    *PLEASE READ*
    Meant to say this in the video. I know a lot of people have VERY different interpretations of this character and most are very passionate about it. But please be civil with each other.
    Anyways hope you guys enjoy the video. At this point I feel good about my interpretation, but I’m not sure I presented the ideas as well as I wanted too. I do want to make it clear that I’m not trying to justify Ouma’s actions at all. I do think he had good intentions but still he was a very selfish character overall. Especially seeing how the whole situation with Gonta played out. I also want to mention that although I don’t think Ouma thought of the others as his close friends, that doesn’t mean I think he didn’t care about them at all. I think he cared about the others on a human level as in he hated seeing them suffer alongside him. But he didn’t want to get too attached since he’s very untrusting along with the other things I mentioned in the video. Because of this he would attempt to stop the killings to an extent, but not fully enough to make himself vulnerable so that it jeopardized his life or final plan. I really think he was only willing to die if he thought it would directly end the killing game. Anyways if I wasn’t clear enough in other parts, then I can make a sequel or respond to any questions you guys have regarding it. Hope you guys enjoy though!

      Weeby Newz After watching the entirety of the video I strongly agree with the entire analysis,.
      I did think his feelings were genuine whenever someone died like Gonta,Rantaro as examples and he used that mask to hide his true feelings to the bitter end.
      The relationship video you discuss I somewhat want to hear but at the same time it's seems pretty clear cut, Kokichi hates Maki for her talent and thinks Kaito is too good of a person to the point it can harm everyone else including himself because of his true belief and he trusted Shuichi because of his logic and reasoning to find the truth. The the entire dilemma between Kaito and Kokichi is one sides Pure belief which is mortally right but can result in the group doing as the mastermind wants which is to gain hope to fight the dilemma they're in, vs Kokichi pure logic which is the way end the killing game but at the cost of the groups trust and driving them to despair.

    Going back to the whole Kokichi and Kaito parallels, essentially:
    Kaito wants to save everyone by trusting in the good, honesty, and openness within people
    Whereas Kokichi wants to save everyone but knows no one can be trusted to follow through on any of their promises so he has to manipulate them in the right direction behind the shadows at any cost
    DANG

      And both of their beliefs are wrong, unfortunately. Kaito trusting everyone (except Kokichi obv) unabling them to figure out the true mastermind which is very close to them the entire time, while Kokichi's decision to trust nobody and keep on lying to others had ruined his original plan (the one where he tried to usurped the mastermind by 'taking' his role and end the killing game by revealing the mastermind's identity), and ultimately cost his life. He should have find someone to trust to; but then again, it's difficult to do so.
      I think the reason why Shuichi succeed on revealing Tsumugi as the mastermind is because he gave the benefit of doubt on Tsumugi. To doubt is to trust, and neither Kaito or Kokichi did so.

His character has the most depth and turns than any anime character I’ve seen. His twisted logic is so smart and almost like a master mind that it’s hard for me to completely take it all in. Something that could be important is Ouma's small stature. He doesn't look very intimidating, and if his past had potential threat to his safety such as living on the streets, he could've exaggerated his talent and DICE to protect himself. If lying was a defense mechanism he used to cope through childhood, it makes sense that Ouma would rely on deception so heavily

      Let's not talk about that revelation from chapter 6 please... anyways, I imagine an offscreen scene between Kokichi and Monokuma as he's setting up the exisals to orbit Monokuma after he reveals the despairing truth about the outside world. Assuming Kokichi caught on to Monokuma's desire to induce despair, he could mockingly claim to do Monokuma a favor in a conversation like this: K: "Don't be angry at me. This is an apology for the last trial being boring!" M: "How is this an apology!?" K: "I can tell that your objective is to induce despair on everyone, so by revealing the outside world to everyone, I've plunged them all into the depths of despair! And now, someone (or everyone) will kill themselves or kill someone else because they lost all hope and reason to escape!" M: "Ok look... I do want to inflict despair, but not like this! This is boring! You're making the game BORING!" K: "As long as there is despair, you can't possibly get bored right? Someone like you... can never get bored of despair. Well, good night Monokuma!" *Walks away with an evil laugh* M: "Hey! Come back here right now! You'll pay for this Kokichi! You'll pay for turning my despair against me! *Graaaar!*" Basically, Kokichi revealing the truth of the outside world might have created a despair that isn't fun for sadists in chapter 5. Instead, that despair is designed for ruin and discouragement (ruin the killing game to discourage people from enjoying it).

I feel like because of this, Kokichi knew everyone would still see him as the monster he tricked them into believing he was.

  • @NotAGoodUsername360
    @NotAGoodUsername360 6 років тому +2866

    Kokichi always did strike me as a character that was constantly covering up his own insecurities under a mountain of lies so nobody could realize when he's genuinely hurting. It makes sense that he's constantly getting reinforced for lying every time his weakness is mistaken for a ploy, even when if you closely look at the changes in Kokichi's behavior in every case you do notice a genuinely disturbing downward spiral that everyone except Kaito is completely oblivious to.
    It is interesting that Kokichi's character arc is clearly a downward spiral as his lies corner him into a position where he feels forced to instigate murder and when Gonta is unwittingly robbed of his memories (and therefore his guilt) Kokichi seems genuinely disturbed for a while before retreating back into his cold mentality.
    I just love how the way Kokichi's lines following Gonta's execution ambiguously sound like they could indeed be malevolent and deceptive... or broken, traumatized denial.

    • @NotAGoodUsername360
      @NotAGoodUsername360 6 років тому +209

      Kari's Small World Every chapter has at least one major milestone:
      Chapter 1: Kaede's death (as pointed out in video)
      Chapter 2: Failure of the Insect Meet And Greet scheme to make everyone watch the Motive videos (which the trial eventually reveals that it ultimately lead to a murder taking place). It's the first time Kokichi tries to take control of the situation, and it blows up horrifically in his face. I'm not sure if he realized what Kirumi had done when he held her up after the murder, but it seems likely. He does, after all, go out of his way to torment Kirumi at the end of the class trial by exposing her attempt to manipulate the class. That makes sense if Kokichi hated Kirumi for ruining his attempt to take control. This is also when he exposes Maki to the group at the risk of his own life just to gain some semblance of control.
      Chapter 3: Kokichi makes a more concerted effort towards Tenko's murder than Angie's (which makes sense, seeing as Angie was another obstacle to his taking control of the game). He does seem to suspect Kiyo of having ill intent and volunteers for the séance pretty quickly. When Tenko is literally murdered right in front of him, he once again loses control and investigates pretty intensely after that. He must've been running pretty fast to have split his forehead open when he stepped and tripped on Kiyo's backup seesaw, after all.
      And then Chapter 4 and 5 have the most obvious turning points.
      There's also the progression of Kokichi's malevolent expressions that reflect his increasing insanity and desperation for control over the course of the game, culminating in that haunting dead-eyed, painted-on grin he gives after finally pulling off his hijacking of the game and claiming to be the mastermind.

    I did like Kokichi a whole lot more than Nagito. Especially when Gonta was about to die and he volunteered to be executed as well to make Gonta feel better. Nagito was out right cruel to the person that he incited to murder. When Teruteru was about to die, he was like “Oh you will be a perfect sacrifice to bring salvation and glory to all of us who will get to live and grow old and do all of the things that you will never be able to do.” So I like how Kokichi at least hid his malicious side from Gonta before he died as way of apologizing of sorts (maybe).

    I feel like insanely complicated characters (like Kokichi and Nagito) are such a double-edged sword in the Dangaronpa fandom. Some absolutely hate them, and some absolutely love them. I personally think that characters like these are really make these games so good and special. Danganronpa has some of the most unique and complicated characters I've ever seen. I really love how multi-layered your analysis videos are, and they really help people to understand these characters and their real motivations better. I have to disagree about Kokichi not wanting any friends. I believe that he cared a lot about Gonta. Unlike him Gonta is very trusting and kind. The complete opposite of his facade. However this is most likely what he wants to be. I believe that his teasing to Gonta is his way of being jealous. However I believe that he cares a lot about Gonta. This is proven when he momentarily stops doing his villain persona when he says something roughly like, “you all probably think it should have been me huh. Everyone hates me. So the role of villain is perfect for me.” Another quote is when he says to Gonta, “ wait if he is gonna die then I want to too. I prepared for it, I-.” And “ Gonta! You can’t leave me too.” But then agian this is just my opinion.

      I read off his page and it said he really did care a lot about Gonta. He didn’t want Gonta to be executed. After Gonta’s execution (I think), you know how he started acting all evil and twisted again? He felt a rush of anger and guilt in him that caused him to lose parts of his sanity, making him act like himself again. Because of that, he lied about fake crying or that he didn’t care about Gonta, when in reality, Kokichi actually cared so much about Gonta.

      The killing game put so much mental stress in him that his worst was forced out. He was most likely simply a lying prankster - probably someone boring without a true "identity" to make him interesting (quote “At least I wasn’t boring, right?”) - outside of the killing game, but the emotional torture combined with his flaws of selfishness (debatable?) and distrust led to his breaking point. He wanted to end the games, and he deduced the possibility (and then existence) of an audience by seeing through the lies of the Flashback Lights, so he did it by doing the thing he does best: piss people off (the hypothetical audience and the masterminds of Team Danganronpa) and push them away from him. He stooped down to the level of Monokuma to beat him, through the same tactics of manipulation and deception and then, killing.
      Imagine if he lived to Chapter 6. Imagine if he was there during the big reveal. He'd LOSE HIS SHIT TO THE POINT OF INSANITY. He'd be forced to reflect on his actions - the same actions that were as fictional as he really was, bound to a tight script made by Ultimate Real Fiction for entertainment. His fears of an audience would be realized, and in the end, even "Kokichi Ouma" was a lie after all.
      Poor guy. His actions were insane and horrible, but I can't 100% just blame him. He should be in therapy, not in a fucking murder game.

    1. ouma is very untrusting, so he uses lies to keep others at bay. the reason he’s so interested in saihara is because he’s the only person who’s gotten close to figuring him out. i mean, he busted his head open and passed it off as a joke to hide his vulnerability
    2. he may have enjoyed the trials, but he despised the killing game. he pushed everyone away to make it easier to end it, willing to let his own life end. unlike kaede, who was willing to end someone ELSE’s life outright (as he had gonta kill iruma because he thought he didn’t have another choice)
    3. he’s smart: really smart. he figured things out no one else could or figured them out sooner, but didn’t use this against the other super high school levels
    4. all in all, he’s just a vulnerable kid with severe trust issues. he’s selfish and doesn’t always go about things the right way but he’s not a bad person in the end. not really the same but you can compare him to gundham: they both had villain personas despite their true natures. these kids have all been through a lot. he’s an incredible character and i love him a lot for it. 1. I think the reason he's so interested in Shuichi was because he was strong enough to push his emotions aside to find the truth, which is something he goes on about constantly
      2. Kaede was actually willing to kill the mastermind and once she realized it was Rantarou she *KILLED* she decided to participate in the class trial, both to give everyone the courage to move on and reveal the mastermind. Pretty selfless if you ask me

    This detail may not be all that significant, but the thing that made me start to question whether or not Kokichi was truly evil was when he got Himiko to express her emotions. After the trial where Angie and Tenko died, he talked about how he hated liars and noted that Himiko was bottling up her emotions, which inevitably led to her breaking down and crying for the first time. While he did do it in a way that seemed mean-spirited, it would be hard to fathom why he would even go out of his way to get her to express herself and stop bottling up her emotions. It was my interpretation that this was his way of helping Himiko while also keeping up with his villain persona.

    On the topic of the 人にやらされるゲーム line, the sentence is frustratingly vague in Japanese BECAUSE it can be taken both ways without a kanji there to help clarify the verb, which I think was the point in the Japanese script :
    1)人に やらされる [people are made to do] + ゲーム[game] = a game people are forced into (assuming this is the standard する version of やる)
    OR
    2) 人に殺らされる [people are made to kill] + ゲーム [game] = a game where people are made to kill (assuming it's 殺る)
    But regardless, this one moment wouldn't have really been an issue on its own. Translation and localization is VERY difficult, and I am the first person to come to the defense of translators who try to localize text to better help Western audiences understand the story, even if it means adopting tones and taking liberties with how lines are translated. However, the point of localization is to translate the IDEA, and in this case I think NISA's translators could have done a bit better at times.
    In my opinion (as someone who played it in early 2017 in Japanese and was rooting for NISA's translation) the English translation didn't seem to have a clear idea in how they wanted to characterize Ouma, or how they wanted other characters to react to him. The fact that fans have such polarized opinions of him only speaks to that idea more. There were multiple instances in the English script that overemphasized the villainous/childish side of Ouma to the detriment of the more ambiguous aspects of his character. To go back to the chapter 5 flashback scenes, the thing that bothered me wasn't the lack of a strict adherence to direct translation, but the TONE that the dialogue took at times. In the Japanese version, when Momota is recounting what happened, he shows far more conviction in trusting Ouma. In the English version, he comes off as more flippant, rude, and unsure about their partnership. The English script has Momota insult Ouma on several occasions that have no basis in the original script (ie. あいつはそんな生易しいヤツじゃねーよ/"He's not the kinda guy to let me off so easily" vs "It was kind of hard to ignore such an annoying guy" OR あいつは筋金入りの嘘つきだったぜ/"He was a staunch liar" vs "He was a lying sack of shit" LIKE?? WHAT???) When characters take such drastic tones, it will no doubt color the players' views as well. A good story does this purposefully, and it was absolutely the original script's intention to fake the player out about Ouma's true intentions. I just wish the English translation hadn't taken such harsh translation liberties that might have lead players too far away from those intentions.
    Ouma's not a purely good or evil character, and his gray morality is a strength to his character and to the story as a whole. His role as the sort of "background deuteragonist" could have been better supported in NISA's translation, so while I don't HATE it, I am disappointed by several of the choices they took. However, I still fully appreciate NISA's commitment to bringing the game overseas, since I think it's the strongest one in the series and I would have been devastated if non-Japanese speakers hadn't been able to play it as well!

    • @cyclone-studio18

      Wow, the English translation took a much harsher approach, I wonder why. They could’ve taken the ambiguous approach that it was originally but it didn’t, which makes me mad. Personally, when characters are more ambiguous, they’re more open-ended and mysterious, which makes the character more fun since you can take creative liberties and form theories of your own on how they really are on the inside. Hhh I really want to learn japanese now tbh so I can understand all the dialogue and all the ambiguous parts of his personality

I loved how you compared and contrasted Kokichi and Kaito and their views of one another as well, their directly contrasting personalities is what really made both the fourth trial and their dynamic as enemies so entertaining to watch, both for giggles and for how far they're willing to go to prove each other wrong.
    Beautiful stuff here. If I had to suggest another character for analysis, Rantaro and Tsumugi are immediately the ones that come to mind for obvious reasons. But, if I were to recommend something simply based on how much I like them a Miu or Keebo analysis would be amazing.

    I agree with almost absolutely everything you said.
    Except for the one word you used to describe Ouma a few times.
    *Selfish*.
    Now, I understand why you might have believed this. After all, many of his plan and goals looped back to one thing- himself.
    But I feel like in some places, instead of saying “selfish”, the more accurate description would be “vain.”
    Ouma wasn’t selfish, to me. He did what he did because he was opposed to murder, which implies he either believes human life to be precious, or something like that. If he was selfish, he would have tried to end the killing game purely for his own safety.
    But vanity, a faith so strong in one’s own skills and talent, explains perfectly why Ouma did everything by himself, along with his trust issues. He might have learnt to trust someone, anyone, but his firm belief that only *he* had the ability to end the killing game cemented his lonely yet efficient plan. This also explains how someone so untrusting could think of Saihara as maybe a trustworthy person. He noticed Saihara was able to do the same thing as him without lying, and figured he might be smart enough to trust.
    But Ouma believed Saihara couldn’t help with the plan, on the sole basis that he could accomplish the plan better himself.
    I’m tired, so my logic isn’t very good, but long story short,,,,,, he isn’t selfish, he’s more vain imo. Idk just a thought-

      Kokichi's ultimate plan was to make everyone in this 'incompetent' group to depend on Shuichi. Once he confirmed it in ch4, he would kidnap Shuichi's best friend Kaito to lure him into a situation where he is forced to assist Kokichi. Shuichi would kill Kokichi and have Kaito spout his 'Power of Trust and Friendship' bullshit to have himself be voted instead of Shuichi "who is obviously not capable of murder".

    I think you're right about Kokichi's fear of Kaito's influence. Shuichi had planned to stop the killing game in chapter 1 and in chapter 6. Both times either he wasn't friends with Kaito or Kaito was dead while in between the two chapters he got comfortable and not as "agressive" or as hard worker.
    It is also interesting that the only ones who actually had plans to stop the killing game were Kokichi, Kaede, Shuichi (chapter 1 and 6), and Angie. Kaito didn't actually had a plan except to fight them.
    Angie was also interesting since if she had her way, the mastermind would of actually had to get involved. She already had a influence. Which is why my theory of one of the reasons Tsumugi became part of Angie's gang was to watch over her just in case.

    • @anjubatus
      @anjubatus 6 років тому +28

      Another character that also had plans to end the killing game was Rantaro. Kaito and Gonta(when he suggested himself fighting the exisals) and even Kiibo(when he tried to blow up the school) did want to try to stop the game as well, they're just not the biggest brainiacs out there so they wanted to go about it their own way (physical fighting). I think it's actually pretty cool how many characters there are in this particular game who had their own ways to try to break the killing game compared to the previous games. Even Monodam rebels and takes control of the game for a while.
      ...Another interesting thing about all these characters is that they all died within the same chapter they started rebelling or put their plans into action, the only exception being Shuichi...

    • @lunavioleta001

      @anjubatus 6 років тому +12

      Yeah, they didn't have amazing well-thought-out strategic plans on how to stop the game, but they still wanted to attempt it anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Physical strength and brute force IS one way to do it, even if it's not always the most effective one (Kiibo might have succeeded if he kept going, even if it meant sacrificing the others as well) not arguing with you or anything though, i've just liked to think about how many different characters have tried to put a stop to the game or tried to take control over it in this one. Oh and with Gonta I meant when he was suggesting using himself as meat-shield and fighting the exisals at the start of the fourth chapter.

    • @lunavioleta001
      @lunavioleta001 6 років тому +5

      SebisTheCat But I did not said characters who wanted to stop the killing game. I said characters who planned to stop the killing game. There is a difference. Kaito, Gonta, and Keeboy didn't planned. The three of them were sorely influence by emotions and nothing more. It was really disappointing that Shuichi didn't planned anything in chapter 5 and just followed Kaito. In the first game, only Kirigiri had any plans. In the second game, nobody had anything unless if count Nagito in chapter 5. So it's interesting that in this game there were more players and less characters who are just there or only there to kill or be killed.

    • @anjubatus
      @anjubatus 6 років тому +4

      yeah, I totally agree it's pretty interesting that we had more characters this time around who really tried their best to beat the game instead of the other characters. Though... I do still think you shouldn't dismiss the characters who didn't have any long-term plans as just other characters to kill or be killed (though some of them were). After all this game isn't exactly chess or anything (they're not in a virtual reality world like last time so strategy isn't the only option anymore) so there is definitely room for more spontaneous/opportunistic players who instead of crafting well-though out plans thorough the game would rather jump at chances to do it in a way that they excel at. I don't think their plans were necessarily emotion-driven either since they seemed to have pretty clear goals and/or motives in mind when they attempted it (or wanted to attempt it)...but yeah.

    Kodaka has also explained some things about him, like his character having a major focus on duality and that Kodaka apparently put more thought into Kokichi than any other character (because of the liar theme). He also explained that his first name "small luck" is meant to sound very humble and small, while his surname "king horse" is all grand and pompous. Kokichi's Japanese voice actor believes that Kokichi is actually really meek if you take away his strong wish to outwit everyone.
    While it's really not that noteworthy, I personally find his horse theme a pretty fun little trait, and some people don't seem to know it's a thing and don't understand the crowned horse mask in his room nor what his laugh refers to.

    I mostly do agree with this, but I may differ a little on how I interpret his selfishness. I do think he is selfish in some ways, such as justifying his ill actions or sacrificing other lives over his, but I believe the latter is only really because of their situation. I think he values his life far above most of the other student's because, like you said, he thinks that he has the best chance of stopping the killing game. Outside of these conditions, I think he'd be more concerned with other people's lives than he lets on. However, I am a little biased so who knows, heh. Aside from my terrible arguments, great analysis! I just want to give my misunderstood and needs-another-chance-or-a-few child a big hug because he's a little shit and I love him 😅

      I believe Kokichi felt ashamed of setting Miu and Gonta up to die. But I imagine this was his reasoning: If the killing games did end because the audience feels a despair of having their favorite show get ruined, then no more young adults/teens would be victims of the sadism the games put them through, because Monokuma wouldn't take any potential survivors, which would be hiding in undiscovered shelters (underground, in space stations, on moon, etc.), as coerced participants. If, for example, people die meaningless/boring deaths (i.e.: if Maki followed through with her word to make Himiko die painlessly, and did it in front of the others) the class trials could be short and boring because the players know from the start who the blackened is, so little to no verbal conflict will occur for the sadists to watch. Kokichi may value his life above other lives, but I wanna believe that he does show concern for their lives in a unusual (and probably twisted) way, like... if he thinks that it's better for people to die meaningless deaths (literally speaking, it could mean "meaningless to sadists because of how boring they are") than for them to be continuously taken from hidden shelters and being subjected to sadists. And in case you're wondering about the "continuously" part, I believe that if Kokichi believes death games are what people like, and if there are more survivors than what the flashback lights let on, this death game won't be the last if it doesn't end here, as far as he's concerned.

    (WARNING: IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE ENDING OF THE GAME, THIS WILL SHOW SOME SPOILERS)
    | Sorry for bad spelling | P.S: This comment is long, it might take you a minute or more to complete reading it. :)
    Kokchi does have a bad personality, but. In Weeby Newz pinned comment, where it states: "although I don’t think Ouma thought of the others as his close friends, that doesn’t mean I think he didn’t care about them at all. I think he cared about the others on a human level as in he hated seeing them suffer alongside him. But he didn’t want to get too attached since he’s very untrusting along with the other things" I HIGHLY agree, because he does not want to be too attached with them, also. If you saw his motive video, it states he had 10 loyal people working for him, and how he saw them as a family to him, (or very close friends), but then, something bad happened to them. This must of made Kokichi heartbroken, you probably would if someone you were very close to died, or got kidnapped, or other bad stuff, you would be heartbroken like Kokichi. As you can see, (or read since you're reading this comment), Kokichi has a script where he has a sad past. Kokichi did suffer along with other people that he called "friends", Kokichi has been suffering too, and since he's a liar, he would probably lie about the "more you suffer, the more I enjoy it" part. Kokichi could be one of those people, he is very "kind", likes to play "games", "jokes" around with others, but his other side is pure evil, like he's a very insane person. I noticed that NO ONE made comments about his motive video that shows he had very close friends and something very bad happened to him. I felt like when Maki and Shuichi saw his motive video, they did NOT care about his dark past that was scripted for his character, even when Kokichi dies, they still didn't seem like they cared at all, and they still thought he was a liar when he said his dying words, and how he "tricked" Kaito into doing his plan to end the killing game. Also, I believe Kokichi DOES care about the others, but does not tend to show it, what I mean is (this is a theory)…: Kokichi did not want the other people to die like his very close friends (if his close friends died), he didn't like seeing them suffer, so it was probably a lie when he said "The more you suffer, the more I enjoy it", because he wanted to END the killing game because he could not stand the fact that he would see people be killed, and then another person get killed at the class trials. So, it would be 2 people he would watch get taken every time. So, Kokichi wanted to stop it so the remaining people could survive and continue their lives. He is actually willing to do it, even if it meant killing himself and not surviving with the others. My theory might prove he cares about the others. You do not have to agree with me, but this shows that Kokichi is not that evil even though it seems like it. | P.S: Thank you for reading all this.

    Ouma is such a good character, and it's so impressive to see a 'love to hate' character who's still (arguably) a good person deep down. I wound up being really attached to him by the end of the game, partly because of how his character was presented, but also because he's made me start to work through my own deep seated trust issues and compulsive lying. This video was seriously phenomenal, thank you so much for all the effort you put into your analysis videos; it really shows, especially here.
    Also, if you're taking suggestions for the next analysis, a video on Rantaro would be awesome! He doesn't get anywhere near enough love from the game, but with the small amount of screen time he gets in the main story, as well as the scenes from Salmon Team and the love hotel, I ended up really loving his character. Plus he's really pretty, so that helps. Oh, and a Himiko video would be a lot of fun too. Now that I think about it, you really can't go wrong with V3's cast, can you? lol
    Also also, are you at all familiar with the plot of DDLC? I feel like it'd be kinda impossible not to be spoiled on it by now, and I think a series where somebody already knows what's going on could be really fun. Can't wait for the series ^.^

      I always thought it was more a way to humiliate him. Like he builds himself up to everyone else to be the Ultimate Supreme Leader who has control of an organization that controls the entire world, but in "reality" he's just... what? A pathetic prankster who's pretending to be more than he ever could, and if it ever got out no one would ever take him seriously, because the thing about his lie about DICE is that it works because you're unsure if it's true. Like you know he has to be lying... but is he? If that motive video got out, he'd be humiliated. He didn't know this at the start and probably only remembered DICE's true nature after he watched the video, so he was basically cut down to size quite badly.
      However, I do think it's interesting that he leaves it lying out in the open for someone to find after his death.

    I feel like Ouma didn’t really like the others as friends like you said, but he did acknowledge that they are (or were) living beings. I really think he has respect for the lives of others, maybe even a bit more than others that were in the game (like Miu and Kiyo). This kids leads me to believe that his “past” may have had an incident that caused him to view life and the lives of others highly.

    Some people have said he asked to be punished with Gonta cuz he meant it. Honestly, I think he knew Monokuma wouldn't allow someone who isn't "blackened" to be punished as Monokuma said "only the one who commits murder is blackened." He might've cared though. I mean his fake crying looked childish and all "WAHHH!: and dramatic. But during Gonta and his last words, his crying expression changed to something that looked a lot more serious and genuine. (can't confirm for real/only speculation.)
    Same with his last words
    Personally though? I do think he did care for Gonta to some extent though and felt bad about using him. The point of Kokichi was that we never understood him or his true intentions in the end. I believe there is no proper answer but rather an open analysis. There has been some debate as to whether what he did was justified or not(personnally...no), whether he was really evil or not, or whether he really cared or not. I personally think that it's up to the player/audience. The themes of DR3 have been focused on belief, and truth vs lies. Rather than hope and despair. That's why I found Kokichi and Kaito one of the most important characters. They both had different ideals. "Don't trust everyone, they will betray you in the end." and "Believe in them, it's your own choice and fault for believing in them if they end up betraying you." Kokichi was cautious of Monokuma and SEEMED to be keeping up an act, but also told many lies (maybe because he couldn't trust others himself) While Kaito was pretty naive (though it worked out pretty well) and wanted to believe in his friends.
    When Shuichi says "You'll always be alone/Kaito has us" it honestly hurt me. I think the writers only made him say that to imply that Kokichi might've genuinely cared.(I mean it's not something Shuichi would normally say, nor does it fit how he would've responded to Kokichi." Honestly? If he wanted to win the game truly? I don't think he would've killed himself. (again this is only speculation) And keep in mind that he probably planned ahead(though they say he thought of it on the spot) Like, I mean honestly he was dying from the poison!! He wouldn't have enough time to write a whole damn script for Kaito. And why would he have a camera? (maybe he was planning on asking someone else, or doing it himself) I think that the game (in a way) is testing our ideals. He truly did seem to be 5 steps ahead, but at the same time Monokuma in every game has always been 10 steps ahead. Are we gonna have Kaito's ideals and choose to believe Kokichi's last words? (Though Kaito contradicts himself as he doesn't believe Kokichi... but understandable) or are we gonna have Kokichi's ideals and say his last words are a lie? I mean honestly though. He was gonna die. He didn't even know what the Remnants of Despair were! (I'm pretty sure he wasn't lying, it's implied the Monokuma gave the flashback light to the survivors(Maki, for her to kill Kokichi).
    He never actually killed anyone. They said he caused deaths of 3 innocent ppl. I agree that was horrible, but am refuting the innocent part. Miu planned to kill first, Gonta chose to kill(although his death personally might've been mostly Kokichi which made me hate him for a short while), and Kaito chose to cooperate and if Kokichi's planned worked Kaito wouldn't have died not to mention he was on death's door anyway. (But he knew Shuichi was smart as he seemed to test him in Gonta's trial, and he always seemed to predict right so maybe he knew his plan might not work)
    I don't think he really would've had anything to gain by lying in those dying words. No matter who you are, when you're near death, you USUALLY reveal your true self. I have so much more to say about this as there are other implications he was genuine and others he was not. Not to mention Kokichi died alone and untrusted, while Nagito got his comeback (anime spoilers: he was revived, and everyone forgave him) But of course, I believed that Kokichi's character was truly an enigma and another unsolved mystery left open to our speculation. Which is what I love about his character. But of course if I was in the game or he was a person in real life I probably would've punched him in the face. Woah this is a lot phew sorry.

    I need a sequel, this was a very well done vid and i'd love to hear more :3
    I love that you pointed out the subtle differences in his villain act and his mindset throughout the game because it's hard to catch all of that while you're playing.
    It's nice to hear someone talking about Ouma and doesn't demonize him. (Or adore him no matter what) Since, i've seen this clouding other people's perception of him. People often use the 4th trial to dismiss any good will he might have had for the group. Or use the fifth trial to say he did nothing wrong.
    I felt the same way about the 4th trial, when he started yelling at Gonta, i think he was actually frustrated with the situation he had created because it felt so out of character for him to be causing this much distress to people. Since he only does pranks, not actual harm that would crush someone's life like in the 4th trial.
    About the motive videos. I kind of agree but i think Ouma wanted them to see the motives to perhaps ease the tension in the group as well. Because when there are secrets, people are on edge the whole time and that could cause a murder out of fear of their motive being found out (like in the first game) so it would be easier to just show everyone the motives so there's no fear. That's just my guess 😅
    Another thing, i think the third trial was pretty telling too. He seemed concerned about Himiko holding back her emotions so he called her out on it. But of course he did it in a way that made him look really inconsiderate. My guess is that he really didn't want to show any kind of genuine vulnerability but still wanted to make his worries heard.
    Hope this isn't too long, it's always 4am here for the uploads so i might sound confusing xD

    Definitely a great analysis, I can see the amount of effort you put into this. ~
    I personally have the feeling that Kokichi a lot of times also actually would've wished for someone to actually understand his real intentions but at the same time was really scared of the same thing happening, henche why he has such a complicated relationship with Shuichi of whom he would've wanted to see through him but who never really understood him to the end.
    Also I think that at times he intentionally used these overdoing of emotional outbursts so that people clearly notice that he's just acting. He wanted to be seen as lying even when he wasn't. Sorta in a way of 'double lying'. I noticed these things a lot. For example after Rantaros death: His initial reaction to Rantaros death was him being really shocked but right in the middle of him stammering about how he cannot believe it, he switches to his 'villain' persona and starts loudly screaming out how he was sad that Rantaro got killed, bursting in tears making it really clear to everyone that he's just exaggerating and not taking this serious. So he's literally covering up that he cares by 'acting that he cares in a way that could only be interpretated as fake' which is something I find really curious when it comes to him.

    I noticed something and it's been bugging me. The game makes it very very very clear Kokichi has three electrobombs. Maki steals one and uses it to get into the hanger and Kokichi uses one to disable the safety and cameras in the hanger. Thats one missing bomb. The bomb isn't in his pocket or his room. It obviously isn't in his lab and I'm pretty sure he didn't take it out of his pocket to die with the bomb. Once again Kokichi makes it clear he has THREE bombs. I want to know where it or what he used it on.
    Note; This is just me grasping for ways he could be alive because he's my favourite but actually that bomb could tie into a way he could still be alive. He is known for being amazing at hiding and if he had that bomb he could hide from all camera's. We never actually see Kokichi's corpse or him on the press just a lot of splatter from what could be paint. Thiss is just me hoping for the better, I know that chance is near 0 D: But still, where did the bomb go.

    I was just thinking abt this line the other day. You know how he says “I want to win this killing game even if it means dying myself”? Well technically that would make him less likely to kill someone. Because if he had killed someone he would’ve been executed and therefore would’ve lost. Ouma is smart. He was onto the ‘we are being filmed’ thing early on. So he would’ve known better than to kill others. Yes, he was selfish and used Gonta to kill Miu. He wanted to win but knew the game would continue if he were to be executed. (I’m not super smart, so if some of this doesn’t make sense pls let me know ^^)

    Great analysis Weeby! I never understood why Ouma wanted everyone to watch all the motive videos (his included) if he was so fixed on keeping on that evil/villian persona. Because if you think about it, if he and Gonta actually succeeded at gathering everyone together to watch the motive videos he would've had to showed his as well, and since his motive video states that his whole "Evil Supreme Leader" act is all fake why would he want to show it? My best guess is the group would want to see his motive video too (especially Saihara who I feel would be very curious). And I feel like they (the group) wouldn't let Ouma trick or lie his way out of not showing it to them, I mean if everyone is showing their motive video he should too right. Yet he still got Gonta to capture everyone so that they could all watch the motives. Idk just a thought.

    That was an amazing analysis! I appreciate how you fairly went over and debunked the criticism on that line - my Japanese isn't amazing but it seems clear to me that the person was pushing their own agenda rather than trying to provide an unbiased translation (the verb is pretty vague as you pointed out). I'm guessing the removal of the 'no-killing' policy in the motive video was a mistake on NISA's part, especially since it's explicitly mentioned in the trial as if the motive video had said that.
    Anyway, it's nice to see that you looked at both Oma's selfish (perhaps even arrogant) side, and his good intentions. I'm getting tired of people painting him as a pure cinnamon roll or a chaotic evil villain, he's a much more complex character than that. I never really could piece together why he acted the way he did in Trial 4 when he was partially to blame, so your analysis helped me understand that, thanks.
    I'd love to see a sequel on his relationships, since you did a pretty good job covering them even if it was brief. They might be more clear-cut than his motives/true thoughts, but they're still equally fascinating imo. There's a lot of really interesting characters in V3 to analyse, but the ones I'd personally like to see an analysis on are Tsumugi (I feel like her true persona shares a lot of similarities with her cosplayer/otaku persona, just far more extreme), Kaito (an excellent foil to Oma with very different flaws and strengths) and Korekiyo (very twisted, but also pure in how he still sees the rest of the cast as friends and doesn't see anything wrong with his beliefs and mindset).

    I'm watching this late 4 years later but one thing not mentioned is at the beginning of trial 4 (I think Gonta's trial) Oma asks Monokuma what will happen if the vote results in a tie and Monokuma says if that happens as long as one of them is right they are both the blackened, it's fine, whatever. So Oma was entering the trial with the hope that he could convince them to tie vote him and Gonta which was his plan and punish both of them. So his real wish was that he would have been punished in trial 4 but Monokuma went back on his words and only punished Gonta, causing Oma to cry...
    This is further supported by the fact that Oma pretty much killed himself in saving Kaito's life, where Kaito still had something to live for no matter how short of a life it was (going to space), Oma felt like he had nothing to live for, he had lost Gonta and lost his DICE followers (if they were even real). Even if the world still existed/ there were survivors as he suspected, he STILL gave up his life to get closer to defeating the mastermind.
    Oma was Chaotic Good alignment all along, not evil, and all of his lies had good intentions.

    I never believed the whole "in the Japanese version he said this" for just one reason.
    Who's more likely to make a mistake? One person on the internet who _might_ know Japanese, or a team of four professional translators?

      The misspellings are far more likely the result of a rushed production schedule than incompetent translators.
      The thing is that something similar to this happened in SDR2 with Komaeda's "mistranslated" confession, but there are a bunch of differences between that situation and this one.
      In this one, the _only_ source I could find was one tumblr post. One. Where as in Komaeda's case, multiple sources confirmed that he was about to say aisheteru. Multiple sources confirmed how strong the connotation was for that word. Plus, in that case, I still felt what the translators said was a fairly good translation, if mostly because there isn't a good equivalent to what he said in English.
      In other words, while you're correct that this happens in other games, I agree with logic seeker in this case.

    • @fragilebunny
      @fragilebunny 6 років тому +47

      The problem with that specific sentence is because the verb "yaru" in question has a wide range of meanings which differ from meaning "to do something" to "have sex" and "to kill". It is pretty vague and therefore several translations could pop up.

    • @ElaGTheBoss
      @ElaGTheBoss 6 років тому +36

      Well, one of the problems with translation is that, especially with languages with Japanese where meanings are more ambiguous and most things don't translate directly into English, a lot of liberties are taken to make the meaning make sense to an English audience. A lot of the times, lines are changed deliberately to something completely different, to keep the same vibes that the original line would have in Japanese and sound natural and fluid to an English speaker. That's why some lines are translated into English by official translators a lot less literally than some random person on the internet would.

    • @lucaslacerda9175

      Wait a bit there. There's a reason why corrections about what was said make sense.
      All translation work, when dealing with games and movies, needs to be localised. This means that we need to keep the overall meaning of it, but change the words so it makes sense for the cultural context of the destination area.
      Many expressions have a LOT of nuance. If you say the phrase "I was so eager to cut you off" after cutting a character's head, for example, this can mean two things: a metaphorical meaning (as in "I was eager to not talk to you anymore") and a literal meaning (as in "I was eager to splice your head from your body"). This would be untranslatable inside a game, because writing an explanatory phrase ("I was eager to never talk to you anymore by severing your head") would 1 - sound unnatural; 2 - miss the wordplay; 3 - deviate from the original intention of the writer.
      This is why many people rectify translations. Outside of the game, the original idea can be better explained without the constraints of the game media.

    I've always wondered if Kokichi knew more than he let on. The example I often think about is after Shuichi left the Virtual World after rejecting Kokichi's offer to be partners. Kokichi commented "out loud" that he wouldn't give up so easily. He would've had no reason to say that out loud, especially if he thought they were being watched. So maybe he was trying to protect himself by making himself "interesting" to the audience. TV shows doesn't usually kill the fan favorites, right?
    I also wonder if Kokichi suspected his memories had been tampered with. Since he knew Monokuma's actions didn't match the memories from the Flashback Lights, I wonder if he began to suspect his own memories which would've added to his paranoia and unwillingness to trust other people.

    For such a different and in-depth character, you did an AMAZING job with truly going into depth with Ouma (especially for not showing any/a lot personal bias to sway your audience one way or the other like some users do unfortunately). Outstanding!!
    If you are taking any more suggestions on V3 characters to analyze, may I suggest Rantaro as we don’t learn a whole lot about him until the very end of the game.

    Can we have an o7 for Kokichi? He was shot in the back by a poison tipped arrow, shot in the arm with a normal arrow, nearly strangled twice, stepped through a floorboard, potentially felt mad after Gonta was executed, as he probably felt guilty for all of it, punched twice, nobody believed him, even when sometimes he was genuinely telling the truth, hitting his head, nearly fainting from blood loss, trust issues, etc.
    He needs a hug.
    Someone give him a hug.
    But hate him or not, we all have to admit two things.
    He didn’t deserve it.
    And.
    He rlly did done pack a punch when he done punched Kaito

  • @ignyscos2014

    Another thing that could be noted is how everyone in the class since the beginning never gave him a chance or trusted him. In chapter 1, Tenko beat him down with calling him selfish when he was genuinely caring for the others. He wanted everyone to stop getting hurt due to Kaede’s escape plan in the Death Road of Despair. He was *immediately* accused of actually wanting to start the killing game. Soon, after time and time again of being outcasted(which was probably a bit triggering for him depending on his background and with his trust issues, etc.) he melded into what his fellow victims wanted, a villain. P.S. when Kokichi did injure himself, it showed how much the class didn’t care to help him. Sure, Shuichi realized that he was hurt, but no one ever offered to help him wash up or anything. Which furthers the neglect and outcasting from the others. That’s all I had to say!

  • @ellias5820

    Ey, Weeby! Great video as always. So about that one part in the fourth trial, I have this particular thought in mind. So, with Ouma's trust issues, he doesn't know of Gonta's memory loss hence, Gonta's denial of his crime prolly made Ouma feel betrayed that's why he's so angry that he felt the need to shout and, just as you mentioned, make Gonta admit to his crime so that all the guilt won't crush him.
    Also, I'd like to mention how in the start of the fourth trial, he asks Monokuma what happens if the voting ends up with two blackened to which Monokuma responds to the both of them getting executed as long as one is right makes me think that Ouma was prepared to get executed alongside Gonta, (split votes possible with the survivors being: Saihara, Yumeno, Harukawa, Momota, Kiibo, Shirogane, Gonta and Ouma) after all, his theory of them being watched was already confirmed and he left preparations and all after he dies.
    Again, that's just a thought.
