  • I have been frustrated that when my phone (iPhone 13 pro max) is in its case, I cannot charge it in the built-in wireless charging pad in my 2020 Tesla Model 3 standard range plus. I also really like the Waze app and wanted to find a way to mount my phone so I could use Waze while driving without taking my eyes off the road. Low and behold a company name Jouwa makes an interesting charging mount solution and they asked me to test it out. What do I think? Watch the video to find out.

Hello fellow Michigan resident/Tesla owner! Thank you for doing this review, will be buying one of these mounts!

Hello fellow Michigander (and Tesla owner)! Thank you so much for your comment 😁. I think you will really like this MagSafe mount. I purchased their other, non-MagSafe mount for our other Tesla and I like that one too (the 480 degree rotation mount with wireless charging). The only downside to that one is that it does not fold away like this one. The discount code I provided in the video should work for any item from Jowua. Let me know what you think about it after you get it installed. Enjoy 😁

Why they didn’t make this item rotate around the corner confuses me. I went with the spigen mount that is similar to this. The spigen easily swivels around the corner so that you can use your phone in either landscape or portrait.

The do have one that rotates around like you describe. You can find it here - www.jowua-life.com/collections/car-mount/products/480-rotation-car-mount-with-wireless-charging. I actually have it in our Model Y. I'm not sure how it compares to the Spigen - I haven't seen the Spigen one yet. If you end up not liking the Spigen, you can get a discount on the Jowua one using the code MITESLAGUY. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on the Spigen after you install and use it. If you have time, please drop a comment here or send me an email with your thoughts 👍🏻

Thanks for making the vid to show things thing so well. I note that the subject calls this a magSafe phone charger. But it is merely magsafe compatible, correct? Only certified Magsafe stuff will charge at the full 15W. Do you have any measurements about charge rate offered by this? I'd expect nothing higher than 7.5W.

Great point and great question Darrell. Correct - MagSafe compatible. I do not know the answer to your question about charge rate, but I imagine it is less than 15W. I know that my iPhone 13 Pro Max does not lose charge when it it on this charger and the phone is on. It also doesn’t gain charge quickly in the scenario, so I expect you are correct 👍

Thanks for doing this for us! Is the friction for all the adjustments just "built in" or can you set it where you think you want it and lock it down by tightening it somehow? Have you measured the charge rate? I have to imagine 7.5W max for iPhone since this isn't a real Magsafe charger.

Thank you for watching! And great questions. The friction is built in. Other than the suction that connects to the back of the screen, nothing can be locked down. I could see the friction wearing out over time. How long would depend on how it is used and how often. I’m guessing the first spot that will get week is the joint for the actual magnet part. I don’t know from experience, just guessing because that part weighs the most so the friction needs to be strongest there. I’m sure I will find out sooner or later because it is still installed in our Model 3.
As far as charge rate, I don’t know the answer. My assumption is that it doesn’t do the full 15W MagSafe rate and is likely the 7.5W rate you mentioned. That is a guess - I don’t know for sure.

Do you have any use for your 2 Tesla wireless charging cradles at the front of the console now? Can you think of any way to utilize them with a 13 ProMax? I have a Tesla Y '21 and need a new phone, but am possibly going to choose a 13Pro if I find out it can wirelessly charge... A review of different cases that allow for charging would be very helpful!

Yes - we still use them. I'm the only one in our family with a Pro Max model phone. My wife and kids both have smaller phones and they charge great on the console charger. If I take my phone out of the case, it charges fine. I don't have a 13 pro, but my wife has an 11 pro. I think those are about the same size. She has a pretty thin case on hers and it charges fine in the built in console charger 👍🏻 And I appreciate the future video idea - thank you ☺️

I am in the same boat asking the same questions. With the iPhone 14 pro, the camera pods stick out so far, that there's no way of placing the phone (with or without case) on a flat charging mat. The camera pod protrusions (either the lenses themselves or the protective surround of the case) will not allow proper contact. Charging would be slow at best, and also hit-and-miss if it even works at all.
My 2018 M3 did not come with charging pads (the initial idea is that we install cords and have our phones physically plugged in while sitting on the factory mat) but I quickly swapped in a Qi charging mat that has worked reasonably well, though maddeningly slow. The charging basically keeps up with the daily battery drain of the phone being on. BARELY gets ahead of the charging. So now I'm looking for genuine MagSafe charging. But this means having the back of the phone sitting only a puck, and not a full mat. I think I'll take out my Qi charging mats and reinstall the OEM phone mat. Might even put back the charging cables! Because I'll be using a real Magsafe puck mounted somehow to the center screen as MI Tesla Guy shows here (but with my home-brew to get full charging capability)
