the notification alerts too. Not as much as you do, but yes; very handy. Thanks for the reminder (lol) to get a new phone...
I love this so much!! Idk WHY I haven't been doing this already, with the alarm aspect! I literally have alarms set for multiple important things, daily(I have squirrel syndrome..bad! Lol). I have the samsung note, so it comes in hand sooo much, when I think of great ideas, but I haven't been using it like you!! Thank you for all the amazing ideas! 🤗💖
Hi Everyone. I've been suffering from a head cold for a couple of weeks so this week's video is less project heavy than normal. I embraced technology years ago with my first Palm Pilot. I continue to find ways to keep my phone useful everyday. I hope you can use some of these tips.

I’ve had a cold this week too. Hope you feel better soon.🤧💕
You too 💕

Great video. Nice reminders about the ten minute tackle at a time for chores or projects I’ve lost interest in. Thank you Karen
Just Get it Done Quilts Feel better soon - love your videos!
Love your videos Karen. I am having trouble getting my sew jo back after being sick for over 2 weeks. I have a twin size quilt that I am hand quilting for a granddaughter. What an excellent tutorial. Especially like the reminder set and the timer to take a break (when free motion quilting). You do a great job!
All I have to do is turn on one of your videos and I find myself smiling! You have such a gift for communicating. My favorite useful phone sewing tool is UA-cam. I watch tons of videos for tips, tricks, techniques, and inspiration. ❤✂️🧵
Notepad is an app I use for EVERYTHING!!
A very useful app... Robert Kaufman Quilt Calc... useful to calculate binding, backing, sashing, etc. A great app!!

Agreed with the Robert Kaufman QuiltCalc app! Very handy tool to have for double checking that your math is right.
Love this app
Yes, echo the Robert Kaufman Quilt Calc...use its all the time! I also use my camera a lot for documentation, trying layouts, color value, etc.
Love Kauffman app
oh fantastic thank you !
I love your tip to use the camera in B/W mode to check value. It’s been INVALUABLE! lol
I take photos for inspiration but I've been keeping them in separate albums: plants, ironwork/grilled etc. Maybe i should choose the best for an inspiration album!
What a great idea❣️🤩😆😁🌞💫✨🙏🏻🤟🏼🌹 just brilliant 💫✨😍😎

I really like your tip for 30 minutes a day of guilt-free uninterrupted sewing. Also, your tip for doing what you don’t love for 10 minutes, that’s bearable.
I practice several of your suggestions with my smart phone. I always take a photo of my machine settings for a project.
Jo Brown especyhor the serger, love it!
Wow! What a terrific idea - one that will save a lot of anguish!
YAY! You're back! missed you!
I like to use my phone to watch quilting videos, tutorials and blogs. I also borrow audiobooks from the library to listen to while quilting. Your imagery photos of where to get inspiration was genius. You have an artist’s eye. 📱📸
This series is AMAZING!!
I’d love to see a video on squaring up a Queen size quilt
The Libby app is a newer, improved version of Overdrive for library books. I use Downcast for podcasts and Feedly for blogs. Great video. Thanks. I am trying to get our program committee to have you as a speaker next year!
Quilting Calc app I found to be very useful for all kinds of quilting measurements, calculating how much yardage, and so forth
I started binge-watching your videos and now I am hooked.
From a class I took at quiltcon I use PhotoGrid to test drive different block layouts
I use my phone for so much. My screen time report is embarrassing. I have multiple alarms to remind me to do things other than quilting, such as getting my kid off the bus and make dinner! I agree. Every one should put it on your bucket list
Great hint thank you from Switzerland
I use the phone to take pics of items i mend when I have to take something complicated apart it helps me put it back together or helps we recreate something new from something I’ve taken apart.
Good idea
I did that when I had to replace my clothes dryer belt. :-)
just used an app to put a grid over an inspiration photo, now i can turn it into a quilt!
What is the App you used?

I love the timer concept for that kick in the “_ss” I need to just get going on something! Glad to know I’m not the only one who has that problem. 🤪
Your timer tips are wonderful...thanks 🇦🇺
I use Quilters Paradise quilt calculator to calculate borders, binding, and backing. I have it as a favorite and it is in the top bar on my iPad for easy access. In the store, it is on my phone. it amazes me how much I have to learn. You are so awesome. thankyou so much.
GREAT IDEAS! THANKS FOR SHARING.
Your wonderful. Thanks for sharing
Terrific ideas!!🌺
You can even get inspiration from bathroom tile patterns.
✋ I’ve had a couple of those moments too
I love this video, well done!! I never thought about setting a reminder to straighten my back, relaxing our fingers. I will be

that Aviatrix quilt is beautiful, stunning and fascinating all at once. It has a lot going on.
That's an important one. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the ideas!
Great ideas!! Lord knows I put off organizing my scraps and just cleaning up my sewing room!
Hope you’re feeling better! I discovered your channel because I binge UA-cam videos while quilting. Love your timer suggestions and because my phone was sitting to my iPad while watching this I now have all your Siri reminders.....my phone takes instructions well! 😉

30 minutes makes me feel so much better
Yes!!! I've been grading nonstop from 4-11 to help my students. I feel miserable. I'll start setting 30 mins to sew for myself.
@@angiereyes2004 Good for you Angela - it works so well when I want to get an onerous task out of the way instead of procrastinating. Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year!!
Thanks for the great video-yep you aren't alone with the crappy cold, get well soon.
Get better soon
Straight forward, to the point, and useful. You get a big A+ for this one. Oh, and well planned. (I hate it when people ramble and forget what they're saying.)

Great ideas!! Thanks
Patty
Feel better. Another great video.
thanks
Evernote is great for keeping track of patterns, material requirements, fabric choices/swatches. I have it on my chromebook and phone so if I'm shopping, I can check to see if I need more of something or check to see if fabrics will match. Thanks for sharing
such great tips , and your right why do i have this expensive phone if i don't use it !
I was watching this on my tablet, when the image went and the Hey Siri page came up. She was listening to you and was awaiting instructions!
Hilarious. My phone also responds better to my boyfriend saying “ hey Siri” than when I say it. Too funny
Mine did the same! Gave me a good laugh this morning!
😂🤣😂😝
Perfect
Robert Kaufman has an app for calculating boaders, binding and lots more. Can't make a quilt without it!
Loved this...I’m a Creative at Apple and it was amazing to see how you use your phone to quilt. Quilting is my passion too and your videos are so well done!
Always happy to help 🍏
such great tips! 👍 thanks for sharing. I've been setting my timer more often... amazes me how much I can get done in 10 mins.

Which stash app are you using. There are several different apps available.
Stash star fabric
Overdrive have always been my go to for audio book listening while sewing! I found my favorite mystery novel while trying to find a new series to listen to for a difficult quilt.
And UA-cam is always great, I’ve been using it to catch up on all my videos (including this one) while working on a postage stamp quilt.
Thanks for all of the wonderful tips
Thank you for sharing!
Brilliant! Things you just don't think about. It's all right there in front of my face and I don't even see it. Thank you!
I've already outsourced my memory to my phone. Thank you for the color theory series tutorials. I refer to them frequently. I made a value quilt and I'll be darned, it actually looks great!!! My quilting went from, uh, ok to wow.
Thanks for sharing...it’s tricky but the effort is worth the results
Even though we had them ten years
I don’t think I’ve ever used mine that way I’m not that computer savvy .
Thanks for the tips now I know what
To tell my phone to do most of the time I don’t think of those things.
I all was used the stove timer.
What a great video!
Great video! Very helpful. Thank you.
I recently found your channel and I'm in love with all your videos! Thank you for creating bees and please create more! Have a lovely day.
I also Love audible and overdrive while sewing
👍
So brilliant!!! I never thought to put reminders on my phone. Thank you again for your mentorship.
I love these ideas!
Great tip about the stretching time. That is a great one. My chiro says I should stretch more as I too slouch when working on the machine.
my best tool is the camera as I acts as an artist's minimizing glass. it's hard to get far enough away from the quilt either on the design wall or floor or bed to see it overall. the camera allows the image to stay small and SO often little design tweaks are necessary. *perhaps not if pattern making but definitely if you are designing yourself. Good point. I always say that your quilt has three views. In your face, from two feet away and from across the room. 👍
It’s funny everytime you said Siri my Siri came up. Lol I use the note and camera features for quilting. However I never thought about using the timer. Thank you for the ideas!
LOL...I had the sam problem while I was editing
I keep at list of my rulers by size on the notepad on my phone. It has helped me several times to not purchase a ruler or template that I already have at home. I also keep a list of precut fabric and a description of the fabric so I know if I have what I need to make a pattern when I find a pattern I want to make.
How many times does that happen? Many in my case, so annoying. Definitely a good idea.
I have done the same thing with my list of Accuquilt dies. It is very easy to forget which dies I have when I am standing in the store.
Wow. Precuts. A lot of work to input, no?
Thanks for the interview with Irene. She is so sweet. I great teacher and a great person. I also did the quiltalong and have not gotten to the backing and quilting part. I need to get that done. I should set a deadline. You think? She is amazing and I will hope to do the next projects she plans. Thanks.Patty
Thank You!! As crazy as it sounds, I didn't know how to create albums on my phone until I watched this video...☺ you should see ALL my new albums 😂
👍
Great video and reminders of how we can use our phones to help our quilting and our lives!! Thanks so much Karen!!!!
I occasionally use the Robert Kaufmann app to calculate backing and border fabrics. It is easy to use and is pretty accurate.
nice! the timer method can be used in all fields of life
It can I use to use it when cleaning places that was a catch all. Work 15 minutes as fast as you can then take a break for 15 then do it again until project was done.
Yet another insightful video to help us make the quilts we want to make. Thank you.
Thanks! I use a lot of these, but I still got some new ideas. I love your videos! Keep the great ideas and inspiration coming!
Just wonderful tips, Thankyou, I’m so glad I found you!
Schmetz has a nice app. And amazon for ordering notions, lol.
Amazon! I order so many sewing supplies from them.
I do have am older phone, but I'm in the market to get a new one, so this video is timely. I use the notification alerts too. Not as much as you do, but yes; very handy. Thanks for the reminder (lol) to get a new phone...
I use the calculation app. Helps me so many times when I am working on a quilt.
🕛 we need!! Thanks so much! Get well soon.
You always give such great informative wisdom and advice! Thanks so much. Certainly hope you feel better soon.
