    This is part 1 of 6 videos coming where we go through the 2018 USA range. By the way, all Gibson guitars are USA made, but for some reason, the core line of Les Pauls, SGs, Firebirds, Explorers & Vs is always referred to as the USA line. The Memphis range (semi-acoustics), the Montana range (acoustics) & Custom Shop range are all made in the USA, but Gibson just give those ranges different names. Confused - so are we, but its been that way for a long time!
    Rob is playing through a Mesa Boogie Mark V:35 with no pedals & Lee is using a Marshall 2525 Jubilee head & is using a Xotic EP Booster and a Dunlop Mini Wah in the front, and an MXR Carbon Copy & Boss Reverb in the loop.
    Next up is the Les Paul Classic vs the Studio - stay tuned!
    Cheers!

    These guitars are so well made and beautiful. Love my 2018 Trad in honey burst finish. The trad is the real LP imo, based on the very sought after 1959 model. No fluff and gimmicky stuff. No weight relief. Just pure craftsmanship with huge sound and great playability.

    I like where Gibson has gone. I hear people always complaining on the forums. I don't know what they expect Gibson to do? Build a company around your taste specifically? If you want a Traditional LP...here it is. Good as ever...if you want to see where Gibson is going with the modern electronics and tuners...here it is.

    I have the exact 2018 Traditional in this video. I bought it used as the original owner couldn't take the weight of the guitar. I love it, absolutely love it. I have had to do some equalization on my settings to get the right tone out of my setup with the burstbuckers, but once dialed in.... uhmmm delicious sounding. Best hard rock guitar I own and the sustain is RIDICULOUS. Last when sitting on the couch noodling, you can feel every note resonate through that thick solid wood!

    • @wretchedrider2157
      @wretchedrider2157 Рік тому

      I find it hard to believe the neck is on the "thinner side" like they claim in the video. I was seeing nearly 1inch all the way from the 1st to 12th fret for most online sources. What say you, good sir?! Hope you still have it!

    • @davesegal2631
      @davesegal2631 Рік тому

      @@wretchedrider2157 So no I do not feel as it is on the thinner side, though I do have guitars with rounder neck profiles. The feel and grip is amazing so if it is slightly thinner, I do not notice it. It is in my top 2 of guitars and is a main instrument for any gigs. I did replace the neck humbucker as I play heavier rock and metal and the Burstbucker was just too muddy for my liking, even with the volume turned down. So yes I still have it and will likely be buried with it LOL.

    Hi Lee - sorry to hear about the shoulder. I have been suffering the same over the past few months. I may well have caused it with bad guitar playing posture whilst sitting. I ended up visibly bent out of shape with my right shoulder noticeably lower than my left. This led to very bad neuralgia all down my right arm, with intense pain in the arm and numbness in my hand. Playing guitar has become impossible, and driving is very difficult. Anything that involves lifting my forearm, to strum or pick a guitar, or to hold a steering wheel, will bring it on. I had to have an injection in my shoulder to relieve the pain there, just to allow my to sleep, but it did nothing for the neuralgia in the arm. I have had x-rays and extensive ostoepathic treatments, and I still have a long way to go. Don't try to ignore it, and get it properly treated, or it can seriously bugger you up!

    I do like Gibsons, own a Les Paul myself - but here (I'm in Germany), there are luthiers who will build you a carved top single-cut to exactly your specs for 1500 - 2000 €. Of course, if you're into exotic extras, you might end up paying multiples of that. It's custom shop and it has the charm that you know who you're giving the money to.

    I really like my lp standard hp... I own a 2003 Strat Deluxe a 19 78 Telecaster Deluxe and a 2000 Les Paul special in TV yellow. I played a lot of guitars and I have to say I really love the new feel of the Gibson Les Paul Standard they sound great and I love playing mine. I had some setup issues when I first got it but I took it to the dealer I bought it from and they set it up for free which is pretty standard. Now she plays like butter... people can hate on Gibson's because they buy a cheap American-made model then compare it to I'm more higher end of another brand and really there's no comparison.

    Bought a "signature T" model about 2 or 3 years ago for £1,200ish and its all the Les Paul I need. Glad I did now seeing the prices coming out. £2.5K is too much for a "standard" guitar. OK if it's bling'd up or a limited run, but thats a huge increase over the last few years. I don't know how much the studio will be, but it's been moving further away from the "no frills" concept. Gutted because I LOVE les Pauls...

    I think an easy way to explain the whole "Standard" thing is to compare it to the Fender American Standard Stratocaster, which while it's the icon, it's also updated to modern standards. Fender lets some of the custom shop models or even the Mexican Standard take the place of the "classic" Strat.

  • @MarcRauchbach
    @MarcRauchbach 7 років тому +241

    Oh boy, I really don’t get that hole Gibson - especially Gibson Les Paul - hate cult. What’s the problem with the guitars, really? Yes, they are expensive. I managed to own 3 Les Pauls, one Tokai and two Gibsons, and I’m nowhere near to being rich, I just saved up for them. Are they too expensive? I don’t know, and I don’t really care. I see a guitar, I like it, I love it, I need to own it. Then I start saving up for it. In the very moment I buy it, I don’t think a second about how much money I hand the good man/woman from the music store in exchange for that guitar, I am just so happy I am finally able to take that Baby home!
    And after that the price tag doesn’t matter as well, a 2000 bucks guitar gets played the same way as a cheap Chinese one, I mean wtf, it’s not going to break?! Also one might say, that Chinese guitars are just as good as American made guitars. Yes, maybe they are, and if you are happy with your far eastern guitar, good for you sir, go create some nice music with it! But what is the consequence here? Just because they are fine and more affordable, other guitars than those made in Asia aren’t allowed to exist, leaving thousands of people in the instrument making industry unemployed? Well that seems to be fair…
    Another thing that I read and hear a lot is that Fender guitars are also American made and much cheaper, yeah well, I think you would agree that screwing two pieces of wood together and building a Les Paul Standard with glued on Neck and Top, plus the Binding and multi-colour finish do differ just a little bit in the time that you have to put into making it. Yes dudes, I know, I’m exaggerating, but you get the point.
    “Gibson is total crap, the quality is everything except good, and their guitars won’t stay in tune at all!” Well, I don’t get that, either. I don’t claim to have played thousands and thousands of Gibson guitars, but I do own two, and played some more in music shops, from friends and whatever. Not one of them was falling apart. Maybe I am just lucky, happy me. “But there is a tiny imperfection in the finish where the neck meets the body!” You really do give a shit, don’t ya? Maybe I am just a fool, but I really don’t. The guitars are handmade, stuff happens… And the thing with tuning stability, I really don’t see that as well. I change my strings every three months or so, and when I do, I stretch them properly. Of course a Les Paul is not like a Floyd Rose guitar, but it’s not like I start a song at bandrehearsal in E standard and after the first song the strings are Like F# F C A A Eb. I don’t know what all of you with those popular Gibson horror stories do to your guitars, but mine stay in tune just fine. I don’t know about the Custom Shop, but all Gibson USA guitars are set up with the PLEK system anyway, so if the Setup on your Gibson sucks, I’m sorry for you dude, really am, but who’s to blame here, really? And if your crappy set up guitar slipped through the quality control (which obviously doesn’t exist over at Gibson, I forgot), just bring it back, someone will fix it, for free.
    Lots of talking, all I’m trying to say here really is, if you don’t like Gibson, it’s fine man, if your Epiphone is just as good great man, go buy some nice stuff with that 2000 bucks you saved! But please, just don’t be a dick and stop trying to make me feel like a moron for loving my Les Pauls. So many great players can’t be wrong, but yeah, what do I know, right?
    Have a nice one, dudes and dudettes!

      Lots of people (myself including) think that they are too expencive for what they're worth. If they were handmade I would gladly play 2-3k but not for these.
      Also the decisions they have made are a bit nuts. I mean direct mounted pickups, that pinks burst that's not even finished, robot tuners? Who thought they were a good idea? Most people want to buy a traditional looking and feeling Les Paul but they're not making them. That leaves some people unsatisfied.

    • @MarcRauchbach
      @MarcRauchbach 7 років тому +11

      Well you don't have to get a high performance model. I'm not the biggest fan of those either. And that's just by the looks, as I haven't tried one yet. But I do think, that the neck joint is a really good idea, so I definetly will try one some day. But you can just get a Traditional, or a Classic. Also, over here in Germany Gibsons seem to be not quite as expensive as in the UK. And you can always get Models from previous years for good deals. I bought a 2014 Les Paul Signature in 2015 for under 1200€, took the robot tuning system off, sold it for 80 bucks and bought Klusons for 60, so that didn't work out too bad. Even today you can easily get a 2016 Trad. or Std for way under 2000€, and I think if you wait a couple of weeks, it's the same for the 2017 models.
      You might be right, that there are competitors in the same 2-3k pricerange out there, that build their guitars with a little higher attention to detail, but in terms of tone, a Gibson Les Paul is absolutely competitive to any guitar. It's not the best tone, because there is no such thing, but it's a great tone!

    I wonder why Gibson are charging so much though? I understand that a Strat is a far easier guitar to build but you can get a Custom Shop Strat/Tele for the same price as a Les Paul standard. They've got just as much history and are from just as much of an iconic brand but £1000 price difference between an American Professional Strat or a Les Paul Standard and around £800 difference even if you buy an American Elite. That's not a small chunk of change at all :-/
    Edit: I added the Elite since it's closer to the LP Standard in terms of electronics and certain other features.

    What amazes me to this day is that no one talks about the differences in sound they make. Does a Faded sound like a Studio. Does a Studio sound as good as a Standard? Exactly what do you get for your 1000 dollars when you buy a Standard over a classic and how much different do they sound. If the tonal differences are nil and the increase in money is due to the woods or hardware or electrical items that your putting on the guitar then please say so.

    2018 Les Paul standard including shipping to Dubai: 10,444 Dhs ( $2845 )

    They should implement the all access neck heel on every guitar on any range. That's something that does not affect the tone or stability at all, and can't think of anyone that's going to complain. Also it should have been done since 1954 or so.
    Also add a fucking volute on the headstock and do multi piece necks.

  • @PaczkoPL
    @PaczkoPL 7 років тому

    I disagree with if you like old classic players you have to choose the traditional. Lp traditional: thick tone, neck like baseball bat.Lp standard: nice balanced tone, many tone options due to split coils and tone knobs. Beautiful thin neck- so comfortable to play and looks amazing.But I have to agree that Andertons Guildford is the best music shop with any new guitar you can imagine!

    Separate video to explain the classic models? Traditional is like fender classic series, Standard is like fender deluxe and elite, Classic is like fender classic player, like the trad but with some bells and whistles to make it easier to play. The real standard would be the Studio, it has variations and tribute versions, like fender. I couldn't possibly understand why any one is confused.

    2017 Trad HP is an awesome guitar. No holes in it, so great tone and great variety of tones with access heel and superb neck. I think its sound is richer than the Std HP and playability is better than the trads. Too bad they decided not to continue the Trad HP line.

    Peter Green's guitar wasn't wired out of phase, the neck magnet was reversed/flipped. The Green tone is 2 humbuckers wired in phase but the pickups are magnetically out of phase. The green sound, when done properly, doesn't really sound like what you get on these Les Paul Standards.
    Lollar, Duncan, Bare Knuckle, WCR and several other makers have pickup models to give you a legit Peter Green tone

    • @BigEdWo
      @BigEdWo 7 років тому +3

      not so sure if this is true. if you flip the magnet the current will flow in the opposite direction. if you invert the wires the same thing will happen. in both cases the two humbuckers work against each other. i don't see the difference. but if i'm wrong just help me and let me know why.

    Great video guys - appreciate you going in depth on the whole line. Same with Fender & PRS. Guitars are one of the only things I can think of where aficionados slam the great iconic brands. Car lovers typically don't slam Ferrari or Carroll Shelby and then claim the Yugo is just as good. When most serious players get a new guitar I think it's expected you're dropping a grand or 3 (or more). If not now, then down the road when you can save up that much. Would like to see some jazz hollow body and nylon guitar love, although know the demand is way smaller...love you guys.

    The 2017 LP Traditional was not weight relieved and I almost bought it instead of the LP Standard, it was a tough call, until I relaized that the Trad had NICKEL hardware(Standard is CHROMED!) and I want to play the damn thing more than I want to polish it.

    Ha anyone noticed that at the 4:32 mark, there is a very quick, 4-frame, edit where the guy on the right has a pair of sun glasses added to his face? It's quick, so look for it carefully. Is that a normal thing with these videos?

    Gibson's "entry" Les Paul, the Tribute, is a fantastic guitar that nails the tone and vibe but comes without the bells and whistles. I love mine, and for less than a grand it's hard to complain about the pricing.
    I would love a Standard, but it is a bit pricier than I'd like to pay. But again, there are other options for a proper Gibson :)

    I like the ABR-1 bridge on the Trad. My 2009 Trad + has a Nashville bridge, as do my 2014 Trad Pro II and 2012 Jr. Special Humbucker. My 1991 SG Special has an ABR-1 bridge (w/ the retaining wire) and it just gives it that traditional look. I don't know if it makes any significant tonal or sustain difference.

    In 1959 there was no Les Paul Standard, it was still Les Paul Model. It started in 1960. The rest ist changing history, like Jagger/Richards formed the Stones or Mc Vie is founding member of Fleetwood Mc.

    Of the two I'd say the Traditional sounded best in the review. Gibson obviously not listening to the calls for the Standard to get the poker chip back. Even if it was just a spare thrown into the case as an option it might help. I've always loved the cherry but that t-burst looks very tasty.
