Dr. Paul, after I saw your original full post, I researched creatine. What I discovered was it can precipitate heart arrhythmias in some people. I started taking creatine, 5 g per day, about 4 years ago. It hasn’t increased my hair loss, but I did increase the reps in my weight lifting by about 2 to 3 reps per set within 2 weeks of starting. I’ve read a lot of the reports on the supplementation and one report studied men over 60 that took a lot more than 5 g per day (I think they took 20 grams or more per day) and after a few years their creatinine levels were still normal, no significant increase in creatinine.
You should reach out to Novak Djokovic with this. He is an insane tennis player but very stubborn when it comes to avoiding meat. Yet he supplements creatine, which primarily comes from meat.
"Supplemental creatine is *_typically made by synthesizing sarcosine and cyanamide._* As these don't contain any animal-based products, most supplemental creatine is vegan."
Ive been taking 5g a day for several months. really can’t see or tell that anything is going on other than some bloating in my stomach during the first 10 days or so. Just depends on the person. lot of placebo effects for many people.
Never felt great on creatine. Made my hair shed, gained significant water weight, and heart palpitations at times with the last brand i used. That could be down to specific brands, though.
Use pure creatine (monohydrate or HCl) from a reputable US made brand. Also, most ppl don't mention that you should makes sure you're very hydrated while on creatine and don't drink alcohol because creatine (among other things) causes muscle cells to retain more water, i.e., less water actively available in the blood. It's important to be hydrated on creatine. Oh and I wouldn't go over 5 g.
Use creatine monohydrate and drink a lot of water or organic fruit juices while on it. Water weight is also how creatine shows its effects so I wouldn’t worry about it.
I'm so happy there was no supplement review videos in the 1990s. Back then all research was completed by reading reports, books and the requisite muscle mag. UA-cam videos make old and crusty news look shiny and brand new.
It made my hair fall out much faster each time I took it, which was a total 3 times. Each time I stopped my hair loss returned to normal. For this reason I will never attempt to use it again.
Studies show that suplementing substances that our body produces itself , specially powders ultra processed, just make the body stops its endougenous production in 70 a 85%. Thats the same to creatine, wich is produced by a enzyme activated by GH. Gh produced during natural physical exercises are no longer able to activate that enzyme anymore, once your are taking the powder. I am not sure if it is true though, but there are studies....
Even if this is the case, production will return to normal levels after discontinuation However, in order to achieve the necessary dose through meat and training, huge amounts would have to be consumed.
Creatine is the cause of me tearing a ligament in my foot and my knee ligaments felt very loose and elastic when I was taking it. You'll hear many anecdotes of acl tears from creatine. I would highly recommend athletes stay far away.
That sounds really weird Im not aware of any scientific research proving that creatine have any effect on ligaments and joints. But I'm really curious I had acl reconstruction few months ago and thinking about start taking creatine in lower doses like 3g a day but want to find out more about what you saying.
@@simonspacek8288 Scientific studies can miss a lot due to many factors, especially including design and questions asked to participants. Have there been any studies specifically on athletes that run and cut (football, basketball, etc.) looking directly at tendon and ligament strength w & w/out creatine supplementation? Because I have not seen it. All I can tell you is my direct experience and my knowledge of friends and friends of friends who were football players and directly attribute their acl tears to creatine.
Ive always stayed away from creatine. It seems to be overly pushed in the fitness industry, it being claimed as the "most researched supplement", but there still being uncertainty in its link to cancers and hairloss. Those 2/3 lbs of water weight you keep working out is not worth that in my opinion. It is also not a cheap supplement, I think the money is better spent on good spring water and high quality whey protein.
Creatine is not expensive but I experimented with it a half dozen times. No noticeable effects so I stopped wasting my time with it. I eat plenty of meat and I'm not an elite athlete so all the screwing around for a couple of % improvement (which is what all this research claims to show) is just a waste of time.

Technically no problem, but I doubt there are any studies have been done for kids this age. Creatine just gets peed out once your muscles are saturated. I believe some population groups might have issues with kidney issues (Pacific Islanders), but not proven. Where I would say be careful is pre workout supplements. Many (30%+) have been found to contain SARMs (select androgen receptor modifiers)… steroids are blanket androgen modifiers, so very similar effects. Supplements are NOT regulated, and sarms are not illegal. So make sure it’s pure creatine from a reputable brand.

However, instead of taking 100% of the recommended amount (5 grams per day) for some time and then stopping, I believe it is better to take 2 grams daily, complemented by a healthy, natural diet. I like and respect dr. Paul but I feel like once you need to start using supplements, your diet is not optimal. I think his macros are off - too much carbs not enough protein.
While I agree, we are each so very, biologically different. It depends on your physical output. A carnivore in an office can’t be compared to one who’s an athlete, living off grid..
If humans only get optimal creatine by eating a couple pounds of meat, isn't that strong evidence that an optimally healthy diet is based on eating exclusively or almost entirely meat? And if eating fruit and juices or other vegetable foods are displacing intake of important animal-based nutrients, isn't that strong evidence you're eating too many plant foods?

A 5 year study is not long enough for me. I agree that taking creatine as a supplement has benefits, but what about the long-term side effects such as kidney damage and eventually kidney failure? I went out and bought some creatine because I watched this video to try it out again, but it doesn't agree with me. I get these chemical tasting burps, and when I muscle tested it, my body said no, so it went in the bin. Trust your own intuition, and don't listen to anyone but your own body because it knows best.
Creatine is one of the most studied supplements on the market since the 90's. How did you take creatine when you used it? I’ve read a lot of the reports on the supplementation and one report studied men over 60 that took a lot more than 5 g per day (I think they took 20 grams or more per day) and after a few years their creatinine levels were still normal, no significant increase in creatinine.
is hairloss known as a side effect?
You should reach out to Novak Djokovic with this. He is an insane tennis player but very stubborn when it comes to avoiding meat. Yet he supplements creatine, which primarily comes from meat.
"Supplemental creatine is *_typically made by synthesizing sarcosine and cyanamide._* As these don't contain any animal-based products, most supplemental creatine is vegan."
Where does he say he takes creatine?
He also eats fish and eggs i think.

Ive been taking 5g a day for several months. really can’t see or tell that anything is going on other than some bloating in my stomach during the first 10 days or so. Just depends on the person. lot of placebo effects for many people.
What about colostrum?
That’s amazing stuff
Never felt great on creatine. Made my hair shed, gained significant water weight, and heart palpitations at times with the last brand i used. That could be down to specific brands, though.
Try creatine hydrochloride
Use pure creatine (monohydrate or HCl) from a reputable US made brand. Also, most ppl don't mention that you should makes sure you're very hydrated while on creatine and don't drink alcohol because creatine (among other things) causes muscle cells to retain more water, i.e., less water actively available in the blood. It's important to be hydrated on creatine. Oh and I wouldn't go over 5 g.
@@rondoespsych5901 yes hydration is key, monohydrate messes with my sinuses, maybe due to dehydration. I have a better time with hcl personally
Creatine is garbage.
Isn’t the creatine from the animal based diet enough? 250 grams of grass fed beef 50-70 grams of grass fed liver? Milk ? Kefir?
Of course it is. The guy is getting nutty again.
it's not enough. from my experience.

I have hairloss From creatine everytime i take it i think my DHT goes up but iam feeling good From it
It made my hair fall out much faster each time I took it, which was a total 3 times. Each time I stopped my hair loss returned to normal. For this reason I will never attempt to use it again.
Everyone is different do what works for you. All these people on UA-cam “carnivore, vegan, keto, blah blah blah” just do what feels best for you
What's it made of?? I read they make it from cyanimide. Doesn't sound great to me
Studies show that suplementing substances that our body produces itself , specially powders ultra processed, just make the body stops its endougenous production in 70 a 85%. Thats the same to creatine, wich is produced by a enzyme activated by GH. Gh produced during natural physical exercises are no longer able to activate that enzyme anymore, once your are taking the powder. I am not sure if it is true though, but there are studies....
Even if this is the case, production will return to normal levels after discontinuation
However, in order to achieve the necessary dose through meat and training, huge amounts would have to be consumed.
Creatine is the cause of me tearing a ligament in my foot and my knee ligaments felt very loose and elastic when I was taking it. You'll hear many anecdotes of acl tears from creatine. I would highly recommend athletes stay far away.
Ouch! Sounds horrendous. Have you checked out Ben Patrick, Knees over toes guy, for and ideas on getting back into your sport?
It's not cheap? it's really cheap
Whey protein is a shit concoction made in a lap that has no place in the human body. Terrible for your gut.
yeah it's not cheap if you live in Bangladesh with a minimum wage
Creatine is not expensive but I experimented with it a half dozen times. No noticeable effects so I stopped wasting my time with it. I eat plenty of meat and I'm not an elite athlete so all the screwing around for a couple of % improvement (which is what all this research claims to show) is just a waste of time.
Only rétards consume protein powder
I seen you in Danny’s video I was like no way ! Lol
Danny Roddy (Ray Peat promoter)? Awesome! I love Danny’s info!! Jay Feldman, Mike Fave and Strong Sistas are great too!

It's a significant, measurable difference
@@onionslaps It is placebo. I've experimented with creatine around a half dozen times and it didn't do diddly shit. Complete waste of time.
If it's helping you, that just means you need to fix your diet. I'll also add, the published research agrees with me and not what's going on inside your head. The effect sizes are typically around 5%, which no human being could possibly notice, unless they were professional athletes and they had a team monitoring all their performance stats right down to the seconds or grams.
The capacity for human self delusion is basically unlimited.

My 14 year old son wants to take creatine supplements but I wonder if he's too young? Replies are welcome :)
Is he an athlete
Technically no problem, but I doubt there are any studies have been done for kids this age. Creatine just gets peed out once your muscles are saturated.
I believe some population groups might have issues with kidney issues (Pacific Islanders), but not proven.
Where I would say be careful is pre workout supplements. Many (30%+) have been found to contain SARMs (select androgen receptor modifiers)… steroids are blanket androgen modifiers, so very similar effects.
Supplements are NOT regulated, and sarms are not illegal. So make sure it’s pure creatine from a reputable brand.

As I see it, creatine is an essential supplement to take on a daily basis to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
However, instead of taking 100% of the recommended amount (5 grams per day) for some time and then stopping, I believe it is better to take 2 grams daily, complemented by a healthy, natural diet. IMHO
I like and respect dr. Paul but I feel like once you need to start using supplements, your diet is not optimal. I think his macros are off - too much carbs not enough protein.

if you are supplementing then you are eating too much of something and not enough of something else. Its not hard to know which.

Personally I wouldnt reccomend 'loading' creatine, for me its best taking the 3.5g with water daily to avoid any side effects.
Also what type of Creatine did you buy? Theres alot of terrible brands out there, Micronized Creatine is one of the best you can take - I use Optimum Nutrition unflavoured for the last 2 years with only benefits noticed. Muscle size and strength after 5-6 weeks of daily intake is atleast 15-20% more.
You replaced nutrient dense meat for nutrient poor fruit, of cause you'll see benefits from supplimentation, but why not just eat less carbs and more meat so you can get all the mitochondrial benefits and avoid cancer?
It’s wild that a pound and a half isn’t enough meat to be optimal creatine-wise
