Just if you didnt know yet: the uad pultec Applies about 1db gain when Turned on. That Might lead into your „Sounds Good if on“ besides the saturation circuit
AMPEX ATR 102 is hands down my fav tool in my mastering chain, kinda refreshing to hear you're also using it almost like an EQ, I LOVE IT! Thanks for this epic informative video!
Hey Streaky. Thanks for sharing your key tools. Are you not using DMG Limitless? I've heavily used Pro-L2 and Elevate, and A/B'd them against Limitless and nearly every time I choose Limitless. It sounds significantly more open to me, plus has a pre-limiter clipper built in with oversampling. Up until I started using it, I was all about Pro-L2 but I'm finding Pro-L2 is not finding it onto my masters much anymore. Curious if you've experimented with Limitless.
Love DMG Limitless! Typically use it as my final limiter - the manual mode and band shaping really makes it special. Standard Clip into Limitless with a touch of its SWELL2 clipping absolutely killer at the end of the chain.
Thanks Streaky I still think you should be on Eastenders on the box replace dirty Den haven’t seen it for years yes I would come back . Thank you for such a great mastering course .
Streaky, I would love to hear about your hardware chain and how you integrate it with the software, especially if you still utilize the Lynx Hilo. Cheers.
How do you get green knobs on the Sontec? Just getting to grips with mine - great plugin! I now have all these, and some idea what they all do - very inspiring video
I'm 26, and i buy beats and record my vocals. I don't waste time trying to learn a bunch of things, just some Fabfilter + ozone plugins and i'm ok. Waves alone is 1,3+ GB thats crazy. Thats my first year learning mastering vocals and shit. Still feel like i don't know nothing. You help us a LOT Streaky.
Very interesting, please do a video of your hardware chain also! 😎 A question: I've noticed a trend on SM for mixers to specifically mold their tracks with pretty extensive compression and saturation on the mix bus and just leave the limiting and corrective EQ to the mastering engineer, what's your experience in 2023? And is there any benefit to that approach or would you always still prefer the old school way of handing over a mix with a large dynamic range?
@@Streaky_com Thanks, let me just dive a bit further into your answer there. What is mastering today? Is it 1) the stereo file processing itself with goal of refining the mix or is it 2) the procedure of sending the mix away to be assessed by a set of experienced ears in a really good monitoring environment? Because I've always been of the opinion that both 1 and 2 need to be fulfilled to be called Mastering. I've had this conversation a number of times during the last couple of years and my empirical data seems to suggest that only doing 1 also qualifies as mastering. There are so many mix engineers advertising their services as a mix/master sandwich and I just find it to be interesting as part 2 seems to be missing? I have no problem understanding why this is happening - smaller budgets, ITB processing is just as good and readily available to everyone, streaming releases require no song sequencing or DDP files etc. What's your take on this, is mastering on it's way to just being accepted (or even required) as part of the mix?
Thanks Streaky. I think a very helpful video would be to demonstrate why one piece of gear or plugin "doesn't work for this track" while another works well. What are you listening for in order to make that determination?
great video! I use Ozone maximizer (including soft clipper) and sometimes I also add another clipper to cut 2 db peaks before the limiter, is it bad to use 2 clippers in master bus?
@@Streaky_com Thanks Streaky! I’m also around 80% before. Ideally I want all before, thereby preserving the fingerprint of the converters. C’est la vie.
i saw one of your videos that you showed how to apply the reverb setting to all channel mixings instead of doing one by one. Could you give us a link again? it was a short i guess.
Question for Streaky or anyone who knows: The Pultec trick he talks about at 03:19, does anyone know what that trick is and the situation or instance he'd use said trick? Many thanks!

Do you know or have an opinion on Ableton 11 getting CPU about 40% cpu and popping. I'm talking Waves Kush Spitfire. I can't even run a mastering chain.. Three plugins, transformers and my PC is done popping right up to 90% cpu. Thanks for your work. That a Pultec knockoff?
I keep trying the UAD Pultec on my mixbus or mastering bus. I swear that it collapses the stereo image a little. Anyone else feel that? It isn’t as much an issue if you started a mix with it already on the 2 bus; I suspect you would just mix everything a pinch wider from the jump. But, when I add it after the fact, I swear it narrows the field a little, despite the significant level bump the plug-in defaults with.
Blessed love Teacher I give thanks for your teaching 🙏🏿 I been studying and following from nearly the start when you came on UA-cam Teacher.even enter few give away but I no luck yet but your teaching for me is more valuable than the gear but if I win one day I'll keep it to start a studio in Jamaica in my small talented town Red Ground Jamaica. Hey Streaky, I'm in the market for a new laptop. I will be using it only for recording artists and bands. There is a project coming up that I will need to record a 5 piece band in a live studio setup. What CPU and RAM do you recommend to handle the job and or other specs I'm not aware of??? Thanks
Can you please explain what program to use if I wanted to make my album join all together. If I remember correctly, Moby had and album were a single sound flowed through the entire album. Like one song flows into another, but you can control which songs you want to listen to with the controls.
I often run it before going out to the analogue chain, but usually after a bit of Eq. If I’m just doing something purely ITB, then I might play with the order. It can sound surprisingly good in unexpected places.
Awesome Vid, thanks for sharing !! I am addicted to the Sonalksis 315 compressor. I didn't realize this until 2021, when the c19 world event hit. I used that time to update my whole system. I didn't want to purchase it a second time(lost my ancient 20yr old email and thus license), so I thought to myself. Man I use this a lot, why don't I try to use another compressor !!?? Maybe 2 will work ? I been using this SOO long, maybe I should try something new!!?? Maybe I'm missing out!?!? I gave myself many months to trial and tinker around. The results were, no way. That compressor has some magic sauce. It does normal stuff normally but also does some extreme stuff very well. There is an auto-gain on there and wow. it just works right. This compressor is super clean/ almost no color but really lets you control the dynamics. It does things other plugins cannot. One of the reasons I want to share, is caz when I went to buy it for a second time, i noticed the site has not been updated in a long time. Maybe they need more love ? I haven't seen it in ANY videos !! If people don't know about it, they are missing out for sure. It does the business. The only other dynamics tool which people might not realize how useful it is > voxengo Elephant < this is useful for major changes. it does things other plugins cannot do. I use it mainly for material which has terrible dynamics, but I just want to hear the song. caz you know when you have a song and didn't mix it very well, you don't know if the song is worth anything, but you want to be able to listen to it sometime in the future. Elephant can do that major stretch and still sound half decent.
I never understood how you can have a set chain .. every genre is so different.. I couldn't imagine using my chain on trap beats as I use on say a country song.. I dunno maybe it's just me

Yeah only in the UAD version .. no idea why they added that 1db... Does it happen it the Analogue unit too?
for me the Fabfilter Pro L stay the most transparent and perfect limiter .... keep all emotions of my tracks. I love fabfilter plugins.

What are some E.Q and Compression you might use for mastering RnB, Soul, Gospel, House? Have a good week Professor

I think we can add a fourth for a lot of sterile digital mixes which is saturation and character. so tape, console, and/or saturator emulations

I know you’re a big fab filter fan but how do you think it compares to the iZotope Ozone equivalent dynamic eq?
You should try ASH by Acustica Audio as a clipper. The best by far and really really close to high end adc converters clipping
Amazing as usual streaky!
I got ONE question Streaky!!!
Are you using these plugins pre or post your analog chain?!
Love you Streaky, you da man!
Still hoping I’ll get an answer…just patiently waiting…any time now…

I confirm, 100% software here 🙂

will It cause phase issues with so much plugins in the chain? I have about 9 plugins in my master so wondering if that's the right way to do it.
Question for Streaky or anyone who knows:
The Pultec trick he talks about at 03:19, does anyone know what that trick is and the situation or instance he'd use said trick? Many thanks!
I’m guessing the old “Smiley Face” trick?
You boost and attenuate the bass section of a pultec at the same time, it’s a really old trick for adding more bass
Thank you both for that, really helpful!
Are you using this chain on every mix? Looks like you're just showing the various plugins you use, as needed.
