- In which I show you how to make curly hair for your dolls out of yarn. In this tutorial I show you how to make regular curly hair, and how to make ringlets of hair. I also show you how to make a middle part on your doll's hair. This is a new, improved version of my old curly hair tutorial.

Nice! I was thinking of doing a OC I made that had curly hair as a doll, but wondered how I would make the hair curly, luckily found this!

Hi Jeanne, the box under the video is a subscribe button, click on that and set up a youtube account then you click on that button and it should change from subscrib to subscribed. Thanks for sharing! Great tutorial. I wanted to curl yarn to use as a beard on my sock gnomes...this will be ideal glued to pieces of felt for the beard. I subscribed too.
I did this with wood dowels...with Red Heart super saver yarn...They stayed in the oven for about 2 hours then I let them cool completely...only parts a each curled. I carefully took them off. I’m not a knitter so I don’t have needles , I bought 1/4” & 7/16” dowels. I soaked them completely then put on parchment paper lined cookie sheets...
any other suggestions?

I used bulky yarn wrapped around a wooden spoon and left in the oven for 20 minutes after dipping it into boiling water, but the curls came out loose and the yarn is already straightened by now
You might need to leave them in longer or try a warmer temperature, or try just drying them outside the oven overnight. Another thing you could possibly try is using something metal to set them instead of wood, like a knitting needle or a hook, so that it gets hotter and aids setting them from the inside. But obviously be careful touching the hot metal. If none of that works you might want to try heat setting with something like a straightener on a low temperature. I'm working on a tutorial for that currently. I suspect the problem might be because you're using bulky yarn, so if all else fails you might need something with thinner individual strands.

Great tutorial, hopefully I can use it to make my favourite character from TV. I have a question, do you need sew wig cap on the doll?
If you don't want to sew the wig cap on, you might need to add elastic to the bottom of the cap (which you can easily do by crocheting over an elastic thread, or a hair band, if it fits your doll)

Nice curls! But…what if you wash your dolls? I think the curls get lost😢
Yeah I wouldn't machine wash a doll. If you need to machine wash a doll, I'd say you should just crochet the hair instead, like I did in this tutorial ua-cam.com/video/K1KhYRQKI3A/v-deo.html but I would just hand wash. And of course, you can always re-curl the hair if you need to wash the hair specifically

You can loosen the curls by using a wider rod when curling the hair. For the looser waves, I believe I used a size K knitting needle to curl the hair.
I tried this and it didn't work. Found another video that said to use acrylic yarn. Guess I'll try it.

How do I get your pattern
How long do the curls last before they come out?
They'll stay as long as they don't get wet, so far as I've seen. I have some dolls whose hair was curled a year ago and the curl is still holding.
Will it work with cotton yarn?
as far as I know this technique should work with a cotton yarn, as long as you can pull apart the individual strands. I haven't tried it with cotton though, so not entirely sure. It does seem to be easier to pull apart a softer yarn though.
Will these curls survive washing?
They won't, unfortunately. I think there's a way to make them last through a wash if you soak them in elmer's glue mixed with water though

Couldn't the hair be added straight to the head?
Sure, if you want. The wig cap is just if you don't want the scalp color to peak through. Otherwise you might have to add a LOT of hair to get full coverage, which might end up being too much volume in the hair, depending on your project. Either way will work fine

That probably means your oven was too hot or you left it in just a bit too long, this is easy to do and I've definitely done it myself. Some yarns are more vulnerable to this than others, though. If you have the time to wait, you could let the curls set by drying them overnight, instead of using the oven, to prevent this from happening completely.
