Wow! You have an amazing set up. Very efficient. The gates used to move the cattle around are well thought out. I see they have pastured in the good weather, but how are they housed in the winter? How big is your farm? How many do you milk and how many replacement heifers? Do you use AI or do you have bulls on sight? Anyway, very impressive and a pleasure to watch. Thank you for posting.
Great set-up guys, but i bet it frecking freezing milking in there in winter, too open to the elements for me, how do you go on for freezing up in winter?
Thanks a million! 😄 We try to keep it as best we can, some days are tidier than others 😅 We like it, it’s a fairly simple parlour and it doesn’t give much bother. We’re based in the midlands!
Hello. I am going to go to Ireland, work on a dairy in Fennor Ardcath region, near Dublin. I would like to know about living condition. Where do farm workers live?
Thanks a mil Seán 🤗 Oh yes we use the shaving foam to mark the cow for drafting out. We’re breeding at the moment so we find the foam handier than using coloured sprays to mark the cows for AI. The foam will just fall off after she’s been drafted out 😄
Hello Sir good day I am a foreigner currently living in Cork city Ireland.I would like to learn dairy farm work and make my future job in this field. Please could you tell me how would i do this in Ireland. Thanks a lot
Thank you Chuck 😄 There was a lot of time spent looking at parlours before we put in our current system. It’s all copied from other farmers so we can’t take much credit but thank you 🤗
Hi Roy. Glad to hear you’re interested in working on a dairy farm. We currently don’t have any vacancies on our farm but I’m sure if you searched for dairy farming jobs in Ireland there should be lots of opportunities. Best of luck with the job search 😊
Yes Pádraig worked in NZ on a dairy farm so brought a lot of ideas back from there when setting up the farm here. Absolutely you’re right, it could do with a good cleaning down 😊
It takes us about 2 hours in the morning and 1.5 hours in the evening at peak production. At the moment it’s about 1.5 hours in the morning and just over an hour in the evening because we’re down to six rows 😊
The cows marked with white are the cows that we draft out during milking. The red paint is for breeding. We paint it on their back & it helps us find out when the cows are ready for breeding 😄
Keane Farm Life I see. Is this color coding a standardised practise or something that you find works best for you. We are a dairy farmers based in Pakistan, and I love to learn new procedures from others.
Yes we milk a mix of Holstein-Friesian, Jersey cross and Norweigan Red Cross cows. About two thirds of the herd are Holstein-Friesian and the rest are crossbreds 😊
Dairy farmers have no regard for water charges hahah. A lot of water used like. Could you tell us how much litres of water are used per liter of milk produced. Ive never been on a dairy farm they all use a lot of water I'm sure
If they use 50-100liters doing washing which is required by law. That's a small price to pay for clean conditions... In terms of how much water is used per liter of milk well the water don't just disappear when a cow pee or when the milk is drank. So technically less than 1 liter of water is what 1 liter of milk is.
On our farm we use 5.6 liters of water per 1 liter of milk. Including drinking water for cows and young cattle, cleaning (all cleaning work), private water consumption, ...etc.
Hello. I am one of the people who like to work in cow farms and drive tractors, so I want to ask you if you need workers to work in the farm, thank you for your interest.👍
No not really to be honest, we’d have the odd one that might move around a bit but once the heifers are trained in we generally don’t get too much hassle.
beautiful setup.it is such a shame you didn't put in proper feeders .a 40 year investment.and i know you will say it was cost.but get them in as soon as possible.cheers.wish you luck.im from cork.
Thank you very much Maurice 😊 Thanks a million for your comment & the heads up on the feeders, we’ll keep that in mind. Hope all is well in Cork at the moment, mind yourself 🤗
Pádraig converted the home farm to dairying in 2014 and started out with 45 in-calf heifers. We have been very lucky with grants & the opportunity to lease additional ground. This has allowed us to build up to the numbers we have today. I'm hoping to record a farm information video this week so I'll put the history of the farm in that. Let us know if you'd like to know anything else :)
We start morning milking at 6am and evening milking at 3pm so we’re usually finished up somewhere between 5pm - 5.30pm. It’s breeding at the moment so that’s our main focus but we’re also reseeding a couple of paddocks & making some silage bales. Plenty to keep us busy 😊
I really liked the part explaining milking technology at 4:43, it’s impressive! This is very useful information for anyone looking into dairy farming.

Lovely farm , fair play to ye. Curious to know what you were doing with the foam when you marked the cow?
Thanks a mil Seán 🤗 Oh yes we use the shaving foam to mark the cow for drafting out. We’re breeding at the moment so we find the foam handier than using coloured sprays to mark the cows for AI. The foam will just fall off after she’s been drafted out 😄
