  • Rusting of metals over time is a major problem. There are various ways to remove this rust, the most important of which is sandblasting with a sandblaster. However, a sandblaster can be expensive and take up a lot of space. Also, sometimes small metals are not cleaned with a sandblaster. You can watch how to remove rust without a sandblasting machine in the method in this video.

Given that the most expensive component in this set up is the battery and the cheapest are the nails I would recommend buying new nails and saving the battery's life for better projects.

Actually it does have a role. I restore vintage vehicles. Sometimes rare nuts and bolts of specific sizes may come in British Standard Whitworth sizes. That’s when abrading small quantities is useful. Having said that, I own a glass beads blasting cabinet

I'd dangle the drill & jar combo over the edge of your bench, so jar is upright. Clamp or weight & support drill so it stays put, and use a spring clamp on the trigger for easy on and off. Great idea. Cheap and easy.

    • @jdrissel

Not just different exposures, different color temperatures too. I think the basic idea could work but it would take a lot longer than 2 hours and it would be a hell of a wear on a drill. Honestly I'd expect that the lid of the jar would fail from metal fatigue before the rust was gone. But using a rotary tumbler does work, if slowly.

Sir, I would like to beg you, on behalf of the battery pack, to please mount the drill into the vise using the grip part of the drill and NOT the battery pack. If the battery pack gets damaged it can not only be costly, but you can end up with a fire situation that is nearly unstoppable until the lithium is fully consumed by a very hot, very sparky, and very nasty dribbles below it, and very nasty fumes and gases which are not only unpleasant, but also not conducive to human life. For this purpose, I would employ a cheap corded drill. Also sir, if you would read the manual again, I bet you would find some small print that states that running your nice Stanley cordless drill at lower than full speed for an extended period of time will damage it. Specifically the switch and speed control circuit. The lower speeds are only for starting drilling and starting the insertion of a fastener, but never for very long at the slower speeds. Yes, I'm one of those geeks/nerds who reads every word of my instruction manuals. It saves me money in the long run from not having to fix or replace my tools. I make my money repairing things, much of the time because they never read the manual. Oh, I would bet good money that the Stanley drill is actually a Dewalt with the Stanley name on it. After all, Black and Decker, Dewalt, and Stanley are all under the same corporate roof, the same company. That is, unless it is counterfeit, but even then, even the real ones are made in China too, so go figure.

I’de just use either battery acid or Muriatic Acid “ hydrochloric” used fir swimming pools. Leave uncovered and away from all sparks as it will give off hydrogen gas. Then thoroughly flush with a mixture of water and baking soda. Probably less than 30 min and better results. However dealing with dangerous acid, take all necessary actions to protect eyes, skin, clothing and don’t breath fumes which are irritating and explosive and give off heat. I would suggest outside in heavy steel container or glass jar, maybe even put in ice water bath so the heat doesn’t cause it to ignite and blow up in your face if you are near it when bubbling.
