I mean it’s really even harder for me since I’m an international student and the those English numbers are killing me... you have someone who learned A whole different language in one year. I’m screwing up hard but I always have a positive aura around me. I hope things work better for you and me bro. The last year was a big change in my life. I had to leave my family and I had to learn a whole new language, had major depression while I’m here. It’s just tough. But I’m always positive.

    My biggest issue was my professors not explaining what the hell it was or why we would be using it. "Here is some abstract definition of a derivative/integral, here is how you solved a derivative/integral." That doesn't do shit. I think every calculus class should start off with showing some of the limits of what algebra can do, and why we need calculus to solve "the next level" of mathematics. I want to be clear on this, calculus is NOT intuitive until you understand why you're using it, and what it really is

      @@lesliegalloway9314 : My daughter was struggling with AP calculus. I told her calculus will be the easiest math class you will ever take. I told her just look on that inside flap of the book. They list all the rules and equations you need. Just look at your homework problem find the same form on the flap of the book and apply the appropriate rule. Don't pay any attention to the teacher. Now for tests you will have to remember the rules but that's relatively easy. She got a A no problem.

    • @uberlolzzz
      @uberlolzzz 4 роки тому +1

      @@williejohnson5172 This makes sense. In my AP chemistry class, it was difficult to understand certain topics, as expected, but I would always get through and score as one of the best in the class while only using the examples in the book and the internet for help. Every single time that I would try to listen to what the teacher was saying, I ALWAYS felt more confused by the end than when they began lecturing or got thrown in the wrong direction, which is very arguably worse. You can always teach yourself better than anyone else so take the resources you have and run with em. Good on you for telling your daughter that.

    Back in high school, I used to be a C student in math, but I end up failing precal in my senior year. Now I'm a first year mechanical engineering student and was supposed to take calc 1 in my first semester but I didn't score high enough on the math placement. I didn't really had the heart to do math during my time in grade school. So on my first semester, I had to take college algebra and at first, I felt like I was behind. But I believed classes in college was different than high school, so I decided to engage with it. When I took college algebra, pushed myself harder and better than I have before and at the end of the semester, I passed college algebra with a B and the class definitely prepared me for precalculus and so far I'm doing much better than I have before! I've been attending lectures, did all of my hw, went to tutoring, and asking questions to my professor and it made me realize how much it took to be good at math. I scored 94/100 on my lastest exam! So with all of that, I'll be expecting myself to pass the class strong and I'll be taking calc 1 in the summer. Wish me luck!

    Today marks a sad day for me, I failed in calculus. I wish I didn't neglect taking advantage of the opportunity in highschool. Why did I spend my summer wasting free time? when I could of learned calculus early in those years. I'm so upset I tried really hard to pass my calculus class. I guess I didn't have enough perserverance to learn all the tricks in the book(because there were many, many tricks) 😥 I literally spent so much of my time and told everyone I could do it but now I look like a clown. I can't take calculus again, I'm planning on picking up a trade now because I've been putting my studies as my main priority but I feel like this failure moves me 10 steps back towards my goal, and I NEED to start working towards a career. It's so upsetting that i let myself down i wish I could vent to someone but don't want anyone I know to see me like this.

    Maybe people fail Calculus because the teachers and tutors are not good at teaching it.
    Neuroscientist are working on how Calculus works in the brain. We are working on brain implants so that humans become better at logic and mathematical thinking. The only prerequisite is that the person knows how to add and multiply. More will be revealed in the next few years. We think that's a worthy problem to resolve or else Americans will loose the leading edge we know have in the sciences. Eventually we will not need the implants.
    The question ought not to be Why people are so bad at Calculus and science? The question is how can we teach Calculus more effectively? We really suck at teaching mathematics.

      Carlos Franco In my opinion, some context and history of math makes me more interested in the concepts. The memory of those concepts stick when I read it up. For example, like how logarithmic was created, and that it's just an inverse operation similar to multiplication and division. Knowing these terms, ideas, and cocepts abtractily really helps with both memorizing, solving, and understanding.
      A lot of people I've met don't know exactly what they're solving or what equations they're creating, but they know the patterns by memorization. I think that's not enough because there is no emphasis. You should be able to know how to teach it right after you've learned it and have full grasp of the concepts.

      I've seen this sort of thing before. Some students just have an easier time with some topics. Just like you said: Calc 3 is very visual/spacial. Those who are more inclined to that sort of learning will have an easier time with calc 3. Series/convergence tests have (almost) no visual aspect. I nearly failed Calculus I at my university, ending with a C which was hard on its own. In hindsight, my biggest flaw, was not preparing enough going in. I did good in math in high school, but this was the first math class that I had to put nose to the grindstone and constantly practice (unfortunately I only realized this with 6 weeks left). This is infuriating when having to balance work for other classes which is why I think so many students perform poorly. Personally, I think it's a combination of study habits and lack of good professors. Poor study habits that lack consistency are bound to lead to poor results and a bad professor that doesn't explain concepts well or emphasize why these concepts are important besides just being 'for the grade' is a factor too.

    I know this is an older video, but have you as a math tutor seen people in their late 20s and 30s be able to break into Calculus? I gave math a hard go 8 years ago, and maxed out at a C in pre-calc. Am I being realistic in saying I want to break into calculus after re-taking some courses, or would you say a math brain then isn't a math brain now?

    • @BriTheMathGuy
      @BriTheMathGuy  5 років тому +2

      I have personally worked with a fellow in his late thirty’s (early 40s) who started with early algebra, and continued through calculus 2 before I discontinued being his tutor. My best guess is that he continued on through calc 3/beyond and completed his engineering degree. I believe age is not a factor when it comes to learning math. I think anyone at (almost) any age can learn and complete calculus. (Especially with all of the free online resources available today) . It seems to me the factors that hold older individuals back are responsibilities of life (job, family, bills, etc.) rather than age. So if you have the ambition, time, and drive to learn, I say go for it! And best of luck!

    That's strange...I sucked horribly at math in high school (Took Algebra 1 twice...Didn't graduate either lol), but I excelled tremendously in college. The first time I took Calculus 1 in college I rarely struggled. Calculus 2 was a lot more interesting because of the various integration techniques, application methods , infinite series problems, and solving transcendental functions which, to me, was an exciting point in my time taking the course. Calculus 3 was by far the most difficult in the series (maybe because I was being evicted from my home at the time =p), but the concept of visualizing a 3-D conic model was difficult for me, but with practice it became simple. I had a blast with multiple integration though (I felt like a math rock star xD). I took Linear Algebra in the winter (5 week course....Homeless at the time...It sucked ). Anyways, You'll get a lot more in depth with solving linear & multidimensional matrices. Be prepared to understand Gaussian elimination as this will be used very often throughout the course. Diffy Q was by far the most simplest yet complex upper division math course I've ever taken, because it's literally straight forward, but complicated in its own way (It will make sense later on). With all honesty I struggled the most in determining the Laplace Transform of a given function (I have to say that this was the hidden needle under the bed that really kicked my ass, but just remember the elementary Laplace transform table and you'll be fine). Solving 1st, 2nd, and higher order differential equations was great as you'll be provided with many methods to solve them, such as the method of integration factor, undetermined coefficients, Applying the Wronskian etc...In any case, if I can do it, you guys can definitely do it too.
    PM me if you want the name of the books I used.
    I'm glad I'm done with math though. I can finally work purely on my Computer Science courses now =D

    The difficulty of most of my classes for my first 2 years of college felt comparable to honors/AP classes in high school, although the format and weighting factors in grades were very different. Comparing high school to college in that regard is kind of like comparing apples to oranges, but the substance taught seemed very similar.

    I'm taking calc 2 (integral calc) during this summer 5 weeks 1 exam every week covering 2 chapters. Class started with 40+ people, now we have 12.. first exam class average was a 30 and second was a 60. I got a A is calc 1 during fall semester but calc 2 is kicking my ass so hard. I study 5+ hours a day and I'm still struggling, maybe I need to take it during a full semester instead of 5 weeks semester. Any thoughts, exam tomorrow is over DE, sequences and parametric equations, I'm so stressed 😩

      Take a big breath. Your school wouldn't offer summer sessions if they weren't doable. Your success in calc 1 is a good indicator for success in calc 2. I'm confident if you took it in the full semester you would be totally fine. See how this exam goes and decide your chances for doing well this summer. There is no shame in dropping classes (I've done it) and you are not behind if you take it this Fall. Best of luck to you!

    Brian, very good video! I would like to add one more reason that people fail calculus. I learned this from personal experience. DO NOT TAKE COPIOUS NOTES. If you concentrate on writing down everything the professor writes down, you will not understand the notes you took when you get home. The reason is that most people cannot multitask well. It is important to understand what the professor is doing, rather than simply what he is writing down. I learned this in my sophomore year. I stopped taking so many notes, and simply listened to what the professor was teaching. My grades skyrocketed. This too, is why videos (I especially like Khan Academy) can be so helpful. You don't take notes while watching a video, do you? You can always replay it. Most of the things the professor writes on the board will be in your textbook anyway.

    • @BriTheMathGuy
      @BriTheMathGuy  7 років тому

      Thank you very much! I agree with what you are saying. Many students I work with bring me their notes with hopes of an explanation. Your notes are meant to be followed by none other than yourself! I had one professor in college who insisted you just watched the lecture without writing since he provided his own notes for you. That was a good experience. If I had it my way, all freshmen would take a "college success course" that would talk about things like this. Thanks for your comment!

    I took a technical preparatory year at my university here in Sweden, so under two semesters I studied Mathematics 3c and D (which are basically calculus, trigonometri, algebra and complex numbers). As well as Chemistry, Physics I and II. And my method of studying was basically being up to 2 or 3 AM completing assignments as well as using the internet as my main source of studying (watching YT videos and other online educational sites to learn each and every concept within math, physics or chemistry), the textbook we bought was "okay" but not too great, the explanations were very vague and dull. However I managed to get the highest possible grade within math just because of Khan Academy, BlackPenRedPen and all these other educational channels.
    My point is that just doodling, reading books relevant to what you study, thinking and having fun with the conceps you have to learn and imagining/visualizing the stuff you learn makes it A LOT easier and more fun, having those "Aha" moments were so satisfying that it's almost impossible to explain, just witnessing how the problems within physics just merges together and joins with what you previously have been taught in mathematics (which I thought were two completely different subjects) were great, and I truly agree with what Richard Feynman said: "I don't want to take this stuff seriously, I think we should just have fun", I think the strictness, all the "due to" dates concerning assignments etc is what makes people hate math so much for example, they never get to realize how beautiful, amazing and effective the scienes are but rather they think that it's all about memorizing formulas that you then have to spit out on the exam to then forget..

    At 3:00 he alluded to it. One major reason is that most teachers just suck. This is partly reflected in the teacher who expects a student to "just pick it up". Or they spew out some information and expect the student to organize it into an understandable form. They got their degree so now they can relax and collect the paycheck.

    What's the difference between differential equations and multivariable calculus ?

    • @BriTheMathGuy
      @BriTheMathGuy  7 років тому +1

      Differential equations are simply equations that have derivatives in them. There are many courses dedicated to finding the solutions and interpreting differential equations.
      Multivariable calculus is the study of calculus with many (more than 2) variables. Most intro multivariable calculus classes are spent doing calculus (limits, derivatives, integrals) in three dimensions (3-dimensional space like our real world).

That said, much of the fear of calculus could be alleviated by GOOD Teaching. I find that many math teachers have poor communication skills, or are not enthusiastic....I like to do calculus problems, but going to a calculus class is boring.....You do need a solid grounding in ALGEBRA. In high school, you must take algebra, trigonometry, functions and relations.....one final tip....use Schaum outline notes!

    I just finished Precalc II (mostly a trig), and I really don't need Calculus since I'm a drama major. I'm happy I finally passed with a B on my third try. However, my mother has told me that one reason why students fail calculus is because thet have a poor foundation in Algebra concepts. Hence, students may be good at the actual calculus but could easily make sign errors (not sin) or simple algebraic mistakes.
    Trig Identity proofs probably is the middle step between algebra and calculus. Elementary Algebra has Pemdas, but Gefdas is a little more accurate. Balancing trig identities, however, doesn't follow a linear method. Plus, you can start with either side. You can change everything in terms of sin and cos. But that may be counter intuitive since there may be a tan relationship, instead of a sin/cos relationship. You can square both sides even if there is no indication of squaring, you can do that. Here is the obvious: not all identity proofs are LHS or RHS, you can deal with the whole Kahuna Burger as long you deal with both sides.
    Parametric equations. It's like half algebra and half trig, meaning you sub one for the other in terms of T, or eliminating the parameter. And to do this, we go back to our identities, especially Sin^2theta + Cos^2theta=1. Hence, if you were given some trig equations with x, y, and T, , the trigonometric relationship is not always straight forward. However, if you know the pythagrean theorem relationship, you may figure out what the relationship is. It's not always pythagrean, but in Precalc, the parametric equations usually have that relationship. Even polars have this relationship, suchlike r=5. Well, bring out the old pythagrean relationship since you have r and r is related to x^2 + y^2 = r^2
    But you may say " this is a Calculus video not a trig video. What is the relationship you are making, Derek? This is totally off topic!" Not really.
    You see, although Algebra is a straightforward path, students who are on their way to study calculus may be introduced to non linear thinking through the use of Trigonometric instruction. Calculus may be a thousand times harder then trig; however, it kind of introduces students to use some sort of logic rather then having everything straight forward. However, trig is all about angles, but lots of its relationships can be related to the unit circle. The pythagrean identities may seem random at first but once you know to dicide by cos^2theta, sin^2 theta + cos^2 theta =1 becomes tan^2 theta +1 = sec^2 rheta. And once you divide this by tan^2theta theta, you get 1 + cot^2theta theta = csc^2theta. Guess what? Even polars are related to the cotton picking cartesian graph in a way. X is the cos axis and y is the sin axis. So we get the rectangular relationship x= rcos theta and y= rsin theta. Lovely!
    So even though I never took calculus and I probably won't take it, I can guess that using or coming up with some sort of logical reasoning, Suchlike you do in trig proofs, students can at least be introduced to a non-linear way if thinking, which is a skill needed for calculus.
    That brings me to point 2. Students lack trig knowledge. If you don't know your trig identities by the time you get to calc, I would guess you would do poorly since I have heard Calc 2 requires trig knowledge, especially your identities.
    So even though I will probably not take calc, I'm guessing students will probably fail calculus if they don't have a good algebra foundation and a good trig foundation.
    I think this is the most obvious reason students fail calculus.
    2nd reason people fail calculus: pride and refusal to ask for help.

    Retaking calc 2 - I have found that what is so hard is that you really need a good mental mathematical toolbox, as well as lots of experience dealing with problems & types of scenarios. In my case, I did not even get a good high school maths education, so I had to take precalc classes at college before even starting calculus. I'd think the maths issues with students probably start in or before high school. People may skate by in their precalc classes, then once they get to calculus & may not remember what cot(x) is (1/tan(x) or adj/opp.

      That is definitely part of it! Students need to remember what they learn throughout high school so they can use it in higher level classes. Thanks for the comment.

      I don't personally but I'm sure you can find many resources if you dig around online a little. Best of luck!

    I failed it because I took it online and it took forever for me to learn the basics, and by the time I had to learn that stuff that builds on the basics, it was too late. My teacher was an idiot too because she basically made an online class too similar to how she would teach it in class, and didn't give us any leeway considering it was online. She never let us even bring a flashcard or any formulas into the test. I don't think it was really, really hard, but I just didn't have enough time to pass each test which required me to learn a whole chapter in 3 weeks, so.

    For me the professor that I have doesn’t make the concepts any easier to understand basically restates the Calc book. (Civil Engineering Major in Calc 2)

    I always was good on algebra and trigonometry so calculus was easy for me. By the way good video.

    I maintained a 100% In my ap calculus ab class when I was 16. I think the key in succeeding in calculus is visualization and pattern recognition. For me, self-study and deriving, or at least taking time to understand, the formulas consolidated the concepts. I like calculus because after you learn it you see it everywhere (in terms of the concepts). I have to disagree on blaming it on the teachers. In order to succeed in math, or anything for that matter, you have to be interested in it; Interested in the pursuit of knowledge more than the acquisition of the grade. inherent to the interest in knowledge is your A. However, I have yet to take a college class so I can't speak on that. I will be taking linear algebra and multivariable calculus, along with organic chemistry and biochemistry this summer, so ill find out about the troubles of college classes.

      Most don't want to take the time to self-learn and actually understand the material. I commend you for doing so! Keep up the good work and best of luck in your future classes :)

    Here in england we learn calculus at a levels (high school junior/senior year) if you took maths. I never understood why in america people find it so hard, for us its just like another topic.. like an expansion of algebra.. i just can't understand why people find it so hard.

    When i was in college, i practice advanced math 1 & 2, for over than 9hrs per day until i passed this classes. We did differential equations of higher order in adv. math 2 and i've been in top of my class because of this. Good math understanding helped me a lot in my electronics class because of heavy use of integral equations in it and in various programming classes. I wanna tell todays kids who want to pursue carriere in electronics and/or programming this: Whomever tells that math isnt crucial in either of these fields is dead wrong, or at least is not serious programmer/electronics guy. And for the ladies this goes also and extra something: There is no cleaner job than being programmer or electronics expert. And you can always moonlight if you need additional money.

      +BriTheMathGuy How much more difficult is calc 1 than precalc? Ill be taking calc 1 as a summer course in a few weeks here, on a side note I took precalc here in college. Just curious Ive heard different things, thanks.

    • @BriTheMathGuy
      @BriTheMathGuy  8 років тому

      +Carlos Flores The answer is almost always: It depends. The difficulty you personally face will be based on how comfortable you are with precalc and the teaching style of your professor. Most consider calc 1 a big step up from precalc. (but don't worry!) Myself and many other youtubers are dedicated to helping you get through the class!

      +Rayan Shammaa If you have succeeded in calc 1 and 2 you can succeed in calc 3. 3 is more difficult but the key to doing well is solidifying and not forgetting what you have learned in past classes. I'll also have videos covering all topics in calc 3 in the coming weeks and months. So don't worry!
