  • I Bought the FIRST BROKEN Xbox Series X Controller - Can I Fix It? When I plugged the controller in it had no power and didn't respond at all. While diagnosing the issue I discovered some gunk on some of the motherboard components. I decided to reflow the main chip on the motherboard in case this BGA chip wasn't fully connected. And that got it to work...until I put it all back together. So it was back to doing more testing to see what was causing the problem.

    This was actually really interesting because it was a novel problem you couldn't fix so easily. You were able to figure out the limits of the problem and you basically have a really good idea about the culprit, but could also be still wrong. Intriguing indeed. If it was just a totally unknown situation of not even able to turn the controller on, it would be far less interesting.

  • @downesg
    @downesg 3 роки тому +8

    Those appear to be two patch antennas by design (can't see other side of the board to confirm). What you have may be a 1T2R configuration: 1 transmit, 2 receive. So the faulty path is one of the receives which would explain why your reception suffers. Wireless reception is influenced by the square of the distance you are from the source (electrical engineers are taught this in first year). You were on the right track looking at the components in the receive chain.
    Take your soldering iron and rotate any of the inline or shunt caps in the RF signal path and see if they crack. A common but hard to spot issue with 0402 caps is cracking when installed by the pick 'n place machine. If they are damaged, then replace as required. A hairline fracture is hard to see but easy to find as the part will literally crumble when you apply heat.
    You can swap in the other daughter card and isolate the fault to the radio module or the side with the antennas. Most likely on the radio module side. The extra steps will confirm.

      Heh, must be a non-European person then.
      Over here EVERY part of the device has to be covered by the standard 24-month warranty.
      Or, the seller broke the controller and knew that warranty doesn't cover it, like chucking it across the room, or giving it liquid damage.

    • @thattonytuna
      @thattonytuna 3 роки тому +4

      @@SuperSpyMonkey Doesn't hurt to try though. I sent my PS4 Pro to Sony two years after warranty expired and I had even opened it so the warranty stickers were slightly peeled off and they still sent me a fixed console for free. All I had to do was provide proof of purchase. Same with an original PS4 controller I had bought used on eBay! I sent them the eBay receipt and they still accepted it and sent me a new controller, I think I just had to pay shipping on that one. So I would always give the manufacturer a try first, especially with a device so new and with an issue that doesn't seem like there was any tampering done.

    @TronicsFix if you notice the antennas are soldered to the other half of the board. I’m guessing it’s so they can use an area of the PCB as a bigger antenna. Try desoldering the one that’s causing the controller to not turn on and then plug it into the antenna port by doing this you should be able to see if it’s a issue with grounding on the soldered part of the antenna. Since these are the same antenna styles used by smartphones, computers, etc. I think that the chip is fine but there’s a short in the antenna wire when it’s soldered to the other pcb.

    Bought a tool kit to try and repair a sticky B button and a weird Joystick Click (it only register when pushing down the joystick very hard and not when clicking normally). The B is now working properly but not the joystick... Don't know what I should do

    What if the antenna connector on the MCU board is shorted when you plug in? You can test it.

    Is it possible to replace the antenna that’s causing the issue, or the pad it connects to? Just wondering and maybe not the chip itself but antenna 🤔
    Would be weird, but maybe could try🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @The_Keeper
      @The_Keeper 3 роки тому

      Yeah, that was my thought too, because it seems like its the antenna short-circuiting, not a problem with the chip.

    Why don't you try the known good D-Pad board with the 'faulty' controller. I say that because I recently purchased an Xbox One Fornite controller that had a faulty 'view' buton and replaced the power board and it fixed my issue.
