Yes, I know I said it hadn't been powered on for years literally 2 minutes after plugging it in, but that's because I'm stupid. I checked all the capacitors on the power board and they were all in the microvolts, just to make sure it was safe to work on. 😬

It's so weird. Some time ago my wife started watching someone on YT fixing consoles. Then recently your channel appeared in my feed and now I am hooked to watching console repairs. Life is weird!
I have an OG Xbox that had this exact problem and I never got around to fixing it. Now you've given me the motivation to dig it out after all these years. Thanks, Steve!
There are many texts and videos out there about this faulty clock capacitor. It should be removed in all older XBoxes since it's known to damage stuff around it. A mod chip might also be a great addition to it. That way it might make a cool media center device. These XBoxes are incredible fine consoles. Even for today. They deserve to be repaired and preserved! Good job on this one, Steve. I love all your repair videos. They gave me the impulse to finally learn soldering etc. Thanks for all your amazing videos!
I've got a modded one sitting in storage that I fixed after I messed up loading XBMC. I managed to get the hard drive unlocked and readable by the pc I used to fix it by booting the Xbox and unplugging the hard drive data cable from the Xbox during the boot splash screen. Then plugged it into the PC when I had the bios boot sequence paused. This allowed the PC to see the drive as a native drive and allow read/write access.
just blows that all of them will die due to leaky Caps... So if you have an OG XBOX, you have to open it up and replace the Clock Caps and the high water containing Ultra Low ESR Caps with suitable replacements (Panasonic FM! and ONLY those are suitable. As they are the only ones I found with similar Impedance to the Original Caps)
Don’t remove the clock cap in the 1.6 as it will NOT work without it. It also is a better quality and rarely if ever fails. You have the best xbox model which is 1.1. It has a 1 Meg bios chip on it. It can be TSOP flashed without requiring any mod chip at all and you get the full benefits of the mod chip as a result. You can also opt to split the TSOP into two banks of 512 and install a switch to alternate between the two. you really really should mod this as you can change the EEPROM to read that it is an NTSC model and then it’ll open up the HD resolutions with an applicable component or HDMI cable. The Euro models are stuck in 480p until the mod is complete. You may also if you want an additional challenge install the missing 4 ram modules to get it up to 128 MB of ram, which makes emulators a bit better specifically the N64.
I put a mod chip in mine back when it was new, for the life of me though I cannot find my Xbox anymore I believe my younger sister gave it away to one of her boyfriends thruout the years.
Hello Steve. Ive been watching fixing videos for years and following many. I only started to follow you recently and by far you are the best! Can’t wait for more of your brilliant work. Keep it up buddy!! 🇨🇦 🇬🇧
Ahh, your first Xbox! Love this machine. One of my all time favorite consoles. That clock cap leaking is a very well known and documented problem with model 1.0 - 1.4 Xbox units. I work for a retro game store and I actually offer the removal service for free to any customers that own an OG Xbox, because if left unattended, that cap WILL destroy the board at some point, if it hasn't already destroyed it, good job recognizing the leakage your first go-around!

Love your videos Steve and you are correct, like others have said, its basically a dongle or a way to bypass the main menu so you could watch DVDs on the Xbox. It originally came with a remote and you had to buy it separate from the system itself. You couldn't watch DVDs without that dongle. If you soft-mod the Xbox and put XBMC on it, you can watch DVDs / DVDRs / CDRs without the need of having that dongle.

I watched this a year ago and UA-cam said i didn't watch this at all yet i have a comment saying otherwise sigh... Meah youstuff is so good id watch ir again anyway
Great video, thanks for taking me down memory lane. I can't remember how many OG Xboxes I modded for friends and family to be used with XBMC. There was some kind if chip I installed which needed me drilling a whole into the case for the IR Receciver. With that you could turn on/off the Xbox with the DVD remote. Good Times :)
That HDD is a 10GB 5.4K 2MB ATA drive which was about the right size for the OG Xbox. These were normally swapped out for 250GB drives like I did with my Crystal Xbox. Now being swapped for other drives.
The joints on the ac plug, this failure is prone to many launch and later versions. M$ implemented a program that if your Serial# was in the affected range of production you received a GFCI replacement power cord! A friend showed me how they fixed theirs without opening up the console, in FEAR of voiding the WARRANTY. They took their hot iron and used it to heat each ac line on the socket individually. It eventually reflowed, but the socket was junk. I then brought mine over and disassembled it for the same repair, and found a bunch of blockage of the vents. Took it home and used the air squeezer to free the debris. Upon returning, they had theirs took apart...they were so sure theirs was worse, for they used it almost all the time playing halo 2. That day my friend became a fearless modder.
Never seen the clock battery actually replaced before, just removed 😆 nice one. I have to practice soldering which I keep telling myself. It's the next level of modding. I just put myself off with my unsteady hands... I have some led lights I can start on

I learned a lot! of what I know and terms etc.. from before the internet was a thing, some would say 'back in my day' 'old school' etc.. all that nonsense. Laughing out loud.
No body can know everything. The real truth is brother Steve! we all are Humans, we all make mistakes. Nice to see our be-loved MVP fixing an OG no drive Flash spoil sport 😂👍🏻
😁 thanks brother Steve! I'm tempted to get another one and mod it. There's just something nice to me about a fully stock version, not sure why! I'd like to get my hands on one of the green or crystal clear ones, but they're a bit more expensive! 😬

Really enjoyed this one. I also resurrected my own back in the day back to life. And yes, the device is the receiver for the XBOX DVD remote
Great job Steve! Just a tip i got from the Xbox elders: to remove this gunk from the heat sinks try WD-40 on a cotton pad and start rubbing!
I have no idea what / how you are doing this , BUT cant stop watching 👍🙃
Steve! I discovered your channel last week and absolutely addicted. I went ahead and SMASHED that subscribe button. Keep the vids coming!
Good job putting the wrong amount of thermal paste 😉
UA-cam suggested your videos and I’m hooked ,love your channel and playing catch-up on your other videos ,great video 👍👍
The rectangle up at the top of the hard drive gives specifications of size. You can plug those into a conversion tool and it'll tell you how many gigabytes it holds. This one seems to be around 10 gigabytes
You're right, just found this particular model online and it is 10GB indeed.
It was a real flashback to my PC repair days in the late 90's when you had to calculate it since it wasn't written on the drive!
Xboxes always have either a 10gb or an 8gb hard drive.
@@whompronnie DAMMIT - Came here to say this!!! I remember the days you had to do MATHS to figure out the capacity of a drive! It was intense back then
Which bits denote the size? All of it? I would imagine CYL means cycle.
Thanks! For the update about the Hand Held Sonic game!
Thanks Tru! No problem at all. Appreciate the support 👍
Hi Steve I just stumbled into your channel with this vid and I absolutely loved it! You have a great sense of humor and are great at fixing stuff. Thanks man!
the cap you installed has a plus and a minus stamped into it at the weld point from arm to cap.
Nice find for only 26 squids. Especially unopened.
Differently the most random channel that I found that answers all my an asked questions but I’m quite glad I found
Beautiful fix, and bonus a free Halo 2. I can't wait to finish moving, I really need to open mine up and fix whatever is wrong.
Déjà vu - I just watched your crystal Xbox video and this one came up next!
Looks like that capacitor you fitted had a + and - on either side...great vid as always...
I'm new to this channel, but i've been hooked on watching these fixes. you might have mentioned this in a prior video or live stream, but where did you learn to all this? and is this knowledge and experience an extension of a pre-youtube job? keep it up, your videos are very entertaining and insightful.. everything you are saying and doing is way over my head - i'm a corporate accountant and have no clue what are you doing, but i am big gamer so its amazing to see the inner workings of the devices i own and reminder to me to clean the dust more often from these consoles.
Love the videos. I also enjoy hearing “get in there” after you get the stuff working. I would buy a shirt that had that phrase on it. 😂. Keep it up man and can't wait to see the next video.
I watched this a year ago and UA-cam said i didn't watch this at all yet i have a comment saying otherwise sigh... Meah youstuff is so good id watch ir again anyway
Everyone: "HOW MUCH thermal paste do we need?"
Steve: "YES!"
The covers my gawd. This man is going pro every front
Good fix Steve!!!...The OG Xbox makes an excellent emulation machine too!!!
I love my og Xbox. Still got it somewhere. Installed the Xecuter 1.x mod chip. She was a beast. Happy days
Just found this guy, he's a must watch for sure. Thanks man for the content.
Well done shooting past 50k subs, Nice 👍
Thanks Arran! 👍
If you didnt notice, the solder legs of that flat capacitor had literally a “+” and a “-“sign embossed
Yeah.... That was a hard miss. Honestly.
I used to mod these things. Xecturer chip, bigger harddrive and load it up with games. Then resold them for a nice profit. Good days!
Never seen the clock battery actually replaced before, just removed 😆 nice one. I have to practice soldering which I keep telling myself. It's the next level of modding. I just put myself off with my unsteady hands... I have some led lights I can start on
When you used the solder sucker and the cow pic came up that was it for me you sir are insane love it
The replacement cap literally had a + and a - symbol on the sides indented on the surface
If I remember right it was common for the little pully in the disc drive to get worn and you had to encourage the slot to go back in with your finger
Incorrect amount of thermal paste… I seen what you did there 😂😂😉 love your channel sir!
