    In the pantry I have a notebook. When anyone removes an item (food, hygiene items, cleaning item, first aid item, pack of batteries, anything really) they write it on the list. That's my shopping list. I purchase 2 for every one item taken. Items we use more of stock up more quickly than those we use less often, so our inventory stays balanced. And I never have to make a list!

      I love to buy the rotisserie chickens at kroger when they are 2/$10. I pull off enough meat for a quick meal that evening, can the rest of the meat after slow simmering the whole chickens in a large stock pot. The flavor is amazing and there is so much chicken that just falls off for easy canning. I can the meat in the broth and then can some of the broth on its own.

    Thanks Grey. I remember when the Watkins man went door to door. He would come by about once a month. My family always bought the double strength vanilla and a few other flavorings. My kroger's has quit carrying the California Ranch that says 100% so I have to get the global blend. Ingredient list says extra virgin olive oil only ... but who knows. It still tastes better than any other olive oil. They do list the countries that produce the olives. Much Love

    Do the gamma lids protect against everything? Moisture?

    • @GreyManPrepping
      @GreyManPrepping  2 роки тому +2

      I like Gamma lids for a couple of reasons one is that they provide airtight storage containers with easy access and they are fairly leak proof. Nothing is perfect per say. hopefully that gives you an idea why I prefer them. Oh I forgot to mention this is in addition to the mylar and o2 absorbers. they come in real handy when you decide to open one of your preps and use it. they are a lot more accessible than having to pull off the lid each time you want to take a scoop of rice or beans etc.. then you can fasten it back on with a nice air tight seal

Thats important even though prices vary by Area. It will help give people an idea of cost if they are new to prepping. I watched a video from pin ball this morning. We use a marker to put best buy dates or exp. dates on our items because our eyesight is not as good as it used to be and the writing is easily seen. Came in handy when the grandkids decided to play store using our second pantry and were nice enough to put everything back, unfortunately, they removed some of the items from the "back" of the shelves (shelves set up like a library where he pack from the back and take from the front).

    Hey GreyMan, good video. I'm glad I saw this. I'm a single lady and it's not always feasible for me to buy large cans or packages of things and I like seeing someone else thinks along the same lines, your peaches example was great. It might be cheaper in the long run to buy the large cans but like you said once open and you can't eat them all, it's a waste. I do have a question about those Knorr side dishes and the small packages of mashed potatoes, Mac and cheese etc. I've seen numerous ways people have stored them, such as packing them in a bucket and oxygen absorbers thrown in and closed. I've seen someone do the same thing, only put in mylar bags, add O2 absorbers and then close the bucket. Others, slice open the bag and add an O2 absorbers, tape it closed and then thrown in the bucket. Some of these seem excessive but maybe not if it's the best way to do it. Oh yeah, Mac and cheese, I saw someone empty the box into a vacuum seal bag and sealed that way with instructions either written on the bag or cut off the box and put on the container some how. I just wanted to get your input. 😊 Thank you

      Hey Sue, well I should've clarified on the freezing. Sometimes I get to rambling. I may just do a video on the process of storing rice. I was having a hard time stocking with food from the store and doing the eat what you buy and store what you eat. Freeze dried food well be easy to cook if the power went out and it’s a ready meal. I’m not doing dry beans because dry beans take to much water and to much time and power to cook. I’m doing rice in hopes my soler generator we’ll power my rice cooker also rice takes little water the issue is cooking it with out power. Wait for Eastridge Food store a lot of ingredients it’s ready to go.the issue is the amount of time it takes to get to me and the cost. I’m still doing food from the store just the best before date has to be over 3 to 4 years.

    Olive oil - there is a major misconception about this oil, because people think it's not healthy due to "low smoke point". Smoke point do not dictate how well a type of oil resists oxidation. Real EVOO in studies is considered good enough for frying. It resists oxidation well because it has high amount of polyphenols, squalene, and some vitamin E. In a study*, EVOO oxidizes a bit more than coconut oil in frying, but produces less toxic compounds (aldehydes). Both EVOO and coconut oil are superior to avocado oil in resisting oxidation and producing less toxins in frying.
    High quality olive oil will have a pack date or harvest date in the back of the bottle. This is rough the time the olives are harvested and made in to oil. You will find it more commonly on PDO olive oil bottles. This is not the best by date.
    Coconut oil - it's very healthy, but I don't like the overpowering taste, so I don't cook with it, but it have practical uses. I mainly use it for mustache shaving, as hair gel, and on dry skin. Worse case scenario, it's one of the main ingredient in making homemade toothpaste.
    Bone broth - if you have access to bones, use a Instant Pot and slow cook the bone to make broth. I don't make it complicated, just bones, apple cider vinegar, and salt.
    Fishes - Alaskan wild caught is probably among the cleanest fishes you can buy. Sea food industry is the food category with the most frauds, so lots of false labeling, "transhipment" (originated in china but shipped to another country to change the country of origin), and species substitution. I will never buy "norwegian wild caught" or any shrimps from southeast asia. And yeah, Aldi have the cheapest canned salmon.

    If, you stock seeds you don't have to stock canned veggies as much. Get a canner or pressure cooker to can your veggies. That will give you more room for canned meats and other preps

      I guess that will have to be another video here down the road, my seed vault. 2022 Will be seeing Grey can & dehydrate foods as well. I have my presto 23 qt now as well as a good dehydrator and I agree it will definitely free up room.

      Seeds ate GOLD but when you live in a climate that isn't garden friendly year round is tough. Mitten is not a year round area to grow, however, I do hydroponic systems laye fall thru our spring. It helps some, but not as much as we'd like.

      Could you, also, show the different methods you use depending on the time of year and Status of the Grid. Example: I use my gas stove with my Pesto Pressure Canner, but if the Grid goes down what can I use & how do I use an alternate fuel source? What equipment will I need?

    I prefer freeze dried coffee for long term. Lasts a long time.
