- This video is the first in a little series where I follow vintage Vogue patterns and try to bring the line art on the envelopes to life! I tried to match the materials and silhouette as closely as possible with...mixed amount of success.

Complicating things for the sake of cute coordinating buttons is perfectly acceptable behavior. 😊
The chervon created by stripes lining up is so nice that it was undoubtedly worth the effort of such detailed pinning.
“It was sewn on. .../They/ were sewn on. Unfortunately when sewing sleeves, you usually have to sew 2 of them. Which means it could potentially go wrong /twice/. o_o I’m not optimistic when it comes to sleeves.”

Why are people so afraid of sleeves? I’ve seen this meme so much but I really never had an issue? Maybe I just had a really good middle school sewing teacher lol
I have always wondered why people freak out about sleeves, then I started watching UA-cam videos and saw that most of the time they were putting the sleeve in after doing the side seams... that's the problem... I was taught to put the sleeve in first then do the seam in one go - from hem to hem, industrial style... the only time I ever do the sleeve last is if/when making a 2-piece sleeve. I think I've made exactly 1 garment with 2-piece sleeves in the 40-odd years I've been sewing, and swore I'd never do it again... give me a simple sleeve any day... ;))
@@Ninjozata I made the Hamilton Spencer a while ago and let me tell you, the sleeves on that thing...I cried. I don't mind doing sleeves even if I have to use my brain more, but there were two layers of differently gathered/pleated sleeves, the bottom one made from two pieces, each layer had notches at weird places and half of them didn't match. It was one of two projects that had two days set just for doing sleeves (the other one is was my wedding dress with poofy sleeves made from chiffon).
My Grandma P taught me how to sew by sewing over pins if they were perpendicular to the needle. On her old Singers I inherited, they're solid home machines that don't blink at pins. My cheap Brother to sew minky or other shed prone fabric would riot.
Thank-You, My Mother Gifted her older Singer Sewing Machine to me. Of her 8 children I am the only one who has had a sincere lifetime love of her Singer Sewing Machine. I have as yet not been able to get my Wheelchair Accessible Sewing & Crafts Room set up. So for some years I have been watching UA-cam Videos and reading comments to help me learn more. You have helped immensely, thank-you.
Brothers are the worst sewing machines ever, I swear. I rage quit on my so many times it went to the Goodwill.

@@MegaMagicdog I have 2 Phaffs. Not my favorite. My favorite machine has been my 6020 Viking. After 50 years and 2 rebuilds it's probably not going to last much longer.

The end result of this dress was extremely cute. Lining up the stripes was absolutely worth it.
A shorter version would make an awesome summer dress.
I actually cut it from the VO for time, but my other comment on this pattern is that it should totally come with a perforated line for a shorter length! It would be such a cute sleeveless summer dress or more casual jumper dress.
I can even see it as a church dress if the guimpe were made with a pretty eyelet or crochet lace.

The first time I saw the pattern weights, I thought they were marshmallows. That sounds like a delicious addition to the laborious task of cutting everything out.
Take two turned out so, so cute!! I feel like a shortened version of the dress would be perfect to wear in the summer!
I have a tendency to put your videos on when I'm doing something else. Unfortunately it never gets done because I'm always so ensconced by your video that I end up just watching it instead!
Great content as always. 100% worth remaking the dress, it looks so much better even just on the dressform. Personally I'd cut the dress shorter and wear it as a more casual summer piece. Love it though

Your second attempt was well worth the time and effort and expense! I agreed with your critic at the end- the second little blouse was truly gorgeous! I love how the ruffles on the sleeves ended up adding so much texture. I enjoyed this video very much!
I wasn't sold on the silver guimpe but the end reveal really redeemed it. It looks radiant and low-key overshadowed the dress

I feel like I learn more about sewing every time I watch one of your sewing videos. And I think you brought me luck! I started watching this during a short break from making one of the three dresses I’m trying to finish before Easter for my girls. I then had to do sleevils next. And they couldn’t even be called sleevils. I didn’t have to unpick them for tucks even once! I think God smiled on me 😀, or at least on the sleeves. I was so sure that the second one couldn’t possibly work out as well as the first one, and then it did! I just have a hem and a zipper and whipping the lining down over the waistband and then I’m done with the first one. Two more to go, but the same pattern. I have no confidence the other two will get done, but I had backup dresses for those two, and not for the one I made the first dress for.
Anyway, I enjoyed your video very much, and am most impressed with how quickly you accomplish your sewing tasks. Your knowledge and experience are very evident, as well as inspirational.
And your buttonholes looked great! Anyone who examines them closer is too close, especially during this pandemic time.

So fabulous! Amazing and personally encouraging to see that reworking a project can be soooo worth it! I was classically trained in drawing/painting, and the instructor would have us rework copy drawings - even if we were 6 weeks in- if something we're at all off (like to the mm). Devastating. But so dang worth the professional mindset building knowing you could and would stick to getting the project right!

I always sew down my facings too (even if they are under stitched AND stitched in the ditch at the shoulders) and I always feel like I'm violating some sort of sewing law. Glad to see you do it too.
There are dozens us who do it! I think it actually saves time in the end, since you don't have to iron the facing inward after every wash!

Thank you so much for existing! I’m pretty much your dress size and height and I hated having to get such large patterns as seeing size 18/20 threw me when I started sewing. You look amazing in these dresses and make them fit you and it inspires me. The patterns are wrong for me if they don’t fit as I’m perfect as I am.
