@@GreyManPrepping me to lol I even "considered" getting rid of my crafting supplies to make room. I may end up moving some of it to the garage. I just think if the grid goes down it could come in handy.
We started with plastic and they bowed on us. Moved on to metal and then when we moved we built shelves in a small closet. I think because I home can there's added weight from the jars. I write Best By Date on each cans. We also store in 5 gallon buckets in other areas on the house. Stacking to the rafters. Thanks Grey for sharing your setup. Pray, Plan, Prep
For my 5'x5' pantry I went with (2) 1x3" red oak strips on right and left walls into studs using 3.5in deck screws (overbuilding) then 1x3 strips on those at different levels to hold 1" red oak planks across. The shelves are 22" deep. Standard cans go 3 high and 7 stacks per row. In the corner I used 1x2 oak strips to build a 7 shelf tower 13"x15" . Of the 5x5 pantry floor I have about 3 Sq. Ft. Total standing space. Oak was $1,200.
We have plastic shelves that we have had for 10+ years . They are still fine. I believe weight limit is 275 PER SHELF. We also have 2 of the Trinity NSF ( commercial approved) shelving that Costco sells. 1000 pounds per shelf when you DO NOT use the wheels. We do not have wheels on and use for canned goods and my home canning.
Step by step inch by inch slowly you stack I'm sure you know where that came from. Good job Gray. Now just don't tell anybody where you live. Nobody knows what or if I've even got anything. It's yours you do it like you want to I would never try to tell you how to do something. Thanks for the video makes a lot of sense. Stay vigilant my friend!
So glad to see you back online! Love the pantry video. I saw a cool idea you might like. All that dead space in front of your shelves might allow you to do similar. Stack buckets 2 high in front of the shelves and cover with a table top. Then move any food that is nearing expiration onto the table so that it gets used 1st. Also you can take a quick look at what’s on the table to make shopping lists for replacements. If you have extra room it’s a great place to set stuff down while you organize and refill too. Cool way to make the most of space in center of room and helps keep your FIFO flowing more smoothly.
I don’t personally use the can roller baskets. Not practical if you keep more than a flat of a certain kind. When money is tight like for us, i use less money on baskets and racks to free up more money for actual canned goods.
In my main storage I use flats of cans as well. Super easy to stack, but here in the home I wanted to try these out due to my daughter always getting into the food pantry 😆 and I want her to understand the FIFO process if that makes sense
Looks good. I have new plastic shelves from Job Lot, old wooden shelves (repurposed book cases) and an old metal shelf. They don't match but they are holding.
I double stack the cans, and use clothes line tying them horizontally across the shelves to block the cans from sliding off and smashing your toes. Also with basement with uneven floor, I had to screw the back of the shelves to the wall and raise the two front legs of the shelves to reduce the risk of it falling over
I have those same shelves. I like how easy and quick they are to put up. I use storage cubes on some. They do bend so weren't quite as sturdy as I thought even though I distributed weight evenly and not at max. One good idea for cans is real plastic milk crates- they hold 32 standard cans each perfectly with space on top to spare. They're very sturdy, compact, stackable, and there's no wasted space. Of course, you don't have the advantage of taking from the front first, and you might have to rearrange your stack to get some things. But they're great for small spaces.
@GreyManPrepping Forgot to tell you that from MY experiences, I suggest putting a sturdy base UNDER ANY type of system you use. Helps avoid wear and tear on whatever flooring you have if in the home. If on cement, I still will use a wood base under shelves. As for the can rotating thingy's... Me no likey! Tried a bunch and they take up too much shelf space for me.
Agreed, but for this purpose of teaching my daughter the FIFO rule I wanted to give her an easy way to stock the pantry and not mix up my dates. I have a lot more to go to get this pantry in order but eventually it'll come together. At the moment I am not putting anything down for the floor due to the shelves getting changed out here over the next month or so for my metal shelving. We usually use MDF or plywood sheets whichever happens to be cheaper at the time lol
@@GreyManPrepping EXACTLY what I use! I am ready to get the 2nd monster shelves up so I can move "some goods" for my hydroponic growing systems. I'll have them ALL going for sure. 15 ish I think 🤔
On the top caps, I use the paint can hook holders for ladders to hang stuff like packages of lighters and such that have a slot hole in the top of the package. It’s out of my way and I can still utilize the space. Then there are “S” hooks that we use for hanging on the ends that are not in the “walkway”.
OH Golly, I forgot S hooks. Have no idea how. Hubby has S hooks in all font sizes. 🤣Every shape every size there is an S hook everywhere. He will even fashion one out of a scrap piece of wire. Sssssseriously we need an intervention. ~ Great addition to the convo Mike and Jenn.
I use both wire and plastic. I prefer wire with a shelf liner. My only complaint with plastic is the grate spacing. I fixed this with some thin plywood or thick cardboard as a liner. Keeps the small cans from tipping over when you stack them
Nice start man, I have a mix of shelves. The plastic work great for box food that we go through quickly. I even have one screwed to the wall to add stability. I think it great to move your pantry around once a year or so. It let's you know what works and to get a better inventory. I look forward to seeing it when it's done. 👍❤️🇺🇸
Yeah we have a dozen or so boxes to still unpack, one is filled with hour teas as well as our herbal dried flowers we use for tea to. I have an oversized plastic tote filled with my coffee as well 😂☕

@@GreyManPrepping thats why I haven't put anything out there. Not risking it. So for now it's in different locations in my house. I do have water in the garage I think it would be ok if I filter or boil. I could even use it to flush toliets we are on a septic system.
I love your take on this. I keep saying to do what you can, with what you have, where you are now. I’ve been repurposing and recycling things at home all year and it saved me money & put me in a better position now than I was earlier in the year.
Great video Grey. I have metal shelves from Lowes in basement. Their holding up fine. But I’d love those you have for my spare bedroom. Easy to put together. I needed brother in Laws help fit the basement. One thing would be nice and I wish I should of done……set the shelves away from the wall so I can load up from the back. It’s easier to put away cans and jars without having to reach back and pull forward to rotate. You’ll never need to worry if the front cans have been rotated. I’m going to do that upstairs on my shelves when I get them. Nice work 👍♥️
Thanks Cbass, I built these big hearty shelves at my pops's house it was not fun, but they'll hold 500lbs a shelf. These were definitely very easy to put together and move around. They'll serve their purpose lol 😆

Look forward to more videos on the pantry build. Have a great week!
Thank you, yeah we were in the same situation and that's why we decided to use the spare room to expand our options. Thank you for taking the time to watch the video 😁🙏
Great job on the shelves. I started with these as well with most of my goods still on these shelves. But I must say I love the wooden 2x4 shelf my hubby built for the store bought canned food which holds over 600 cans.
Thank you and that is awesome. In my father's house where I store additional supplies as well We built some heavy duty wood shelves down in the storage room.
I bought shelves from lowes that look exactly like the ones you have, they are rated 200lbs per shelf. So far they work great. Mine has adjustable feet at the bottom which is great because I can put them closer to the wall and adjust them for the carpet tack straps. In the corner where the 2 different shelves meet I would store things like your survival buckets that you won't be accessing often. I also would put all your long term storage items all together on shelves next to each other and then all your working pantry stuff together. Looks like you're making good progress Grey. I'm behind on videos, sorry it took awhile to get to this one. Take care, God Bless.
Hey Tina 😁👋 You have some great tips, thank you. No need to apologize life is busy lol, the videos will be here for when you have time 😁👍 Stay safe and God bless 🙏
Nothing wrong with the plastic shelves! I have homemade shelves, plastic shelves & metal ones to. You use what you need to. Now far as weight goes, most of my supply is home canned food from the garden & good meat sales. This means A lot of mason jars which are heavy for their size. You have to watch how many you add to the shelves & how many you store in a room, if you have wood structured floors...
Great point and thanks for sharing your thoughts. We are planning on canning this year if all goes well and I can only imagine the added weight of all the glass jars, I would definitely choose a much more robust shelving option then these plastic ones.
@GreyManPrepping I have used all the kinds of shelves. I'm Sooooo tired of moving everything around but 💯 agree... it is a step by step process every dang day! I'm buns deep in it all for 2 months. Oh... rubber mallet... yupper use for all shelves except with the huge metal wood shelves that try to kill me every time I have to deal with them 😅
Heaviest on bottom, lighter going up, I think it's the middle finger measures about an inch and you can cut an inch wood support and place it midway..it added over a decade to the plastic shelves used for art supplies.
Another viewer said he uses 2 1x2 wood post and they work very well. Definitely will add them. Thank you for sharing your perspective and experiences 😁👍
I would not want the corners shelf set up like that. When all shelves are full it will get really hard to get the things out of that corner. You could pull shelves apart and keep corner open, then stack 5 gallon buckets there.
Yeah that was my fault in my measurements, due to the door that opens into the room. I figured in the mean time I can put things that aren't used very often in that area for know. because on the other side of the back wall shelves I am adding a water storage section and can't move them over.
I have used the same shelves for about 4 years now. They have worked great for me. I also bracket the shelves against the wall to help make sure they don't tip over for any reason.
@@GreyManPrepping Np. I only did it because when I first started the shelves I didn't have much in the back of them so all the weight was towards the front. I do have that slight bowing in the middle like you do. However they are still going strong. I notice squared peg holes in the middle that could be used to insert poles to reinforce the shelves. I have not seen any for sale. But the shelves themselves have still seemed to stand the weight. Granted, I don't try to stress test them. lol
Hi, Grey.👋👋😀 Great to see you after so long. We have those same shelving units but in the beige. They've been up for about 10 years and one unit is just now starting to lean, probably because it has too much weight on it.😬 Need to unload and reorganize it.
Always good to hear from you JT, I have the bigger version in grey as well in the garage with a ton of my canning supplies on it and it's quite sturdy. I have had it only 3 years now, so far so good.
I initially used plastic shelves until one totally collapsed. I then got 2 bigger metal and wood shelves for the heavy stuff and I put lighter stuff on the plastic shelves. There are 9 assorted shelves in my little room, I live in an apartment. Two more metal shelves need to be put together to put in my bedroom.
Yeah I am very careful about my weight distribution I have had some disasters myself in the past even with my wooden shelves that bowed from the weight. Sounds like you have an awesome pantry room Kathy! 😁
Ok, last thing, LOLOL @GreyManPrepping Do you avoid putting shelves and/or certain types of preps away from any outward walls?? (i.e - I use interior walls only for temperature control and not having heat/cold effecting my investments)
@@GreyManPrepping perfect! Luckily I have allot of interior walls available. Maybe need a bigger place - HA!! 1750 Sq ft is enough butt kicking so far.
Hey there Greyman, love the post. I use simular storage shelves but would prefer the metal restaurant shelves as they are longer and narrower. Tapping with the mallet does ensure a flush setting and you will ensure a even distribution of the weight. Can you link where you got those can racks?
Hey Michael 😁👋 Yeah they'll do the job for now until I get my metal shelves. I'll give you the link for the cans here. Thanks for watching brother 🙏 amzn.to/3OSG8Na

Great idea 💡 Thank you 🙏
@@GreyManPrepping Np. Granted, I don't try to stress test them. lol
@@Oakleyde I was looking at cutting some custom 1×'1s to fit. I figured 2 of those should be more than enough per shelf
@@GreyManPrepping I was thinking about doing the same. Doing so will increase the shelves lifespan
@@Oakleyde Agreed 👍
Great to see you again...blessings brother
Blessings to you as well 🙏
Hi, Grey.👋👋😀 Great to see you after so long.
I have had it only 3 years now, so far so good.
you need some more COFFEE
Oh I do lol I have 12 more boxes to unpack. Coffee is my life blood 😂☕
I’ve got the plastic shelves and they are holding up EXCEPT the middle is sagging! I prefer metal.
Yo can add a piece of wood in the center for added support if needed, I do have metal ones coming here in a few months. 😁
Nice job and results brother
Thank you BaBa 😁
Awesome video and i have learned a few things and seeing visuals also gave me some ideas too
Great to hear & thank you for taking the time to watch my video. 🙏
@@GreyManPrepping i dont know about others but i learn more with visual walk throughs. And thank you for posting
@@White__Hammer I'm a visual learner myself, and My pleasure. 👍
Those aren't shelves, they are bunk beds.
😂😂
I raise Greyman a 🤣 I give another 🤣. THANK WAS A GOOD ONE JEFF! Gonna need to use that FIRST in FIRST out method when the fam comes to stay.
Ok, last thing, LOLOL @GreyManPrepping Do you avoid putting shelves and/or certain types of preps away from any outward walls?? (i.e - I use interior walls only for temperature control and not having heat/cold effecting my investments)
Yes, On my exterior walls I usually shelve things like canning supplies or other random preps outside of food.
@@GreyManPrepping perfect! Luckily I have allot of interior walls available. Maybe need a bigger place - HA!! 1750 Sq ft is enough butt kicking so far.
How do
Hello Meri!
Thanks for watching brother 🙏

@@GreyManPrepping Thanks, been looking for some of these and was afraid of pulling the trigger on the ones I was looking at. They just seemed flimsy, but Ill take a look at these.
@@michael_mc_gowan My pleasure 😁👍
Where did you get the can holders from? I need that organization!
I personally love them 😁 I'll leave a link for them here. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. 👍

I have plastic shelves that I hate they’re not flat jars& cans don’t sit right without cardboard or wood in them. I have different types of shelves that I have had for years . I watch edible acres where he build for cheap in the basement a pantry/ cellar which I hope to do. I don’t feel my basement is ideal for coffee, teas anything boxed other than my can goods .
Hey Sharon, I so wish I lived in an area where we had a basement. In Michigan, we had a huge finished basement growing up, I can only imagine what I could do with that now
@@GreyManPrepping I live in Michigan but I can no longer do the things I used to. And I’m so frustrated that know one wants to do anything. I’m about ready to call it quits and sell everything and just leave
@@sharonsopczynski1192 That's a shame, folks should be helping one another. Are you talking about leaving Michigan?
@@GreyManPrepping yes I would
@@sharonsopczynski1192 Oh ok. I love the nature in Michigan, but not the current political environment compared to Florida. Well blessing to whatever your future holds 🙏
Looking great!!
Hey Willow GTSY and thank you!
@@GreyManPrepping I can't wait to see more. Are we gonna have a way for all of us to get together in chat somehow again?
@@WillowofMoonHaven I'm kicking around some ideas 💡 😁
