  • Today Melissa and I started staining and sealing the woodshed, I am very pleased with the Ready Seal we bought, I just have to figure out the best way to apply it. It works great on rough cut lumber off the mill and Im sure it would be a great stain sealant for fences, decks, sheds, or any wood that you want to protect from the elements.

Mike I'm a retired fence builder and I would stain our fences with the same type of sprayer you purchased and it worked fine but with a different stain product. We would have a guy with a roller following the guy spraying. No matter how careful ,the product will run down the boards and our product would spray on a wider span than what your sprayer was pushing out of your spray tip.

I had a guy visit my neighborhood while it was finishing up being built. He did my fence for $350. He had a few 5 gallon buckets and a huge auto detailing sponge. He soaked up the sponge and wiped each panel, then he had an asistant follow behind him with a 8" brush to back brush and avoid drips and runs. They worked quick and covered alot of area fast. The sponge really helped get in between the panels. I was really pleased with the outcome.

I have been a residential painter for the past 16 years and I enjoy it very much. My advice for you is to get an airless sprayer, spray with a 213 tip and back roll all surfaces. It’s best to apply heavy and lay-off with a 1/2 roller nap. When the roller is soaked, you can unload it on a dry area off the woodshed that is next to be stained (so you won’t have double coated areas). I’m happy to answer any questions that arise. I’d offer my help but I’m in northern Michigan and that’s a hike for me for half a days work. Lol.

Great product MIKE, just pump up the sprayer until it gets tight and keep it pumped up tight. This is stain and not water so it takes a lot of pressure to make it spray!! I know it is thin but not as thin as water. I installed a tire air valve in my tanks and use my air compressor to pressure up all my spray bottles. Works great!!! Try it.

Mike, I once painted a house for my cousin and he had an old cellar house he wanted painted also. The cellar house siding was old rough lumber that hadn't been painted in about 30 years. I tried using a brush and a roller and it was going to take a lot of paint and a lot of time to do a small building. I bought a Wagner power sprayer and it did a fantastic job. I still have it and love it, especially for rough cut lumber. It doesn't atomize the paint so bad that you get all that over spray like an air sprayer. You get a little but not too bad. They are well worth the cost. It will work on thin stain or a good thick latex.

Ready seal is the best , I mostly use an airless paint sprayer and immediately back brush an area like 6’x6’ On area’s where you don’t want over spray , I hand brush it on. I also lay down plastic sheeting for over spray.

Yes you are getting better at the selection. Yes buy the thin natural tones, the will soak in better. You may have to thin the stain,to spray. I thin mine when i do. That roller is doing a good job.

Well too late maybe for this time. But for in the future I highly recommend using a stain pad. They have them on Amazon shur-line 9 inch pad with handle $9.05. I got mine from Lowes. I stained my deck and fence this past fall. After having a deck for 30+ years and a wood fence for 17 years. And many hours staining and using different apllication methods. I can say these pads are the only way to go. Fast no mess no waste. Try them you will LOVE them! I promise. Rough wood will tear them fairly easy. I just learned to use less pressure on those boards that were rough. So worth the money.

I've used a hand pump sprayer, Wagner power sprayer, and roller/brush method for apply fence stain. The hand pump sprayer did not work that well. Using a lower price point Wagner sprayer, worked quite well and the stain lasted just as long as the roller/brush method. I used Olympic stain (thin type, not the semi-solid) in all of my applications. I got about 5 years out of the stain before it faded enough to need a pressure wash and re-stain.

Hey M&M, good morning. Finally a question I can answer, what me and my crew (2 guys) have always done is use a 9" long nap roller cover on a full size frame with a four or six ft. pole ( adjustable is best ) working out of a five gallon bucket with a roller screen, apply as much as the wood wants and then back brush to work it in always keeping a wet edge. Hope that helps! Love the look that people are talking about!😂😂✌🏻️

As someone how has done many stainings of decks for customers, I found this product to be the best yet. I chose to use the roller method to be the best and use a medium-size brush to stain the sides of the boards to really make a nice finish. This product is oil-based and will beat all other products oil or water-based. I do work for many very off customers who expect perfection and long-lasting products. Spraying does not give as good of results and the overspray creates more work and clean up.

Used Ready Seal on a 110' of fencing built with 6' white cedar panels. Wife and I brushed it on each panel, front and back, before mounting them to the posts. The 5 gal size was just enough, and the results looked fantastic. I'll try a sprayer in a few years (hoping 4-5) when it needs another application, as it's pretty thin, and should spray fine.

I have not read all the comments so maybe this has been mentioned already. Get a good pump up sprayer with a brass wand and nozzle. Pump it up until you cannot pump anymore. Keep the pressure high and back brush as you go. We have a log house and we stain it this way every 3 years. One person can stain the whole house with this method in two days using a man lift. Also wear latex gloves. A plastic painters suit is great also because it splashes a lot. I use a product called Woodguard. It has UV and insect protection.

Pro's to a sprayer is you get into the cracks without runs , cons ...........it's a micro coverage , a roller / brush puts more product on contact so better penetration ...........I've used both and your sprayer is not performing , should get a nice fan so adjust the tip , should screw in and out which is how you vary the fan ...........good looking product !

I have stained my white pine log cabin several times over the last 18 years. I tried an airless sprayer that pulls from the can of stain directly but I still had to back brush to work the stain in then I had to clean the sprayer which takes a while. No time saved at all. I now use only a 4" brush right out of the can. A Purdy staining brush works best. Cheaper brushes do not hold enough stain or clean up as well so they are too much work. I enjoy your channel and look forward to your next projects.

It Provides leverage and additional distance overhead and below. Plus saves bending over each time you apply more stain / paint to the roller.

Over here in Kent in the UK we have barns that are very very old because they were painted with a black tar. With that in mind, I decided to experiment with Creosote (Creocote) mixed 60/40 with old Diesel sump oil. (Creosote comes in light and dark only!) Choosing the light one, I painted my soft wood shed, doors and garden gates. 15 years later, during the lockdown, I've just had to do then again. The wood was not rotten at all after all that time. I have a large cedar workshop that I painted with creosote just about 4 years ago, and it needs doing again already. Problem is, it does come up very rustic, but also very black when mixed with old sump oil, and the part my wife doesn't like is that it will still blacken your hand when you touch it 15 years later. But if you only want to paint every 15 years, give it a go. Old oil is free, and 5litres of creosote is as cheap as £5. That's about 3 dollars in foreign money. Stay safe all of you and keep them videos coming!

But I found the tinting in the product clogged the sprayer. Even used a paint strainer, but the solid particles still clogged the tip. Same problems with the pump sprayer.

I have done the dance with cheap sprayer too. I found a flat brush, pad meant for decks, on extending pole with paint tray is best for me. Fastest, even, apply with best reach.

Check the container for thinning for spraying. Most things I ever used called for that for that type of application in order for it to spread out in the fan pattern. I am not really experienced with spraying, but have painted quite a bit. It may be better with the thinning and work with higher pressure the sprayer can stand for atomizing will help.

Use the roller Mike. I sprayed my fence about 10 yrs ago and within 3 yrs the stain was peeling off. like you said you need to work it in to the wood. Great job buy the way.

Need much higher pressure in the sprayer. Try increasing the pressure by using more pumps. Another option is an airless sprayer... they are more expensive but more versatile, the Graco Magnum 25xx series (~ $250) is a good example.

I have stained a lot of decks and the best way I found is either a commercial sprayer or a brush. And if you are not going to use the sprayer that much you could rent one. But a good stain brush works great. Love your videos.

Mike I just stained 1,000 feet of 7 foot tall privacy fence (Yellowood) with Cabot's Australian Timber Oil (Natural). Started out with your $20 sprayer, that lasted 15 minutes. Purchased a Graco Project Airless sprayer at Lowes ($289) + a nozzle extension, keeps you away form the spray and saves your back. Buy your stain in a 5 gal pail, drop the hose in and spray. Spray it on and back brush it i with
a deck and fence brush (Lowes or Shermin Williams). You'll spray the back of your shed in 15-20 minutes. Follow the instructions to start and clean the sprayer and it will last for years.

I have used that sprayer for various products and it worked well. The first thing to do is put it together and try it with plain old water in to set it up and get use to it, this way you find out if it has anything wrong with it and you don't waste any product. The stain should be poured through a paint strainer when filling the sprayer to avoid little particles clogging the nozzle and you have to pump the sprayer up to the max to get a good misting pattern. The streaming pattern that I saw was either #1 not enough pressure, #2 partially clogged nozzle or to thick of product .

The people you may have talk to was using an air-less professional spray rig. You can rent them at any rental center. But to add, there is a little bit of a learning curve. For clean-up is usually just soap & water, except for some lacquer or oil base. Just check the clean-up direction on the can.

We've stained our log home twice now, its plenty of brushing and rolling, even with a Graco pump sprayer! But the sprayer is very easy to operate, applies plenty of stain, but must be back brushed/rolled. The shed looks really good with that stain. Renting a sprayer might be more cost effective, not sure.

Try a 5 gal. bucket with a mesh to get excess off the roller the mesh hangs on the inside of the bucket on an angle can be bought at Lowes or home depot paint dept. pro painters use them instead of a roller tray you also need an extension handle for the roller way much more efficient hope that helps use a tight nap roller also

Spraying is definitely the way to go. Go rent a sprayer electric sprayer, you can adjust the pressure to get the right penetration. Might have to have someone go behind you. We put two coats on our 30 x40 garage in about 7.5 hours. The rented sprayer will hold 5 gallons of stain. It lasted for 8 years before we had to do it again. The exterior is T111, don’t know if that would make a difference.

Mike and Melissa, the stain looks great!! I have a fence staining project coming up and will definitely consider the Ready Seal. A rented or purchased airless sprayer (Graco X7 - around $400.00) would be the fastest way to get it done but the spray tanks work fine for smaller jobs like this. Use a tip with a wide spray pattern and adjust (twist) the tip to fine tune the pattern and volume. Consider re-stirring and thinning the stain if it won't go through the nozzle. I've stained my fences multiple times with good result using a spray tank. Have to use the right spray tip, keep the pressure up and have someone chase you with a roller on a pole. It goes extremely fast. Your whole shed could be stained in an hour our so with a spray tank and a helper on a roller. If you decide to go with just a roller, put your stain in a 5 gallon bucket with a grate. Apply with a roller on a pole and chase drips with a brush. Much faster than a tray.

Pump and pump and pump. You need to pump that thing until you hear air leaking. That’s the safety valve. Then start spraying. And don’t go far until you need to pump, pump, pump more. Also the more liquid you have in the sprayer they more often you will need to pump it up. Again pump your heart out!!!! I use one like that to spray garden, fruit trees, etc.

On the sprayer I believe the "Nays Have It." Melissa's look out yonder said a bunch load in the non verbal way. The roller really is best I think, you can work the stain into the wood as needs be. It looking good with what you have done with it Mike. Have at it!
Oh yes, As you said - A Staining Party with the kids - all with rollers and brushes as needed would work......family time[more of it].

Yes,,, Spray ! It gets the cracks. If you get a lot of Saugus, use the roller after spraying. [Brush and roller 2 1/2 hours,], [ Sprayer, about 8 minutes ]. Use roller if yer a lousey sprayer and dont let off the button at end of spray path when you go back and fourth. One continuous spray sags. Start / Stop spray pattern means no sags.
