I know that we all have had moments when we are too afraid to cut our fabric. I wish I could have you all in for a workshop but this video will have to do.
🙏 for your son 🌹
Thank you
Well, you could do a workshop and we could all fly to Toronto!!!!! . . . but the virus. Oops. Maybe someday.
I think we’ve been so saturated with matchy matchy prints it’s hard in the beginning to break out of collections & bundles with confidence. I love your videos. They’re informative without being “my way is the only way’. Love love love your hair!
That would be a very big class !!
Hope your son is doing well. 👍😎
I think I gravitate to scrappy quilts because of my total lack of knowledge in this area, and the fact, this is one hobby I want to enjoy and not obsess over.
Yes me too. I’m as inspired by the ladies of Gee’s Bend as I am with Karen. I will continue to make the designs that my heart tells me. But I watch Karen’s organized, logical and very watchable videos. Perhaps by osmosis.
I'm a sewer, not a quilter and I still watch your videos!
Thank you
By the way, I really like how your hair is looking.
Judy Wymore I was going to say the same thing!! I’m liking how her natural gray is coming in. Looks so nice!
agree!!! Looking silver foxy Karen!
I was going to make the same comment. It somehow makes her look younger...
Same thought here... looks great!!
Exactly what I was going to say! Like your hair before, Karen, but it's looking great now! I know that appearance is not important in the grand scheme of things, but a lot of women are dealing with hair issues thanks to quarantine and it's nice to receive compliments...
Its so reassuring when you say "stick with me and I'll show you how to do it". Ahhh. ☺
Hi there Karen I'm sitting here really listening lol lol (smiles)xx
The number of times I've determined that a fabric isn't "quite right" and I've gone off to the quilt stores to buy more! Staying "safe at home" has certainly helped me to "trust in the pattern" ! Enjoyed this tutorial very much.
I too have been forced into decisions lately
The most beautiful quilt I've ever seen was made by hand by my great grandmother who was a Choctaw native American. She used scraps of cloth left over from the clothes she made for her family. She used no pattern, no color theory, just stiched them together randomly. It was the most precious thing ever. Over the years it saw so much use that it finally deteriorated and had to be discarded. A sad day indeed. I sorely wish I had a picture of it.
It sounds special
What a treasure!
Your videos are very good! I am an experianced quilter of 70 who has been quilting by hand for 45 years and I must say your videos are so simple, clear and easy to understand! You are a great teacher.
Thank you very much.
Ohhhhhhh...that is me. THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH
Jumping of a cliff free diving...lol Perfect description!
Your tip about taking a black and white foto has been such a big help for me!
❤I have to hurry up and make this baby quilt before the baby gets too big for it ❤ It’s not going to be very grand, we all know how messy babies can be ❤
You go girl! 150,000!
I pray I'll get as organized as you are, someday. ☺️
Thank you so very much for this video . I often struggle with choosing fabrics . I know I will reference this video time and time again !
I only just found you but I needed this post as I have been stuck in the overthinking spiral for waaay too long. Thank you so much 👍🏻
I think what I like so much about you and your channel is, of all the countless channels that show you how to make cute things, you go deeper. You teach more fundamental skills that so many of us don’t consider. Thank you so much!!!
😊 thank you
Hi Karen, I hope ypu get the subscribers you need soon.
I have subscribed to you 3 times now. For some daft reason I end up unsubscribed. So maybe it's worth telling people to check they are still subscribed occasionally.
Thanks for the latest tutorial, it was very inspiring.
I love your hair. It is coming it beautiful
Thank's! Have a nice day!
Love your videos and LOVE your hair. You look beautiful. You never need to color it.
Oh thank you!
You are a frickin' rockstar! Thank you! Fast, Fun & Informative information.
Thanks for watching!
I love your videos. You are a good teacher.
You have me hooked on Tula Pink's fabrics. I don't have a lot of fabric sources other than Joann's without driving 50 miles. Jordan Fabrics gave me Kaffe Fasset. LOL
30 seconds in and have to say...you look FABULOUS!
And now...I have a desire to pull a mess of uglies and make another "Walk Around The Park". Thanks Karen.
😊 thank you
I love your videos. You have a lovely calming voice which gives me confidence to try new things.
You look fabulous! The video was also informative, but that was what struck me hardest - how great you look!
😊
I love your videos and am trying to watch ALL of them.
Taking a black and white picture is the best idea. I did this recently and it worked great!
This video made me laugh so hard !!🤣
Thank you for that
When ever a day is to long or stressful

I got so happy watching it!
I love quilting n playing with fabric!

I love your hair gray
Rewatching and taking notes!
To a fabulous teacher. I’m in Tx. So wish we were closer. I am in the process of teaching a 16 yer old to quilt, so after each session I remind her to watch your show. Starting with the first ones. They are so informative. Keep up the great work. Your fellow quilters Gloria.☝️🧵✝️❤️
I am just learning to quilt. I know nothing. So glad I found you and your videos. I read some of your comments. Seems your thinking about a hair redo. It makes me think of scripture in the bible. A woman's hair is her glory.
Yes your hair is looking good😊
I just love watching your videos you say out loud what I think in my head!!!!
Love your videos tutorials. You really know your fabric and sewing and quilting. You are so helpful in all aspect of my quilting. Thank you so much from Innisfil Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
There’s a wonderful place here in Ft. Worth where you can order material that they print on demand. I found a pattern that I just loved. Shades of turquoise with white crosses. Beautiful. So I ordered two yds to just be the main part of the quilt, planning to add to the sides to size it up. Well, the material was so precious that I couldn’t cut it. And...never could match to my satisfaction, anything to piece on the sides. So that wonderful, costly fabric is still in my closet three years later. Yes....I could make a lap quilt and probably will have to, but that’s not what I had in mind. So be careful buying precious fabric.
Hi. I live in Fort Wort. What is the name of the shop that prints on demand? Sounds awesome! Don't beat yourself for keeping the fabric. Just enjoy it.
Love your hair Karen! Great video as always!
I must admit it shocked me when I went to edit.
Love your videos. Absolutely love your red hst wall hanging, can't stop analyzing it.
Thank you for another informative video. Besides all that....want to say you look radiant, your hair "fits" you. Style and color.
Thank you. I think I have one more week until I need to cut it
Thank you. Nice greetings from Germany 🤗🌸🙂
✋
Going to have to watch this several times. I don't have a good understanding of hue and value. Tks for making this video.
I have a whole series on colour theory for beginnersua-cam.com/play/PLchS26NEYgVzgO4TjvwNQzHECwJS0b6KE.html
Completely unrelated to how much I LOVE YOUR HAIR... I am learning so much from you!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Thank you
Trust in the design. I'm a newbie. Just finished my second Crib quilt with my BFF as my Mentor. She's been quilting since about 8. ...coming up on half a century experience! On my first quilt I decided on a Jelly Roll. She suggested some extra blocks. I got all blocks finished and started laying them out. BFF advised how to lay out. ...I tried about 11-ty-70 other layouts...and none were working for me. ...it was those extra blocks! I got advise from family members (non-quilters) who said BFF's layout was beautiful! ...so I backed my ears and went with it. >I< didn't get even partially comfortable with the layout until it was half quilted. I didn't 100% like it until I got the border on. There's so much more to this awesome skill of quilting than meets the eye!
You are amazing. I always learn from you and am inspired by you. ❤️
Karen!!! I love love your hair!!! 😁😁. And YOU are my fav UA-cam ❤️
😊 thank you
I like your hair this way...looks good!
Your Meadowland quilt turned out beautiful!❤️
Thank you
Thank you so much for this video this is always the most daunting task for me to complete!
Thoughts I haven’t thought of already starting out as a new quilter. Lol
Speaking of colour - Wow! I am growing out my grey and was worried before that it would make me look old and tired. You look radiant! Your skin look amazing with your grey. I love your colour videos where you show fabric with your colour wheel as I need that to "get it". This will be my "go to" video every time I start a new quilt. Separating my stash into 12 colours has been a major game changer and the process of actually doing it taught me a lot. Thank you so much, Karen.
My daughter pointed out that people her age are spending a lot of money to get silver hair. 😂
I love that people are embracing their grey hair. I have earned every one of mine!
I’ll be honest....I was wearing a beige shirt when I started filming and changed into my favourite red shirt because I thought I looked washed out. I’ll need new clothes with the new hair
LOL You just gave me a really good reason to justify my planned clothes shopping when we can really shop! Thanks, Karen!
@@JustGetitDoneQuilts
@@JustGetitDoneQuilts That red shirt was very flattering on you. Very cheery!
I love all your advice and I can totally identify with the voices in the head problem. I find that when I have expensive fabric it is harder to cut into. I absolutely love making scrap quilts because I never fear wasting any fabrics. If I get too caught up in perfectionism, I look at some of the quilts that both my grandmothers made. They were fearless about combining patterns and colours and they are absolutely my favourite quilts because they have so much personality.
Thanks for sharing!!
This was very helpful. You look so much happier today and your smiling face brightened up my day. Thanks I needed that. It’s not always about quilts it’s community that makes this special.
Community ✋
Greetings from Germany ! Thank you so much vor your advice and knowledge🥰
You are so right. I’d seen all my life when I started quilting 20 years ago. I didn’t realize how important the community would become in my life. It’s been super!
I noticed that too. Good to see 😊👍💕

Thank you Karen. Very helpful video.
Karen, your haircut in this video is lovely. It’s soft and frames your face so well and works great with your eyes and glasses, and complements your ears and earrings.
Speaking of color.....those red tones look fabulous on you!
This red has always been my colour 😎
Great tips . Love the hair. X
I like your hair! Very nice.
I am color wheel challenged. I have never been able to understand the color wheel and I've been trying to learn it for sixty something years (at 72 I doubt that there will be a big revelation)! That's probably why I dress so monochromaticlly and prefer two to three fabric quilts. Oh yes, I've just realized that kits are wonderful (if they appeal to me)!
Our brain can process colour differently. Some people are more sensitive then others.
Your hair looks really good today. I let my hair go "natural" before my first grandchild was born and found the grey suits my skin tone better than the brunette out of the bottle.
Sometimes nature knows best!(you know, platinum is very vogue nowadays!)🤫
I've watched most your videos and just found this that I hadn't. In LESS than two years you have more than doubled your subscribers. At the beginning, you state you are 'so close to 150 subscribers'. As far as I'm concerned it should be a million!!
Wow, thank you!
You cracked me up at 8:17 ". . . and now the voices start in your head." I've never quilted, have been watching your videos to get in gear to begin, but I could just see this happening to me, have felt that way on other sewing projects 😄
🙏🏻🙏🏻 Praying for your son and all of you!
LOL...those voices
I love your hair. Do not to color it!! It looks GREAT!!
Your hair looks great! Thanks for a great video!
I have only made 4 quilts by hand having Never made a quilt and never having tube. Oh if only I had then, this knowledge. So now my 7 year old puppy got her own quilt. She was so excited!. She loves laying on the couch with me and my quilt. So when she got her own, she was a happy girl! I feel way over my head watching these but ur very funny and enjoy them. Thank you!
Karen I like the colour of your hair and the style!
Your quilt turned out lovely. You are right set a timeline and the fidgeting stops, the quilting starts and progress starts. Thank you Karen, really enjoy your podcasts, 🌻
A very helpful video. And you look fantastic! Retirement is agreeing with you!
Your hair looks MAHVALOUS! ☺️
😊
Wow when did you jump into my head. I have made myself learn and then apply and not to fret later. I never point out problems when I show other people my finish. I have learned that I am always learning to quilt better. I love every phase of the process from picking fabrics to putting my own spin on things. I do not worry about cutting because I have a ball with my leftovers and or oopses. Thanks for your down to earth approach and helping everyone new or not new to quilting know that they are never the only one to go through a particular problem. And my friends and I have done enough charity quilts to know that someone will love it.
I have taken MANY design courses and they all start with a recap of color theory!!! ITS SO IMPORTANT
Totally love your hair
Awesome video. Personally I enjoy choosing fabrics. I don't stress out, I trust my gut. And if ever I'm questioning a choice I ask a neighbor or someone who knows nothing about quilting about my color choices. Usually an untrained eye can pick out the mistakes real quickly.
That is a good idea. I never thought to ask someone who did not quilt about color. I also go with my gut, sometimes it is very hard to find just the right color. The last time was a gold sort of a burnt gold it took about three weeks to find it. But the quilt turned out very nice.
I think your video popped up for a reason. I've got so many projects to do one just a new one so I'm going to cut into the fabric tomorrow 😎 love to be able to get the the states one day, stay safe everyone. Jodie Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
Your hair is beautiful!!!! Glad you are embracing the natural look.
Dear Karen, thanks so much for your video. I did purchase the 3 - 1 Color Tool. Sorry I didn’t buy through you link....I’m figuring this stuff out. Anyway this video was very helpful as well as the color study videos. Have been sewing and quilting for years but I stay in my comfort zone for sure....!? Need to be a little more intensional and adventurous. Send blessings to you, family and son.
GREAT information! And BTW.... I am loving your hair. 😉
I will be making my first quilt from scraps left by my grandmother and I want to use them to piece together a quilt I think she would have wanted to put together herself if she was here. The material has been in about two boxes for decades now because my mother was not into quilting and just made dresses for herself and my sisters. I like the ones you made and if the first one is completed in a decent amount of time I will be making another one from fabric I buy and see if it turns out the way I want it to be.
I love your hair! I really really love watching your tutorials!!
Thank you
Great video ! Glad you don't make colour theory complicated ! The Ontario College of Art has a colour theory course , its intensive! U of T in its art program has a colour theory course ,which discusses how certain colors are based on how light bends etc . You version is simple straight forward and straight to the point . I was wondering if you have done a video on cutting matts ? I was wondering what to look for and how much pressure to apply when cutting and if the Matt's dry out ? There so many different kinds of cutting matts out there ,it can be confusing ! Thanks ,cheers.
It’s in the queue
I have a good stash of fabric because I buy lots of remnants. I don't always have the exact color I would like and sometimes I don't have enough of a color. I have started getting the attitude that I am just going to use what I have because way back when people would make quilts they used what they had the majority of the time. They didn't go out and buy fabric all the time. If my quilt colors don't perfectly match that's fine. I want my quilts to look like a person made them, not a machine.
That's why it's not always about the hue. You can get contrast through value and pattern too.
Just love your fabrics! Yummy!
I really like your videos. They are extremely pedagogical without being "I alone know the right answers". They hit a nerve with me. Thank you!!!
Thank you
Hello my friend
Picking fabrics is the absolutely most difficult part for me. I must be colour blind because oh my I find it to be so hard. I'll keep trying and I'm sure your tips and tricks will help. Thanks for the advice and encouragement.
I want to thank you for doing these videos. You chose a niche for emphasis that no one else was doing - not the tools, not the overall design, not the quilting. You chose how to do all the small steps for a successful outcome. It is SOOOO helpful. And, your videos are so understandable. I have watched some 2 or 3 times, but that was me not you (color theory, i.e.). This video is especially helpful. I have LOTS of patterns and LOTS of fabric, but Could Not Cut. This will get me going.
Thanks for all your great advice! Very helpful
Oh, my...the voices in MY head sound just like yours! “What ifs” are my downfall...!!! 😬 Thank you for helping me recognize this! Sending your son healing thoughts and prayers...🌸
I learn in spite of myself. You are a good teacher. I make every mistake you point out but I usually do not do it again after your session.
Mistakes are part of the journey. We should have a bingo card 😎
How much do I love your VIDEOS!!!!?!😂❤😂
I love all your videos.
The more we do the better we get at it. Live this! Thank you.
i'm almost done with my first quilt. it's a total product of getting ideas from videos, grabbing up some cheap random* fabric, and sitting down to create from my own imagination. no pattern, it's made up of just traditional hst's on the front, and on the back big almost solid black irregular blocks framing up irregular smaller pieced irregular blocks of every tidbit of scraps i ended up with from the front.
so the front ended up looking just like something found on great gramma's bed, and the back is strikingly modern. the front was great for brushing up on sewing and the back was a very enjoyable art project. the whole thing is quirky and imperfect and wonky-- just like me-- and i love it ☺️
*and i mean random-- i am the rare colorblind female and i got it bad 😋. but i've learned that i can either kill my soul by just not creating because if it, or make art but hate hate hate it because of the struggle of trying to color-conform, ... or just do what looks good to me. and i've never steered myself wrong.
What I've done in the past is select three or four colors, place them next to each other until I'm happy with the way the pieces look side by side. I cut blocks and strips, alternating in a pattern. Pretty basic, but it seems to work, and the results are pleasing to me. Most quilts I've sewn are suicide survivor quilts. I generally ask what colors they like, and go from there.
That is a lovely use of your time and talent. Bless you!
I can tell this is too much for me to think about. I have a simple strategy because I am simple. I pray. I see a striking fabric at the store that leaps out at me. I get a few matching fabrics. Then I search for a block that makes sense for the print . Then I have fun. I know what I can handle and I keep it simple.
I came across this site by accident, and I am totally hooked. This video is especially helpful because I struggle with color and values, in quilting and in watercolor painting. The use of black and white photos will be very helpful.
Thank you. Fabric stash, here I come! Well, maybe after just one more video...
Great video, love the hair color.
Excellent video thank you.
