Paulas choice is definitely a brand that is designed to be and is successful because people repurchase the same product(s) again and again. It doesn’t need to rely on constant new releases to keep up sales numbers. Which is probably why they barely release anything new

Paula's Choice is one of the few brands I am excited to try new products from. The no nonsense marketing and quality of the products meet my needs. The lip serum is great. So is the wash off exfoliant. No reason to disregard them just because they aren't trending. I like the discoloration serum, the spf moisturisers, the retinol boost serum, and many others. No idea why people get stuck on the BHA exfoliant and don't try other things from the brand. They offer way more. Not to mention that Bryan Barron, their research director, is doing live chats on UA-cam and answers questions about skincare issues. He really knows what he's talking about.

I've used so much Paula's Choice since I first discovered them 15 years ago. I think that what makes them a staple is that they have products to address skin issues at every age. The specific products I used when I was 27 are mostly not the same products I use now. Same categories, just different formulations, textures and concentrations. I think that's what is brilliant about PC. I really appreciate how thoughtfully they've expanded the line. 2% BHA liquid and body cream, 1% retinol, all the antioxidant serums, RIDE OR DIE.

Great video! When it comes to black skin/ makeup Iman (IMAN) actually paved the way for Fenty and subsequently Fenty Beauty. The fact that it took so long for someone to successfully build upon IMAN’s proof of concept is mind boggling.

Normally if I use a moisturiser under my SPF it's too much for my skin and I end up looking shiny as hell, but if I skip the moisturiser my skin end up feeling tight after a while. I'm not usually into 'celebrity' brands of skin care and make-up, but the Fenty Skin moisturiser and Pro Filtr hydrating foundation suit my skin perfectly. Cleanse and tone etc, have been Caudalie for years. Being of a, cough! certain vintage 😏 I'm a teense stuck in my ways, but 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. I do love to know what else is new though, just in case something peaks my curiosity, and James has done that.

I have an answer for Khiels! Their best product by *far* is their intensive hand cream. In the winter, my hands get raw and cracked and it's pretty painful. Their hand cream is unscented so it doesn't sting, and somehow sinks in within a minute or two and lasts for hours. I was told it was developed for nurses who wash their hands all the time and it strips their skin. Give it a try!!

i'm the same way with Paula's Choice. i like a few stuff, and they're great, but i don't feel compelled to try everything from them. that's interesting. must be in the way they advertise? they don't really make you feel like you NEED to try/have everything. they split their skincare into categories based on skintypes/concerns so it makes it easy to just pick what you actually need.

Kiehl's and Clinique may seem old, but theres a reason why they are still around.. because their products are good and not gimmicky and trending like many other newer brands these days. They stood the test of time and respected in the skincare realm by many generations for a long time. Just because it isn't a new and viral brand or product, it doesn't mean its not good.

Hi James I have to say that for someone like me (with hyper reactive, rosacea and eczema prone skin) Paula's choice is a really good brand. I have NEVER had a bad reaction to anything I've tried from them and that's unheard of with every other brand. Now I do have my favourite products from them that ARE worth the money, but I've also had a couple I haven't really liked that much (although still without a huge adverse reaction to them). Here in the UK it's unusual to be able to return skincare you can't use or don't like, but you can return stuff to them. My skin is EXTREMELY dry and at 50 fully menopausal, so I really struggle to find moisturisers that keep my skin comfortable all day or all night. Most moisturisers targeted at dry skin just aren't rich enough for me and I've tried so so many. The clinical ultra rich moisturiser is the only day cream that has kept my skin comfortable in cold weather and yet sinks in to where I can apply my spf (ultrasun). Their soothing body butter is a bit richer and I use that as my night cream, but still soaks into the skin without a massively greasy layer overnight. I like the calm range, the omega range and some of the dry skin range too - that's a lot of products to like from a single brand. It's not an affordable brand overall, so I buy my favourites (and use other things from other brands with those) however I could buy my whole routine from them and be happy with it. I think that's probably the only brand I could say that about. For me it's a brand I look at the new releases with interest, but will only try those if I think they either fill a gap in my routine, or might be a replacement for something I no longer really like. Best wishes.

I clicked on this because I was so nervous about what you were going to say about Paula’s Choice, but I ended up agreeing with you completely. I think their prices are also a bit steep, so if I’m splurging on a unique skincare product, I don’t really tend to go for them for some reason. Maybe it’s BECAUSE they’re so tried and true? Like if I’m buying something new I want to have a new experience and see how new ingredients work on me. With PC, we know the ingredients. And they work! But they aren’t unique. The only thing I will say, is that they have one of the best lip sunscreens and I really wish it was sold in stores instead of just online.

I do love the Paula's Choice 2% BHA. That's is great for when I have a zit as a spot treatment or if I feel a bit more oily and my pores need a good shakedown. They also have a good variety of retinol at various levels in different forms so if you'd rather a cream or more of a gel you have your pick. I went way too hard with retinol at first and took a break but was able to use PC at a very mild level and it really helped me get accustomed to it.

I have literally four products I repurchase from them: the BHA 2%, a Glycolic serum thing, the retinol and the SPF 50 for my body and face when I'm on a retinol routine. And I have NO interest in getting anything else bc these work so well and remain foundational in my routine. I don't need 3 BHA exfoliants and 4 AHA ones, and then 2 moisturisers. Love that about Paula's Choice. Timeless products that just work, no fluff. I introduce the fun with cleansers and moisturisers and occasionally masks and sunscreen from the other brands that I feel won't stick so I can switch them in and out every season lol

Things she has never apologized for or addressed. She also in no way did anything revolutionary or new even with Fenty. I'm trying their tranexamic acid serum and the clean bee as a second cleanser soon so we'll see if those enter my holy grail rotation, but I definitely agree that they lean too hard on the Green Clean limited editions (which also create false scarcity to encourage impulse consumerism... not my fav lol). I also tend to feel disinclined to purchase their other products after finding the ones I love and know work for me. IMO, the reason for that may be because PC's products are similar to medicine; something to be used to resolve a specific issue because of its science-backed, no-nonsense quality. The brand's pulling power doesn't come from novelty but from product reliance, and people generally don't go swapping out their medicine just for fun. This is why I think once you find a good product from PC, you don't feel inclined to check out any others.

I actually think this is Paulas Choice marketing objective. They harness die-hard fans of PRODUCTS, who will continue purchasing those products for the rest of their lives. They don't want people to try something they may not like and generate bad opinions or reviews if it isn't appropriate for them. They want to know what kind of skin you have, your age and your location/climate, and they market appropriate products based off your information. They aim specific products at direct, intentional markets to increase long-term, happy customers. I genuinely think that is and has always been their marketing goal. Especially because their products - although not excessively expensive, are not super cheap - they want you to buy something and love it. From a fellow comms & marketing professional, I think they do a terrific job here. Plus Paulas perks gives their customers the option to try so many products for free without having to buy it, and that's a great way to try something regret and bias free.
I do find the branding very clever.
