Vlog #1 | How I Failed Calculus Twice and Still Became an Engineer

  • This is my academic story of how I got to my major, my PhD program, and all of the failures I went through to get here. For those of you struggling in school or not quite sure what to do with your careers, ask yourself what it is that makes you happy and what it is you want to achieve.
Asian Americans are stereotyped as achieving academic success and that failure is shameful. I have failed many times in my life and hopefully my story can help some of you overcome your personal failures and find the resilience to achieve your goals!
If you are someone who is afraid of what other people think of your career choices or failures, you are not alone!
Grades do not and should not determine your success in life!

Hi, I came across your channel for the first time and I really like your video. I feel like you are someone went through something similar to me and I look up to you.
I went to college for my first semester and my parents were unsupportive of my hard work always (because there were years where I was a great student and some years where I relaxed a bit or had a major stressor in my life), so they never trusted me and always put down my efforts, telling me that I couldn't do it. I kept trying nevertheless, and they planned events that wasted a lot of my study time in my first semester. I found it difficult to get back on track and eventually my effort started to wane as I gave in to their criticisms and the reality of my declining performance. I failed my first semester (fulltime) and I felt horrible. My family continued to go on about how I don't work hard enough when I put my all and did not get desired results (especially when they wasted my time). My second semester they attacked my confidence before the semester started and I kept trying, and it went the same way. The pandemic luckily saved me and I did not go college for a year, but I became a bum who looks back at my past. I have been trying my best to get back on track, and it seems to be working, but it is not enough. My family still thinks ill of me and my performance and confidence have declined significantly. As a fellow Asian, I hope you could advise someone in a worthless situation like me.

I am going to do it. Regardless if I pass or not bc if I did it was hella lucky. So do calculus 2 during your free time for fun. Even if you don’t find it fun. I am going to do calculus 1 for fun during summer and possibly take it again to get a better grade. All it takes is determination. Asian students want to meet good expectations in school or otherwise they would be labeled as the odd one out, while black students want to AVOID fulfilling BAD expectations in school or otherwise they would be labeled as just another bad stereotype. Both perspectives put enormous pressure on the student to do well.

Everyone was so disappointed at me especially my parents. I always recall that moment as the darkest part of my life. I didn’t give in tho. I guess I just didn’t like electrical engineering, so I moved to what I really love which is mechanical engineering. After that, I just didn’t want to fail anymore because I didn’t want to see my mother cry out of sheer disappointment. So I persevered and push myself to work diligently. Hi! idk if you'll ever see this, but I'm currently a BioE undergraduate. During my first year, I fell into academic probation. I eventually got out academic probation my second year. My third year, however, I fell under a 2.0 again, and got kicked out of school. I was devastated. Now, after taking some community college classes, I got readmitted. My parents don't know any of this, and I'm afraid to disappoint them :'(
The past few months have been difficult for me, because the friends I made in undergrad are now graduating, and I feel like a disappointment :( but your video made me feel like I'm not alone, so thank you for sharing about your struggle and showing another perspective :') I hope the best for you through your graduate school

First off, I applaud you for continuing school! It’s not easy to see others around you move on and to let people know your current situation. But I think that you should keep pushing forward and don’t give up. I read a quote recently by Jimmy O Yang which basically said, you can either disappoint people for a few years or you disappoint yourself for the rest of your life. Don’t worry about what others think. Move towards what you want.

    My major is maths.
I failed cal1 3 times and the fourth is coming in a week. I'm going to fail again.
And I don't know why this is happening to me.
    I didn't study at all.
I didn't study a thing for two years.
And now it's so hard for me to get back into maths.
I am in deep pain and I don't understand why others around me can't understand my pain. I need support, I am severely depressed and I can't continue. Seriously.

I once failed a core EE course twice, & it was a requirement to graduate. I failed it one semester & dropped it in another, it was too hard, I thought it was impossible, I wondered how other kids did it. Some were saying it was very hard, but there are those who say it was so easy like a piece of cake, I felt so low & ashamed. Surprisingly I was able to pass classes that depended on it very well. I put it on hold for a year and a half, then got my revenge in summer.

I was also that nerd in middle school. I still plan my life 15 years out to this day lol. I did very well until junior year. When I was scheduling my classes for my junior year, I was ill-advised to take Duel Enrollment Pre-Calc, as it wasn't the equivalent to honors that my councilor had made it out to me. The class load was far too much for a bearly above-average student-athlete, thus I got sucked into "School is more important than mental health" scam. I worked nearly 8 hours a day for that class alone at its peak, which unfortunately occurred right after my first love broke up with me. I didn't know it at the time but I now remember the moment my brain stopped producing serotonin. I ended up passing the class by 0.1%, but at the cost of my senior year, my freshman year, three jobs, and three relationships.
I struggled deeply with addiction and when I visited my family that summer, I couldn't remember their names or how I knew them. My parents didn't believe in mental illness before this, so they were completely naive.
Senior year, I was filling out my college application for my dream university, Auburn University. Auburn was my inspiration to work my way out of the prison of special-Ed, give up any opportunities for a social life, and do well in school. I had my first major anxiety attack, that was so bad that I ran away from my computer as if my life was in danger. I ran for an entire mile screaming at the top of my lungs. Not being athletic, my mom found me collapsed in a ditch conscious but unresponsive to her. A few days after, she bought me my first prescription of antidepressants. I had started the Rocky road of recovery.
This antidepressant seemed effective, but it slowly made my symptoms worse. My use of OTC pills got worse witch certainly interacted with my medication. This climaxed when my dad beat me for the first time and I ran away that night because I thought I could risk being capable of killing him. I wasn't home for 10 days and only returned because we were going to see family for Christmas. After we got back from vacation, my doctor prescribed me my first effective antidepressant. I stayed on that for 13 months. I was able to really start healing my grades, all of them were Fs. I managed to early scrape out straight C's my second semester because I had learned so little the first semester. Thus, ending the year with Ds and Cs.
News Flash: This disqualified me from attending Auburn University. I then found out we were moving to Fayetteville, Arkansas so I applied to the University of Arkansas and got in.
I wouldn't have graduated High school if I wasn't so far above a standard Diploma and if my teachers hadn't forged some of my grades (I had nothing to do with it. they simply felt bad that the system would prevent a honors-level student from graduating).
We moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas immediately after graduation and I thought if I took the summer off, I would have enough time to be mentally healthy by September. You guessed it! No f*kin way. I quickly relapsed and started failing again, but worse academically. My average grades were about 35%. I thought I could get it up to a C if I got clean again, but that didn't happen. By the time I realized that I had little chance of passing, there were no more tuition refunds for dropping out, so I decided that leaning 35% was better than learning 0%. I continued to study until the day before the last day to drop classes.
Since then I've struggled to keep a job but I have discovered that the medication I was taking was impacting my memory greatly, and have found a new medication that has brought me back to my former happy days.

Thank you for sharing your story! Sorry you had to deal with all that! 🥺Anxiety is a B*TCH. My sophomore year of college a little over a year ago my doctor prescribed me an antidepressant (after years of me telling her I was depressed) that was effective and it helped a lot but only lasted 4 months. I've since not seen her and haven't been on it. I get frequent panic attacks and relapses. Do you happen to remember the name of the medication so that I may talk to my doctor about it? this comment section is my safe space.

Thank you for this video. I really, really needed this today. I'm a mechanical engineering major, and I failed calc 1 once, I'm about to fail calc 2 for the second time, and I've just been feeling really low about it. But the part where you said the reason you want to be an engineer is to help people-- that really resonated with me. That's the main reason I want to do it. I want to see my designs help people, and improve their lives, and help the world in general. In all of the engineering classes, i make As. But for some reason, the calculus is really the sticking point. If i cant get through calc 2 the second time, i will probably pursue something engineering related but less demanding in terms of math. But again, thank you for this video, it really helped me. I feel motivated again.

Thank you so much for watching and I am happy that my experiences are able to help in some way. Engineering is merely a tool and having a strong mind and heart to wield that tool can lead to great things being built (cheesy I know lol). And engineering isn't as math heavy as you might think. You just need to get through a few more math classes and you'll likely never use calculus ever again. So just keep powering through and I know you will pass!

it was refreshing to watch this video and see someone else with the same struggles, but i’d like to also add a bit of my own perspective. i passed calc 1 with a A and no less than a 97% on any exam. i went into calc 2 two semesters later and scored a 51% on my first exam (albeit i did not study much). as a 4.0 student, i put immense pressure on myself to get 100% on every other exam in order to get an A, and put about 3 times more effort into my second exam, but still not enough. i scored a 51% on exam 2. the exact same score as before. i was defeated and stopped attending the class and decided to get an F, delay transferring by one year, and retake the class. i am currently in calc 2 again a year later, and although i understand the concepts and am putting in the work, i feel plagued by fear and anxiety. my emotions are a mess. in some ways, i don’t think retaking this class is worth the emotional distress, but i’m also worried that this perspective is short-sighted. i’m at the point where i’m going to take the first exam and see how it goes... and if it doesn’t go well, i’m going to give myself an out, which is changing my major. it’s funny because the idea of changing my major feels like lifting 100 pounds of bricks off my shoulders-because i’m not passionate about my major, and it is all just about ego. so my opinion is to analyze the situation carefully and put your emotional health above all else. if you are dreading a class this much... maybe it’s not worth it. but if you can get past this dread, i fully agree with the importance and working hard and overcoming failure.

hey, approach it with a lot of confidence, this is the most important thing to do, look at it as a baby course that you are going to crash away. Pay very close attention to the teacher explaining concepts, do all the homework, revise the quizes & even self practice, you will see it going well. That's what I did on y 3rd try of a course that at one time thought it was impossible, I wondered ho other kids were able to pass it.
For calc2, you really need to review your calc 1, specifically how to take derivatives and how to do integrals. Calc 2 builds on that calc 1, you just have to reduce a big calc 2 expression into a bunch of calc 1's. A simple u sbubsitiution give you a small expression called U, ti's easy to get it's integral and derivative like you did in calc 1, then the rest is just substitution back & following formulas

@@FullmetalScientist Hi Wilson. Here's an update. I'm currently finished with my sophomore first semester. During this semester I had to pick between Environmental Design, Policy and Planning and Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences major because I was undecided throughout my freshman year. I also had considered many other career choices but I've finally decided to declare ATM. Because I only decided to do ATM in the 3rd week of the semester, I switched almost every course on my schedule to ATM prerequisites. Then I made a Sheet document on what courses I need to take for my next 3 years of college. Because I was never prepared to take so many science courses at one take (I took a lot of non-STEM courses during my Freshman year), I ended up getting B-, C's, and D's this semester. I failed Calculus B (last chapters of Calc I and the first chapters of Calc II), failing Calculus the 2nd time, so I thought of you and returned to this video. If I want to continue to graduate, I need to take Calc B in Spring 2020, Calc C and Calc III in Summer 2020, and Calc IV in Fall 2020. So that's a lot of Calculus at the beginning of the 2020's. I need to step up my game from now and start prepping for these courses in Winter 2020. A lot of confidence was destroyed, but hopefully, that will change as we are entering a new decade. -2019-12-21

I found out that I'm not going to have to retake a class. My other 3 classes grades are C, C, B. I also think I'm on the verge of retaking another class. It really sucks because I'm striving to transfer to a state university and depression has messed up all my plans. On top of that, I have to pay for classes out of pocket next semester due to extra credits, so now i'm juggling with work and school. It really sucks :( I have reached out to my professors but some of them don't even give you a second chance. Well, I gotta keep my head up high and stick through it. I can't give up, not this far along in the game. Thank you for the story. Truly motivating.

It truly warms my heart to know that I am not the only one feeling like a failure on my final year of pharmacy school. I am literally going back and forth over if I am really competent to study therapeutics and experimental pharmacology even after getting accepted to top universities like UCL and KCL. I am currently scoring so horribly low on these subjects in my final year of undergraduate and I may possibly lose my rank among my class that I've worked for so hard. It breaks my heart to feel that all my undergraduate work is going down the drain infront of my eyes and I could have never imagined myself in the position I'm in right now.
I keep asking myself "what is this trying to teach me? "
I've come to the conclusion that I really never had any tangible academic experiences that involved failure. Although the courses I am taking now are tough and hard, but I feel that it is my fault I am not attaining the grades I want. I've studied nights, days and weeks and barley scored a passing grade.
Thank you for sharing this because I am learning that this is a station in our academic journeys that we must stop at and learn something out of. Grades aren't everything yesss, but that academic competent student inside of us fails to recognize it. Thank you. Sending greeting from Jordan 🇯🇴

I just ended up on academic suspension, which means I have to take continuing ed classes to get my GPA back up. My family calls me a failure on the daily, but I refuse to give up. I’m glad I fucked up, because I learned exactly what not to do in the process. It’s a minor bump in the road in my opinion. I will do everything it takes to achieve my dreams.

I'm in my 4th year of telecommunications engineering and i have already had to extend a year after failing most of my classes in yr 2, meaning i have to go for 5 years instead of 4. With this pandemic, there was no exams and i had to do extensive assignments and write programs within a few days. I think i might fail again but idk what to do. My professors aren't lenient either and i'm suffering from depression too. This is so hard but hearing you talk about this gave me hope that maybe i should not quit and persevere till the end.

I got a BSEE, I was mainly around microwave but brushed into communications a little bit. Honestly, I thought communications is the hardest major possible, I don't see anything harder than what you are doing...

I really needed this. I hadn't failed a class before until this last semester, and it hit me pretty hard. I studied as hard as I could towards the end of my Calculus class, foregoing preparation for the finals of my other classes in favor of that small chance that I could pass Calculus, and as a result I ended up failing my computer science class despite thinking that I knew the material well enough. I was already contending with this mindset of being "pathetic" or a "failure" (which I never had until college), and it felt like failing two classes in one go solidified that idea in my head, but I'm starting to see now that thinking that way is disrespectful not only to myself, but also those around me who also failed much in the same way and yet still succeeded in the end. I hope that one day, I can make a video similar to this in the hopes that I can also reach another person who's dealing with the same bs. Thank you!

This is a really inspiring video. Thank you for sharing your story! I'm currently on my path to becoming a marine engineer and I have similar reasons as to why. I want to help people and contribute to the industry. I'm not the best at math, but I'm willing to put in the work it takes to become what I want to be and be better than who I was the year before. For me, a lot of this is about growth and accomplishing something I never thought I could become. As an Indigenous person, we're put at a disadvantage because our schools are not as well funded, and therefore don't learn the essentials we need in order to succeed in post-secondary.
I failed two courses (that's half my classes) in my first year, second semester. I was reduced to 1.23 GPA and I nearly lost my school funding. My GPA is 2.92 now after less than a year but it was tough ass work haha. I only want to grow from here.

Found my way here. I really need motivation right now. I just failed Differential Calculus this first sem, and as freshman in Electrical Engineering, it's driving me crazy like I feel a lot of pressure because of my grade. All of my grades in each courses/subjects were high or like on the range of 1.5 - 1.9. Really a satisfaction for me but dcalc is literally ruining my mood. This subject really got the best of me. I'm kinda discouraged by the results. But I have no choice rn. The only choices left for me is to either retake the subject or shift program. I need an advice. Being a freshman, I get easily disheartened whenever i get a failing result. I'm not used to failing, but here I am.🤣

    • @iknowyoucanhearme6483
      @iknowyoucanhearme6483 5 років тому +5

Currently dealing with my pride/ego thing. I don't wanna shift because it hurts my feelings that my friends are doing well at their chosen program, why can't I. I don't wanna let them know that I'm struggling and failing, I wanna have ppsitive results. This pride issue is legit childish but it is what it is. Literally me, enduring calculus and crying alone because I have this pride in me that I chose this program, so I have to finish this no matter what it takes. I pity myself for failing like wtf I can't help it.

Thanks for sharing your struggle. I was right there where you were and not used to failing my subjects as a freshman. I know it can be difficult, especially if you are used to achieving high marks in high school. But what I learned was to always seek help when you need it. Go talk to your teachers or work with other students in groups to pass your classes. Also never give up! It's fine if you end up switching fields but only do it if you want to and not because you have to. Do your best and stay determined even if there are setbacks. Let me know if you want additional advice and I will do my best to help!

Thank you for sharing your journey and for inspiring me to continue going through the struggle to pursue a vision greater than myself. I want to help people as well and, similar to your situation with your academic advisor, mine suggested that I switch from Computer Science to an “easier” major. But I love my major and refuse to listen to her because I enjoy math and science and will pursue them no matter what - even if my grades are a joke right now, I am failing Calc AGAIN and might have to switch my major. When you began discussing comparing yourself to your peers and not feeling as smart as them with their 3.5 GPA’s, that really hit home for me. It’s crazy how we think that we are the only ones experiencing something when hundreds of others are feeling the same way.
However, despite the hardships I know that I can successfully earn my degree and, like you, go for my Masters. The struggle is real out here and I really do appreciate your honesty and openness to sharing your life obstacles. Thank you x100 for this video. I really needed this today. Thanks for sharing your experience, but My pride still wont allow me to change my major despite my struggles. I currently take the bare minimum 12 credits per semester and still struggle. I find that the more I struggle, the more it becomes a norm. This also means being happy with a C in a course because you really did put in the long nights and sacrifice all personal life for it. Maybe its just me, but thats how bad I want it. Not the healthiest of lifestyles but I just dont see another way

    • @FullmetalScientist

I completely understand the pride issue since I was the same way. I accepted getting less than stellar grades since I refused to leave engineering even when there were warning signs I probably didn't belong.
