The thing that really impresses me about Penny’s Big Breakaway is how dedicated to the yo-yo gimmick it is. Everything involves the yo-yo. Sprinting is riding on the yo-yo like a unicycle. The air dash throws the yo-yo ahead and then uses the string to pull you to it. They didn’t HAVE to tie those moves to the yo-yo, but they did. To make the game more focused on its gimmick. And that shows love and attention.
Just what I would except from a game made by Evening Star games (libe that Knuckles Chaotix reference), they did make Sonic Mania alongside Headcannon after all.
It's interesting how Mario games are looking more weird and embracing the weirdness and almost dream-like aspects of the series. A kind of like "now that I think about it, this is weird, so why don't we try this weird thing too?"
I think they struck gold in that area, since Mario lacks any real gimmick, they can do anything they want. I believe Odyssey is the epoch of that oh so good weirdness.
Because that's what Mario is supposed to be. He's a guy that fights turtles and eats mushrooms with the goal of saving his girlfriend (who happens to be a princess). Remember that scene when Mario first turned into a frog in Mario Odyssey? We need more of those weird, out there concepts and visuals if we want to see Mario return to form and succeed with the new games

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and I’m now comfortable saying that Pikmin 4 feels like a fan-Pikmin-game. More human stuff, night mode, like 8 playable characters including Olimar’s dog Bulby (I know Oatchi is different, but he’s still a dog), bringing back the caves … like, this game feels identical to one off the pitches for a Pikmin sequel I read online as a kid. I believe for the splat fest choices, that they're deliberately picking ice cream flavours to match with ink colors, and brown ink would look like... something else. Not exactly something fun to think about
Believe it or not, the most exciting thing out of this direct to me was Batman Arkham trilogy… ever since I bought the switch I’ve wondered how awesome would’ve been to fly through Gotham in handheld mode or just play those games at comute… that’s finally becoming a reality to me haha
I feel like the only reason they didn't have Chocolate in the Splatfest instead of Mint Chip is because they knew Chocolate would just win in a landslide (or, a _mudslide_ one might say)
This definitely was an odd direct and I love it. It was so Nintendo in its curated novelty, it felt like they had a general theme. They are trying lots of interesting stuff now that maybe wouldn’t have been as exciting in the earlier years of Switch. I’m most excited for Mario Wonder. Has some DKC vibes to it as well as NSMB mixed with all the jr high school jokes kids used to make about Mario taking shrooms.
I hope the elephant power up is excessive to Mario or Luigi, kinda like in Mario 64 DS, because I don’t think Nintendo will have the audacity to include elephant Yoshi and make him as cursed as possible
I have trust issues with Nintendo …. Edit: and I believe they announced all the games to keep the switch alive until the next console is released along with a new 3D Mario. (and possibly a new DK and everything that we are craving for).
I think the best way to articulate why I'm not excited about the new warioware is pointing out: we just got one two years ago, and it also means we aren't getting a new or ported rhythm heaven for a bit, since the team was busy. Get it together was fun, but it seemed to be setting down foundation for the series to go new places in the future, become more of its own thing, than just a minigame collection hosted by wario. And then we just went back. Even as someone who's a moderate warioware fan I just, didn't want to see this.
“Why mint chip? Why not chocolate?” The splatfest colours are based on ice cream flavours and I question the wisdom of having a game where you squirt brown fluid across the stage.
on second thought, didn't we already have brown ink for team milk chocolate? what's the harm in doing it again? and i don't think the fact that we had a chocolate themed splatfest should mean that we don't have chocolate as a team in the ice cream splatfest
As a yoyoer penny’s big breakaway is so hype. 1: the breakaway is an actual yoyo trick that’s fairly obscure so this tells me they know actual yoyo stuff and it looks so fun. Very excited to try it
I am not really excited for it myself but I just have to say this type of comments make me so happy, a hobbyist sees some hobby related stuff, appreciates it and gets hyped. I am so happy for you. Hope this game won’t disappoint
There are people in Japan and Korea that have big problems with mint-flavored food as they feel it tastes like toothpaste when in fact it's meant to be the other way around to make toothpaste taste like a fresh treat. Mint chip might've been included to be a controversial choice for them while also including chocolate in the chip part.
Kamek being in Mario Kart was honestly the highlight for me lol. Him and King Bobomb have been the two characters I wanted added most and I didn't think either of them would actually be included in one the dlc waves but here he is. Also I love Luigis Mansion Dark Moon and I'm super excited that its getting a remaster for switch! Weird that they aren't doing the original game though to complete the trilogy.
On the splatfest theme: yes i agree that mint chip isn't really 'in a set' with chocolate, strawberry, or vanilla, but they did just do an entirely chocolate themed splatfest, and i think they do try to avoid too much repetition in the themes. Also mint chocolate chip is my favorite ice cream flavor so i may be biased haha
I just know you're freaking out over the Pikmin reveals. I'm super excited for the Super Mario RPG, and let's not forget the epic meme that is Elephant Mario. All so great.
Like Penny Snapcube said, I'd describe this direct as "Nintendo Direct Squished" because very character just got half of their height removed in almost all games shown at the start and inbetween.
As someone who is super familiar with SMRPG and the different toads from the original are all still here like we saw at the marrymore at 9:46 and in peaches castle with the chancellor at 9:42 so I don’t think all will be replaced with generic ones UPDATE: there have been more images being shown on Nintendo’s Japanese website for the game and there’s 2 screenshots that prove definitively that they didn’t replace the original Mario characters with generic ones. One shows the first boss against the hammer bros and another show a yoshi race where you can see toads to the right that are the same as the original
Actually, if you look at the throne room one minor change is that Toad and the Not Toad Toads are now visually distinct. Toad has a blue vest while the rest have red vests. In the original all the generic Toads were indistinguishable from Toad.
@@TheLegoNation Yeah in the original all the Mushroom Kingdom guards had the same Sprite as Toad. Red spots and Blue vest. Now they are wear red vests but Toad is still wearing blue. It is interesting because outside of sports games Toad hasn't been used much with Capt. Toad seeming to replace him or just being replaced with generic Toads himself. So its neat to see him be distinct in a game where he wasn't before.
as a chocolate ENTHUSIAST, a chief of all things choccy, count cocoa, i was absolutely devastated at the splatfest teams. they KNEW team chocolate was gonna sweep, they were just too scared to see our carnage
@@BahhBahhBrownSheep Have the opinion of the actual game all you want, but there was a magic in that trailer that I have never felt watching anything else.
Arlo you can see the truth behind the lack of chocolate in the splatfest if you look deeper. Each team in the splatfest had colors corresponding to their flavor. They didn't want a brown team.
Honestly I'm crazy hyped for the Super Mario RPG! And that Peach game has me very excited as well! I've never played Pikmin, got a Dreamcast instead of the Game Cube, but this latest direct, really makes me want to get into it! Elephant Mario is giving me... reservations? I might be wrong, but I think this is the first time he's ever fully fused into something via a power-up. Usually he just gets a costume change, but here he's 89% elephant.
im so happy that pikmin 4 is getting a demo. i honestly dont know if the pikmin series is for me, but i really want to try it out! i just wish every game got a demo. i would get so many more games
@@roachdoggjr7020 yup I usually just play it for an hour or two to see if I like it. For me games are huge purchases so I just can't afford to buy a game and not like it.
To me this direct is 15 minutes of pure ecstasy with the Mario and Pikmin news, couples with the MSG collection and Detective Pikachu announcement, and the rest is just that one Just Dance showcase.
If they put in plain chocolate as an option, it would've probably been the runaway favorite and I'm sure they knew it. Mint chip was entirely intentional.
Was worried this was going to be a placeholder Direct, since most of the things in the beginning we already knew about and a few had even been announced in other showcases, but then they just kept surprising me.
Would've been the perfect Direct to announce it - a game with Playable Waluigi would be as Weird as you could get from Nintendo - and we have WarioWare!😂
If any Metroid fans were left dissapointed, it was actually in the Direct. In the trailer for the Super Mario RPG Remake, you can see a Samus figure in Booster's toy box.
My biggest worry for pikmin 4 is that there isn’t going to be any main characters to care about. You create your own avatar and so far they seem lifeless like miis. I hope they bring back the old captains we loved or at least find a way to make the new characters entertaining.
It looks like there’s gonna be plenty of characters to care about. Did you forget about the whole mechanic of rescuing crew members? They made a big deal about it
I'm really interested in the Pikmin series now that all 4 games are on the Switch. I have 3 on the Wii U and tried playing it, but I didn't know what I was doing so I gave up. I can't play it now since my gamepad has a slight drift, so this 2nd wind (for lack of a better term) for the series has really piqued my interest.
I have never played Splatoon 3, but I am pretty sure the reason for the 3 ice cream choices in the Splatfest being Vanilla, Strawberry and mint chip over something like choclate is, that they wanted to use the colors of the ice cream for the ink. Something tells me covering the entire map brown was not appealing to the developers.
I'm most excited about Star Ocean 2. I haven't ever played any of the Star Ocean games, but the art style intrigued me, the premise interested me, and the game fully captured my attention when it went into combat and the audio descended into a cacophony of character battle voice lines. I love me a JRPG with battle voice line soup.
To me, this direct was great. Nintendo came out swinging and showed the switch still has something in the tank till at least 2024. It also shows Nintendo knows what people want and are actually starting to give it to us.
I'm a little surprised you never clicked with Super Mario RPG before. It really did set the stage for Paper Mario with its humor, the 'collect some stars then go fight baddy' plot structure, and input commands to hit harder with your attacks and reduce incoming damage. But I suppose they are different enough that this earlier version may just not have clicked. If you give the remake a shot I hope you don't bounce off it again.
This direct was AMAZING! 4 Mario games with the return of SUPER MARIO RPG and an actual "new" Super Mario Bros. Game! Plus a peach game. Can't wait to play it!
idk if this is just nostalgia but as a kid i absolutely loved dark moon. i would play it 500 times over every time we went on a road trip and seeing it on the switch is very nice. i thought the game was very well done, the atmosphere felt nice and the theming was very cool. im very excited for a switch port
Me a couple of days ago: Hmmm, I've been playing too many serious RPGs, I think I'm in the mood for a quirky platformer This Nintendo direct: Penny's big breakaway and Mario Wonder (they both look EXACTLY like what I was craving)
No doubt in my mind the Princess Peach game mini announcement was to ride the coattails of the movie while non-mario fans who didn't really know her name still remember her from the movie!
I burst into tears when they showed the Peach game. It's all I've ever wanted, since I never played Super Princess Peach. I continued crying for Luigi's Mansion, since 3 is my favorite Switch game. And my mom is getting me Super Mario Bros Wonder for my birthday. I loved this Direct.
I got so excited when I saw Pikmin 1 & 2 on switch. I played 2 as a kid and Ive been anxiously waiting for 4 to come out so I could revisit it but I was also super wishing I could play 1&2 for nostalgia and now I can!

Believe it or not, the most exciting thing out of this direct to me was Batman Arkham trilogy… ever since I bought the switch I’ve wondered how awesome would’ve been to fly through Gotham in handheld mode or just play those games at comute… that’s finally becoming a reality to me haha
OHH MY GOOD FINALLY SOMEONE WHO FEELS THE SAME
I feel like the only reason they didn't have Chocolate in the Splatfest instead of Mint Chip is because they knew Chocolate would just win in a landslide (or, a _mudslide_ one might say)
What a _Smear Campaign_ that would've been...
That and they probably didn't want the area to be covered in brown.
@@lydiajulianprower8356And white fluids are better?
@@blazeplayz9703 Let's not go there.
@@lydiajulianprower8356they’ve done brown before. they’ve done white before. they knew they couldn’t handle both at once
Elephant Mario is cool and all, but wait until you see Elephant Luigi, Toad, Peach, Daisy, and Yoshi
Yes
I hope the elephant power up is excessive to Mario or Luigi, kinda like in Mario 64 DS, because I don’t think Nintendo will have the audacity to include elephant Yoshi and make him as cursed as possible
Possibly more cursed idea, it turns them all into different animals and we get human Yoshi.
Rule 34’s already having its fun with the concept.
@@magicfishhobo381That’s insane but I need that to happen.
I am so happy that they brought Pikmin 1 and 2 to the switch, cannot wait to get them
I'm glad i'm not the only one who felt a weird vibe on this Direct. I enjoyed it a lot, particularly pikmin and pokemon, but it still felt strange.
Too good to be true
Why not chocolate?”
The splatfest colours are based on ice cream flavours and I question the wisdom of having a game where you squirt brown fluid across the stage.
Literally everyone would pick chocolate for the poop jokes, I can see your point
@@JDLMgreat, now everybody will pick Vanilla for the cum jokes
Doesn’t seem much different than squirting white liquid across the screen.
on second thought, didn't we already have brown ink for team milk chocolate? what's the harm in doing it again? and i don't think the fact that we had a chocolate themed splatfest should mean that we don't have chocolate as a team in the ice cream splatfest
There is the possibility that it's just Big Man trying to subvert expectations, since it does seem to be his Team for the Splatfest.
I love this direct so much because the company finally took a risk
Which they never do anymore
As a yoyoer penny’s big breakaway is so hype. 1: the breakaway is an actual yoyo trick that’s fairly obscure so this tells me they know actual yoyo stuff and it looks so fun. Very excited to try it
…isn’t a breakaway the side toss that you go into the trapize? Thats not obscure at all?
Definitely my surprise game of the Direct, it looked really fun
I am not really excited for it myself but I just have to say this type of comments make me so happy, a hobbyist sees some hobby related stuff, appreciates it and gets hyped. I am so happy for you. Hope this game won’t disappoint
It gave me klanoa vibes and once they said it was made by the mania team I knew I have to check it out
There are people in Japan and Korea that have big problems with mint-flavored food as they feel it tastes like toothpaste when in fact it's meant to be the other way around to make toothpaste taste like a fresh treat. Mint chip might've been included to be a controversial choice for them while also including chocolate in the chip part.
i kinda feel the same way actually. Don't really like minty chocolate mostly because it's just toothpaste flavor lol
TIL they decided mint should be toothpaste flavor so that it'd taste nice... what
Kamek being in Mario Kart was honestly the highlight for me lol.
Ooooooooh yeeeeeeesssss
That was my first thought with Luigi's mansion too. Why not do the first one that I would think a lot of people havent played
Nobody with a brain should pay those insane prices. Nintendo fans don't exactly have a high bar though so this is predictable
@@johndodo2062 What?
@@johndodo2062 they didnt even mention any prices in the direct
@@johndodo2062 BOT LMAO
Like Penny Snapcube said, I'd describe this direct as "Nintendo Direct Squished" because very character just got half of their height removed in almost all games shown at the start and inbetween.
We already had a Splatfest centered entirely around chocolate back in February. I think that’s why Mint Chip is in its place this time.
if there was chocolate i would have a solid choice but idk about a team rn
@@TaxeAndStuff Same. I am split between mint chocolate chip and vanilla. If it was real life I would go cookie dough 🍪
Can't wait to see the elephant forms for Daisy and Peach
I feel like the bizarreness of super mario wonder almost makes it feel like a spiritual successor to super paper mario. I'm so excited for it
The whole aesthetic reminds me of Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, personally.
I’ve been looking forward to seeing your take on the direct all day!
As someone who is super familiar with SMRPG and the different toads from the original are all still here like we saw at the marrymore at 9:46 and in peaches castle with the chancellor at 9:42 so I don’t think all will be replaced with generic ones
UPDATE: there have been more images being shown on Nintendo’s Japanese website for the game and there’s 2 screenshots that prove definitively that they didn’t replace the original Mario characters with generic ones. One shows the first boss against the hammer bros and another show a yoshi race where you can see toads to the right that are the same as the original
As Chuggaaconroy said: "Finally! The Mario RPGs aren't trash!!"
Actually, if you look at the throne room one minor change is that Toad and the Not Toad Toads are now visually distinct.
Toad has a blue vest while the rest have red vests. In the original all the generic Toads were indistinguishable from Toad.
@@verdantmistral442 hmmm I never noticed that
@@TheLegoNation Yeah in the original all the Mushroom Kingdom guards had the same Sprite as Toad.
I’d called this direct the most Nintendo direct ever lol very fun and whimsical
Penny's Big Breakaway looks awesome and I don't know why it's giving me Gex vibes, but I can only hope it's as good.
This was honestly a contender for the most hype direct since the Everyone Is Here Trailer and I’m not joking in the slightest. I am so full of joy.
Smash is overrated tho, there were better directs that that
@@BahhBahhBrownSheep Have the opinion of the actual game all you want, but there was a magic in that trailer that I have never felt watching anything else.
@@Mystic-Aidan Everyone is here made me happy in a way an ad has no right to do. It just kept getting better and better.
100% agree. This one hit me in all of the right ways the same way that smash ultimate direct did.
It's been said over and over but the Penny's game looks like it would have been right at home as a hidden gem platformer on the 64.
If they had shown Metroid Prime 4, this would have been the best Direct ever. But as a Mario fan, I'm extremely happy.
It looks like Mario finally graduated from shrooms to peyote flowers which are a whole different level of intense.
This Direct reminded me of the GameCube Era
I need more of this
Arlo you can see the truth behind the lack of chocolate in the splatfest if you look deeper. Each team in the splatfest had colors corresponding to their flavor. They didn't want a brown team.
Haven’t watched yet, but I was right there screaming with you for all the Pikmin news!! It’s truly a sight to behold
So many games/series I have bought and gotten into due to demos. They really are great
I just pirate stuff to try before I buy. If they don't want me to do that then make a damn demo lol
@@mikehunt5542and then you buy after? based
@@roachdoggjr7020 yup I usually just play it for an hour or two to see if I like it. For me games are huge purchases so I just can't afford to buy a game and not like it.
@AnaPie89 thanks :]
I really hope Nintendo can finally losen up a little, and not make everything generic. This direct hints heavily towards that hope they keep it up!
To me this direct is 15 minutes of pure ecstasy with the Mario and Pikmin news, couples with the MSG collection and Detective Pikachu announcement, and the rest is just that one Just Dance showcase.
Arlo you might be the first person I've seen who wasn't absolutely thirsting over ganondorf's design.
One comment before watching, Super Mario RPG alone made this my favourite direct of all time. Super Mario Wonder sealed the deal.
on the splatfest, they already did a whole chocolate splatfest. they werent gonna throw chocolate into another one.
Exactly
If they put in plain chocolate as an option, it would've probably been the runaway favorite and I'm sure they knew it. Mint chip was entirely intentional.
I am happy they are delivering with the Mario stuff. I was very pleased
Was worried this was going to be a placeholder Direct, since most of the things in the beginning we already knew about and a few had even been announced in other showcases, but then they just kept surprising me.
I’m assuming they went with mint chip instead of chocolate because a field of brown goo might look unappealing.
Mario trusts his mushroom foraging a bit too much, and Wonder is just the result of his luck catching up to him.
To be honest: It was the best Direct I have ever seen ❤
When they were about to announce the peach game and said mario wasn't the only one getting a game immediately thought waluigi lol
ME TOO!!!
Why don’t you care about yourself
It looks like there’s gonna be plenty of characters to care about. Did you forget about the whole mechanic of rescuing crew members? They made a big deal about it
I thought people liked miis
@@megastarwarsrocks99 🤣
So many elephants in this direct…
Nintendo has elephantitus
Elephantitus 🐘
I'm really interested in the Pikmin series now that all 4 games are on the Switch. I have 3 on the Wii U and tried playing it, but I didn't know what I was doing so I gave up. I can't play it now since my gamepad has a slight drift, so this 2nd wind (for lack of a better term) for the series has really piqued my interest.
With that double shadow drop today and Arlo streaming on twitch, I feel like a Pikmarathon is in order.
I quite literally just finished the live reaction. What timing.
Same!
This was the best direct in recent memory, and I’m at best a casual fan of all the franchises talked about in it.
Loving the trippy Mario - the art style looks amazing
Same
The reason they didn't choose chocolate is probably because it would be weird to see brown ink
If they're bringing back Super Mario RPG, maybe there's the smallest glimmer of hope for Paper Mario...
Press X to Doubt.
SMB Wonder is the inevitable conclusion to the question "How do we make a Mario game worth buying in a world with Mario Maker?"
To me, this direct was great. Nintendo came out swinging and showed the switch still has something in the tank till at least 2024. It also shows Nintendo knows what people want and are actually starting to give it to us.
Kamek was actually gonna be in Mario Kart 64. They replaced him with Wario, I think.
We not talking about metal gear?
This direct was AMAZING! 4 Mario games with the return of SUPER MARIO RPG and an actual "new" Super Mario Bros. Game! Plus a peach game. Can't wait to play it!
idk if this is just nostalgia but as a kid i absolutely loved dark moon. i would play it 500 times over every time we went on a road trip and seeing it on the switch is very nice. i thought the game was very well done, the atmosphere felt nice and the theming was very cool. im very excited for a switch port
I get it’s not Arlo’s thing but I’m so excited for the new warioware! One of my most played wii games Smooth Moves and this is just more of that
Smooth moves was awesome. Great game
Me a couple of days ago: Hmmm, I've been playing too many serious RPGs, I think I'm in the mood for a quirky platformer
This Nintendo direct: Penny's big breakaway and Mario Wonder (they both look EXACTLY like what I was craving)
Arlo I love your videos and your streams. I really loved the pre direct stream you did earlier it was fun to watch.
5:40 we already seen what happens when you give the internet white ink
This direct was epic and weird arlo! One of the best IN YEARS!
