Through the Lens - PICO 4 Vs PICO Neo 3 Link with Display Port Cable

- In this video, through the lens footage of the Pico 4 and Pico Neo 3 Link will be shown, allowing for comparison during PCVR use. Which one will provide the best clarity? I think we all know, but watch to find out.
I am continuously trying to improve my recording footage through the lens and have tried improving it by doing the following:
- Set the Pico Neo 3 Link to 90hz, which as I record footage at 30 frames per second, should remove more of the black lines which move across the screen. Note that the black lines in the video aren’t visible in the headset, and are only visible on the recording device if the frame rate isn’t a multiple of the recording frame rate (30, 60, 90 etc)
- Macro lens for my camera, which did have its own macro setting/lens, but this allowed for a slightly better image and focus.
If you have any further tips please let me know!

Sadly the lack of displayport is the biggest letdown on the pico 4. They made a "underperforming quest 2" with better screen and lenses instead. This headset could be a game changer for pcvr, but not this time.
The two issues for Pico are :
- they don't make money from PCVR-only users
- a proprietary cable integrating DP+USB is costly
@@davidvincent380 they could solve both problems by selling the pico 4 at profit with displayport. Most people would be very happy paying 600-800$ for a pico 4 with DP. since the market doesnt have anything like it. Either the controller tracking is shit (G2) or the Visuals (Index) are. There is no headset that has great controller tracking great visuals und displayport.
@@TrenMax well the Neo3 has decent visuals now but yeah, one can only imagine what could give higher res+pancake lenses+DP -_-
i don't know what ur on about, the pico 4 does everything the quest 2 does but better
wow, I didn't expect that, thanks for the material and discussion, because it's hard to see it in the movies
You sir, read my mind! Exactly what i wanted to see :)
What about FOV? I jsut received Pico Neo 3 Link and I think that FOV is much smallet than Quest 2, but image quality via DP vs USB cable is more clear. Also what I notised for example in the "Home" of PICO where is the Earth, when I move my head, the picture looks like when you throw stone in to the watter.
Congrats on getting the PICO Neo 3 Link! Don't worry about the wobbly water effect, check for a system update, it should update and almost completely fix it 👍 As for Fov, due to the thick facial interface the Fov isn't quite as advertised on the PN3L. Join the discord for Pico if not already, there are some solutions to that. Fov is slight better on the PICO 4. Hope you get those bits sorted easily, and enjoy it 👌
by 2030 I believe people will be looking at this like we look at the amiga in 2024
Hi, thank you for your unbiased opinion. I'm still using an old Rift CV1, mainly for flying in War Thunder, not so much demanding in terms of GPU, I can play it with an old Geforce GTX 970 (next to be upgraded) and some other action games to play standing up. I decided it's time to get rid of cables and sensors of the bulky CV1 and ordered Pico 4 (arriving on november 8th): new optics, light, no cables and so on. I'll be able to use it stand alone in any room of my house.
My concern is about PCVR: will I be able to play War Thunder with Pico 4, wireless or wired USB3?
Any report about it?
I'm asking because I'm thinking about cancelling the order for Pico 4 and go for a Pico Neo 3...
Thank you for the comment 👍 If you have got War Thunder on Steam or the Oculus store, then you can play it with the PICO 4 wirelessly. I'd recommend getting Virtual Desktop on the PICO store on the PICO 4 to make the wireless experience as good as it can be. The PICO 4 will give you the best wireless experience, whereas the PICO Neo 3 Link will give the best wired experience and picture, whatever you choose-hope you enjoy the upgrade 👍
I'm a CV1 owner who has used a Rift S, Vive, Quest 2, and G2.
I can tell you 2 things for certain: You will HATE any headset that uses USB or wireless, and your 970 will struggle massively with any modern headset.
My recommendation is either a Neo 3 Link, or Reverb G2. Just keep in mind that you'll need to run it at 50% resolution until you can upgrade your GPU.
@@nb8c_fd
Hi, thanks for hints.
A GPU upgrade Is planned. What's your suggestion? keeping an eye on the wallet...
@@giorgioconte4447 It depends on your budget really.
If you want to run a Reverb G2 at 80-100% resolution and 90 FPS, you'll need at least a 3090. However, you can run the headset at 60-70% resolution, which still looks much better than a Quest 2, with a 3070, 6800XT, 3080, or 6900XT
Hello! I haven’t tried VR yet, I’m planning to get one for VRChat. So it’s better to get Pico 4 or Pico Neo 3? I’ve read some comments, but still cant decide.
For VR Chat I would highly recommend the PICO 4 over the Neo 3 Link. You get a slightly better image when the Neo 3 Link is connected to a PC as it uses a display port cable, but general comfort and accessories is better with the PICO 4, which ever you choose, enjoy 👍😀
great video! returned my p4 and got a p3nl instead, the DP is night and day different for me. p3nl is the natural successor for the cv1
Glad you liked the video, and that youre pleased with your PN3L. It is night and day with the PN3L and P4, but PICO have probably hit the market that they wanted, with the majority of users probably being on standalone. Fingers crossed for another hybrid PCVR/standalone to replace/upgrade the PN3L in a few years 👍
But only if you have the right IPD. Pico still has problems with their lens profiles.
I’ve been looking for a pcvr like the neo link for mfs2020 would this be a lot better than my quest 2 due to compression I can not find any comparisonion for that sim with it
Hello. Is there any difference between using the DP cable and USB 3.0 cable in picture quality? I’m choosing now between pico neo 3 and pico4. I’m gonna play only wired through the steam…
Yes, with USB 3.0 it compresses the picture and uncompresses it when it reaches the headset. This can lead to compression artifacts which can make it look slightly more blurry or pixelated. You probably won't notice it in most games, but it's very noticeable on more demanding ones such as racing or flight sims. If you do choose the PICO 4, then wired or wireless will be the same quality of image. So the PICO Neo 3 Link with it's display port cable will be a higher quality image. Hope that helps 👍
@@DayDreamerVR thanks. its clear now. Here, in Ukraine, neo 3 link/pro costs the same price as pico 4 (brand new, used neo 3 link i couldnt even find to compare).
What is the very next best option to the neo 3 link for PC VR with Displayport? Hp reverb g2 maybe ?
Unfortunately Windows Mixed Reality is not being updated any more, so the HP Reverb G2 isn't a particularly good choice anymore, and you would probably find the quality very similar to the PICO Neo 3 Link anyway. There is a huge gap in the market, and there are no better options than the Neo 3 Link until you get to the Bigscreen Beyond or Pimax Crystal. I'm not aware of any reasonably priced display port headsets coming out any time soon either unfortunately
Hello, i have a pico 4 and im thiking of trading it in for a picon3link, how does the sweet spot compare would you say? will it be a really rough, reggretble downgrade do you think? I didnt get on too well with the G2 for this reason
It is difficult to say at this point, the Neo 3 Link still remains as an excellent headset in terms of clarity for PCVR, but it is less comfortable, and the sweet spot is probably similar to the Quest 2,which is okay, just not as good as pancake lenses. If you are after low latency with display port and the clarity it brings then the Neo 3 Link is a good choice 👍
@@DayDreamerVR thanks for the reply, appreciate that. Would you say the Screen door effect is much worse on the link3 over the p4? And how it compares to the G2?
@@gramsci1094 no problem. I would say that for PCVR, when you are using it in demanding scenarios where compression is most visible with the PICO 4 like racing sims, the G2 will have the clearest image, the the Neo 3 Link, then the PICO 4. For other roomscale games such as HL Alyx, the G2 and the PICO 4 will be very similar, and the Neo 3 Link very close behind
@@DayDreamerVR okay thankyou very much, I think what I might do is just get one aswell as the Pico 4 and use it just for lower latency more demanding things.
Thanks for making this video. I have a pico4 and just ordered a neo 3 to try 🙂
Awesome, hope you like it. I would say the comfort of the PICO 4 is better, but the image quality of the Neo 3 Link is so good. Feel free to check out some of my others videos if you haven't already-I have a few about both headsets and mods/accessories 👍
@@DayDreamerVR I've not had much time on it yet, but I think I prefer the Pico 3 over the 4. The overall quality is much better in my opinion.
@@SimVRRacing Glad to hear you're pleased with it 👍 the picture quality is really good
@@DayDreamerVR Yeah, I'm really happy withn it. Even though I have a 4090 and was running god mode in virtual desktop, I still think the Pico 3 is better. The greys of the racetrack with all the skidmarks are so much clearer to see, which only really becomes apparent when you are moving. I think lots of people just look at a static image, but it's when you are moving does the compression really start to show up. Plus the load on my GPU is much lower, so I can run 90fps with max settings and still have plenty left in the tank for night races, and rain. Just ordered a 3dprinted faceplate which is the only issue, but had the same with the pico4.
@@SimVRRacing Interesting to hear that with the 4090. I have a 3080, and had wondered how the PN3L compares to the PICO 4 when a better gpu is used. Glad you've got a solution for the stock interface as it really is needed 👍
Can a 2080ti or 3070 run Skyrim VR with Neo 3 Link at decent frame-rate and resolution?
Yes definitely, If you want it for the wireless experience and not for the display port cable then the PICO 4 would be the better choice 👍
I want to move from Quest 2 to Pico 3 just for its displayport. Is it true that Pico 3 will be better in performance because it won’t have to encode since it’s displayport. And this have better quality and performance than a usb-c based connection?
Yes it's true. You will be able to get better visuals with the PICO Neo 3 Link because of its displayport, and as you say, also because the graphics card won't need to do any encoding 👍
@@DayDreamerVR thanks, and does the headset only work with steamVR api? Can it be switched to openXR/ opencomposite?
@@AdzzVR as far as I am aware, steam vr uses Openvr, that is the main runtime with PCVR. If you use it with an app called Virtual Desktop, you can play Oculus PCVR titles. Open XR does work but with a very limited range of games. Open composite is not compatible. Hope that helps 👍
Hello im planning to buy VR headset for sim racing and want little to no latency in the headset so i will take the neo 3 link i think. i read that the neo 3 link has distortion issue with width and height is it still the case ?
No longer the case 👍 enjoy 😀
@@DayDreamerVR thanks for the answer correct me if im wrong but the pico neo 3 is the best choice for my case ? 90% will be PCvr mostly simracing (iracing)
@@SmoKeCSGO definitely, excellent image quality, no compression artefacts, and requires less gpu resource than options such as pico 4/Quest 2 👍
I guess the Pico 4 will be better for a relaxing "vrchat" session or something like that, as it outperforms the Pico 3 Link in comfort.
While the Pico 3 Link due to native DP will be better for SIM racing or maybe als FPS games, where fast movements are required.
It's still such a let down that they didn't make a Pico 4 version with DP.
From everything I have looked at so far, due to the higher resolution it struggles as a standalone at a decent refresh rate, for image quality during PCVR - a display cable will beat it hands down, however for wireless PCVR I think this headset is one of the best out there 👍
@@DayDreamerVR Interesting, I might end up buying the Pico 4 as well, just to have a look at it^^
@@RabbitConfirmed That's exactly what I did 🤣 You'll easily be able to sell it with minimal loss if any if you decide it's not for you 👍
@@DayDreamerVR Only paid 385 Euro for it on bestbuy. Kinda dope now I can compare the two.
Most likely will sell my Quest 2 and then decide whether I'll ditch Pico 3 Link or the Pico 4. Or maybe I'll just keep both lol.
@@RabbitConfirmed that's exactly where I am with it, I will definitely keep the neo 3 link, but debating whether to keep the Pico 4 for wireless PCVR 😁
hi, what sort of cable usb are you using for the pico 4 ? can we use the quest 2 usb cable ?
Hi, so the Pico comes with its own charging cable, but it is only suitable for charging or loading content/apps onto it. If you want to use a cable for PCVR, it would need a longer cable and a USB 3 cable would be recommended - Ideally one with a 90 degree USB C connection on one end. However, for PCVR I would recommend using Virtual Desktop on it for wireless PCVR, and you would only need a USB cable if you wanted to charge it from the including USB power supply, or from a USB power bank. The included charger is 20 watts. The Quest 2 cable could be used to charge it, but as stated you get a USB cable with it. If you have a long USB 3 cable for the Quest then that would also work here for charging/wired PCVR if you did want to. Hope that helps 👍
@@DayDreamerVR can i use a cable? i dont want to be exposed to wifi radiation on my head for hours and hours.
is it possible to use usbc for pcvr?
@@johnmachter40 yes you can, you'd need a USB 3.0 cable 👍
Hi bro I watched your video about - "Through the Lens - PICO 4 Vs PICO Neo 3 Link with Display Port Cable" but I have a question - what would you recommend to buy for the first time pico 3 or pico 4??? it's just that there are not much differences except for the resolution and image quality.
If you are doing racing sims then I would recommend the Neo 3 Link, as the image quality is better with it's display port cable, however the PICO 4 has been improving with Virtual Desktop and is better for everything else, especially comfort and available accessories 👍
@@DayDreamerVR thanks
Have there been any attempts to put pancake lenses in the pico neo 3 series of products? (as a mod)
@@B16B0SS unfortunately if you did then you would need to update all the software as the image that is put on the screen would not match the lens distortion, so everything you see would all be out of shape. So is probably not possible
@@DayDreamerVR I see. I feel like the Neo 3 as a product would benefit from a refresh like this. A PCVR headset with a modest resolution and a direct link to the PC with the clarity of pancake lenses. That is what I am looking for. I have a Quest 3 but my PC cannot push it properly and the compression I see bothers me.
@@B16B0SS yeah, I wish more headsets would consider a display port connection. They seem to think that a faster WiFi connection will resolve it, but with the encoding and decoding needed, and speed of current WiFi, we are far off the wireless PCVR experience that would replace a display port connection.
Great video. Still surprising VD comes close to DP quality if compression isn’t visible. It’s a shame pico link cable quality isn’t good compared to the quest 2 link cable quality which can be run at 1.5x res. Hoping for Pico or VD to implement better use of the link cable since it should be way better than wireless mode.
Thank you, the picture quality of the pico 4 wireless is so far behind the display port capability of the pico neo 3 link overall, but Virtual Desktop performs very well compared to Pico's own streaming software. It really is a shame that if they have decided not to use a display port cable with the PICO 4, that they haven't maximised the use of USB cable streaming (although the decoding capability of the XR2 is still the main limiting factor) . Maybe with future updates it will improve, still lots of optimisation to be done 👍
Trought the lens video like this are not very representative because its compress two different image that will give double the bluriness of just one picture and broke a little bit the perception of the 3D, i dont know if you have tried dp PCVR but its a masive difference
@@maddugqc6911Thank you for the message, the comparison was against VR using a display port cable, sorry if that wasn't clear, I will try and improve for future videos, thanks
@@DayDreamerVR Its ok what i mean is that when you look at pico 4 in one lens you think: Ha its not that a massive difference but you dont think that the other eye is bluried diferently wich broke the 3d and make thing more blurry, so compared one Display port eye with one compress eye is not representative to show the gap between the two, other than that you do good video GOOD WORK :)
Thanks for the honest review. I use Pico 4 exclusively as a standalone, so it's a no-brainer for me :)
The pico 3 link can you extent the cable length?
Thanks for your message, I saw you also messaged on the PICO Discord server, hopefully you'll get an answer there. From looking at Displayport 1.4 extension cables on amazon, the reviews indicate some cables work for some headsets. I haven't tested any myself so can't confirm at the moment, hope you find your answer, and if you do then please let me know! If I manage to find out I will message you. Thanks
compression artefacts ruin what could have otherwise been a quest 2/pro/index/vive etc killer all in one! although read somewhere XR2 chip is capable of dp to USB c...maybe in a future update this is enabled?
The PICO Neo 3 Link has display port over USB C, however I think PICO would have advertised this potential in the PICO 4 (even if it wasn't activated) as they got quite a lot of flack for not having it. Could have been easily the best all rounder if it did/does have it though 👍
@@DayDreamerVR I have a strong feeling they might add a DP to USBC cable for the Pico 4 in the future, they did that with the Neo 3 Pro and Pro Eye. I am sure a lot of us won't mind buying it for 100 USD. I have the Neo 3 LInk and I am surprised how well the DP to USBC C performs despite running on an XR2 chip.
XR2 Chip is certainlty capable of USB C to DP. The Neo 3 Link has it
@@danceoffAsh Pico don't make money with PCVR-ony users, they don't care about DP
@@davidvincent380 It's a deal breaker for most people. They can sell more units with a DP port included. Just refer to Pico Neo 3 Link
what would you advise to take as the first helmet of virtual reality?
If you wanted to get something now, if you don't want to connect it to a PC to play games, then I would recommend the PICO 4.if you want to connect it to the PC to play PC VR games, but mainly not for sim racing or flying then I would recommend the PICO 4.if you are willing to wait until roughly October then the Quest 3 will be the best choice for standalone gaming or PCVR. Hope that helps 👍
@@DayDreamerVR I also want to buy my first VR headset. I have I5 11400f + RX 6600 with 16 gb of RAM. I don't think my PC will run games at native PICO 4 res. I will mainly play fps games. Pico Neo 3 Link will cost me a 1/3 less than Pico 4. I know that Pico Neo 3 controllers are similar to Quest 2 and I didn't quite like those. What do you think I should buy? I won't play sim racing games and flying simulators
I wouldn't recommend the PICO Neo 3 Link if you aren't going to play racing or flight sims, it would be better to get the PICO 4, or Quest 2 (if you want to save some money) if you want to get it now. The PICO 4 will be the better headset, and it has good available accessories to make it very comfortable. The Quest 2 will be cheaper, and has been developed/perfected to a very high level, but the visuals aren't quite as good as the PICO 4. The Quest 3 is coming out later this year but will be more expensive, and the visuals will only be similar to the PICO 4, so the PICO 4 is probably still better for you. Hope that helps, enjoy 👍
Can displayport put out 120hz for Neo 3?
Unfortunately not, the current maximum is 90hz, and there hasn't been any indication of 120hz coming in the future
how's the FOV on both
The FOV is slightly more with the PICO 4, but it you mod the PICO Neo 3 Link with a 3D printed facial interface, then you can get the FOV very similar, which is around 100-105 in my tests.
@@DayDreamerVR Thanks for your response. I don't have a 3d printer, but i guess they might sell them online or something. I tried the DPVR but wasn't a big fan of it. Been thinking about getting the pico neo 3 link

Nah, the massive sweet spot that Pancake lenses provide on the Pico 4 is what seals the deal for me; I could never go back to a headset with Fresnel lenses now
I agree the sweet spot does make it easy to get an excellent clear view, the image quality for PCVR sim racing though is easily beaten by the PICO Neo 3 Link even with fresnel lenses, I have ended up keeping both headsets which I didn't intend to do, PN3L for wired PCVR such as sim racing, and the P4 for any wireless gaming. For me I would have paid the cost of both headsets to get one headset that does it all 👍
Have you tried a DP to USB-C adapter? There are bidirectional ones that can convert the DP signal to a USB-C input... Then run wired on the Pico 4... I'm not aware of this works
It is possible to run the PICO 4 with a USB cable, and even use a USB cable with Virtual Desktop. I haven't personally tried it though, as with the current available settings it won't improve the image when compared to wireless Virtual Desktop. Unfortunately a display port cable to USB adapter doesn't work with it
@@DayDreamerVR I know about the original cabling through USB, but have you tried a DP to usb converter?
@@Slyngelstaten I haven't tried one, but I don't believe the USB C connection on the headset carries a display port signal, and an adapter wouldn't change that. If you aren't on it, the PICO discord has a lot of active members who might be able to assist further 👍

Honestly I prefer the look of the Pico 4 when side by side It looks much sharper, just look at the fence on the right hand side and the buttons on the steering wheel.
It's a real mix, I find the clarity is better because of the lenses, but there are compression artifacts which can make it look worse, especially when moving
Is pico Dead? I will own a pico 3 link only for pc vr
That's a good question. I think it might feel like they are at the moment, but there might be another device this year, so they could be working on that-we shall see. I still think the Neo 3 Link is an excellent VR headset though, especially for its displayport quality. If you want to get a better experience for sim racing or flying, you have to spend several times the amount (PICO Neo 3 Link is currently £236 on Amazon UK)
2:45 Those through the lens videos are worthless : you need to actually play et move your head to get the whole extent of the video compression of the Pico 4
I personally find it incredibly noticeable whilst stationary, but they are worthless following the Virtual Desktop update. The compression is much less noticeable at 400mbps bitrate
OMG, both of your headsets look so blurry in comparison to your desktop video. Thanks, I will stay flat for some more month...
That's probably in part due to the difficulty in getting an absolutely clear through the lens image. You are right though that a flat image can currently look realistic in terms or clarity and pixelation, whilst vr still has some way to go. High spec headsets are now starting to get there. Despite that, VR racing for me is totally worth it 👍
