A Bird In The Hand -- Hand feeding garden birds.

- "A bird in the hand is worth two ticks off any list". I get far more lasting pleasure from the trust shown by these delicate little wild creatures than I do from seeing a new species at 100 meters and crossing it off my life list.

Maurice you have worked hard to gain the trust of your garden birds. You must be a lovely human being! Birds know these things! God bless you.
for all the things people falsely value..fame ..fast cars ..clothes..looks etc..are of no spiritual value ..this is something that sinks deep into an enlightened person ..pure spirituality
+william bobinski Thank you William, it is difficult to put into words the feelings you get when you gain the trust of what are defiantly still wild creatures that are usually very wary of contact with people.
It's a privilege and timeless joy to experience this trust. They recognise a kindly, sympatico frequency.
I to have been lucky enough, albeit along time ago,but it never leaves you, simple pleasures are the best...
Francis would smile….

How can 22 people dislike such a great video is beyond me
What a lovely way to spend some time with the little birds. I'm jealous.
Thank you, its difficult to express the feeling you get when they become confident enough to sit on your hand.
I expect with a little time, the Black Capped Chickadees back home would be eating out of the hand. They're already very friendly and will let you get to within a foot or two with out panic. They seem to enjoy interacting with one when you speak to them.

What a beautiful film, full of love and kindness! Thank you!
Even though I can't see the birds in person, it's still very cool when one goes on your hand. Great video!
This so awesome. It's so amazing to see how they gain their trust knowing that they are not in danger. Absolutely beautiful.
so incredible how birds trust his hand and wait while he puts more meal worms in his hand, it is so cute.
Had a busy day at work ,found this video and what a lovely way to relax and listen to the sound of nature.
To watch wild birds feed out of your hand is just amazing.
The trust you have gained with these birds is so rewarding .
Thank you for sharing this wonderful well captured video .
Wonderful video. It must have taken ages to earn that trust from them. But your patience has been richly rewarded. And deserved.
Wow the video is absolutely amazing love seeing how the wild birds gain your trust and feed from your hand absolutely brilliant
This warms my heart so much, I love watching videos of building trust with animals, I was laughing when the birds were getting 3-4 of the food had and had their little beaks stuffed.
Thank you Brandi for your kind comments. It is a wonderful feeling you get from gaining the trust of these beautiful but vulnerable little creatures.
I once rescued a sparrow that got trapped in our greenhouse, it flew into the glass a few times and was flapping around on the floor in a daze. I gently grabbed it and took it outside and held my hand up to let it fly away. instead it just sat there on my hand looking at me as if to say aren't you going to finish me off😁 after a while it flew not far away and perched on an apple tree. I felt really good after that. at the moment we have a crow nesting in our wash-house and has built a massive nest of twigs. we never disturb nesting birds wherever they build a home even if it's a bit of an inconvenience. We have lots of birds because we feed them all year round and in winter time we have fat balls and nuts to satisfy the masses! always a lot if chirping going on that goes on well into the evening. great video by the way.👏👍
Absolutely brilliant to watch this. Reminded me of my late Gran & Grandads house, they gained the trust of Robin which used to fly in as soon as my Grandad opened the door in the morning, and would stand on their kitchen table looking for crumbs / scraps. Absolutely amazing.
Thank you Alex, I very much appreciate your comments.
I thoroughly ENJOYED this video!!!!
I don't care where you have been in the world or what you have done. This is pretty darn fantastic!! Your patience has surely paid off! :)
Thank you for your generous comments, the pleasure I get from these little bird makes the time and effort spent in getting them to trust me so worth while.
You're welcome. One of my favorite stories is The Secret Garden. I like to dream of being in such a lovely place one day and this kind of thing happening...with lots of patience of course! ;)
The Bird Whisperer. I love it when they try to grab as many as they can at one time.
I have been mad about birds for years 💕 and although I feed them regularly, I have never tried feeding them out of my hands. It’s now October & I’ve been doing a lot of tidying up in my garden of late, and my resident Robin has been hard at my tail looking for baby snails and worms I may disturb. So now they know me, I’m gonna try & feed them from my hand 🤗. Here’s hoping 🙏. I’ll be sure to report back to guys 👍
So cute birds and human friendship.
Thanks so much for sharing this. I have many different types of birds who visit my garden daily and the black bird wakes me up around 5 a.m but it doesn't disturb me, it is so beautiful I fall back to sleep. Love, love the birds, but haven't got to the stage where they feed from my hand am being patient, as you said it does take a lot of patience, they have started to fly toward me but are a little hesitant, the jackdaws were shy but now they land in my garden whilst I am quite close, this is new as prior to this they were very shy. I have to gain their trust, as I had some neighbours with kids who were cruel to the birds, thankfully they have moved. The Jackdaws, have even started following me when I go out for walks!
It is heartwarming the friendship I have with birds, so rewarding...makes me cry with joy at times watching them, and when they welcome me all excited , sparrows, tits, doves, Jackdaws, it pulls at my heart strings.
Where do you buy your live worms from? , I buy the dried mealworms but now there are chicks to feed would prefer to buy the live worms. Thanks
+ali walker Thank you Ali for your comments and for subscribing, I am really pleased that you are getting so much pleasure from your birds. If you really want to try and get birds to feed from your hand I would start off with the robin and the best time of the year to do that is in the spring when they have got young ones to feed as that is when they are at their boldest. To see how I did it take a look at my web page 'The Secret Life of the Robin'. www.mbaker.co.uk/THE%20SECRET%20LIFE%20OF%20THE%20ROBIN.htm Some pet shops sell live mealworms but I get mine on line at Livefoods Direct www.livefoodsdirect.co.uk/?gclid=Cj0KEQjw6Ya5BRDdyOewyo_Z_64BEiQA-fVKe-UqkGfs8HhFh3R3V3BN32gmaQy3Rm7MW9OHKzIYqRgaAiUK8P8HAQ At this time of year I have a standing order with them for 2 Kg of regular mealworms a week!!! Continue to enjoy your birds, Maurice :-)
+Maurice Baker
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply, I will definitely take your advice re starting with the Robin. Yes patience is the key lol!
Oh and the for posting the links very helpful, the pound shop meal worms do not last long enough, not at this time of year but yes is such a blessing, I love the birds who visit me daily so much, the welcome they give you pulls on my heart strings, they are so adorable.
The first chicks I've seen this year are the sparrows, can't wait to see the baby chicks from the tits and other birds, I love them all the same, they all have to eat but when you develop a relationship with them it is something else!
I really can't believe they've started to follow me into town, today two pigeons, a magpie and a few jackdaws followed me, it is quite amusing as when I spot them, they seem to pretend to be preoccupied and fly off lol but show up again, waiting for me to leave the market, I had some funny looks with the jackdaws calling to me from people, especially when I started speaking to them lol!..I will have to film this and post it on Facebook. Thanks again for replying, so very kind of you. lovely to meet a kindred spirit who loves birds so much! 🐣 🐥 🐦 🐤
ali walker it's people like you who make the difference and are genuinely responsible for spreading love and passion towards birds and animals. Love you and may God continue to bless you dear.
Hello Maurice it's so lovely to see people in touch with our wildlife. I have birds that I care for that for various reasons cannot be released and others that visit for treats too and it makes me and hubby very happy. Enjoy your garden friends

I love these creatures. I actually had a small bird which inadvertantly flew into my upstairs window not so long ago - there are a few of them that live in the hedge below the window. Anyway, I tried to encourage it towards the window to go back, but of course it just saw me as a threat and flew into the other bedroom and it burrowed itself into a pile of clothes in the corner so i had to grab it and then put it back out the window. It must have been terrified, and it is frustrating because like many animals, you wish that you can tell them that you mean no harm and are helping them
Yes they do tend to panic, but at least you did the right thing for it.
I'm surprised they're so brave and they are not afraid.
Thank you for your comment. It's really just a matter of gaining their trust. In the spring when they have young nestlings to feed and the urge to find food for them can make them quite bold. When the breeding season has finished many of them revert back to to being much more cautious.
How enchanting how you got them beautiful birds to eat from your hand is amazing
The birds love and trust you,it must have taken remarkable patience to do this. What a beautiful video Thank you Maurice, I envy you, but in a nice way.
Thank you for your most generous comments, it does take a while to gain there confidence but it is most rewarding when you do.
Maurice Baker I bet it is Maurise. You are a great guy. You love little birds You are the best!
Maurice Baker I'm currently trying to develop trust with a beautiful bird that has built it's nest on my porch. how long did it take you to gain their trust?
Very impressive, not a lot of people can gain a bird's trust to that degree, thanks for sharing!
Love the designer hand rest! Brilliant video!
Joy of joys, thank you so much Maurice for sharing your friendship with the birds with us
How beautiful.
I find Robins very cheeky and crafty....love them.
To be honest, I love all birds and enjoy watching them feeding from the multitude of seeds, peanuts, diet balls etc. Also, love watching them having a splash in their bird bath.
Lovely video. Thanks.
Suet balls not diet balls......sorry !
How lovely! I used to "have" a pet robin who ate from my hand. this is gorgeous video.
Such a lovely video to watch , I had a robin that I hand fed ,he had me very well trained as soon as he whistled I would go out with mealworms and he old come when I whistled
Thank you so much for this wonderful video.Birds are beautiful fascinating creatures, there is something so calming about them...

Hello Maurice. How very wonderful. Thankyou kind man.
beautiful video
This is the most special hand feeding garden birds video that I have viewed so far. Fascinating watching the little garden birds looking so relaxed and comfortable eating off your hand (hope I am right that it is your hand, Maurice). Thank you very much for sharing this interesting video.
+kwee eng Thank you, your generous comments are much appreciated. It is very satisfying to be able to gain their trust and yes it is my hand.
Thank you Maurice for sharing this absolutely beautiful video. I still feel guilty about passing judgement apon a elderly lady while I was sitting in my vehicle. I was waiting for someone to finish Grocery shopping. I assumed she was littering, throwing out cigarette butts. The way she was looking around as if she was wondering who was watching her? All she was doing was unloading bread crumbs, pieces of broken up bread out of plastic bag. I didn't realize it until after she left that she was in fact feeding the birds in the parking lot. To my amazement the birds were chirping about, fluttering about with happiness. :)
This truly is one of life’s greatest experiences right in your own backyard
Thank you Leni, it's difficult to express in word that feeling of being at one with nature when you have won the trust of wild birds that have a natural wariness of man.
I'm so jealous. I love how trusting these birds are just to get a quick snack from a kindly human. Awesome video.
so beautiful.. makes me happy just by watching. thank you for uploading!
Thank you Dani for your comments, I'm pleased that you enjoyed watching the video.

Wonderful to see bird feeding from hands.
3:15 love that one, so impatient XD
+Plasma Phi Yes, it has a nest full of hungry young chicks to feed.
as a bird owner / trainer to gain any birds trust to this level is hard work and a ton of patie nce , well done it must be so lovely to have them come and land on your hand or finger and watch them eat , and they have no fear from you even when you move your hand to feed them , i am sooo jealouse like most im sure
That’s very sweet, must have taken years of practice!
Thank you so much for your comments.
I have added a link to an article on my website that explains how I managed to get these wild birds to trust me and finally feed from my hand. I don’t consider these birds as tame but just trusting. I hope you are successful if you try this out with your birds. THE SECRET LIFE OF THE ROBIN www.mbaker.co.uk/THE%20SECRET%20LIFE%20OF%20THE%20ROBIN.htm
I love birds ❤
I love hand feeding garden birds so this was of special interest to me.....gave it a thumbs up...well done.
I did this in Paris once when an old lady in a park gave me some bird food and yes this is such a wonderful thing.
I hate apartment living. We’re not allowed to feed the birds but course I do anyway. But I’ve been reported before, so for me, I take a couple cups of their food, sometimes I’ll throw in fruit or nuts- and then enjoy them through my window. You’re blessed with peace, quiet, space. I’d die to have such serenity. And you’re so so kind. I wish you all the peace and good in this world. Giving back to nature, that’s beautiful to me. Go anyone who cares about animals so passionately ❤️
I can't imagine how long this must have taken. Sir, your perseverance and your patience are remarkable. Simply amazing.

Very nice. An inspiration to me as I have just got a mated pair of Robins to feed directly from my hand. Mealworms, waxworms, two tiny rumbling bellies and a bit of patience. Now they come when I call and no hesitation to come to hand.

+chrissy jones Thank you Chrissy for your very kind comments. Yes it is a wonderful felling to gain the trust of these delicate little wild beauties and I hope that one day your wish comes true. My advice is to try first with a robin to see if you can get it to come for food and then progressively get closer.
Wow - are those live meal worms? I heard birds love them! I recently started to feed birds but I am happy to watch from the end of my garden it’s amazing how smart birds are 🕊
