Excuse me miss, could you please do a video about Ishimaru? He and Toko were my favorites from the first game and i greatly feel like the greater part of our fandom doesn't recognise how amazing he is😖Sorry, i might sound a little selfish saying this
I believe the same as you, that Genocider came to life after the boy who she confessed to mocked her. I would like to note that the way Genocider pins her victims looks like the way you'd pin something to a bulletin board... similar to how the boy she liked pinned her love letter to the bulletin board.

Dude Touko Fukawa is seriously the most badass character ever. she had TWO SHSL TITLES! Super High School Level novelist and Super High School Level Murderer. She's super badass and no one can say anotherwise
since toko has an alter, that means her brain created jill as a way for her to cope with the trauma she went through. the reason why she may not have more alters is because she can cope (well kind of). because the first boy that toko loved basically betrayed her, jill most likely kills other boys that they both find attractive or are in love with as a way to prevent them from being betrayed again. this is just my take but yknow
@@ShinyShilla maybe she finds that more trustworthy. Him being openly hostile and unpleasant could be better than someone who hides abusive tendencies and hostility behind a nice front in her mind
5:41 Syo was formed through childhood trauma. I have DID, the representation of the disorder was actually well researched and depicted (other than the violent/murdering alter trope which is horrible), so I believe this line is referring to the abuse from her mothers. When an alter is formed, it's actually involuntary, as well as what that alter does- Fukawa is doesn't want to kill people and likewise Syo isn't killing because she shares Fukawa's worldview. Her low self esteem to me is largely because of emotional abuse and bullying, but to form alters, you need pretty severe trauma (like the event she describes being locked in a closet) which causes your brain to form barriers that allow a distinct identity to develop and the individual to cope with the trauma by repressing the more distressing details of it. I hope this provides insight, because considering Syo to just be an aspect of her personality is the only part of this analysis that's lacking to me really. Like throughout there were things that I think could be clarified by a better understanding of DID. There's a lot of stigma and misinformation around this disorder but straight up thinking of them as two distinct characters who have to deal with each other's existence is the most accurate to this disorder and luckily pretty close to how the series depicts them.
alfalfa thank you, I have multiple friends with DID and I felt like there was a lack of knowledge about the disorder which lead to this otherwise well-thought out analysis feeling incomplete. Syo strikes me as a persecutor alter, but dr sadly aided the trope of alters being murderous :(
@@gummyfang Yeah, I was kind of shocked at the emphasis on her loneliness and stuff like that in this video when she canonically has DID, which can only be caused by trauma at a certain point in a child's development, and the game went out of its way to clarify that she had experienced early childhood trauma. And while I certainly don't know of any systems who have any alters as violent as her, her self injury and mockery of the host is a pretty common phenomenon, especially with DID systems who haven't received much therapy. The serial killing and pseudo-invincibility in the later game are unfortunate tropes to perpetuate, but overall, DR handles the disorder better than most depictions, even fairly respectfully depicting a hypersexual, hostile, and self injurious alter, and the way the host and other characters treat Syo is quite nuanced compared to other depictions. The fandom, less nuanced or respectful... this video being a good example of a fan having a poor understanding of how DID works despite the canon of the game actually presenting it in a psychiatrically sound manner. And plenty of resources are available-- traumadissociation.com is a very credible and accessible resource for people who'd like to understand this disorder and character a bit better.
@@siem9329 I understand the sentiment, but that isn't how DID or good representation works. Some people are polyfragmented with over a hundred alters, and some are like in DR, only 2 alters. The dissociative barriers and altered states are what matters, not the number of distinct parts. Everyone's brain handles trauma uniquely, and people with trauma histories involving CSA and ritual abuse are most likely to have more parts, but otherwise it's not fully understood what dictates the formation, number, type, etc. That being said, I agree that it would be more realistic for there to be a couple more alters if someone had early childhood trauma and was abused and bullied repeatedly throughout their childhood, but there's a lot of variation in the manifestation of trauma. The biggest issue (other than the Big one, haha) with Fukawa/Syo imo is when they started changing things in an unrealistic way like Syo's invincibility, and I think I would be bugged if DR started changing even more about her system like introducing new alters out of nowhere. But I do think it might have been nice for her to have been a more typical DID system with a few alters, a more clear/accurate/respectful explanation of her disorder in universe, and no serial killing, of course :P
@@alfalfa_art true, I hate how Syo is portrayed as a serial killer because as far as I know, persecutors do not intend harm to others except if it's really needed in order protect the system. I agree that there a lot of things that needs to be discovered regarding DID because it's such an interesting disorder. I really wish that there are nore alters like a child, a man and more.
@@sukh_seeding_at_art No, I'm quite sure it's actually confirmed that every time Genocide Jack kills someone, she marks it on her thigh. I mean, this could also be interpreted as self-harming, no?
@@dy-or4pc one of the reasons she doesn't shower often is because of something that happened in her childhood. One of her moms tried to drown her in the bath, which im pretty sure caused her to shower/bathe a lot less
during danganrnpa 1 toko was one of my least favorite characters aside from her serial killer side, however ultra despair girls definitely expanded on her character making her one of my favorite characters of the series, its pretty impressive how they made toko into such an interesting character after the first game imo
@@WhatRemainsofNovaJames I don't know if I can speak for OP but originally she wasn't my favorite because she constantly accused you of thinking bad things about her and was just kinda weird with her whole Byakuya stalker thing and I think implied bad self hygiene and she just was kinda there and if I remember correctly she wasn't the closest to Makoto who is our perspective unless you did her FTEs and also just wasn't to memorable except for her bad traits.
bro exactly the same as me. she was probably my least favorite in the entire game because if she wasn't being annoying she was somewhat humorous but that's all there was to her, genocide jack really helped her character from being the worst in the first game. however, her development just in the series and the more you learn about her has quickly made her one of the best in the entire franchise hands down
idk if i’m being nitpicky here but toko doesn’t have a “serial killer side” because gencocider is an alter, and so would be her own person and not a “side” of toko
Toko is one of my favorite female characters in the series. She's so complex and I can sympathize with her the fastest since I know how it feels to be alone and really get into romance novels.
@@Ich-Existiere-Nicht Thank you. I gotten passed the feeling now since I'm older and realize I'm fully comfortable in being "alone" and not lonely anymore. 😊 Touko still one of my faves and relatable character.
Kodaka is just to amazing to be real. He creates these interesting mind blowing killing games for us to solve, great characters to learn backstories from, where does this creativity come from?!
Nagito is the best thing ever. Not only does he have cancer but His parents died from his own luck and he feels that it was his fault everyone died on that plane. I've heard he also had a dog but they died too.
Kodaka’s kinda gross tbh ( like how Mikan and Akane both have s3xu4l tr4um4 but are still s3xu4l1zed, the n4z1 imagery, the multiple inc3st backstories, etc)
@@ZanyMei Hajime is made in a more realistic and identifiable way, while Makoto was made with the goal of him becoming the ultimate "hope" and face Junko's ultimate despair. It is not necessarily badly written but his character plays a less realistic role and it is difficult to identify with his character. You might think that Junko and Makoto are made from a similar recipe which is "hope" (extremely pure) and "despair" (extremely dark), while Hajime is oblivious to those two fictional phenomena becoming more realistic.
Please keep in mind that DID cannot form after early childhood, because it only stops a personality from fully integrating so the host won't remember the trauma. I think genocider HAD to come from her mothers when she was young as this is some of the earliest and most intense trauma in the game.
You pretty much explained this, but one aspect of her character that always bothered me was that she is so thoroughly masochistic, yet her worst fear is to be genuinely humiliated. Personally, I think that by developing masochistic tendencies, it could have alleviated the impact of the mockery she received from others. By deriving a pleasure from it, she could maintain the power in her relationships by stripping the enjoyment others felt from barading her. Just an idea though!
Actually, being masochistic as a personality does not mean that they actually react positively to that, just that they subconciously seek that pain. People that stay in toxic relationships despite seeing all the bad signs and having an overall bad time do have masochistic traits as well for example, even if they really don't like that. That's why Toko keeps loving byakuya as well, despite him being a piece of shit to her, and to most people, and being an overall stuck up jackass. Masochism frequently appears as an oxymoron as well.
@Anime Person I don’t think they mean in an unstable way, but more so when you look at how she behaves in a watered down way it can be kind of relatable
I think Toko's mothers may have been ladies of the evening. I mean, look at Toko, overly modest in her clothes but she has a lot of candid thoughts. That and having a child would be a problem.
AgapeForgotten and that can also back up the reasoning of a child passing (many ladies of the evenings use drugs) and the fact they both had a child with the same man and many of them know of eachother or know eachother directly which could also be why they agreed to watch Toko together and some of the things they did to her that seem very horrible could be what they thought was best somehow seeing that they couldn’t be fit to take care of a child
In Ultra Despair Girls the parts I enjoyed the most where the discussions Fukawa and Komaru had about manga, light novels and such. I found hers and Komarus opinions fascinating.
Oh god I relate to her so much it hurts TW Like jeez, troubled home, dark events in the past, getting bullied as a child, introvert with bad/awkward social skills, eating disorder, writer/storyteller, having a ideological idea of love and romance from a young age because people rejected me which led to me reading fantasy like love stories, also just having a screwed up idea of love (I wanted to be in a relationship so bad I didn't even care if they abused me I just needed someone) generally quite, low self esteem, intrusive violent thoughts (which I don't like to admit I have but I do) Like, the list just goes on and on as to why I relate to her on such a strong level, I love her sm, she's such a comfort character for me ;_;
Another sad thing is that I think when toko was young one of her mothers tried to drown her in a bath tub that’s why she’s afraid of bathing or showers and thats why togami thinks she stinks SHE DESERVES SO MUCH BETTER
Upon hearing Toko's past, I feel confident that she almost certainly has some form of PTSD. I'm no psychologist, so take what I say here with a pinch of salt, but I believe Toko's past is strongly indicative of Complex PTSD, which is linked to Dissociative Identity Disorder that manifests as Genocide Jack. Here's my thought process, and fair warning; it's a long one by UA-cam comment standards! First up, some clarification; PTSD and Complex PTSD are very similar, but stem from different circumstances. PTSD is usually caused by a single prominent event, and manifests roughly a month after trauma. However, Complex PTSD can be given as a diagnosis when the person has repeatedly experienced traumatic events through a long period of time. It isn't fully agreed if Complex PTSD is a form of PTSD or a separate condition. but in this case, Toko's situation more correlates with Complex PTSD. Complex PTSD is thought to be more severe if the trauma happens early in life, the trauma was caused by a parent, guardian, or something close to them, the person was alone when the trauma occurs, the trauma has occurred for a long period of time, or the person is still in contact with the abuser. Naturally, most if not all of these circumstances reflect Toko's family situation, though I do not know if Toko stayed in contact with her mothers before the events of Danganronpa to confidently say it is fully accurate. Her unstable family situation between two mothers likely exacerbated the trauma to some extent, but by how much I cannot say. So how does this manifest in Toko's behaviour? Well, symptoms of Complex PTSD are similar to PTSD, but can include behaviours such as, but not limited to, feelings of shame or guilt, difficulty controlling emotions, distancing oneself from friends/family, relationship difficulties, and destructive or risky behaviour. Sufferers may also believe that they are permanently damaged or worthless, or feeling like you're completely different to others. Toko is very quick to protect herself from others, and her putting words into people's mouths is indicative of distancing from peers and feelings of being damaged, worthless or different. Her inability to control her fantasies or lashing out may also indicate her inability to control her emotions. Another common trait of PTSD is avoidance and emotional numbing. PTSD victims will frequently take part in avoidance behaviours to push away thoughts and feelings. They will avoid places linked to trauma, and will sometimes distract themselves with work or hobbies. The former explains Toko's phobia of the dark, but the latter may be an influencing factor in her delving into romance novels and her writing. As for Toko's Dissociative Identity Disorder, it's worth bearing in mind that one of the most common causes of DID is trauma or abuse, especially during early childhood. PTSD also has a very strong link with dissociative conditions as a whole, solidifying the link that Toko's creation of Genocide Jack is due to her past trauma. Genocide Jack's personality may be strongly linked to her anger and humiliation caused by the boy who moved to Shikoku. Her memories of that boy, among many other emotions she had no outlet for due to her distancing herself from others, may have shaped the personality into an angry, vicious and lewd persona, and as many others in the comments have pointed her, her habit of pinning up her victims mirrors the act of the boy pinning up the letter... Though I must also add, much like how pinning the letter up started her path as the Ultimate Writer, pinning up victims starter her path as the Ultimate Serial Killer! I will reiterate that I am no psychologist, so if there are any inaccuracies I do apologise. This is mostly just my take on the matters Toko has gone through from what information I am aware of. If there are any more signs or symptoms, or I may be off base somewhere, do let me know!
@@misssugarpink6357 After looking over things, I am inclined to believe you there. The troublesome part about mental health issues is the overlap of causes, and that they oftentimes multiple can appear at once. BPD would more explain her extreme attachment towards Byakuya, and her often intense or unstable relations with the others, but PTSD also explains the manifestation of DID leading to Genocide Jack. Potentially, PTSD may well have manifested both the BPD and the DID, though I'm not 100% on that one. Either way, I am absolutely not a psychiatrist in any measure, so I won't claim to be an expert at all. I'd be incredibly interested to see what an actual psychiatrist would think of Toko though, because her development and insights into her character are incredibly fascinating.
@@PatrickT22 i always thought that she is one of the most fascinating and interesting characters in the whole series and games, and i found her mental issues and her tragic backstory really fascinating. i thought that she might have BPD cause i may have it too, i’m going to therapy now... it’s not just because i relate to her, but because looking and learning about it, i’m starting to think that she has almost all the symptoms, she has outsburst of rage, chronic emptiness and pain, she seems to have difficulty to regulate her emotions, she has serious trust issues and she is truly convinced that almost everyone will leave her, won’t care about her and will do something bad to her, like she is “unlovable” and these are the main symptoms of BPD. also, i’m not a psychiatrist or a psychologist, and sorry for my bad english, it’s not my main language.
Wow... I didn't even realise how similar I am to Toko. Even though the way we go about things are different, it's for the same cause. For example, when I was little, I used to be a victim of racism, and was heavily bullied and isolated by my peers for it. It twisted my reality so much that I couldn't (and still can't) help but think that everyone I met would hate me. So if someone's didn't immediately reject me, I would push them away by giving them the silent treatment. "If they didn't hate me at first they will hate me eventually right?" Was my way of thinking. I too had to fill this void called loneliness, and I done it by making imaginary characters up in my head. There was a point where I would draw them and talk to the drawings... Now that I think about it I wasn't exactly sane in the head... Well, that's where the similarities end for now. I didn't have someone like Komaru in my life yet. ... That's a lot of "I"s
It’s just a theory, so take it with a grain of salt, but I’m guessing that the reason why Toko hates taking showers is because of her low self esteem making her feel ashamed to even look at her own body.
It's actually because Genocide Jack/Jill cut a tally-mark on her leg for every person she's killed, and Toko hates being reminded of it. She definitely has low self-esteem about her body though.
bree boo that’s not lol ... it’s not funny or a joke ... and i am not bitching about it but it’s not a joke nor funny so please edit your comment and take out lol
@aesthetically sadie naiyah um? so what if i put a "lol" it's not offensive towards anything and maybe if u knew me i always put "lol" when i say shit like that to break the energy
So I have DID myself, and scientifically speaking, Genocider Syo would've had to be created from ages 6-9. I would say maybe because of how provocative Genocider is, maybe some sort of sexual abuse. Some more evidence towards my theory is that she murders any man she has sex with, which is maybe her form of revenge for Touko.
If Toko ever asks to be treated like dirt or says she's being treated like dirt, put a flower in her hair and wait for her to realize what you meant And if she doesn't get it, just say you like putting flowers in dirt
Definitely do Hajime next!!! That would be such an interesting video :) Loved this Fukawa character analysis as well!!! I definitely missed this series and I'm glad you're back!
I remember when I first played Danganronpa 1, Fukawa was the person I hated more than anything else. Several years later and she is my favorite character from the entire franchise. That's character development done right ;)
I think the early trauma in her life caused her DID, it’s canon she has DID and it’s caused by repeated trauma from the ages of 7-9, the other personality is supposed to take in the trauma, that explains the nature of Jill.
One thing thats never seems to be discussed is if Toko's mothers did truly mistreat her. I'm not saying that as in "oh, of course that couldn't happen!" Just that toko seems to be kinda unstable, and she would have biased against her mothers growing up, what with everything that happened in her life. Plus, if both mothers wanted to have equal claim to her, why then mistreat her so badly? Honestly, i feel as if there is more to this that toko doesn't know about, or somehow her mothers both cared for her and still treated her horribly. Idk it might be a confusing combination, and if so wow. No wonder toko is so messed up.
I believe that they both wanted Toko because there was a miscarriage and the mothers had a dispute over who had the dead baby? It was a point brought up in Ultra Despair Girls, but I don’t remember the full backstory.
4:33 if elementary school is before the age of 5 then-- thats how Genocide jack/Jill happened, cause with D.I.D, you have to have something happen wether it be at age 5 or younger- also, the reason Toko doesnt shower often, is because when she was younger one of her mothers tried drowning her so she has a fear of water/showeing
Because of Toko's severe trauma during her childhood, i believe Genocide Jack has been around for much longer before the first murder. Because Genocide Jack is the only alter we get to see, they're most probably are Toko's primary protector. My theory is, that she developed DID in her early childhood, when she was mistreated and abused by her mothers, the people who should've been protective of her, but she just didn't know about her condition, because that's sort of the point of DID - you're not supposed to know you have it. The trauma she survived as a child, i.e the closet lock-in, etc. was too severe for her to handle, so she developed DID, to protect herself from it. She passes all the criteria too, amnesiac barriers, time loss, memory loss, etc. so we definitely know this isn't just a farce or anything. When that boy she loved humiliated and betrayed her like that, I believe was when Genocide Jack, her primary protector snapped. They saw this boy as a threat to Toko's mental state and well-being and took all measures to protect her from that. Later on, when the killings continued, I can imagine Genocide J to start and project Toko's first love and it's miserable end onto other boys and killing them, which prevented Toko from getting hurt even further.

I agree that she's had the most character development in the series. Like... I really wanna see that development eventually grow into a confident woman who doesn't see herself as lesser trash (much like Byakuya ironically) anymore. Could happen due to Komaru. :)
I just wanted to say that these videos are awesome and super helpful! It really helps me understand these character more, which makes them a lot easier to write! THANK YOU!!!
Honesty, I was so surprised when I was observing Toko in Ultra Despair Girls. She was so different, yet, she was still Toko. Her character development through the game really impressed me.
Maybe genocide Jack was created to fill in a father feeling because if she reads so many romance novels she thought that a dad should be someone who rejects people and be aggressive so she has some sort of father feeling
Hiya, Weeby! Thanks for the video! :D I was wondering if you're planning to do a video on your thoughts on the V3 characters sometime? With Japan already having the game, the rest of us need something to satisfy our V3 hype, and a character speculation video would definitely do that! That would be so awesome! You really are the best UA-camr! I can feel my hype increasing already! Must... not... die of hype... before V3 is released...! (And hopefully not before I finish it either...!)

I really like that character analysis of yours. Hey, was there a scene where Komaru talks free time with Tojo and she reveals a little backstory about how Syo was created. Also, I don't like how Toko dislikes her personality. Honestly, they should be friends because that's who they are and should accept that part of her. Also, why does Toko dislike Makoto? Aren't they friends? Anyway, have a nice day!
I think she dislikes him because he constantly tried to help her and complement her which can come across to her as him lying and not being true with her
Genocider Jill's design reminds me a whole lot on a Japanese Urban Legend, Kuchisake-onna [the slit-mouthed woman] From the way Jill has her tongue sticking out from her mouth, the fact that she uses scissors. Though I can't explain in words how some of the other points are reminisced with Jill

@@alfalfa_art I hope they also made few more alters for the system since, just for me, Syo isn't enough to handle all the traumas.

Toko was a mistreated child who just needed love

Why did you not like her in the first game? I loved her from the start

@@starfly7479 hi toko :D
I agree with you on togami. i think one reason why she loves him is because he's honesty and real with her, even if it isn't in a nice sense.
Toko has to be one of the most relatable characters in this series....

Mother of god. I can see why you took so long trying to complete this analysis. I had no idea she had so much depth to character.
In Ultra Despair Girls the parts I enjoyed the most where the discussions Fukawa and Komaru had about manga, light novels and such. I found hers and Komarus opinions fascinating.

The one character I hated on danganronpa 1 but completely fell in love with after playing Ultra Despair Girls

If there are any more signs or symptoms, or I may be off base somewhere, do let me know!
seems like BPD more than PTSD... anyway, this is a great comment
Pretty much same here. At home was pretty bad too. Luckily for me i just stopped caring in general and got used to it.
These comments are old, but I hope you are okay now c:
Same for me but all the racist bullying happened to me in 3rd grade
It’s just a theory, so take it with a grain of salt, but I’m guessing that the reason why Toko hates taking showers is because of her low self esteem making her feel ashamed to even look at her own body.
It's actually because Genocide Jack/Jill cut a tally-mark on her leg for every person she's killed, and Toko hates being reminded of it. She definitely has low self-esteem about her body though.

If Toko ever asks to be treated like dirt or says she's being treated like dirt, put a flower in her hair and wait for her to realize what you meant
And if she doesn't get it, just say you like putting flowers in dirt
Definitely do Hajime next!!! That would be such an interesting video :) Loved this Fukawa character analysis as well!!! I definitely missed this series and I'm glad you're back!
Omg! You made a Toko Fukawa analysis video! Thank you so much! It was amazing and very interesting! I love Toko's character. :3
Maybe they did want her, but were not fit to rsise her.
Maybe themself unstable?-
They could think of that as doing the best for toko when it’s obviously notb
@@matteredits1550 I really doubt trying to drown your child is thinking what's best for them...

4:33 if elementary school is before the age of 5 then-- thats how Genocide jack/Jill happened, cause with D.I.D, you have to have something happen wether it be at age 5 or younger-
also, the reason Toko doesnt shower often, is because when she was younger one of her mothers tried drowning her so she has a fear of water/showeing

Am I the only one who low-key wants to read tokos books-?
I wrote one of the Trivia facts, I'm so happy it got noticed!
I heavily relate to Toko and honestly this video helped me vocalise some of my feelings. Thanks I guess.
Genocider Jill's design reminds me a whole lot on a Japanese Urban Legend, Kuchisake-onna [the slit-mouthed woman]
From the way Jill has her tongue sticking out from her mouth, the fact that she uses scissors. Though I can't explain in words how some of the other points are reminisced with Jill
Yeah!
Whenever I start watching your videos I shout "love you!". I just think you're channel is great
it makes me so sad when people make fun of me for kinning toko... her backstory is so heartbreaking and it reveals a whole different side of her
Heya Weeby!! So happy you finally did Toko!! She is one of my favorite characters and I am so happy you did her!! This was an amazing video and I really enjoyed it!!
Best. Character. Ever.
