Someone just told me yesterday how good they thought i am and being that I’m always watching Guthrie and Tom I said “I appreciate it but I’m not that great” lol
"Clearly realise how much better a lot of people are than you, you're gonna be OK". Boy ain't that the truth. In my younger days I got a scholarship to study music in Vienna. I actually cried after first rehearsal. Bawled my eyes out. Being a musician is brutal, but beautiful.
Tom, it always does my heart good to hear you talk about how much you love your boys. I lost my son a year ago today. I never saw it coming. I raised him as a single dad, so I appreciate and understand some of the struggles you might be experiencing. Enjoy every day with your sons as if it was the last. I love your channel, you're one of a kind.
And that is why i retired from full time relationships when i started playing guitar (2.5 years ago) I refuse to give up my freedom! (i'm 58 though and had my fill of the ladies for the time being.) I am a guitcel!
900 videos means; if I’d have spent the time watching those videos practicing instead I’d be 1/1000th as good as you! Watched all of them, all the way through. Best UA-cam channel by far.
"Know your place, know what your weaknesses are..." Words to live by. There ain't no app for that. Your boys are lucky to have a father so grounded, to instill in them such wisdom. Cheers!
Homeskoolin the 10 dvd set!!! Bro your videos are priceless to players who want to grow !! Not to mention your a sold human being and live a damm cool life!!
I could spend all day watching and sifting through your vids picking up tasty morsels of guitar savvy. I recently discovered the channel and I'm thrilled. A no bullshit in your face, behind the curtain look for all the world to see. Thanks Tom
I always really enjoyed the “musical philosophy” the most!! The licks, tricks, and old gear is always amazing, but being able to hear 40+ years of musical wisdom is worth more than the former for me and as helped me in my professional career more than anything else! Thanks a lot uncle Larry, greetings from Cleveland, OH 🤟🏻😎🤟🏻
Just a huge thank you Tom for all you share with us, I’m sure there are thousands of us who really appreciate it and will do for the rest of our lives as we are all still learning everyday
The strat pairs nicely with my morning coffee. Just listening to the improv and tones is a masterclass man. Happy to pay attention while I can still afford to Larry.
❤hey Tom, you are OUR guitar guy. We know what we know like you know what you know. You’re the fit for my musical taste. Like none before, that’s restoration in musical hope. no matter what side of the note you are on. You are OUR guitar guy❤️ Skool
Cyber-existential crisis... you're channel is one of the most important/entertaining things in my life. Prolly doesnt mean a hill of beans to you but stay true pony boy
Tom can't say thanks enough for your channel and advice.. A few days ago you had mentioned "if a guitar doesn't feel or sound right, get rid of it" that really stuck with me. I sold a few guitars and went on a hunt for one that just fit. I found it. A 2003 Les Paul Special with hum buckers. The guitar was a little beat up and nothing special but just has magic in it. My point with this is I set down with this guitar and can't put it down, and new creative avenue has been open. Don't waist time on guitars that don't have some kind of magic in them. Best Advice ever. thank you so much
There are easier ways to be embarrassed. Man you are a mentor, and a friend. A true uncle. I have no one to shoot the shit with about guitars and I really appreciate these videos. Since corona days.
Watching your videos is like meeting an old friend and hear him talking of music, life in general and some considerations on how the world is geeting us crazy ! Makes our days lighter when we see the bell ringing on You tube Uncle tom is there Thank you !
In addition to being a gold mine of information and inspiration for the musical community, way down the road, your videos will be priceless treasured memories for your sons. What a wonderful thing for all concerned. . . . . . .
I started playing when I was 14... I'm 58 now. I'm no where near the level of playing I should be at. I see how you play and its why I'm here. You got nothing to feel bad about lol
This is so why I enjoy your channel Tom, you just done me on the cell phone thing although in defence you said it man, that gig sounded like it caught the essence of the t-shirt and good for giving Brett a call out, tell him he has gold in the can. Thanks for all those episodes of your life man.
Priceles , wisdom and advice from the one who truly knows what it takes and what counts... Thank you Tom...keep it up .. Your videos are the treasure! Super greatful 🙏✨️🤙🎵🎸
❤hey Tom, sure it’s NO SECRET I am your musical devotee by my sweetest truth, however your ability to know by your PHENOMENALLY gifted musical ear what is best for the song is STELLAR. You are a musical prodigy with a feel that is EVIDENT and that MATTERS!!!!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
The opening riffs remind me of 'Little Feat' it had that bluesy/quirk - not saying it is LF, just reminds me. Always a pleasure to see you Tom, yes I started in 1971, I should be much better
Really loved your videos from the Underdog with Guthrie Trapp! Kind of reminds me of the clubs and the vibe Austin had in the 70's and 80's before they let it all slip away. More performance videos please.
Tom: A tremendous journal you made of so much learning for us and it’s very entertaining. Great music you are giving us so much. Every episode offers us education. Thank you. You are hard on yourself and you are striving to improve always. We purchase all the music of your playing.
We all love it when someone says “You should do” and then tells you to do something that takes a lot of work. Well here it comes. You have sprinkled through your videos how to set up guitars to the way you like them. In this video you dropped that you like a strat neck pickup low because it’s super airy. Great advice, thanks. Also the Ilitch dealie, I’d never heard of that before. You have also gone over a SG Special and how to set up the pickups. Once again I can’t thank you enough. I’m sure that you have setup preferences for each kind of guitar and can articulate why you like them. That’s something I and a lot of your listeners would happily pay for. We haven’t gone through a big pile of strats to know any better on how to set them up to get the most out of them. So thank you, some of us will pay attention and take note when you slip out your guitar setup wisdom.
If you stop I'm gonna come down to Nashville from the north like Sherman marched through Atlanta, Uncle Larry!!! Kidding of course but please I look forward to these as do so many. You feel like an old friend to us, giving us a very unique view into the life of a guitar slinger for hire.
Wayne Shorter once said, sometimes it's better to reach for a note and miss it than it is to reach for a note and hit it. Because what it does, it's about the humanity. It's about the aspiration. And the audience relates to that humanity because it's, you know, metaphorically, it's what we all do. We reach for things, we don't always get them. -David Sanborn (1945-2024)
Larry you is a god of six never ever forget this mate ! i don’t think you realise what on earth you did on the firebird only 2 sleeps ago , you literally opened some kind of rock n roll portal and channeled all our forefathers of the electric guitar absolutely mind blowing tom !👀💯💯 love ya man
You sounded great live. I didn’t realize how loud It was in that bar til I saw Guthrie. That you don’t get from videos. The dynamics, the beer and despair in the air lol.
This was a really good one. It's been almost 46 years since I got my first guitar at Dick Lurie Music in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Doubt I have as many hours in as you. And if I do, they sadly haven't been quite as fruitful. But still keep at it, frustrated that I'm not better, but from time to time, realizing that I've improved a little bit. Grateful my body still mostly allows me to keep at it. Wish I'd enjoyed practicing as much at 15 as I do now. Good to remember that there are a lot of ways to be good at the guitar, and being dedicated to any one of them is its own challenging journey. Still hard sometimes not to wish that you could be good at 20 different styles of playing.
I too am a firm believer in harsh self criticism and self discipline. I wish I could say the same for my children and the people I come in contact with. Thanks for another great video Tom.
Thanks for working so hard on your music and sharing it with the world Tom. I started playing when I was 12, started playing a lot more when I was 19...that was 35 years ago. When I start to contemplate that amount of time and where I stand now as a musician, well I try not to think about that, haha! In the final analysis, whether a player is fantastic or mediocre, if they or anyone else gets some enjoyment out of what they express, that is what really matters.
I've been playing bass a thousand years, and its the only thing that I've tried so hard to be good at. And now recently, the guitar just called and wants me back. 🤤
I’ve become obsessed with a specific guitar UA-camr recently for this exact thing. It’s a train wreck to watch them overconfidently project themselves in the world. I can’t look away.
Philosophy from you Uncle Larry is good stuff. Yep, its all hard...guitar is for who always take the long road. And if i have one once of hope, it is knowing i am in need of a LOT more work. Probably haven't done myself any favors by being interested in so many kinds of guitar playing. Thanks as always for sharing life with us down this long road.
The cell phone cameras sounded awesome - happy to pickup the scraps - looking forward to hearing a good recording of it. Used to listen warped copies of of copies of tapes and records on small 1 speaker cassette players as a kid…
The Senn bridge pickup sounds like a mellowed out, reliable old dog hanging on the front porch. The ‘63 bridge pickup sounds like an angry barking at the neighbors walking by.
Come on Larry, it’s so you can talk to us, your friends! Not really sure what you get out of it but we get a nice warm fuzzy feeling, a chuckle and a little perspective alignment. Off to CA for 3 weeks of music and earthquakes!

The years I have been playing I am nowhere near what I should be. I also say I can play a bit but what keeps me going is hearing people who are really talented and dedicated. I like to go and see players who are much better than me , and that is most them.
This might quietly be one of the most important videos he's ever made. I myself have struggled with the question of "what style do I want to be good at?" I've never met a good musician who is satisfied with their playing, only wankers are.
FACT
@@501chorusecho Man, do I love my playing...🤣
Someone just told me yesterday how good they thought i am and being that I’m always watching Guthrie and Tom I said “I appreciate it but I’m not that great” lol
So that would be a satisfied wanker
We're always harder on ourselves than anyone else is.
Dude. Players will be watching these videos 600yrs from now.

I know I will
Guitarist's hall of fame!
Posting 900 videos means that you love us and we love you.
...posting all the videos means that you are a very giving person, Tom, and we appreciate it...thanks...
Absolutely!
Our love will not fade away
And original. You never know what's coming next.
You have given us 900 videos of knowledge, entertainment and hope for the guitar as a musical instrument. No BS just straight up guitar savagery
I am in my 80's and am still trying to play. I keep learning. Always something new to learn...
We crave your videos. Thanks for 4 years of enlightenment.
I love your channel, you're one of a kind.
man i am so sorry....my biggest fear....
I love how when you were married you were out in the cold garage and now you have your amps in the kitchen. I can’t wait to be divorced!
And that is why i retired from full time relationships when i started playing guitar (2.5 years ago) I refuse to give up my freedom! (i'm 58 though and had my fill of the ladies for the time being.) I am a guitcel!
Love that mix of cool funk rhythm and sophisticated chords. Simple but so cool.
900 videos means; if I’d have spent the time watching those videos practicing instead I’d be 1/1000th as good as you!
Watched all of them, all the way through.
Best UA-cam channel by far.
thank you my dude
Hey Tom, when you give us your philosophical rants we learned the most!!! Thank you!!!🤘🎸🤘
What keeps bringing me back is the musicality you bring, not just fretboard fireworks. I just really enjoy the music and the chat.
"Know your place, know what your weaknesses are..." Words to live by. There ain't no app for that. Your boys are lucky to have a father so grounded, to instill in them such wisdom. Cheers!

You have become a significant part of our lives. Every day with Uncle Larry is a good day!
The destination is the journey. Thanks for the music, knowledge and laughs, Unk
Larry wisdom is the best! Thank you!
“It’s all about the journey”. The older I get; that’s really all it’s about. Great stuff as always 🤘🏼
I always really enjoyed the “musical philosophy” the most!! The licks, tricks, and old gear is always amazing, but being able to hear 40+ years of musical wisdom is worth more than the former for me and as helped me in my professional career more than anything else!

Yea the footage papa got looked and sounded phenomenal
Tom, you remind me heavily of a late relative of mine who was a musical role model, and in ways incredibly relatable. It is refreshing and inspiring.
that kitchen tone just knocks me out . thanks tom
Just a huge thank you Tom for all you share with us, I’m sure there are thousands of us who really appreciate it and will do for the rest of our lives as we are all still learning everyday
The live gig was exciting to listen to. Great interplay amongst the band and great, soulful singing on good tunes! Enjoyed it!
The strat pairs nicely with my morning coffee. Just listening to the improv and tones is a masterclass man. Happy to pay attention while I can still afford to Larry.

Oof sorry to hear that.
Great to hear a shout-out for Clint Strong! Amazing player!!
Awesome that you mentioned Clint Strong. Love the generosity you give out in your videos
Dude !! I immediately looked him up .. the first dang vid on UA-cam of him with haggard is a mind blower
We bloody love ya Larry. Just keep doing you brother man 💛
One of the best parts of my day dude …. Appreciate everything you do on the channel thanks man.
I’ve read it takes 10k hours to become world class on most disciplines so, yeah , 3x world class seems to be a fair description of Uncle Larry!
The amount of time you spend playing shows brother! And what you've shown us has helped me immensely! Thanks bro. Keep'em coming!✌👍

A cell phone video from a garage in Nashville I found life changing
I started playing when I was 14... I'm 58 now. I'm no where near the level of playing I should be at. I see how you play and its why I'm here. You got nothing to feel bad about lol

Wow!!!! That 1963 sounds awesome on your hands Tom!!!!

The amount of time I invested in trying to be something not, both on the guitar and in general. Truer words.
Indeed, I just checked out Brett's video and you guys were killing it!
We all love it when someone says “You should do” and then tells you to do something that takes a lot of work. Well here it comes. u make our lives better that's the truth
Super excited about the Brett concert !! I watched the videos and they were great!!
I remember way back you said " I wanna play like Doug Rappoport " proof you 're not so egotistical to not acknowledge another 's greatness
If you stop I'm gonna come down to Nashville from the north like Sherman marched through Atlanta, Uncle Larry!!! Kidding of course but please I look forward to these as do so many. You feel like an old friend to us, giving us a very unique view into the life of a guitar slinger for hire.

Don't be so harsh on your bad self, Tom. As an insurance man for 40 years, sometimes i feel like i have had 8 years of experience 5 times!
Larry you is a god of six never ever forget this mate !

That Brett Papa footage is the bomb. I’ve really been digging on that stuff. The sound is great!
This is my kind of stuff; never, stop. Thank you for the lessons, but the words of wisdom? Just a look at life; so, Rock On!
You sounded great live. I didn’t realize how loud It was in that bar til I saw Guthrie. That you don’t get from videos. The dynamics, the beer and despair in the air lol.
Keep after it, you'll get there! Cheers Tom!!
I love Deep Thoughts with Uncle Larry :-)

100% true. We all have strengths and weaknesses. Know yourself. Accept it and move forward.
Plucky! Thanks Tom x

Happy New '63 🎸👍
The cell phone cameras sounded awesome - happy to pickup the scraps - looking forward to hearing a good recording of it. Used to listen warped copies of of copies of tapes and records on small 1 speaker cassette players as a kid…
Another great jam Tom
The Senn bridge pickup sounds like a mellowed out, reliable old dog hanging on the front porch.
The ‘63 bridge pickup sounds like an angry barking at the neighbors walking by.
Brent Papa is our savior - for us folks not in nashville this is gonna be pure gold. LFG!!!!!!!
It's always been the journey Tom! Way cool bud!
The 63 you just bought sounds like a real keeper .. !!
Great advice Tom! 🔥👌🏽👌🏽
Come on Larry, it’s so you can talk to us, your friends! Not really sure what you get out of it but we get a nice warm fuzzy feeling, a chuckle and a little perspective alignment. Off to CA for 3 weeks of music and earthquakes!
Hey Tom, Well said!!! That 63 has some serious SPANK!!!! Very nice!
I was always amazed by Jeff Healy’s way of playing.
All the styles of guitar kick my ass. I’ve never met a genre that wasn’t hard to play.
The '63 has the most present, full and articulate bridge pickup I've ever heard, that didn't have a tele-style metal plate soldered to the bottom
Sometimes when the beer kicks in I tend to talk a bit too much about playing the guitar for years ,but when someone hints that I should bring my guitar next time I go into panic mode and tell them I am shit and they would be bored in Seconds.
