    Hello Chris. Congratulations on your new coming course! Course family grows up.
    Regarding pre-ring effects by engaging linear mode, I agree that this would be a good topic to handle in a future video. There is some material about it, but I find it is something that not many talk about.

      You're right, it's a complicated topic, but there's ways to break it down in a simple way. Noted!

    I do my own masters. I typically use the widening on the brainworks V3 Eq plugin, and/or do high frequency boost on the sides. I never go beyond 110-114% on the widening

      The Brainworks V3 Eq has definitely a nice sounding imager... I mastered with this one more than once... Great choice, bro!

    Hi Chris, thanks for all your great video's and tutorials. Just a (stupid) question: why is it so important to do a master session after exporting a project to a stereo mix. Why can't you do these last steps also in the project on the L/R mix bus ?

    • @scmartin
      @scmartin 25 днів тому +1

      Great question - I'm wondering this as well...especially when doing your own mastering. I would think it would make it easier to tweak mix aspects if a mastering adjustment affected the outcome.

    I always forget about cubase imager and as I only have a couple of plugins for width and I find them to not really do a good job I've recently been having fun creating my own width on tracks,
    Duplicating tracks, hard panning them, adding some track nudging, delay, slightly different reverb timings and very slightly different eq, finishing with cubase frequency for some extra m/s separation, it's such a nice feeling having so much control over the soundstage especially with vocals
    Edit I commented too early, just got to the part where you use frequency... One thing that's just jogged my memory, is there a way to solo out the bands in frequency ? I could have sworn I've used solo on that before but last time I checked I couldn't find it..unless I'm thinking of a different eq :/

    Great video Chris. As far as mastering goes, I do my own for two reasons; if it's just a mix I want to listen to and I can hear what I may need to change in a mix often better when I do a test master. This I always do if I want to release a song because then I will have it professionally mastered but I always do a master myself to hear any last minute thing I may need to go back in the ix and fix.

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  29 днів тому +2

      You got it! This is my thinking also, I think everyone should master his/her music, whether you sent to a mastering engineer or not, it makes you a better mixer en the end.

    Thanks Brother. I am wondering how to confirm if we need to enhance the stereo width. e.g if I listen to loops drums completely in mono then going back to my master. there is huge difference in decision.

    HI thank's for the video. For me works very well only to increase sides by 3dB max between fr 500Hz-1kHz. One more rule as faster song as less increases.

    When in your mastering do you work on the wider aspect? At the end , just before the limiter/maximiser ?

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  28 днів тому +1

      late in the chain, before Limiting, unless I use M/S EQ to tone shape at the same time, then it depends on my chain

      You mean my speaking voice on the video? I record through the SPL Channel One MK3, which I will make a video on in the next few weeks, and I have a bit more EQ, and a bit of multiband compression in Post! Glad you like it :-)

    Good question for the end of your video, effectively I master my own mixes and it’s so hard to do, because I have to switch from mixer to mastering ingeneer , I’m really struggling with that. Of course I tried to rest myself for a few days before starting mastering, I tried to make some other mixing instead , and the only way to make it 🤘🏻 is to do some mastering for other people and by using this way switch to mastering mode . Does anyone feel the same?
    (Sorry for my bad english writing)

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  29 днів тому +1

      Yes, I agree, the mixing, and mastering mindset is completely different. I cover that in my upcoming course. So you're not the only one struggling with this :-)

    I would never widen the bass end of the spectrum of my master, or any bass type track really. Most importantly, I wouldn't do that on the master (mix bus). I don't even like doing it on other freq's cause I tend to hear smearing. Widening individual tracks is ok if done properly. As for the 20-200hz band here, I would be making it more mono actually, but probably just 120-ish hertz and down. This is just my approach. Take from it what you will.

    Hi. I got a question. I use OB-xd as a VST. I got three midi track and when my track go back to the beginning the sound change. Cubase doesn't keep the sound i choose. You know why. After choosing my sound is there a move i got to do to tell Cubase (this is the sound that i choose) Thanks.

      Hey Simon! Near the end of the chain most of the time, unless I'm tone shaping with MS EQ, then it might be earlier

      Been using either the Tomo Lisa or the Shadow Hills Class A Compressor, each of which has stereo widening AND a mono maker. I normally set the mono maker between 70Hz and 80Hz, then set the stereo widener anywhere between 105% and 115%. But I'm just practising... seeing what works. So this video was ROT ⏰ because I didn't think about raising the high frequencies on the sides.
      Thanks again, Chris!
