Possibly my favorite song ever recorded spanning all genres. Phenomenal playing, and as a drummer this is like sweet candy to the ears. That snare is tuned perfectly.
Yo! Could not agree more! I play drums as well and have been a big fan of these guys for awhile. Next month im going to finally get to see them live with Animals As Leaders!
@@TacoCrismaIt was sick! I got to meet Animals As Leaders. I also got to meet all the guys in the band that played before The Contortionist. The band that opened for them was Moon Tooth. The two parts in the drumming that always blow my mind wide open even compared to all the other sections is the snare converging during the first 9/8 section. And especially the 4/4 over 9/8 imposed polymeter in the last drift with me section. It's such a cool trick and the complete loop of 4/4 is done in such a way that AFTER the quarter note pause completes 7 bars of 4/4. Gives crazy momentum and a sense of hemiola/tempo increase into the "real" 4/4 ebb and flow section
I saw them by accident and people were going into another dimension when this song was playing and I remember looking around wondering what was happening. Something was being experienced, this was no longer just a concert. I'll never forget it.

"Ebb and flow, sink in".
Just pure inspired compositional brilliance. Plain and simple. Deeply moving, paced perfectly, evolving, rooted in groove while tickling polyrhythmic sensors and displaying gorgeous chord voicings throughout. The snyth playing can too easily get overshadowed but is integral
I don't know which part I enjoy more, "balance finds its place, reaching for the Mother Sun. Rooted to intuition. You are the language." Or "balance seeks it's place. Moving backwards towards centre Sun. Rooted in intuition. We are the language."
The evolution of sound in this band is incredible, I love when band go far beyond and explore the limits, and of course the lyrics and the instrumental parts are well placed together 🙏I don't remember when I discover this band but Languaje was the first song I listened of these guys 😎
Can any drummer explain to me what is happening at 8:38 when the ebb and flow riff returns? Of course it's in 9/8 using the snare pattern and structure from the 9/8 section in Language I but is it also implying a 4/4 polyrhythm with the ride simultaneously? That part is so mind bending!
Alright, I charted it out and I gotta say Contortionist are genius for this one. Not only saving this polyrhythm until the end for theming purposes and making 9/8 sound incredibly groovy but the execution is flawless where the polyrhythm in 4/4 is completed right on the downbeat to give momentum into the next part. Love this band, this is one of those wonderful parts where it's awesome at a surface level and downright masterful upon analysis.
@@rockbandftmfw9 one of my favorite prog sections ever honestly. It's so natural feeling that I didn't put together how complex it actually was until maybe my 5th listen? That's the tell of great prog songwriting in my mind, it hides in plain sight with depth following upon inspection.
@@coveryourears3851 Yeah hahaha Im a drummer first so im always watching them I couldnt get the time signature either but I knew the 4/4 was there. Another rhythm I enjoy which may not be as complex as this one is the chorus to Prayer Position by Periphery. They just hammer on that one note and it like bleeds into the next section of the melody so perfectly
@@coveryourears3851 It's not exactly a polyryhtm, more like a polymeter, when you lay an odd phrase on top of a 4/4 beat and some added measures for it to encounter the downbeat, giving that "back and forth" sensation.
