My first time in London - awe and amazement of a German solo womantraveller visiting this city i.GB

  • This really is the first time, that I am visiting #london . Even though I have been teaching Shakespeare and British history for years, I never got to #travel to this buzzing English capital, before. I wasn't expecting to be so #overwhelmed by the amazing #historicsites like the #toweroflondon the #londonbridge #westminsterabbey and the #bigben .
Come with me, a #solowomantraveler from Germany, and #enjoy a #boattrip on the #riverthames, seeing and feeling all these amazing sights... I know, I only dipped my toe into London waters during this #daytrip and thus I will surely come back.
Sorry, thanks to some viewers, I found out that the beautiful building next to the Big Ben is the House of Parliament and not Westminster Abbey... sorry for the mistake 🙂 And also, it is the biggest clock within the clock tower that is called Big Ben. The Tower itself is called Elisabeth tower. 😀
Thanks a lot to the wonderful musician and friend Des Copeland for the music:

Notting Hill good choice. Bit pricey, but near to many of the sights and has many locals living there. Pop into the V&A (fashion) or Natural History museum if you have time. Both are free. Very walkable, car not needed.

If possible when visiting London please take a Black Cab if you need a taxi … instead of calling a Uber … Because Black Cab taxi drivers have to pass an exam called the Knowledge … this means that they know London city centre streets like the back of their hands … Uber drivers usually don’t have a clue about where they are going ….

I loved teaching and even now, 4 years after an unexpected burnout which lead me into early pension and travelling, I am still in touch with some and call them my friends ( They were adults learning to become preschool teachers and educators since I was teaching at a vocational school). Des Copeland, the musician whose music I have used for this video is one of them. Thank you for your lovely comment. May I ask in which country you have been teaching? England?

The Churchill Arms pub is near Notting Hill. It's famous for its hanging flowers outside in summer, and Christmas lights around Christmas. Worth going past even if you don't go in. 😊

I used to work in Holborn and remember the high wooden tables to stand at in the pub, each with their own coal fire, it was like going back to Victorian times.
I hope the German lady goes to Greenwich by boat and visits the old maritime museum.
Or the opposite direction to Hampton Court by boat, which is how Henry VIII often arrived.
Richmond Park is near, and if you walk along the Thames towards Teddington Lock, you will see boats entering the Lock and being lifted by tons of water to the higher part of the river. Its wonderful Victorian engineering. And there's pubs, restaurants and nice architecture along the way.

The John Soane has already been recommended which is a fascinating place. The other lesser known one is the Wallace Collection in an old mansion, well worth a visit next Spring if you can. Then there are the well known world class ones such as the British Museum, Tate and Tate Modern, The Natural History and Science Museum, The National Gallery and next door the newly refurbished National Portrait Gallery with all the famous people from these Islands. My personal favourite is the V&A Museum which I think is one of the best in the world. The great thing which I think is unique for a major capital city is these are totally FREE of charge to enter and each is completely different but fascinating in their own way. As I am sure you know they will require at least a day each to do them justice, so will probsbly need multiple trips to the city, but always an excuse to return!!

Jennifer, what a LOVELY video! Someone has already pointed out that your labelling of Westminster Abbey is actually the 'Palace of Westminster' AKA 'The Houses of Parliament'. The Abbey church is set further back from the river and is shown in some of your shots. Also, you might find it interesting to know that although everyone calls the clock tower "Big Ben" .... the tower's name is actually 'The Elizabeth Tower' ..... it is the main 'bell' inside it (that chimes the hours) that is called 'Big Ben' . The tower was renamed 'The Elizabeth Tower' for the Queen's Golden Jubilee (I think!). Before that I think it was just called the 'Clock Tower'. I look forward to seeing more of your videos!

Jennifer is a wonderful example of how having even a little understanding of history brings such emotion when you visit historical places. It is a physical connection to those long-dead souls we have 'met' through the books we have read. Without that knowledge of the people of the past, a visit to a place like London would be little more than 'Oh, another old building - yawn'. This video shows the power of history in education in bringing joy and nourishment to our lives. (It also helps that Jennifer is such a kind and thankful person :-)

Two interesting facts about the Houses of Parliament. Firstly, it is actually a Royal Palace (the Palace of Westminster) so any member of the royal family has the right to live there if they so choose. Secondly, if you are inside the palace you can tell who has jurisdiction of the area you are in by the colour of the leather used on seats/benches in corridors, meeting rooms etc. If the leather is green then the area comes under the jurisdiction of the House of Commons. If the leather is red then the area comes under the jurisdiction of the House of Lords.

    Hi Jenny,
So happy you enjoyed your trip to London, there is so much history in London.
The tower as seen so much fun and games, but I suppose not for the occupants who frequented it. 😱
I also love being on the water as you say it’s so relaxing and you have time to take in a
    the exquisite scenery.
You did really seem in awe of the sights around you, it is a great place for tourists to visit.
But not so much when you go down for work, I was taken for a lovely lunch in the Shard when I was down on business there. The views are amazing. Glad I was not paying the bill. Lol
Hope you get back to see the other sights you have missed next year.
London gets the most money spent on it, so it does get a bit of resentment from people who live in the north. You may have heard of the north south divide..
As I’ve said my hubby did like to sit in Covent Garden’s weather permitting for his lunch, he lived just outside of London and commuted in every day. ( which he hated) as the underground trains where always jammed packed.
Hope you are enjoying your house sit with your furry friend.

@@jenniferk6632 Ok, I would go to Kew Gardens, The British Museum ,The National Gallery, Madam Tussauds, Westminster Abbey, St Pauls Cathedral, Hampton Court palace, Buckingham Palace, The London Dungeon, there is a restaurant at the top of The Shard worth going to even just for the views at night, Soho (great restaurants around there), Borough Market, Kensington Palace, London Zoo, Hyde Park, Richmond Park (the amount of deer is crazy lol), Victoria and Albert museum, Science museum, Natural history museum, Tower of London, Greenwich Observatory. That is all I can think of for now but there is more. You could spend all day in some of these places (especially The British Museum) and I think most a free to enter and some have a tour guide. Take care.

It is really, I live outside it in Wiltshire in the West Country so near to where you visited in Somerset and Dorset, but visit often. I think someone said it is because it gets so much focus, as it is the political, financial, media, and many other sectors centre, and so the lack of balance means elsewhere struggles to get coverage and this causes a bit of resentment.
