When Matt is singing, Scott covers the bass line. Kevin is actually a tenor.
@GraffitiTurtle same bro. i was gonna comment about it too until i saw this comment lol
Was going to say the same thing. I really good song to hear Scots bass is Sound of Silence. And if you want to hear what Kevin can do, check out their Amazing Grace.
If you want to hear Scott's amazing range, look up his video "I should tell ya momma on you". It's freaking crazy amazing.
Check out Avi singing Change on the Rise
Watching Hallelujah live you can see how Scott takes over bass when needed... He does very well with it.
Aha! Singapore at the Star Vista for live performance! It's great
Awesome live even if it's on an I Phone it's amazing!
Love this song and Matt and Mitch harmonizing.... Called MATCH
oooooooo.. "MATCH".. I like that! 💖 😊
Kevin's cover of "Down" will knock your socks off.
Yes. So good.
A lot of people get confused about Kevin because his beatboxing and vocal percussion often works together with the bass line, but Kevin doesn't ever sing bass notes. When he does sing, it's in the tenor range. Bass notes are always Matt, Avi, or Scott. Also, it's Scott and Mitch who have done other stuff together as Superfruit. Kevin, Avi, and Kirstin each have their own solo stuff. Enjoying your journey!
Check out Superfruit's Katy Perry's cover of Rise! Very powerful!
Kev has a voice of an angel ☺️ that's why they like to throw it in at the end many of their christmas civers as a surprise 😁 a sweet iniccent tone
Kevin can do some throat singing, which is quite low pitched (he does this in “Love Again”), but his natural singing range is definitely tenor.
@@lachimiste1 He can also play Cello in a way that sounds very similar to Bass
The only exception is Songs like "Learn to love" where Kevin does handle 1 layer of the bass with throat singing for a bassline beat.
Gold, any of the evolution videos, Aha! Singapore, any of Scott and Mitch's Superfruit music
This. All of this.
Aha at the Star Vista.
Popspring 2016 and Aha! Live in Singapore are live concerts, then you can also check out their cover of "Gold" by Kiiara, "No" by Meghan Trainor and all of their Evolutions of "Beyonce, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Michael Jackson, Music" are all one takes, them just sitting on a couch and Slaying Everything that they Sing!!!! They have a Live version of "Hallelujah"
absolutely, especially Gold - be sure to have seen the original by Kiarra (sp?) first though - just to see how good PTX are in covering this song.
Matt & Mitch blend so well...you can really hear that on this song!
Pop Spring 2016, 4 songs only 15 mins 👍. They have a live cover of Ride by 21 pilots. Then the Aha!, Telephone, and Break Free/See Through ( all from the Star Vista Singapore Concert). Love your reactions 👍
Thank you CourtAnn!
This is a must must. Even if you only do Can’t Sleep Love
Pop Spring 2016 and Aha! in Singapore definitely!
I'm one of the people telling you to react to this song. It's proof that you don't need the beatboxing to create magic. And the combination of Matt and Mitch is out of this world. Next one - Gold. Trust us, will blow your mind.
Scott Hoying does I Should Tell Ya Momma on You, just awesome! Love your reactions!
Yeah, Scott is the only one who can take over the bass line.
He's been doing it for a long time - whenever you see Avi or, in more recent years, Matt sing the lead it's Scott doing bass. :)
A perfect example is Hallelujah. Watch their live performance on their channel.
Another perfect example of Scott singing bass is Sound of Silence, but there's a live version of Hallelujah that is great.
So glad you gave props to Matt!!! I still think he gets overlooked sometimes
I believe Scott covers the bass line when Matt is soloing.....help me out Pentaholics.😊😊
I agree, I believe it was Scott singing bass when Matt was singing his parts. It sounded great. Scott has such an awesome range.
Yes, it's Scott singing Bass whenever Avi or Matt is singing!!!!
You Sir....are correct.
Yes it is Scott doing the bass when Matt is singing
Kevin's singing range is tenor, I believe, not bass. Scott covers base.
Ok. So for actual live performances, check out:
“Aha -Live Singapore -The Star Vista”
“Hallelujah” from their Christmas special
“Popspring 2016”
Also, their evolution series is a live recording, done in one shot.
“Evolution of Michael Jackson”
“Evolution of Rihanna”
“Evolution of Beyoncé”
Evolution of Ariana Grande and Evolution of Music as well
I'd also add in their cover of Gold which was a single live take.
Definitely “Gold”. It’s one of my faves...I can’t believe I forgot to add that!
I can also add Avi's cover of Change on the rise and I defiantly recommend that to check it out
The Aha performance!
Live "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" on Kimmel.
"The Lucky Ones" live
"Love Me When I Don't" live.
Popspring live is about 5 songs, 4 of which are originals.
@Ofra Cohen , I stand corrected.
There is a TON of live PTX videos. I'm sure there is an endless line of Pentaholics that are more than willing to send you some, but I recommend reacting to "AHA! Live in Singapore at the Star Vista". Mitch goes the f*** off. It's amazing.
I second the requests for “Aha!” Live from the Star Vista in Singapore. The videos for “Gold” and “Silent Night” are also live, they’re all phenomenal
Great reaction Thanks. This is one of my favorite PTX videos. I love Matt and appreciate your positive comments. I think that he's amazing.
He’s my favorite member of all 6. I think his voice is the smoothest and easily the most accurate.
Aha Live Singapore is one of my favorites. It's very Mitch-centric, with the original bass Avi trying to blow out the speakers...the sound quality is what one would expect from a camera phone. But it is beautiful, raw and just jaw dropping.
Another fabulous song choice for them. Excellent!
For live, as others have said, Popspring 2016 is amazing. It has four songs (3 originals), and is really really great quality. The songs are Cracked, Can't Sleep Love, Water, Evolution of Michael Jackson. Filmed by MTV, so the sound is great. Another if you want to get seriously Mitch-slapped is Aha! Live at the Starvista (Singapore). Make sure it's THAT specific one.
Songs I recommend from all their side projects (except Matt, as I'm not sure he's done much yet):
Superfruit: Rise, Guy.exe
Kirstin: Break a Little, Naked
Avi: Change on the Rise, Quarter Paster Four, Chains (both regular version and alt version), Full Moon
Scott: I Should Tell Ya Momma on You, Lost on You
Mitch (Messer): Graveyard, Angels Pray
Kevin: Down, Human Nature, Renegade
@Austin Howland I'm great! How about yourself?
@Austin Howland Northern Ireland. What about you?
Nope, I'm Californian, but I live over here now.
Love, love, LOVE...Matt! The timbre of his voice is so soft and smooth. He adds a whole new dimension to the band. BRAVO!
Here are a few live suggestions that are amazing...
- "Pentatonix-Love Again (Live on 24/7)" posted by bluetennant1998
- "Cracked- Pentatonix Live" posted by H82LuvU
- "Pentatonix- Run to You" posted by ClassicalMPR
Of course the "Pentatonix- Aha! Singapore, Star Vista" posted by Shane Nicole everyone mentions is insane as well as their Popspring 2016 concert. Enjoy!
"AHA! Live in Singapore at the Star Vista" is a phenomenal live performance!
If you want to hear them live, I think the best thing to do would be to start at the very beginning. Watch them on The Sing Off, where they started, now almost 10 years go. All 12 episodes of the competition are available here. And watch the intro and judges comments too. I think most of us who were on board from the very beginning would agree the highlights are episodes #10, 12, 7, 4 and 1 (in some order depending on personal choice -- this is my personal choice order, with 10 and 12 being basically tied). To give you a quick link, here's the link to #10, the episode that closed the door if there was any doubt -- they won it here. ua-cam.com/video/yhTh6BqK6Nw/v-deo.html
Mrduckbeae’s videos got blocked! I’ve watched them a million times but I’m sad about it. Good thing there are others up there.
I like their "Pentatonix Daft Punk mix private performance". Recorded backstage in Orlando on someone's phone.
I really like your reactions to Pentatonix and I just finished watching your entire Pentatonix playlist for about the third time. You are requesting "live" performances and I wasn't sure if you meant individually or as Pentatonix. If you're looking for PTX live, I would suggest the "Daft Punk Private Performance" on the Nick Riddell channel and the "Pentatonix Christmas Special" version of "Hallelujah". For an individual performance Kevin's "Down" is a must see. My vote for your next Pentatonix reaction is "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy". Think about it, an orchestral piece with no vocals being performed by an a Capella group without instruments. Also, imagine this this won them their second Grammy (after Daft Punk) for "Best Arrangement - Instrumental or a Capella". I'd love to see your reactions to that. Keep up the great work.
Classical MPR has a live version of PTX performing Run To You. Just search “PTX run to you live”. I believe Silent Night on their own channel is also live. Those two are some of my favorites
Literally ever single Pentatonix song puts me in a constant state of goosebumps and I also loose my breath for the entire song!
Hi! I love your Pentatonix reactions. I have a couple of suggestions for you. Gold from Kiiara cover, Cheerleader cover, La la latch cover and their original song "Sing". Keep up the good work! Enjoy! Edit: I forgot the Rather Be and Havana covers! Oh! Mitch and Scott had a side gig called "Superfruit" and they did a lot with it however I honestly recommend Hip-hop goes Broadway, Hip-hop goes Broadway 2 and Empire Medley. It is SO GOOD!
Yes! Those Superfruit Medleys are incredible!!
Love the Mitch-Matt high-low harmony. Then they echo it with Scott and Kirstin, but Kirstin is doing the low harmony... mind blowing stuff.
Thank you so much for playing Pentatonix. I love their sound.😂
scott is doing the bass when mat is singing lead
Scott takes over the bass when Matt or Avi have a singing lead. Kevin is a tenor. LOVING your PTX reactions!!!💥
Thanks Cecy! I’m having a blast checking them out!
The first time I heard this song was in the movie Donnie Darko . The effects behind them were used in that movie . Loving your channel.
They have a lot of fantastic live performances... their Hallelujah Christmas TV Special, Gold, any of their evolution videos, Aha! from Singapore, and Spring Pop Concert are some great ones to start with.
Scott covers the bass. He even did that when Avi was with the group. In Hallelujah, Scott takes over the bass line when Avi sings his part.
for live ones Pentatonix - Cracked (Live on the Honda Stage at iHeartRadio) is a good one. There are probably a ton of live videos out there. Their tour schedule before 2020 was INSANE. Avi overtone lion sleeps tonight is also amazing (it's live and it showcases Avi's overtone singing which is super cool!)
I came in early in Avi’s time with PTX, and as a baritone/bass, he is actually what drew me to their sound. It’s not often in my range that I can sing along with stuff without transposing. That said, one of the things I’m loving about Matt’s tenure is how often he and Mitch are paired up. Their voices blend in such a neat way that I never get tired of hear.
Matt's voice is pure butter!
If you want to see Scott kick serious bass check out his cover of I Should Tell Ya Momma On You. He is a one man band and performed in one take. Enjoying your discovery of PTX.
YAAAAASSSSS!!!!!
L O V E that one!!!!
I call this "pulling the goalie" when they forego Kevin's percussion and instead go for full five-part harmony. The effect is mesmerizing on the right song.
Yeah it was Scott like others said. Best example of Scott doing a bass range is Hallelujah. A lot of people (myself included) didn't know he was the second bassline to Avi.
All group members (not sure about Matt, but everyone in the OG lineup) has side projects. Scott and Mitch have Superfruit. Kirstie released a solo album and did a run on Broadway. Kevin does have his own side channel (KO) which is an amazing rabbit hole (Kevin was on Live at Carnegie Hall at 16) and then Avi has his own solo stuff and some stuff with himself and the Sequoias. I know Avi has also done collabs with Peter Hollins and some other people. I know Matt was doing some stuff before but I am not sure what it would be under (if it's on UA-cam)
Pentatonix covering "AHA" in Singapore the Star Vista is a live recording someone took while at the performance. And before you say "where is Kevin?" He's there, he just isn't shown.
If you want to hear a really stripped down performance of the same song try "Pentatonix - Aha! (Cover) [Livestream]
If you want live performance and original songs take a look at popspring performance 2016
I know they have Hallelujah Christmas special live, there is also an Imagine live. They do Amazing Grace live under the Rockefeller Tree Lighting special. There are also Sound of Silence lives. I have been to 3 of their concerts and they're just as amazing live... Can't' wait for them to be able to get back on the road and come back to Ohio ! You are doing an excellent job, keep up the great PTX reactions !
You've been reacting to a lot of Pentatonix so I'd really recommend watching some of their performances on The Sing Off, it's so great to really be able to see Pentatonix really right at the beginning of their career.
It's really good to be able to see them in their infancy and see just how far they've come.
Great reaction, I enjoyed it.
For a live reaction I suggest Telephone and the Beyonce Medley, live in Singapore at the Star Vista (in 2015).
Telephone was the first song they've sang together as a group, for the Sing off auditions.
No, Scott covers bass when Matt has a solo. Scott's range is crazy. Love your reaction!
If you are looking for a live performance, Aha, Singapore the Star Vista is just the ticket, it must be this version ua-cam.com/video/aT2Nm4fYmI4/v-deo.html
However, you may not be ready for it....rumor has it there were a couple of cans of Red Bull involved before the show...
Yes it’s Scott on bass when called for when Matt/Avi busy… Kevin is beatboxer extraordinaire/tenor
Seasons Of Love sung live on the 4th of July.
Just a handful:
Pentatonix Singapore F1 Performance 17th September 2016 (Cover of Ride by Twenty One Pilots)
PENTATONIX - "Gold" by Kiiara - Mohegan Sun - 11/12/16
Pentatonix & Dolly Parton - Jolene - 2017
PENTATONIX - COFFEE IN BED (LIVE ON THE LATE LATE SHOW) - 10 March, 2021
Pentatonix Performs 'Love Me When I Don't' On The Kelly Clarkson Show - 27 March, 2021
There's a LOT of material out there
Scott is a baritone and fills in on base line when Mat sings in his upper range. Scott did the same thing when Avi was still part of the group.
Ok, so the “Avi helped find his replacement” is actually all fairy tales. He left and they were just the 4 of them for some time before they found Matt. They had over 50 basses that auditioned, and Matt was the one that got in.
Avi did comment on one of their covers a couple years ago and said that he is proud of his successor.
Check out " Aha" live in Singapore. It was shot by a fan at a concert. Can't get more real than that.
Loved your reaction. There is a wonderful live, though fancam, version of Aha, from Singapore, that is well worth hearing. Audio is surprisingly good.
Something I love is that there’s many songs (Sound of silence and hallelujah in particular) where if the bass (its happened with both Avi and Matt) has a solo, Scott will actually take over and do the bass lines which is wild and I believe Scott is doing that in this song when Matt and Mitch are both singing together!!
Check out their mix private performance with the daft punk cover. I love that they can do these effects sound with just their voice
One of my favorites by Pentatonix and one that is not talked about a ton is their cover of "Can't Help Falling in Love." Love your reactions, some of the best on UA-cam! Check out the cover I mentioned if you can. Thanks!
Fyi they sound just as good live. That's what makes them crazy good. It's actually hard to believe when you hear them live because they actually sound that good.
You should check out Lost on You by Scott and Mario Jose. Also Kevin does his one man band thing on Down (KOver).
For live vids: Silent Night is incredible. They will take your breath away. And Aha! Live at the Star Vista, if you haven’t done that one yet. Mitch is unreal! There’s also a live performance of Natural Disaster at Springfield where Avi shakes the stage.
Yes Yes Yes Yes!!!!!!!! I've been waiting for you to do this one!!!!! Amazing!!!! 🤘🤘🤘😎😎😎😃😃😃
Avi Kaplan, the low bass singer usually seen in a beanie cap, left the group about 7 yrs ago. Recording life was hard on him and his mother was seriously ill, contracts and promises kept him from taking time to be with her and his family. But he's pursuing a solo career now.
To SEE Scott cover the bass line (and cement it in your mind like it did for me) and to watch a live performance, I recommend their Official Video "Hallelujah" Live. It's from their first Christmas Special that aired on NBC in 2016.. In the video, the camera is on Avi and Scott during Avi's solo and you see Scott singing the bass line. It answered all OUR questions about what we were hearing on the audio version of the song since the original video for "Hallelujah" (that everyone reacts to) doesn't show Scott during Avi's solo.. but we HEAR someone singing bass. We'd read that Scott could sing some bass notes but we'd not really had any PTX songs with Scott singing bass. When we saw him singing bass on that live performance we got very excited about all the possibilities! They've put Scott in the role of bass frequently since Matt joined as Matt has a very solid upper range and they are giving him alot of solos in that part of his range since his popular solo in Sound of Silence. When Matt's singing a solo, Scott's singing bass. Kevin NEVER sings bass. 😊❤️ Link to Hallelujah Live below.
ua-cam.com/video/haFHrfmfHbc/v-deo.html
They release Mad World in 2020, so I don't know if they have a live version of this yet. They have done some from their original album, The Lucky Ones. They aren't touring until 2022, so we may have to wait until then. IDK.
Best Live is the Silent Night they recorded in a church. Absolutely stunning.
Singapore star Vista, aha and telephone are excellent the concert there they were on fire.
LIVE one that doesn't duplicate a tune you've done - see You Tube "Pentatonix - La La Latch (2015 New Year's Rockin' Eve)" - otherwise - watch "Hallelujah A Pentatonix Christmas Special" to see Scott cover the bass while Avi has the lead
I love your reactions. I Can tell you really love the vocal arrangement part and want to understand and hear all the aspects of their arrangement. It’s fun to see you thinking through different sections.
PTX are out of control. I watched them on the Sing Off and knew after the 2 or 3rd performance that they’d win -then was so stoked by their success. The way their brains work for layering and building their sounds and arrangements is crazy.
And I agree. Matt is amazing. I do miss Avi but they couldn’t have done any better with a new base.
New subscriber. 🙂
Everyone in Pentatonix have a huge range.
Scott handles the bass!!! :)
We we knee deep in lockdown when this was released. It was perfect timing.
It's Scott that does the base. He did it when Avi took lead too. Matt is awesome too!!
One of the best PTX live version is Silent Night which they sang in a church. It's amazing.
If you want to check out Avi he did some great live and accustic versions of his songs from his home while on Covid isolation. Very impressive songs
I couldn't tell if you know that the original was by Tears for Fears in the '80s. While they take full credit for the lyrics, their rendition was fast, light, and poppy. A couple decades later, the movie _Donnie Darko_ revived the song, and gave it the slow, haunting melody we are used to today. So Pentatonix, was not covering the original; instead they were covering the completely different-sounding movie version. Some people seem to like the original, but every cover I have seen is _Donnie Darko's._ ⬅
My guess is that the ghostly images in the background were also a callback to the movie. It had themes of alternate realities and even a living dead.
Check out Aha Live in Star Vista, Singapore (Note Kevin is there, he just comes in after the start because he had to put away his cello). Also Popspring 2016. They have three of their original songs, plus the Evolution of Micheal Jackson.
This song is amazing. Come Along is an absolute must watch and would be a fun reaction. You were saying in the Daft Punk reaction how you cant help but move...Come Along is 1000% another one of those tunes. Edit after I got to the point when you said only live stuff lmao "Aha" Live Singapore the Star Vista is unfreakinreal. It's legit recorded on a cell phone but still hits incredibly hard. End edit
You need to check them out when they started on “The Sing Off” and follow them through their start. Phenomenal!
Pop spring 2016 is awesome and Superfruit stuff by Scott and Mitch- Imaginary Parties, Future Friends, Hurry Up, etc. There are also several Avi Kaplan originals that are definitely worth checking out - I’ll Get By, Born in California acoustic version video, Otherside, Full Moon, and lots more.
Kevin has never covered the bass line as far as any performance I have seen. It is always Scott if Matt or Avi are singing. Kevin is singing some of the bell tones with Kirstin at times here.
Definitely should check out some of their originals they came out with recently.
Happy Now and Be My Eyes are my top two.
I'm old enough to remember the Tears For Fears version in the 80s (hang on while I go get my cane...) and the original tempo is definitely andante - a far quicker clip than every cover I've ever heard of it. The thing that gets me is that this song works at both tempos, something that can't be said for 90% of lyrical music. The chosen tempo sets the mood, of course, and the PTX version matches the heavy/somber/thoughtful feel of the slower tempo with their close harmonies and extreme control of dynamics... which practically creates a new song. I'm convinced PTX can do anything, man.
I think this came out after their 'Home' EP and before their last Christmas album which Amazing Grace was the first song released. We were still mostly under quarantine. A very appropriate song for 2020.
I really have not heard Pentatonix release anything bad. I have listened to everything since The Sing Off.
You are right -- Matt is an awesome bass, and he brings a lot to the table. He just had the misfortune of following one of the 10 best basses on the planet. As for live stuff, since you've done Hallelujah, they have a live version available in a Christmas special. It's always a good thing to listen to even if you've listened to Hallelujah before because what you will find is that they sound pretty much the same as the recorded version. Their Popspring recording also has 3 or 4 live songs on it that are really good.
Stark, lush, haunting, luminous.
There are 3 songs I would love to hear them do." Calling you", "still loving you" and " its a man's world"...all three could use the beat box and the highs and lows in the vocals...would be epic!
Also look into Avi's A Capella Academy and Scott's AcaPop Kids (Kevin has also helped these kids with beatboxing)! They are amazing & it's nice to see them all passing along their secrets to the next generations! 💖
LIVE STUFF LIVE Aha. Live from Singapore
Matt is the bass but when Matt is taking the lead, Scott takes the bass. If you haven't listened to Sound of Silence by PTX, you should. The opening highlights the low registers that Scott can reach, and when Matt is singing, you can actually see Scott taking the bass line.
You have done a reaction to the PTX "Daft Punk" Official Video, so for a live version there is none more telling than the "Daft Punk Private Performance" on the Nick Riddell channel. It's Pentatonix back stage in a "green room" somewhere (looks like an office) with what appears to be just a couple of people, no microphones or any other enhancements or modifications of any kind. It appears the video was taken on a cell phone with the internal microphone mounted on a tripod, as simple and "straight" as you can get. Let us know how it compares to the original.
Also you have done Hallelujah "Official Version". Now do the live performance from their Christmas Special. I think (and several other reactors I've seen) think it's better than the original.
I love your reactions so keep up the great work.
David Draiman of Disturbed does amazing live performance on Conan O'Brian talk show few years back. He sings his take on Sound of Silence.
Be careful what you ask for,,, Live is great if you have a great mix but so many are from fans that not only are noisy in their own right but also singing just off pitch to give you that nasty warbling sound as if you were two Bb Trumpets trying to tune and one is off by maybe a quarter flat from the other. But you have to be prepared for that if you attend a Concert. I paid good money to hear the Group not the fans...JMPO...BTW they put on a Great Show. For their young ages in general you can't do anything but listen and watch in awe with the talents they are blessed with. Their arranging and Vocals are stellar. Enough said
Pentatonix Cover “Say Something” With Kevin Olusola on Cello
Great reaction. Thanks
Avi to Matt was the only change. No one else has come or gone.
Look at the live version "Love me when I don't," it came out a few days ago and is great. It's an original song🤍
