Removing & Remaking our Skoolie Front Door with Biometric Lock
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 сер 2019
- First we had to figure out how to take the door off our bus, then we had to figure out how to disassemble it and rebuild it into a whole new door, while re-using the original glass and metal. In other words, we didn't even really know what we would have to do to make this work! This video reveals some of the behind-the-scenes process of figuring it out as you go along... which has been practically every step of this entire bus-build. Not to mention that the door opening wasn't even square, so we had to get creative and shim the top hinge by welding layers of 1/8th-inch steel to hang the door straight! The best part, of course, was installing our geeked-out biometric door lock and getting to see it work! The lock has quadruple redundancy with multiple fingerprints, number codes, and key, plus a 9v battery emergency power terminal if the main batteries die. Be sure to come back for the exciting sequel when we'll fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants again, as we attempt to cut and re-install the glass, frame in the door, and more!

About Us:
Hi! We are Mike & Kerry, the proud owners of a 1992 Bluebird rear engine (pusher), 40' school bus! We named her Bussy McBusface in honor of the RRS Boaty McBoatface travesty!
We're building a Tiny-Home-in-a-Bus for full-time living in the most adventure-friendly way possible! In other words, Bussy will not be parked in our driveway, waiting for weekend or holiday getaways... when we finish the build, we'll be packing everything we're keeping into the bus and driving away from this old house forever!
We plan to be boondocking the majority of the time, so you'll see that reflected in our choices throughout the build (100 gallon water tank, composting toilet, solar power system, etc). We'd love to have you stick around and follow us on our journey, throughout the Skoolie Build, and to Infinite Adventures Beyond!
Mike & Kerry
Nicely done!
Very Impressive Mike!!
Nice work
Good job.....Safety is necessary....
Great personalities!
We want to get a bus- but I’m dreading the long-ass demo & build out!!!
Wow..... How awesome is that......?
A very talented man 🙂👍
Good job dude.
WOW, nice.
You were bumping and grinding. LOL
nice job
Pantera! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Very cool you two. You guys ROCK!!
Love you Dad!
IMPRESSIVE
Fantastic
Wow! Very cool door mod. Best idea yet!! You're hired! is what they'll say if they can afford you guys.
Thank you you gave me alot of good ideas!! I want to keep the door but didn't know how!! 😄👏👏
the door was cool
Laminated glass is easy to cut. Cut both sides then work it up and down slightly to get a small gap. Squirt alcohol into the gap and set fire to it. Plastic melts and bam, yet done.
Mike is da man! Kerry is da woman! Together they are awesome!
Another Mikegineering triumph! You're making me consider reusing my folding door when I move the door behind the steer tires on our bus. I have plenty of time to think about it. With luck our total mechanical restoration of the powertrain will be done in a few weeks and we can start the conversion in earnest and steal lots of your Mikegineered gems.
Nice when a plan comes together. You might want to think about tinting that glass before reinstalling. Good job folks 👍☮️!
I am SO HAPPY TO find this build! Trying to think of a lock for our door too. Which was welded together, and I LOVE the finish look in part 2 of this door! Hoping to attempt and create a match for the door behind the driver as we roof raised 28"
This guy can do frigging everything!
Great job! Kerry you are sooo entertaining...Mike you are a genius. I love you two together.
Well done!!!
Mike that door is AWESOME! 😲
Awesome fabrication work!
Hi Mike, Hi Kerry, I have to agree with all the other people here, that is a brilliant door Mike and a great entry system. I will look forward to seeing the next video and the finished door. I hope you both have had a good week and both of you are feeling good. I dont suppose these comments are supposed to be to personal but I love seeing you both work together and you look great Kerry.. Take care both of you and see you soon, love to you both...
Superb job as always!
Really appreciate your fabrication skill!
Definite craftsman! Great job!
Nice job on the door good thinking
Great job love your bus build
Thank you!😁
Awesome! Good choice for music too...
The best schoolie door i’ve ever seen.
But not very secure!
Some of your best work.
Excellent piece of work. Thank you for making this video. - C
😎👍🍻
luv the music, luv the door, luv the fab work, amazing job guys!!!
I love it! I love your skoolie. You guys are the BEST! I AM READY to buy my bus. Well after I sell my condo.
You are AWESOME Man !!!
Great Job, thanks for sharing. 👍
I love you kept the door! A lot of school bus conversions take the door out, I'd never be able to do what you guys have with the door but gosh it looks good!
something satisfying about watching skill being deployed on such a grand project...awesome
😲😲😀😀👍
I love watching your videos have not missed one!!!
really great job on the door one of the best ive seen
Thank you. Man!😊
Very nice 👍
That is f***ing hilarious! I love it so much! ❤️😂❤️
You are amazing. Great job.
Damn Mike that is freakin genius brother. I can not wait to see next video for finished project. Absolutely awesome.
I love the female "what if you totally screw it up and then it's a disaster" input! LOL!!!🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Tim Ferriss is a fan of this. If you're stressing about something imagine the worst case scenario. If you did everything wrong is it recoverable? This tactic helps relieve anxiety that doesn't help move you forward.
I do that alot. Plan A, B, C, ...., & F
I love the bus the door joke lol!
I am sure you will appreciate that door every time you go through it in the future. I am sure it will look awesome completed.
Omg your skills are amazing and I thought when I made a cedar strip canoe from scratch I thought that was an amazing project! My wife and I are just retired and full time living in a Tiffin class a motorhome sure hope our paths cross someday! Love your channel can’t wait to see your finished entry door!
Nice job .. The best tool for this episode was the adjustable hammer wrench
Nice fabrication on that door and lock, I like the bio-scan feature (though dirty,wet/shriveled fingerprints don't work) so no locking yourself out of your bus.
I am so not looking forward to figuring out my bus' door, mine don't fold in like those but swing outward separately
Watching you two work together and joke with each other makes me wish I had a partner in crime on my bus Changing Stars.
Thanks for sharing
Mike form Texas,Take Memories,Leave Footprints
We learn that very quickly after I got some super glue on my fingers!😁
@@BussyMcBusface Might want to code in more than a single finger to gain access.
I've always hated when people put standard steele house doors on a skoolie (and suspect their not as secure as they think they are), as they look soooo stoop! Mike's solution is elegant, thrifty and seemingly way more secure. That Mikaver, his background in engineering sure showcased with this project! 👌👌👌
Pretty cool guys I like that you were able to keep the glass very nice work Mike can't wait for part two hopefully you don't break the glass putting it back into the door.
outstanding job your a genious really thought you were keeping the folding door style, I was like noooo that's not safe, but you knocked it out the park.
My favorite bus team took the traditional junk skoolie door to a new level! Then multiplied by 400, and added more cowbell. Literally the first skoolie door I've had any love for.
That glass is probably as good as you think. My friend since childhood has a glass shop and let me play with a glass gas station door. I smashed it easily, but to get through it I ended up chopping the soft/sharp/flexible/smashed mess out with a hatchet, took several minutes of maniacal blade-ruining Hulk Smashing.
So, recently my brother up-armored the beautiful but not secure front door of his new home for wife and two little kids. Replaced the boatload of glass with glass like you have, then added "security film" (think window tint, but clear). Security filmed it inside and out, because he's my brother. Added a nice lock like yours, plus wicked bombproof hardware. Now you'd do better to go through the wall :)
Thank you! We are pretty happy with the results so far. You're lucky to have a brother that could do that stuff. I'm having to learn on the Fly! Lol!😁
Wondering if you could do some stain glass on the doors. You could fake stain glass paint them.
Actually I thought about it briefly but we decided to keep the regular glass for the safety aspect of being able to see out of them.
@@BussyMcBusface you can paint the glass with special paint and make it look like a stain glass window. If you change your mind on design easy to clean off.
Leave a space you can see out. Maybe just do a tiny design lol
"Is this the moment of truth?" ..... "one of them" hahahah!! Such an awesome job, this is the door of all doors! It still blows us away that all in a days work for you is an agonizing month-long trek for us lol! Great video and can't wait to see part 2!
It was a very tough fab as a whole but each step was manageable. Not fi NJ issued yet but I think it will turn out amazing. At least I hope!😁
i use to live in work in benson az
I love it when he geeks out on the projects- even when he’s so done w/ the bus build! 💜
It’s so. Oool that you film your dad doing all the work
🤣🤣🤣
Amazing job! My squeaky folding door drives me crazy.
LMAO...”grown up LEGOs”!!
Elegant solution Mike. Are you planning on fitting an overhead door closer?
Absolutely
Do you think you could add a hinge lock with a bolt for extra security? I don't have a skoolie yet, but I'm planning out everything for the future!
You came ,You saw ,You KICKED IT'S ASS ...Great job .. :-)
Wow!! Can I send you my bus door so that you can fit a biometric lock? That was awesome work. Best wishes from an Australian paramedic.
Great Job !!!
That door design is better than any others I have seen.... I am gonna steal your idea.
BTW, if I wanted to send you something.... do you have a PO Box or mailing address ???
Dm me on facebook or instagram.😊
Dat wuz weally kewl! Do you think it will wattle when you wonder down da wode?
Just put a latch bar in the center when it turns it locks the top and bottom
I like mine better. 😊
Bussy McBusface 👍
Amazing Mike and Kerry! I wonder sometimes what just does go on inside your mind. A bad guy will have a very hard time getting thru that door. Keep the videos coming.
Thank you Jerry, that means a lot to me. As for what goes on in my mind, it's a never-ending creation cycle that I can't turn off usually. LOL!
I put a regular swinging door on a friend of mines.
There are so many options. Kerry and I discussed this but in the end, Kerry and i wanted to keep the school bus feeling.
@@BussyMcBusface He want to make more secured . Thought some could just break the glass. Looks good tnough the way you did it.
That laminated glass is no joke. I mean if somebody wanted to get into the bus, they will get in any number of ways.
Just found your channel. Great video and a helluva job on that door you two! Great fabrication skills. Let me mention another security tip for ya. Weld a 5 or 6 inch piece over the latch area. Overlap the seam from the door where it latches when you close the door. Otherwise the latch can be jimmied easily to open the door. If it's covered by steel, it can't be accessed easily.
Just sayin! Can't wait to see more...good luck!!
Part II will have this😁
How do you like your biometric lock? Is it still working for you 3 years later?
I'm really amazed how skilled your husband is
I finally found someone who mange to remake the Door to a totally Badass Door it also looks beautiful
How you decided on the out look colours
And the slide Doors inside
Thank you! We havent actually decided quite yet. We bounce around from lime green to real ro maroon... just dont know.😁
@@BussyMcBusface
That would be awesome 👍
I love the door! My Skoolie has the 2 separate doors that come together, do you think can this be done with mine?
Hmmmm... Most likely yes.
Hell Yeah
My wife and i have an 96 Bluebird AARE 40' as well. Ours is called EP (Endless Possibilities)
Saw this video and would like to know if you could share yours materials list for the upgraded door.
I want to do something the same to make the bus more secure for my wife when im working as we just found our shes pregnant with twins and we fulltime in ours. .
Any info would be much appreciated.
Love what your doing to the bus and all the creative changes done.
Rob
Holly crap... I have watched a few of the newer videos and I thought you used a house door, not customize the bus door lol
I looked for this. Security... Only one that did a good thing.
Should you put a steel beam for the catch plate of the door? Prying would be easy since it's wood and light sheet metal.
On our bus there is no wood involved with the door and it's all thick steel everywhere.
What was once a folding noisy nuisance, is now a biometric fortress barricade. Now all you need is a surrounding moat with henchmen on horseback.
😂🤣😂🤣
Seriously though, nice work and inspiring as usual!!! Might have to borrow the solid one piece door idea.
HELL YEAH!!!!!😁🏰🚣♂️🔥
I think I would have just welded a ring on that hinged area and run a bar through it to keep it from opening, then used a big padlock
I really am doing this for the simple purpose of weather sealing the door to keep n.v us warm/cool. Also I just had to have that cool lock!😁
@@BussyMcBusface I think it is more aesthetically pleasing to look at as well. It's your home, you don't want a deadbolt for your front door.
Do ya'll sell the full video of the actual build? Step by step, cut by cut? I'd love to buy that.
I'm afraid we didnt film that much footage. I'm sorry.
Problem Identifier - Problem Solver. His name is Mike.
I just realized I would suck making instructional videos because I can't find enough to say when explaining how I want to do something or how I do it. I just look at it, do it in my head, maybe write it down, then do it.
This entire video, if I made it, would probably only be about two minutes long lol.
Jesus i wish my glass came out that way..
Mike no plasma cutter yet?
Havent been able to justify it yet...
I wish my girlfriend would talk to me like that, bust it baby. Ya
Ww
Your wood working skills are second to none. Every thing fits tight. But please let someone else do your 120 volt electrical. No box connects on the in coming 50 amp feed. That’s not good. That white plastic on the two breakers is a terrible idea. Not able to trip if there is a overloading on the circuit. But I love watching you build. Great job.
We have 2 20 amp mains before the main box.
great work, but I think I will stick with wood LOL
It isn't finished yet!😁
Put a Rv door
Just installed a door...
Remove the bus door and then frame in an RV Door...Piece of Cake...Don't make it harder than it has to be!!!
No thanks. This is way better and stronger than a cheaply made rv door.
@@BussyMcBusface oooh yesss. It is soooo coooleeeer also. YOU MADE IT. Not something than THE WHOLE WORLD has.
It's not nothing he can't build!
What happens if the electronics go out in the door lock?
It has a key that will open the door sans electronics.
@@BussyMcBusface - Ohh good to know, thanks.
He said you can open it 3 ways.
@@zianeshkasparen4358 - Yes, he already answered me.
