- Next up in my 'Sydney birding hotspots' series. Long Reef Aquatic Reserve.
Highlights include Cormorants, Australasian Darter, Pelican, Oystercatcher, Terns and more.
Long Reef Aquatic Reserve is the oldest aquatic reserve in NSW and is centred on the extensive intertidal rocky shores that fringe the prominent Long Reef headland.
A diversity of marine life is associated with the range of rocky shore habitats and different degrees of wave exposure around the headland.
The aquatic reserve also includes Fishermans Beach at Collaroy, a sheltered sandy beach on the northern side of the headland, the very exposed and rip-dominated northern end of Long Reef Beach, and some very small areas of sandy beach in amongst the rocky shore on Long Reef headland itself.
The reserve is also an important site for many species of migratory shorebirds

Awesome thanks! Plenty more locations and birds to come.
That Darter was putting on a show drying out their feathers. Beautiful captures off one of my favourite places in Sydney. Very inspiring!
It really was putting on a great show. Beautiful birds.
Really enjoying these vids Roger - you've given me some ideas of places to go bird watching around Syd.
Thanks so much, great to hear. Will hopefully make a few more soon
Nice video! Love the Australian Pelicans!
Thank you. They are such nice birds.
I've left a comment on another one of your superb videos. I live in the U.K. and will be travelling to Oz later this year (2024) in May/June. I'll be staying in NSW for three weeks, and was looking to do some birding around Sydney and beyond. If you are free I could be your birdwatching taxi around Sydney!
Thank you Graham, that is an exciting holiday, and if you have never been here before and love birds you are in for a real treat. My hotspots are the perfect places to look, you are guaranteed to see plenty of birds. Let me know when you are here and Ill see if I have some time free.
@@RogerMacKertich Hi Roger, thanks for reading my comments, very much appreciated. The birding trip will commence when I finish leading a railway themed tour which finishes on 10th June, I am then flying to Sydney straight away and planning on spending 5 days there, then going to Hunter Valley and as yet an undecided area, then back to Sydney on the 25/26th June, leaving on the 1st July. It would be great if we could meet up and share some antipodean birding! There are so many sites around Sydney I could spend the whole 3 weeks there!
