KORN - David Silveria's Nu Metal Drum Sound | Recreating Iconic Drum Sounds

No other band shaped the sound of Nu Metal like Korn did. In the 1990's they came up with a totally unique sound that set them apart from all other bands out there. Even though the sound changed throughout the years they are still super recognizable and kept their sound signature even though there were some line up changes. In this video we want to concentrate on Korn's first albums with David Silveria on drums.

@ArtOfDrumming Great video! I loved those early korn drums sounds! I have the samples but they sounds completely different from the groove in the pack + they are printed with ambience / reverb. Do I need to remove the reverb, eq / comp the samples?
He had a piccolo snare early on I believe.
David’s drum sound is absolutely iconic.
Thank you for putting some respect on Silveria’s drumming! Side note - Tim Alexander of Primus was a huge influence of his.
To Many Puppies influenced Blind…
First album is untouchable. The snare sound is magic. Recreate THAT sound. (great job on Falling Away from Me)
While I ultimately prefer the first album, I personally prefer the drum sound of Life Is Peachy
Anyone who can play Chi and play it anywhere near how David can play it is a master.
David Silveria is such an underrated drummer!
Dunno who you been talking to but he is no way an underrated drummer he is held in high regard for his groove and feel
Meh. Ray has always been a better drummer. He made David's grooves sound and feel even better.
@@walpurgisnacht9234 didn't say who was better was addressing him being underrated stay on topic dude
@@walpurgisnacht9234 i respectfully disagree. I do think Ray is a killer drummer tho.
@@walpurgisnacht9234 The key words in what you said is "David's grooves".
That said, i don't agree with you. Its like saying "john doe is a better you than yourself". Dosen't make sense.
Ray is a fantastic drummer, but David had that certain something nobody can copy… Both make the band unique in their own way.
David grooved much harder and that was a really important part of their sound IMO. Ray tends to overplay on the old stuff.
Ray is a good drummer, but being funky isn't something you learn. You either have it or you don't. David had a lot of funk in him
david silveria is my number one drum inspiration the grooves and ghost notes are unmatched
Jhon otto are not bad too. Who is your others inspiration ?
If you need an amazing technical drummer that keeps everyone in time, all the time, you definitely need Ray. But for a Korn sound, David Silveria groovy paste is what you need. He is such an iconic nu metal drummer, nobody can replace him.
That Follow the Leader snare is THE snare sound of the 90s imo. It just sums up the whole decade, and it fits in so many musical contexts. It would easily be happy in a typical Pop track, as well as R&B, Hip-Hop, and---of course--modern styles of metal. It just has that X-factor. Very "live" sounding.
David is one of two drummers that inspired me to pick up the sticks and rock. His grooves were undeniable off the first Korn album. Thank you David 🤘🥁
Same 🥲
Same. Who is the second?
@@clivegeorge9740 That would be John Stanier of Helmet. His style is roughly the foundation of how I’ve always wanted to play. Milquetoast, In the meantime, and Birth Defect are just a handful of songs he's kicked some total ass on
I can't believe you didn't cover the 1st & 2nd albums. That sound & groove was exactly what made them groundbreaking and defined the nu metal sound and youskipped it; those rich and complex jazz sounds turned to metal that were largely lost on all the following records
probably becouse of lack of stems/multitrack on net... hehe only all SYOTOS; III; TPOT; Kidnap Sidney Clap; Word Up; Freak On A Leash; Falling Away From Me are here ;)
if you're a drummer over the age of 30 and have never played along to freak on a leash, YOU'RE A COP.
Falling away from me was one of the first songs I ever learned on drums
48 but i was fired
i just couldnt turn all that coke in, long work hours
BLOCK
It's a hard song to play correctly
I'm not a die hard Korn fan and I don't make many friends when I say that I like Ray Luzier's style even more. And I would absolutely love to see a video about his drum sound.
But Silveria definetely has made some unique and iconic drum beats with the early Korn stuff.
Luzier is an outstanding drummer by himself, but Silveria's drumming is just ICONIC
Luzier is a musician cameleon. He can play almost any kind of music but Silviera style is so damn unique. Hard to replicate his grooves.
it was a perfect match between Fieldy's groove and David's drumming@@stevemuzak8526
David inspired me to start drumming. I remember practicing at home, before taking drum lessons, and trying to show my teacher what I was practicing and he was like what is with all these ghost notes and loved it. Opened his eyes to David's drumming style. Not taking away from Ray, but his drumming does nothing for me, David really helped shape Korn's signature sound
Video of Ray Luzier would be amazing!!! He has such a great modern sound🤘
Modern? Boring to me 😂 sounds like normal drum,David has metal rawness but hip hop boomy sound
@@GregKhar-NU-Metalhead2000 Agreed ray does way too many fills it’s just over doing it at that point
Nothing in comparison to dave
Luzier can't play Right Now and Got The Life...
More like computer sound
One of the drummers that inspired me the most. He always used his toms in such a creative way to make grooves. And together with Fieldy's rhythmic slapping they had one of the most interesting rhythm section of the whole nu-metal era.
Will never forget when I first seen David and Korn for that matter. 1996 first gig they played in the UK Donington 🇬🇧. Absolutely changed my love of music
David Silveria is by far one of the most important drummer in metal music. His style is outstanding.
I know for a fact, that that snare sound was unique because he used a Remo Falams smooth white marching head on the snare. I did the same thing back in the day and sounded identical.
Ray Luzier is maybe technically the better drummer but David Silveria had much more character by creating those bad ass beats with his unique drum sound.
The first 4 albums are timeless masterpieces!
You've recreated his sound exactly. Well done bro. David is a legend.
Silveria is groove, rhythm and soul; For me, Silveria's work in Korn marks a before and after sound in nu metal, Korn's top albums are the ones that were recorded with the original lineup, Luzier is an excellent drummer, maybe I'm getting old but with the departure of Fieldy the sound of Korn is not so Korn anymore! Congratulations on his great research work, top level!
Guys this is fantastic! You nailed the recreation. Would love to hear you guys do this for Around the Fur or White Pony by Deftones!
This is awesome guys, sounds absolutely amazing. Really great work on talking about the history of Korn and David’s drumming, can’t stop watching this. One of my fav drummers. Thank you for the great explanation of how you recreated the kit sound and excellent performance. 🤘🤘🤘rock on guys.
You guys should do drum sound videos for Limp Bizkit, Deftones, Linkin Park, Mudvayne, Incubus and System Of A Down. i would love to know how to get that super low puffy thud of a bass drum sound that late 90's early 2000's era of music is famous for 😊
I think they already did Linkin Park.
That's all *NÜ Metal* right there!
Yea they did Linkin already but I'd love to see these other ones. They even did Joey Jordison before!
I'm not super knowledgeable on this channel, but based off the videos I've watched, they seemingly only do videos on songs that they can get their hands the versions without the drum track, presumably from Rockband based on the crowd sound you can hear at 7:34 (as crowd sound was an extra track that they sometimes included on the Rockband games).
If true, I know for a fact Mudvayne currently only have Happy? released on Rockband which obviously misses off everything else, especially their LD50 stuff, Limp Bizkit have a couple of songs like My Way and Re-arranged, Linkin Park with In The End, Numb, Given Up etc, System of a Down with Spiders, Chop Suey, Aerials etc. I'm not sure about Deftones and Incubus.
Great video and as always amazing drum sound recreations!!
David Silveria was one of my favorite drummers to get me into drums. Absolutely love this video
That kit is beautiful. Love the finish.
I remember all the covers and articles in drum magazines about him 😊
And let’s talk about that magnificent drumset 😍
I like these videos. I’ve always wondered how these cool drummers tune their kits, and these videos also help me learn more about how tuning drums work
Wow. Excellent job matching the Korn Drum sound! The snare sounds were especially impressive 🤯
If you're gonna try and replicate his sound, gotta do his early sound from the Debut album.
Great vid awesome playing 🤘
Amazing!
The drumming is identical!
Stella job on the tones!
You guys absolutely nailed his snare tone on Falling Away From Me! Well done!
you think you guys may ever try recreating the drum sounds off the first two albums? The way his snare drum sounded like a cannon was my own personal favorite. Also, I'd say David's drumming on the first two albums was his most chaotic and creative.
Legit ass drum channel. You guys are dope. Much love from California. A state slowly going down in flames.
Dude I don’t know you who you are but this setup is my dream . I can whole day with this . I really liked your sound and creation ! Good job 10/10 .
100% would love to see a Ray Luzier video. His tones and playing are incredible.
Meh. All technique, no soul.
@@inconnector are you sure we're talking about the same person?
Who’d he play with?
@@charlzthedrummer He’s Korn’s current drummer. Also played for David Lee Roth.
His sound is all over UA-cam dude wtf lol
I was heavily listening to KoRn back in high school! I remembered David used a Tama piccolo snare with bronze shell. Especially during the Freak On A Leash era.
Awesome job!
Dude I’ve never seen this channel and I saw this, I thought it was something cheesy lol but nope 👍🏻 awesome man🙏🏻❤️ love David and the sound ( follow the leader) had David is iconic 🙏🏻✅ still one of my beginning drummer inspiration. This touched my heart thank you guys for taking the time to display this
You are awesome!!! Whats the tuning on Hz or Notes of the snare drum for Falling AFM??
Excellent travail! Merci les gars
been jamming to korn a lot lately, i admire their drumming with how simple and groovy the beats are🤌🏾🔥
I’m not a huge Korn fan but I definitely really like the set up and the way the overall sound was achieved. Also, nice n clean drumming style. Thanks for the post!
finally props to this man!!!!!!!
ive been on a silvera stunlock this entire month! CHI AND somebody someone, make me bad, ect..
Man you're a Genius!
If I can be critical for a second , ONE big factor you're missing in this recreation of his sound is how hard he hits the drums. Now replay Freak OAL ,only hit the drums about as hard as you can and dial it back 10%. NOW you'll truly have his sound.
Watch him play live from the 90s and he's smashing the shit out of the drums.
I bought a Starclassic Performer kit a couple months ago, and it was all because of David. David's drum sounds on Korn and Life is Peachy are what inspired me to play Tama drums and Paiste Cymbals.
Silveria has an interesting groove and created the iconic parts we love. But Luzier just owns anyone I can think of in Rock/Nu Metal. He's the octopus of drummers! Make one for him too!
Ray has zero feel. Great drummer, but yeah I don’t enjoy his playing
Funny since Ray has a hard time playing David’s stuff from the first 3 albums….
@@thelegionary07 he told you that?
@@thelegionary07i guarantee you he doesn’t 😂
Great topic and video! I was thinking he used a 13” snare. Cranked the 14” for an iconic sound!
Oh wow, i didnt know he uses those crashers on the "falling" verses. I always thought it was the open hi hat bell. Nice job!
Love this!
Yes!! This is awesome
Fantastic video, I would love a video with the sound of Ray Luzier too
Fckn love David man. His grooves and pocket were unreal
The first 2 albums were such a big influence on my drumming along with Joeys drumming on Slipknot's self titled and Iowa Ross Robinson had a lot to do with their overall sound. Then I got into the heavier more technical stuff around 13 yrs old. But you can hear their influences on me on my first 2 demos with my band Gods Fallen.
Awesome video! Would be cool to see you guys do Ghost and Iron Maiden as well. Much love from Norway!🇧🇻
Nice❤❤❤ & I love it ❤❤❤. By the way how to create Deftones drum sound Abe cunningham is the drummer. Some Deftones songs such as In Change ( House of flies) , Mineriva & Be quiet and drive ( Far Away).
As always everyone always does a great job. When will you recreate
the legendary sound of Nick Mason?
🤟🤟🤟
He has a hip hop-ness about his drumming. At the same time I hear advanced jazz drumming.
excellent setup didnt realise taking my shirt off gave me hidden drumming powers
Amazing video! Can we get a recreation of david silveria's drum tone on the first 2 albums?
Silveria revolución el groove del metal metiendo funk y lineas estilo hip hop aparte su configuración de batería si era diferente para lo que se veía en esos tiempos
I NEED the Ray Luzier set now!!
that SLP snare amazing video btw.✌
Would love multisamples of that snare!
I agree they need to sell multilayered - round robin samples of each drum. I purchased the Fleetwood Mac samples to test them and only had 3 samples (low, med & high velocities) for each drum. In this day & age with drum replacement so good and now there are many edrum modules importing multilayered - round robin samples. For one snare sound there should be 25- 40 samples minimum but 65- 90 samples (very quiet- very loud velocities) for great realism, this numbers can be halved for toms & kick samples. Art Of Drumming sound on UA-cam is very high quality but the samples they sell are very poor quality.
Sliveria was a trailblazer for sure. Such a groove player. A side by side isolated drum sound comparison would have topped this off nicely.
I wish you have you used the bell brass piccolo snare david used during the life is peachy/follow the leader era. And the 18x20 kick david always used.
Awesome Tuning !!!
Nailed the drum sound! damn.
Deftones Around the Fur next please
Every song is a diferent snare btw
White Pony would be great too
Great video! Nice Mike Bordin grooves, make a video about him! 🙏🏼
Awesome sound, Silveria made them iconic for me.
No Paste Rudes :(
Daves drumming on first 2 albums is the sound you want to go for.
This is awesome. I think you nailed Silveria's sound. Hope you can do a Josh Freese APC sound.
😅
To have davids drum sound you need to kill your drum set with each hit like he does.😅
My band opened up for his new band breaking in a sequence. Seeing him live in the club we played i noticed he hits fooooooookin harrrrrrrrd.
Got some pictures with him and got a couple drum sticks from him. Awesome nice guy .
Great job with this video guys. Keep em comin!
Ohh hat snare crack is beautiful. I love my snare tight like that.
you guys are wonderful. thank you for recreating one of my drum heroes. can you recreate terri bozio's cairo? please
PLEASE do Abe Cunningham of Deftones... The album Diamond Eyes has such an incredible drum sound. White Pony drums are considered more iconic because they came a decade sooner, but I really think the Diamond Eyes drums outshine them, personally. Incredible series, thank you for creating these videos!
Would love to see a video on Chris Adler from Lamb of God. His drum sounds have been pretty consistent, especially on Ashes of the Wake to Wrath.
Really nice.
David is always (ok, not always) "behind the click". He often drags.. That's one of his main characteristics, in addition to its excellent sound and feel...
One of a kind.
Ray is great, ofcourse.. but he is just antoher type of drummer.
You can really tell the difference when someone plays Freak on a Leash on the click rather than dragging it like David because it sounds too rushed.
@@ledheavy26 Exactly.
should've done this with the second album.. the piccolo snare was awesome
Subscribed ✅ btw drummer is on point for this session too🙏🏻
Sweet
You guys should do one for Dave A from Pearl Jam!
Another great video. Ray Luizer would be a good video to see. I’m still looking forward to seeing a video of recreating both Abe Cunningham from Deftones, Justin Foley from Killswitch engage (specifically the album End of Heartache), and if possible, Alex Bent from Trivium. The last one is definitely tough drumming, but I know that you can do it Pascal. Keep up the great work
Nice suggestions. Already working on the Deftones one to happen :)
@@ArtOfDrumming Alright, keep up the great work.
Yes do a ray version also please he's awesome. I love David's drum sound too.
Yes for Ray!! 🤘
Yes do a Luzier episode!!! With a huge awesome looking drumrack with it
You should definitely make a video about Ray's drum sound too!!! I'd really like to see you do a video on Scott Rockenfield from Queensryche and do the song Eyes of a Stranger!!
In the meantime drummers must be very proud when they get honored in that great videos produced by you!
His best sound was the combination of his snare choice and live engineering work during 2003-2004. That was peak right there.
You guys definitely need to do some Limp Bizkit recreation of the Chocolate Starfish Era ❤❤
100% that drum sound is unbelievable
I wish you focused more on his piccolo snare sound, great vid regardless
