- Ravikiran Siddi learned to run as a young boy on hunting trips with his father in the remote Indian forests of Uttara Kannada.
Now he dreams of representing his community internationally on the track.
Descended from the African Bantu tribe, Siddi people have lived in India for centuries but have long been discriminated against as outsiders. Now, a sporting initiative is helping tribal communities achieve athletic success and with it, recognition and acceptance.
101 East meets the young athletes racing for a better future.

Love it.... this is the India we want to see succeed! May they multiply in thousands. This story of the marginal communities and finding/nurturing sporting talent is very inspiring.
Glad you liked it, dear Vivek.
I LOVED this. As an Afro-Caribbean person from The Bahamas this was great to see! Keep up the excellent work; these children and future professional athletes and leaders are sure to excel with consistency, opportunity, and guidance. This is how it's done 👑
May god bless this kids and they become ray of hope for all under privileged. This documentary literally made me cry.
They should invest seriously in these talented kids..they would put india in an international level. They need a real track to practice.
This kind of reporting helps unknown talent. Thank you guys loved it.
Surprised to see African communities are also living in Indian for a long time.
Both India and Pakistan have a sizeable Siddi community

They're tribal communities. Don't know about African but then there's a lot of australoid genes among the tribals in south
Wow! Finally it's not a propoganda post.😃
Al jazeera shows the truth unlike godi media
Why? Bcz its not exposing lundu's attrocities?
@@daddy9132 what they do with other religion in their islamic countries they are hypocrite. Chuslam🖕
Finally some positive news regarding India.
@@unboxingera1300 india and moody arent same but andbhakt takr the criticism of moody as the criticism of india thats why they are called andbhakt
The reality of this is that India, is STILL a country with major issues as far as class, religion, race and ethnicity is concerned. They sought out individuals from disadvantaged communities and African blood because they acknowledge the fact that on an international level athletes who are disadvantaged and also have African blood tend to excel is sports.
India is brimming with confidence in all endeavours and it's showing , India's performance in Tokyo was it's best ever). Everyone is so proud to represent their country, even those who belong to minority communities.
Well done to the athletes and to the organisations for their outreach.
Apart all....lets appreciate the diversity and beauty INDIA has!
This is amazing! I had the opportunity to volunteer with and spend some time with Ravi, Nayana, Sonu and the other athletes at BoS a few years ago and its great to see how far they've come since then!
Did she get to travel to the US and what’s new about these folks? I will like to know. Thanks
@itsmyturn360 Yes, she will be representing India in upcoming Asian Games in China.
She already won team bronze medal in 4×100 relay early this year in Asian Atheletics Championship
Thanks Al Jazeera ❤️
All the best to Ravi and Naina
May God bless you guys
Excel and make our India proud
Great initiative and happy to see that organization's such as BOS , nurturing talent in the remote parts of.India and helping children see a better future. Way to go. Kudos!!
They are not India's tribal athletes,
They are Indian Athletes.
I’m absolutely certain I’ll see these 2 on the big screen in the future.
Here in India, we just need to give other sports a chance, cricket is treated like a God, and rest just as time pass, the time has come to change and give them a chance. All the best!!!
cricket is for losers

I wish more and more people show interest in grooming and encouraging such budding talent and hope this will lead to more support for such stars-they are the real stars versus the television stars. This was so inspiring!
I couldn't have been more proud than I am today to see on of my buddy doing so great and it would be an honor to say that I've had so many opportunities that I've raced against him and also with him.
One love for you buddy stay focused and there's nothing stopping you from achieving what you've dreamt of ❤️
And also great work by Al-Jazeera covering his life and his hardwork even i didn't knew anything about him properly.
Many thanks for your comment, dear Kshitij. Glad you enjoyed it.
India Is so diverse , yet there is lack of opportunity , but definitely slowly and gradually we will excel .
the opportunity was given by citizens not govt
and represented by foreign media
One thing no one noticed is, 3 Indian languages are spoken in this vedio. Marathi, Kannada and Hindi.
I live in northern Karnataka, near junction of 3 states. Technically we speak 3 languages mixed with grammar of any one language of which Kannada and telugu being 99% same, and also urdu bcz of nizam rule
If consider urdu and Hindi as separate, I can speak 6 languages,
Kannada(primary)
Telugu
Marathi
Hindi
English
Urdu
I noticed it. BTW I can speak - Hindi, Urdu, Hindustani, Rekhta, Hyderabadi, Dehlvi, Khariboli, Malayalam and understand Marathi and Russian. Almost forgot, English is primary.
Nicely documented AL Jazeera. All the best for the participants ✌️👍

It's good to see how Bridge Of Sports foundation is working hard to get those atheletes in international sport, A big salute to them and I will like to join them in future
This was such a great documentary of the undeserving in the most obscure reaches of a complex country.
Dear Jason, glad you liked it.
At last one interesting documentary apart from your religious fanatic point of view good 👍 for your efforts ww expect this type of news no propaganda here
Don’t (try to) be like Usain Bolt. (Try to) be yourself.
Don't just be yourself that's easy, be your best self.
Go beyond bolt. Being yourself isn’t always helpful.
Ever heard of the word role model?
Trying to be like Bolt is a lot of pressure, he is literally the GOAT of sprinting. They should just take it a day at a time to their path to greatness
Ravi u r human 1st.n we r very proud 👏 of u.never gave up hope n keep fighting 💙.
Great inspiring video. It applies to ALL ethnic groups.Be yourself and be your best
this is the indian story we want to see
Good job Al Jazeera. Do more documentaries like this

Great topic, great journalism, great editing. Over all just a really wonderful quality documentary. Thank you for creating these, we love it.
This story is very humbling. Being aware of the discrimination against the poor, makes us realise how much we take for granted. Thanks to those who make a positive difference in the lives of these young people. I pray success and goodwill over them🙏🏽
May God Bless You guys keep it uu
Proud of such great initiatives. Siddis are genuine possibilities. Proud of them
Best wishes for them to go further in life.
i wish them all the best in the future
Proud to say she is our village 🥳👍
A good deviation from regular vile anti-India propaganda. I wish we can a get documentary on Slavery and poor work conditions in Qatar.
My best wishes to these young athletes. Hope they do well
And make India Proud
The coach seems like from Tibetian community settlement in karnataka, very technical with a good contribution .
Best of luck to everyone. You don't need fancy equipment to train as an athlete my cousin was proof of this because he won the Heisman and he never had any special equipment
Great initiative, may they do well in sports and go on to achieve great things for themselves and the country 👍
So interesting, thanks for this piece 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it!
Inspiring documentry . Love it
This is GOOD India & their public image.
Why don't you people show about Muslim countries and their atrocities against their own people ( minorities e g Hindu, sikh, jain, Christian)
You can post this comment on another aljazeera news video
Amazing want more content like this
wow! thanks for this. I just feel that I've got a purpose in life now!!!
Love these Tribal people I'm a Mallu in Bangalore. They are still Indians and they deserve this if they are ready .
Proud being an Indian🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
First Brilliant Thing seen on UA-cam ❤❤❤Real
Weird question people ask ...😂 let's call is curiosity..but some is stupidity..more blessings to this coach for giving these kids a chance...bless up
I wish I had 100 billion dollars. I would fund these programs all over the world
Thanks Al Jazeera. Good luck to the athletes!
Many thanks for your comment!
Well, he’s talented and gorgeous! Good luck to you, Ravi!
Awesome job to the Alz. Team. Kudos !
People from tribal communities are naturally well built and ability to endure hardships are phenomenol due to their living style...and upbringing ....if these people are diverted to sports and under proper guidance and facilities they will do much better
Need to promote in football also india I - league , india super league , Duran Cup , india national team football 👍👍👍
The Siddis are very recent arrivals in India. Other Indian indigenous groups have been here since probably more than 10-15 thousands years before.. which is quite before the other Indians such as North Indians started forming or inhabiting the North region of the country.
A very complex, 'anthropological subject' matter to reason with!!
The Indigenous 'Andaman Islanders' definitely makes one query - your conclusion.🤔
And your point is?
May God fulfill all their dreams!
Kudos to "101 east" team for this mesmerizing documentary....
Keep them coming✌️
Many thanks for your positive feedback, dear Meesam.
Hii mam i am an athlete from lakshadweep we don't have any faslitis here please help us
Robbie using the wrong thing to run with it is not heavy enough. He needs iron so find some old iron equipment and run with. Tyres is what we give the kids in Jamaica adults need heavier things. Hope to see him at the championships in July.
The term " Tribal Athletes" is very demeaning and insulting.
They are Indians.
What is wrong with being tribal? There are a lot of indigenous tribes in various parts of India, that is not in touch with the mainstream society.
This group of young indian athletes should contact marathoner eliud kipchoge for some advice & tips on Training. They will benefit immensely.
Splendid work by Bridges of Sports. Our children our worth every drop of sweat and every rupee that the coaches are putting in. We at Project Nanhi Kali are working with 180,000 girls in rural India to bring sports into their lives. They are welcoming the opportunities with great enthusiasm.
Great documentary
Power to you my Brother
great to see such a positive documentary
Great Work @AlJazeera 👏🏽 the Indian media would never cover stories based on tribal communities.
Would be great if there was a link, to donate to their cause
You are definitely from Kenya brother, more grace to you there
These young talented boys and girls should be given quality turfs to practice together with modern accessories such as high speed video equipment and time keepers that are accurate to microseconds. Also it is extremely gruelling for the young minds to stay focused . I'm so glad to see that these points are being addressed in India which your documentary covered it very well. Absolutely beautiful !!
This is not a new thing! Have you heard of PT Usha. Nambiar Sir saw something in Usha and we all know she know her dream was to get an Olympic medal from India. She fought to have athletic facilities in kerala and there was a time when there were a lot of Malayali stars in athletics.
I like this episode so much. Empowering the less fortunate. 👍
Bro you can do it. You need proper training and diet . You gonna qualify soon. I am praying for you
Great to see 🇮🇳 Jai Hind
What a beautiful documentary.
Wow what a work by this news channel , Indian ministry of sports must look. To this video

Good job I hope for the Cominity a Better Successful Athlete for International levels to Come in future
The Siddi community are also residing in jungle of Gir, Gujarat.
I can't believe he lost to those guys, I felt it was a concluded race and that he'd make it.
May they run so fast that no one can touch em
Well done kids. I will still followup with your progress. A genuine gift to the underprivileged that the Indian government has embarked on and is a good lesson for other governments to note.
Jay sri ram ,jai hanuman 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Great job AJ team. You have gone great lengths to bring these hidden talents an international exposure. Most people in the country probably doesn't even know about these people and their struggles.
Many thanks for your comment, glad you enjoyed it.
inspiring to see the hidden talents and their motivation...great documentary and a way to go model..all sides (private, public and government) come together to scale this up and reach the entire country. Thanks for making this.
I love nainas family so nice 🥰😍
They should make a documentary on phoneticism ... 🙏🇮🇳

Great work ❤
His mom talk like my mom.mother's are always like that.
My advice to India as a nation is to move away from discriminative practices based on religion, class or caste system and racial biasness/injustice and provide all its citizens with equal opportunity because when one child, tribe, religion, caste, race or community is left behind, it is a scar for the whole nation of India.
You have a potential to become the next Chinese on the block but it can only happen when you uplift everyone. Thanks for supporting the Cidis community and the underprivileged of your citizens.
Change start with an individual but for a complete social and cultural transformation to take place, it has to start from the top in form of government policy.
Above all, lets recognize that all men are created equal.
UCC
Make india proud brother 🇹🇹🙏🏽
Satute to the coaches and government should provide more facilities to them and should give them national recognition in the constitution
Beautiful people,
Jai hind 🇮🇳❤️
