This was exactly the video I’ve been looking for, been painting my salamanders with a very slow (but beautiful) layering method and as a parent I just don’t have the time to finish an army. Can’t wait to try this thank you!
I enjoyed the video and the model looks great. I feel like their are a hell of a lot of tutorials on "just getting it done" or "table top ready" though. I would LOVE to see a few tutorials of someone who is able to paint to your standard going absolutely nut and paint something with no time restraint. Still, brilliant content. Nice work.
Hi, long shot question as I know I'm really late to the video. Any suggestions on a colour match for karandras green? For fixing mistakes where it's pooled too much, or I've got back on the wrong bit etc. Tried warp lightning but it's too dark and mixing wasn't very successful.
Depending on how big the section is, I'd be tempted to re-paint the plate with corax white, cover it in Karandras Green again, and then add a thinned coat of warp lighning on the lower half of the plate or the part that faces down
I don't, I'm afraid - but it's pretty simple - spray it black and then spray white from directly above the mini - if you need more sprsy the mini with the can at a 45 degree angle ↙️
I haven't got one but if you search for 'zenithal priming ' you will see plenty of results Any black and white primer are fine - the GW ones are good but a little pricey so there may be an alternative local to you such as army painter. If you are in the UK, colour forge is a good option
@@ThePaintingCoach I just reapplied by imperial fists contrast though and it looks so much better thick than how much I was putting on. I need to pay attention more
My brother liked Salamander, but now he is old and hit by work. He gives me the Intercessor box. I'm going to paint it and give it back to brother. Thank you for the good video. Sorry my short english.
When priming with chaos black and then the white spray at 45 degrees do we wait for the chaos black to dry first? Thanks in advance and thanks so much for the video really useful
@@ThePaintingCoach Thank you for your support. I saw the new mk3 astartes strike force for the heresy and tempted to start a salamanders army. Thank you for your time
I'm using Citadel - Chaos Black and White Scar. I always make sure to warm the cans slightly in warm water, shake for at least 2 mins, and then make my first spray off the mini into thin air - this clears any dust or dry paint in the nozzle. Hope that helps!
You may need to repaint a whole panel depending on how bad the mistake is - or you can use some highlighting to cover it if the mistake is small - it all depends on what it looks like
So a quick question in relation to colour lore. Time was an SM Chapter had 10 companies each identified by the colour on the rim of their shoulder pads. The elite company was always the first company and had the white accent and usually came equipped with Tactical Dreadnaught Armour. So has the lore changed and do the Primaris Marines operate in companies? How do they identify each company if they do?
My understanding is that they identify the same way - if codex compliant. Non codex compliant chapters might use different ways - the SM codex has a lot of info on this is think
Asking as a begginner: isnt it easy to paint each part individually before assembling it? It seems easier to paint each detail that way. However, I still didnt paint a single mini, so I truly dont know. Is it a case where you do what you prefer or is it actually more effective to assembly it first and then paint?
I really love this way to paint my salamanders and it has been a great help so far. But i do have one question. Does anyone have a good recommendation for a color that covers up mistakes on the armour by other colors? Because when i try to paint over it with kandras green contrast the spots still show. Like for example some of the black legion got on the armor.
It may be awkward - I would prime some cardboard and try it on there first that way you know how it will settle, and what effect your manipulating it with a brush will have. I'd also consider thinning it 1:1 with medium and using two coats - again test it Otherwise you are looking at doing a panel at a time and keeping an eye that it doesn't pool too badly. I'd also maybe try a black/grey/ white approach to smooth the unser painting transition
@@ThePaintingCoach wow that was instant response. You're awesome! Thanks alot. If you don't mind me asking, do you have any tips for doing a flesh tearers mini?
Sorry for a dumb question : How do you get the Salamander and the fire symbol on the shoulder pad please? Is it a sticker or did you paint it yourself?
Without seeing it, it might be difficult to tell! But some possibilities: 1. Make sure the paint is really well mixed - no milky residue at the bottom. 2. Focus on one area at a time - i.e. paint one whole leg, then the other. 3. Make sure you use a decent size brush and have a good amount of paint on it - you can then move it around and manipulate it before it dries, and take off some of the worst pools.
Hey Coach! I know this video is two years old, so not sure if you will see this. Quick question: did you put more than one coat of the Karandras Green on the model? I'm painting up an army of Salamanders, and I feel like my initial contrast paint layer over the primer didn't get anywhere near the same level of coverage that yours did.
@ThePaintingCoach got it. Thank you!!! Absolutely love your videos. I'm just getting into the table top, and your videos are helping me overcome my apprehension to paint my first army (I'm not inherently artistic). Thanks!
It will be darker - I really like the effect with Karandras - if you wanted the tone of WL then I recommend buying a new pot so it has the newer formula in it
I've tried but the figures are darker and have a light-reflecting effect. Do you dilute the Karandas Green before applying it? I can't achieve the same result as you but I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Great video btw, thanks!
I don't dilute it - make sure to only work on one section at a time e.g. one leg and really spread the paint out, keeping an eye that it doesn't pool too much
same, my karandras green is dark aswell but thats probably because i used mechanicus standard grey. Looks like i may need to buy wraithbone or something
@@TaxemicFanatic Use chaos black spray and then white scar from above then use katandras green, it will be much lighter. Or you can do 2 thin layers of warpstone glow and dry brush twice with moot green to build up a light tone of green which isnt too light
I’ve been using your scheme and the results have been generally good, however the green on your marines are a lot more saturated and vibrant than on mine. I’m using your guide step for step, do you have any clue on where I could be going wrong or making a mistake?
Hmm I'm afraid not. The only thing I can think of is perhaps the paint is too thin? Try adding it to some spare parts a bit more generously and see what the results are like 👍🏻

I adore this, what do you do if you make a mistake though? Say getting black on the green?
You could try some warpstone glow layered over - or repaint the panel with corax white and then Karandras green on top
@The Painting Coach can warp lightning contrast work as a decent substitute if I dont have specified green?
Try it on some spare pieces and see if you like it 👍🏻

Yes of course you can! Just spray the dark colour then the light colour from above - i do this often :)

When you initially sprayed it all black, was it a paint+primer? Or was it just paint?
Just a black primer

Just found this and is absolutely what im going to try for my salamanders? Would this approach work for things like a dreadnought?
It might be a bit streaky over a dreadnought unless you use an airbrush
