Skoolie Drain Pipes & Gray/Black Water System
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 вер 2024
- In this video you'll see each step of building and installing a maze of drain pipes under the skoolie as Mike creates our customized waste water removal system! You'll see how we use a 2-way Control Valve and a Double Waste Valve Assembly, which give us the option of allowing our shower and washing machine water to be diverted to trees or plants, or switch to go into the gray/black water tank when necessary. This will extend the length of our boondocking ability by preventing our waste water tanks from filling too soon.
A note about why we have TWO waste water tanks: in our original plans, we thought we'd have a flushing toilet, so we installed two 33 gallon tanks under the bus, one for a black water tank and the other for a gray water tank. After we decided to use a composting toilet, we chose to simply connect the two tanks together for 66 gallons of gray and/or black water capacity. Since then we have learned that kitchen sink water is generally considered black water, so that goes straight into our tanks. Later on, we will also be plumbing a line for urine only from our composting toilet straight into the tanks, so that is black water as well. But if/when we need to keep all waste water contained, then our gray water from shower and washing machine can go into those two tanks as well, so we are calling them "gray/black water" tanks in our case!
(Also, in a future video, we will be installing a digital liquid level sensor system as well!)

About Us:
Hi! We are Mike & Kerry, the proud owners of a 1992 Bluebird rear engine (pusher), 40' school bus! We named her Bussy McBusface in honor of the RRS Boaty McBoatface travesty!
We're building a Tiny-Home-in-a-Bus for full-time living in the most adventure-friendly way possible! In other words, Bussy will not be parked in our driveway, waiting for weekend or holiday getaways... when we finish the build, we'll be packing everything we're keeping into the bus and driving away from this old house forever!
We plan to be boondocking the majority of the time, so you'll see that reflected in our choices throughout the build (100 gallon water tank, composting toilet, solar power system, etc). We'd love to have you stick around and follow us on our journey, throughout the Skoolie Build, and to Infinite Adventures Beyond!
Mike & Kerry
Great video
I just bought a skoolie!
That's awesome!!!❤️
the fix-it for the oversize hole was Brilliant.......y'all are making my day so much better !!!!
Great video, there are not many gray/black video’s out there. Thanks for the ideas
you guys are awesome. Love the way you react to the trials and tribulations of bus conversions!
Love the plumbing work, great job... mistakes happen often to all of us...yours seemed easily rectifiable, great job... I am at the early stages of my build... but striving to push on...
How are you doing with your build
@@r8edrv4fun65 ran into some physical limitations
Congratulations! Masterfully done!!! Respect!
I have the option for “both”. Mine was converted in the 1960’s, they thought of everything.
There are many great bus build videos that I truly enjoy but yours is the only one that has music that doesn't depress me. So thank you for that😁
That is a nice job. Way to go! You two are awesome 😎
Uniseal is the best way to pipe into a ABS tank. Nice fix on that hole you drilled too big. Mistakes are made but the key is figuring out how to make it look that there was none. Your videos are very good. Thanks
Nicely done once again! Mike is apparently great at laying pipe. LoL.
You guys have some the best most intricate informative videos I've seen!! Gives us the confidence to tackle the projects on our skoolie!
Mike, wrap a piece of neoprene round those pipes where you are using the metal conduit tape. Believe me when i say that stuff is sharp and will vibrate cut it's self into the plastic. I also put a nut and bolt through it close to what i am supporting, that stops it moving in the vertical plane as well. Nice neat install :)
Going to do this. Thank you.
Love the options! I was thinking of some kind of hose exit for my future build. Dig it! 👍
Yay, you guys are so close to being finished. I'm so happy for you.
I can absolutely tell, John was a hampster habitat master LOL..... Keep up the good work buddy.
I know you mean Mike, right? He would be the hamster King! 😂
I did mean Mike, wow, I must have been thinking of my friend John the mechanic subconsciously. He's been have a rough patch lately and I had been texting him earlier. Sorry about that.
I watch U guys solely for the humor and learning from Ur mistakes 🤣 i hope U don’t think im an awful person😞 im havin so much fun ☮️❤️🤗
I like all your videos but am curious as to how you are doing with regard to the actual gvwr on the bus. It seems like you are adding a lot of weight but I am not sure how it is with the gvwr. Just a curious question thanks and keep the video coming cAnt wait to see the final bus conversion
Very informative video, thank you so much!
I would have to draw myself a whole diagram like 3 times to work out mistakes before I touch a pipe. Just did my gutted cottage. Came out nice! Wish I had the 3 way thingy...may add that and also use it in my box truck.
Hi Mike, Hi Kerry, how you both doing?, Mike that was a great fix when the hole was to big in the tank, never ceases to amaze me how quck you come up with a solution. I may not be building a bus conversion but if I was then I wouldnt go far wrong by watching you two.. Anyway hope you both had a great weekend, good to see you both, love to you both, take care..
Kevin, you always say the nicest things to us. I jokingly refer to you as Kerry's British boyfriend!😁 When the comments start coming in Kerry always asks if you have commented yet. Thank you for your kind words and constant support. Love to you as well.♥️
@@BussyMcBusface
I say the nice things to the nice people and seeing as I dont comment anywhere else you two must be the nicest people and you are. I like how you jokingly refer to me to Kerry, how honoured am I, lol.. I will always support you. Look forward to seeing you both again.. Love yer..
Great video thanks get ready to start a shuttle bus you have been an inspiration you have suck great helper
We are going to sell it.
Loved this. I have a 26 gal grey tank to install and I learned a ton of info here. Thank You! Tank Mode/Tree Mode lol Now we need a Pee Mode. LOL I Heard a rooster in background. Oh and at 19:27 the cap on your glue was crooked...hope it didn't dry up. LOL Fair Winds and Smiles!!
ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO .. My favorite build channel . I've learned a lot from you 2 .. just FANTASTIC :-)
Thank you for your kind words. You always have something nice to say and we appreciate that! Thank you again!
That patch looks like it will make the connection stronger, more dependable. Happy little accident ?
Fantastic job. It’s great how you look at the problem and fix it on the spot. Did you control your emotions or cut it out of the video? I’d have been cursing and crying at the same time. LOL 😄
I really just started figuring it out.
I love the way you guys problem solve together! You have such a wonderful relationship!
Yay! 😎 Looking Good!! 🍻
So..... what are the plans for the old ambulance next to the bus? Just curious.
Excellent job Mike........... Since you will be a moving house down the road, I would consider installing another pipe around your draining black pipe where your straps supports are hanging. Cut some waste water pipe about 2-3" wide and cut them in quarters, then glue them on the outside of your drain pipe where your straps supports are going. I would make a complete wrap around the pipe with the strap before they are secured to the bus frame. Then take a bolt and nut and tighten the strap to make sure the strap does not move on the drain pipe. So if, any wearing or cutting from the straps occur, they will be cutting the small strips of pipe you glued on the black pipe. This way, it will never be any problem of the strap cutting your drain. It is best to be safe and do it now then on the road which will never be convenient. Just my 2 cents worth........
Thank you. We are going to visit this.
😎👍🏻
If you read the BLM full rules. Gray is OK to let out on the ground unless local laws prohibit it. In Arizona the state has a law that prohibits gray water that has had body contact. So sink water ok but not shower water. I'm working on a system to filter gray to flush with and spray on the dusty roads.
I always knew levels were overrated
Do you have to winterize or insulate external drain pipes? I’m researching to do my own conversion and just wondering how that all works.
I would so hire y’all to help with mine 😭😭
Nice!
I would have cut a service hatch in the side of the bus for that long pipe to thread through, just in case it needed to come out, fix a leak etc, but otherwise nice work again Mike.
Mike, what did you use for bushings going up through the floor to protect the drain pipes from rubbing?
I hope that you put extra strapping on. There will be allot of vibrations and movement while driving the bus down these bumpy streets
I am not looking forward to this part of my build.
I did not know that kitchen sink water was considered black water and can not go to ground.
I am going to have to reconsider my existing plan, I like the valve to allow the shower water go to ground, when allowed to do so. I don't think you can do that in Texas though.
Thanks for sharing
Mike from Texas,Take Memories,Leave Footprints
Idk if it helps but I was just on this website and saw that they had a section about Texas! Apparently a lot of the southern states are leaning toward greywater friendly legislation. waterwisegroup.com/greywater-education/laws-in-your-state/
where did you see that it was considered black water? it's gray water.
@@rekostarr7149 I don't recall where I read/heard that over a year ago but iirc it had something to do with the food waste/grease/oils from food prep and dish washing in the water that deemed it to be black water and there for could not be dumped on the ground directly. This definition for black/gray and the rules of being directly dumped to ground of probably vary from state to state like a lot of laws/rules do.
We believe in you, too..!!
water proof jb weld.
Please use your safety goggles
Where is your Hepvo for the washing machine? Are you putting on the inside of the enclosure for the washing machine?
Actually, the shower and washing machine water both go through the same Hepvo, right before it goes into the tank (after the 2-way Big Ol' Honker Valve). In the video, this is where Mike was sawing at 6:25 because he had forgotten the Hepvo! 😂 If we end up having any odor from the washing machine drain pipe, we could install another hepvo valve there quite easily later on. ~K
The second you noticed the sink drain hole into the grey water tank was too big I did all the cursing for you!
There was some necessary editing... 😁
What about grease build up plugging the vent?
Ewwwwwwww, I just visualized that...! Well, I'm kind of a sink-nazi when it comes to grease and I'm OCD about plate scraping, so I'm hoping we'll be ok! But now you made me wonder if people ever clean their tanks with Drano or something??? LOL! 😂
I’m not trying to be rude by any means, like your videos, they help me as I prepare to get my skoolie, but I get your name and pin behind it, but have you googled Bussy? And know the slang for us gay mean? Just informing no hate
The only thing I don't quite understand is that it looks like you have to go under the bus to change the valve direction every time you wash clothes or take a shower. Or else leave it on that direction and change it to use the sink. Ideally, I guess having the valve inside the bus would be wonderful, but I admit that would seem to be impossible. Maybe I am just confused... 🙄
I guess it would depend on how long we would stay in an area. Drinking and moving every day would be hard on both of us. We plan to stay 2 weeks st a time. Switching to internal draining will be on the "preflight list".
The sink always drains into the gray tanks. The shower and washer can be switched (together) from tank to ground.
Love the bus; hate the name!
I'm so confused tho, I guess I will just put in a container under my sicks.
😁
Fyi your drain is going to be a bitch to line up at rv dumps or hooking up in a rv part where all stick and staple rvs the dump is on the driver's side
My bad, It was looking like you had the dump on the same size that mine was on... I got my skoolie already converted and had been changing things as I went to upgrade and fix problems just never got to swapping the tanks
Solids?🤢
🤣
Water is heavy
So "downunder" so called "black" water only comes from the shitter.... all other water is "grey". you had me confused for a minute as you guys have a composting toilet as will I & I don't need a "black" tank. :)
Hi Paul, FYI waterwally.com.au/greywater-systems-australia/kitchen Kitchen greywater is generally considered as a black water as it contains high levels of greases, oils and detergents and must be treated before it can be safely used a greywater resource.RegardsRory
Yes, you are correct. The only difference is, in the United States, almost universally, sink water cannot be dumped straight to ground. The laws vary state from State. So, we lumped the sink water into our Black-ish water hence why we will be dumping that instead of passing it on to the ground.
OMG! She's pulling the classic female input move. Criticize what he's doing as he's doing it and insinuate it's all going to implode on him! "I can't believe your gluing as you go"! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Yeah, that sawing around 6:25? Direct result of gluing as you go! 🤣
