The albatross is a central "character" in Samuel Taylor Coleridge's epic poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner".
Coleridge is one of the OG Romantic Poets that she's talked about in her songs for many years now (esp in The Lakes from Folklore). The group includes poets like Keats, Shelley, Wordsworth, etc., and they were very into tragedy, beauty, tortured love, death, nature, destiny (doomed or serendipitous), gothic imagery, yearning, etc.
In the poem, the albatross goes from being a good omen for sailors to being considered a bad omen to this specific group of sailors according to the hardship they endure.
We essentially realise in the end that she is just a bird who came to them in their hour of need and that all the positive and negative things they called her were part of their own projections and weakness.
She was just an ordinary animal.
Taylor uses this as a metaphor for how the media is always trying to paint her in relationships. A menacing destroyer of ken, or an angel come to save them.
I think she's trying to tell people that she's just a human being looking for love and everyone else's speculations about her are their own issues with themselves. Not a reflection of truth about her.

I disagree. She is the albatross. She is identifying with the albatross.
The Albatross is a giant sea bird, and in mythology, she goes from being a saviour in some cultures to being a bad omen in others.
I think she is trying to say that all of those myths are just human projections onto an innocent animal that just wants to live and love.

Definitely in the poem though, the albatross does become the cross to bear of one of the Ancient Mariner... But that's because he is cursed because he killed her and she was innocent the whole time 😢
