No doubt building a PC is more affordable but check this out - Dell's 5K Monitor which is JUST a monitor is the same price as this 5K iMac amzn.to/1T5H7XU
***** Yeh, but anyone needing 5k will have the money anyway plus, if you are working with 4K footage a lot of people need more power than the low powered mobile GPU in the iMac. Although, like you said, it is an amazing price and package if you want an entry into 5K, also the real estate can be really useful especially if you only have the iMac as your monitor.
***** I'm not dissing PCs nor would I try and convince PC users to switch to mac. I've edited a bunch of 4K videos on a 5K iMac and having that extra workspace is nice AND it edit/exports like a champ. Final Cut Pro X is so damn optimized it's crazy.
***** Yeh, I use both Mac and PC and i think they are both great. The iMac 5K is not for me but i can defiantly appreciate what apple is doing and the push for higher resolution in the market place. And, yeh, FCP X is really well optimised from what i've done using a Mac Pro for a brief amount of time. It's one of those things where it is great for most power users with a select few who need a little extra power. But, damn, that price is so good, hope to see a 5K cinema display tho because a mac Pro with 5k = Awesome setup. Thanks for replying ;)
SKY HIGH Destroys this in terms of performance? Yes, absolutely. In terms of compactness, aesthetics, and screen? Nope, not a chance. Good luck finding a cheap 5K IPS monitor.
Wiikendz And where, pray tell, will you get a screen that is priced comparatively? The iMac, by some weird twists of fate, is the cheapest way to get into UHD+ quality. Why anyone would buy a desktop PC in this price range is beginning to look ridiculous.
JPM i think if you are serious into video, then an iMac is not what you are going to have, you would have the budget for a 5K monitor plus a Xeon based workstation with a cuda GPU and probably a PCI-E SSD. This is only sensible for photgraphers and graphic designers, for video, it doesnt make much sense. If you are on a budget, you probably won't have the camera equipment to justify needing more than a 4K display.
the good hustler Nothing was said about video production. In Apple's line-up, the iMac was always positioned as an enthusiast PC, not a pro workhorse. The machine you described is absolutely _not_ available for $2000. However, I am a graphic designer and developer - the screen real estate, pixel density, and color take huge precedence over pure computational/graphical performance. Plus you are forgetting architects, sound engineers, high-end offices - basically, anyone who sits at a desk and _doesn't_ do video editing. IMHO, Apple has created a superb value proposition with this machine. Not to mention that it's a downright beautiful object.
JPM true, but you said why would anyone else by a PC in this price range. those other jobs don't need a imac screen and can need the extra power. I actually work in architecture and need a multi screen setup for maximum efficiency, for $2000, you can get a very powerful PC with a lot of storage, ram which is really important, dedicated GPU for 3D applications and 2 or 3 monitors. I would suggest it would be a bad choice to go for an iMac for any serious work other than graphic design or photography. I simply could not do my job as fast with an iMac. If you have a larger business, spending $2000 a piece on a Mac would not be best use of money when you could get equivalent PCs for much cheaper.
I just purchased a 5k imac with the fusion drive and better graphics. I am a life long pc guy. Doing so much productivity for work, this display is just breathtaking. For productivity work, I just love it. I'm very happy with my purchase.
I ran a Speed test on my iMac about 4 weeks ago Write Speed 1398.2 and Read Speed 1936.0 i have the Late 2015 Model 4.0ghz processor Intel Core i7 with 40gb Ram and AMD Radeon R9 M395X 4096 MB
Not a bad deal, but i would like to know how it would do, exporting 4k & 4k raw footage, through the appropriate apps. Looking at a second rig for this specific job, what do you think? How would it do?
Phil Vierno That was probably a good choice, this machine is way too underpowered for video editing IMO because it used a mobile GPU which gets down clocked due to thermal throttling where as the mac pro is extremely powerful, it's probably the only Mac that could handle my workflow ;)
***** If you're using software that actually makes proper use of the hardware this is good even for 4K video (a lot of UA-camrs use one for this very task). If you live in the Adobe camp though you're going to be let down no matter the machine you get. Their stuff doesn't tend to scale well with high end hardware for some reason.
Ayush Abhinav Not really, it's good for now and the immediate future, but I have bigger plans for my video quality and I'm worried that it may not hold out for the long run. I should be fine though.
randomrazr I think they'll release a new 5K Thunderbolt Display once their line up is all rocking Thunderbolt 3 and the ability to actually output to 5K properly. Or maybe along side a new Mac Pro (with Thunderbolt 3/USB 3.1 with Type-C connector), then flesh out the rest of the line up through 2016 with all the new shiny things.
Tyler Simpson Well in my experience, HDD's start at around 110 when new and slow down to about 70-80, depending on the drive and how full it is. I've never heard of a hard drive that does 200. I don't even think Western Digital's black series can do 200
Paul Hojda a normal Seagate has around 230 MB/s, which retails around 70 dollars for 2 Terabytes... PCIe based SSDs are the way to go, over 1500 MB /s speed. Which you already have in the Macbook Pros. Here you could have even RAID setup with 2x 512 GB or so. But no, apple charges for nothing again.
Paul Hojda Just tested to see, my seagated clocked 220 mbs and its a year old ( isn't my main drive) and its like the cheapest hard drive you can buy ( 59 CAD on new egg )
GorgeousFortress Well in that case HDD's seem to have quickned up since the last time i've bought one. I remember when I got my Samsung HDD some 5 years ago and was really impressed at the fact that it got 136mbps
I just did that Final Cut Pro X render test on my Hackintosh, equipped with a GTX 970 (non-overclocked) and an i5 4690k running at 4.3GHz. The entire project took 2:44 to render. Considering, that I only spent about 1000 bucks on it, I'm very pleased :D
Fucking hell. That video export test REALLY shows how SLOW Premiere Pro is. I just exported the whole thing from Final Cut Pro X in around 40 seconds. It took 4 mins in Premiere Pro. I'm running a late 2013 27" iMac with maxed out specs for reference (using 3TB Fusion Drive rather than SSD though). Adobe need to sort their shit out and properly support OpenCL (and GPU acceleration in general). That is abysmal.
TalesOfWar that has to do with the fact that adobe is mostly used on windows and osx is more for the "prosumer" they have no need to update or fix it. all the pros use windows workstations
Ashish Patel It's shit on Windows too. I've run the same tests on Windows and OS X using the same projects and versions of Premiere Pro on the exact same machine and it's about the same on both platforms. It's slightly smoother on OS X (mostly when scrubbing through footage) but beyond that there's no noticeable difference. Adobe are just crap at optimising their software. Look at Flash. I know they bought it, but they've owned it for 10 years now and it's hardly any better. Oh and apparently around 40% of Adobe's paying customers are Mac users. Quite a high percentage given the overall market share of both platforms.
TalesOfWar 40% on macs is because the lack of software...on windows there's a tone of software to be used. and you arent comparing similar speced or priced windows machines. im sure it would be significantly more on windows. only reason is that most of the people in the industry dont use macs and use windows or linux. flash is a joke, html 5 is better or atleast has better possibility
bet lets be serious most of the people buying this imac are going to be surfing the web and facebook. the ones that need editing wont go anywhere near this especially with all the weird issues that people have with it. like randomly going into sleep and shutting down.
You mean a less than standard 18karat gold, because it's Apple Gold. Not to mention you can get gold plating to make it look pretty much exactly the same for only $400.
YuneShik You can make it LOOK the same, but it isn't actually the same. Kind of like how people used to try and make their Windows install LOOK like a Mac, but it'd never RUN like one.
TalesOfWar Except it pretty much looks the same? And that's a very moronic comparison, considering the hardware(specs) and software is exactly the same. And Apple Gold has less gold anyways than the standard 18k.
Man that thing looks sweet!! i just got the 13" retina macbook pro and its my first retina display on a computer and I'm super impressed with it so far!
well its terrible for gaming even with minecraft and thats why i returned it and ordered a $1000 with parts literally three times better. Plus i didn't just get it for gaming because that would be ridiculous
Definitely saving up a check or two for this bad boy😋 most people don't like it cause they can't afford it, but the people that can, well they don't have a problem with it.
Think about the custom PC you can build for 2000$ .. ya sure you're not gonna cram a 5K display in that budget, but you can certainly get a decent 1440P or 4K display (or a couple 1080P monitor) and thats more enough for content creator. That PC will outperform that Mac in every possible way (and not overheat/throttle while doing it). IMO 5K is kinda pointless at this point
BoneStudios15 Take NCIX for exemple they just charge 50$ to assemble the PC. install windows on it and ship the whole system assembled right to your door ;)
Then you have a big stupid cpu tower, that NOBODY wants, yeah I'd rather have this nice beautiful iMac than build a "gaming" PC cause that's what most people cry about, and assuming since you're building a PC its mostly for gaming. this iMac is the luxury of computers, looks amazing on your desk and performs good as well. Sooo why order parts and wait about a week or two, waiting for them to come in when I can walk in an Apple Store get this, and go home and I'm ready to go. So the PC faster? Okay, yeah I don't need a light fast computer m8 as long as a web page loads in 8 seconds I'm good. But this Mac would out last a PC. Remember this. You could buy a cheaper PC but you'll end up paying more for it.
The Kids in Africa yo, aesthetic is not everything. if you see like pixar or dreamworks studio you will see custom pc everywhere. btw not all pc case are that ugly ya know
To be honest... $1,999 is a pretty fucking good deal for a 5K computer. And its not just any computer, its a fockin' iMac. Which is weird, Apple never gives good deals on anything.
Can we use an external fan to cool the iMac 5K when its temperature getting so high? I use the fan to cool my Macbook Pro 17" 2009 when its getting so hot due to video downloading and watching.
About a month and a half ago, I got the 2014 5K iMac from Best Buy. With pricing protection, I got it at a sale price of $2099. Regardless, I would go for the 2014 model and upgrade the RAM with some Crucial sticks. I edit photos professionally (36MP photos at 75Mb a piece) and do light video work. I don't think you'll find a much more enjoyable experience for the price.
This computer is only $1799 at best buy right now and the one with the older model with the fusion drive is $2099. That's a pretty darn good sale they are having.
***** Wouldn't you admit that Apple are just being annoying by not releasing a 5K cinema display, as any serious creative professional working with 4K footage will just be using a Mac Pro?
Late 2015 model iMac 27-Inch Desktop 5K Retina (4.0Ghz Core i7 Quad Core, 16GB RAM, 4GB Video, 3.1TB Fusion Drive) got it for 1600 with Magic Mouse / keyboard 2 . Did I get a good deal ?
***** good luck in performing in every way without a 5k display add the 5k in and you will be above 3500$ now if the display costs 1900 $ then try to build a pc for 100 to match the imac price and performance and have the 5k display... there won't be more then JUST the case of the pc ^^
Really confused - the 2015 is faster than the maxed 2014 Mac because the GPU was getting too hot, but then it's implied that the thermal design is consistent from the 2014 to the 2015 5K iMac at the end of the video. Why was the 2015 faster at the FCP X rendered sequence by 40 seconds, in spite of the lower-speced hardware and especially when it failed in nearly every other test? More optimization, a la the 2016 Macbook Pro?
I can see this is an old video, but i'd like to ask if you ended up regretting getting the i5 with the M290 2GB? I have the same 5K iMac and its underwhelming when it comes to photoshop and lightroom. I got the computer as a holiday gift, so I didn't choose the specs myself. So just wondering if you ended up using it up until now or if you ended up upgrading to something else? Im thinking about selling it and going with the new 2016 MacBook pro 15" with the radeon 455. Just wondering how it worked out for you, thanks. Subscribed!
Great video. I need to upgrade to a new desktop after my old dell pc ( junk) died out on me. I am interested in an iMac 27 but my sister is encouraging me to get an hp because of the touch screen. What do you guys think? I think the touch screen is something that great but not for a desktop!!
Great review. Unfortunately the biggest issue for this iMac is the graphic card. I've just switched on a PC. With a Nvidia Graphic Card, my render time is nearly half of your iMac for After Effect and Premier Pro. It's too bad because I really liked my iMac I just sell. And this iMac Retina is really great for team crispy. I hope that Metal on El Capitan will really improve the performance with Adobe products. Otherwise, I think that many professional will switch to a PC computer only to be able to use a Nvidia graphic card
Good review. I already ordered the 5k. I am look forward to it. The specs are great. I find the design and features really worth it. I have the 4.0 processor. 8g (b/c I can upgrade that), 1tb fusion. The best thing is with apple you can get a student discount and do payment plans through apple store! The imac pros are just not enough for their price point anymore. Mine just died. Hopefully fix it soon
i have an outdated mid 2009 macbook pro with upgraded 512gb ssd and a maxed out 8gb memory. i use it for final cut pro x, its not perfect but it does the job. should i get a 15inch macbook pro 256ssd with core i7? or the iMac 27 5k 3.2 quad core i5 and keep the old macbook for portability?
What is the best upgrades for gaming? I don't want to go full upgrades, but I don't want the base model either... What would be the best thing to upgrade? Storage (fusion), RAM, GHz, or graphics card?
Which should i get, the macbook pro retina 13" 2015 or this ? Im mainly a person who like to watch videos/movies and i would love to game on a computer even though i have a ps4 and im not in college yet so I really dont need a laptop but i would love to like go anywhere with my computer
Nice review sir. :) So what do you think about the MacBook Pro refresh, any upcoming videos for that? I got one myself but am curious to know what you think. :)
You say crazy to go for the slightly cheaper 27 inch? What about the fact that the high resolution takes so much juice to push? Couldnt you bet better off?
Hey man, awesome review! I just had a question regarding photo editing. I use lightroom to edit my photos and from what I hear it's painfully slow for everyone. I wonder if you have tested LR on this machine? I don't do video so that's not an issue for me
I wanted to test your After Effects thing to see how fast it runs on my PC. But I'm still running CS5. I heard you can save CC as CS6, Then open it in CS6 and save it to CS5.
I have a mid 2010 that is running slow. I put 16 gb in and found out it will not work and just started up and shutdown. Any idea what I can do to stop the spinning wheel of death and make it faster again. I don't game or anything like that. Thanks.

Nice review. BTW I tested my PC (few years old - i7 2600K / 16GB RAM / SSD EVO 840 / GTX 660) with your render test and I am pretty impressed with my score. Premiere Pro CC 2015 render the timeline in 1:50 with music under the clips and in 2:13 with music behind all clips. The After Effects benchmark doesnt work for me. I have missing clips in the file. Thanks for benchmark.
+Crossbeats Music Production Not at all, the only thing I have experienced is that after 3 minutes playing any kind of game the fans go loud (you usually can't even hear them) other than that it works perfectly, if you work with graphics you'd probably want to calibrate the colors tho
Hi, Jonathan. Great videos as always. I have a couple of questions concerning the iMac that I'm hoping you might be able to help me with. I am originally from the UK, currently living in Canada and moving back to London in July and am thinking of getting an iMac. I've done some research and discovered that if I buy an iMac in Canada it'll be about $765 (or £402) cheaper than if I buy the same iMac in the UK. My question(s) is this - will buying an iMac in Canada null & void the warranty when I get back to the UK? What are the pro's and con's of buying it here and taking it back with me? (Apart from saving myself £402, of course) Lastly, if I do buy it here and take it on the plane with me, should I put it in the hold or take it as carry-on? I less important question I know, but I'm still interested in your opinion. Thanks, Martin.
Agreed with having flash storage as the internal option. I might just be looking for that rather than Fusion or anything involving mechanical usage. :)
Apple dropped a $1,999 5K iMac with Retina display and here's how it performs!
*Make sure to hit that like button/share if you enjoyed!*
I loved the video and I was very informative :)
So your on #teamcrispy

$1999 is a pretty great deal for this iMac. Up next, 8K.
Great work Jonathan!

yes

200 mbps for a mechanical HDD is actually pretty amazing O.o

DAT Target lamp tho!
Oh and Shila on the boot up was legit! Apple needs that now.
Tomas Villegas I'd pay for that mod lol
The presentation and the the video work is world class
Who think that for the next gen iMac they should add rose gold, gold, and space gray (and maybe space black if they do it on the iPhone 7)
ikr
I totally agree with you although since I've just bought one of these ill be really pissed off if they bring one out in rose gold anytime soon lol
ShawneeD i really want to See that colours on the iMac 🖥 😁
im getting the 27 with FD fro 1850 from BB by the end of the year
Y was this re uploaded
Oh ok, thanks!
Is it worth upgrading the 290X to the 295X for the iMac? Will be using it for Illustrator, Photoshop, Logic, video editing and some gaming.
How can this be less expensive than the watch?
Joel Chr it's not made of gold.
You mean a less than standard 18karat gold, because it's Apple Gold. Not to mention you can get gold plating to make it look pretty much exactly the same for only $400.
Joel Chr This was a very cringe-worthy comment.
Eyyyy, its 2 years old!
like the little touches it was made.... "Lebron James" hahahah
Henry Prz :D
***** your videos are both funny and informative
Man that thing looks sweet!! i just got the 13" retina macbook pro and its my first retina display on a computer and I'm super impressed with it so far!
When you decide if you should buy this iMac... JUST DO IT!
Says the guy with "android" in his name, but no hate :)
michael sinaie well my name is "Andrew" so I had to make it work so that is why... I am using a 2014 iMac right now so...lol
michael sinaie What's wrong with it? I use Mac and Android, that's great for me. And I used to use iPhone.
well its terrible for gaming even with minecraft and thats why i returned it and ordered a $1000 with parts literally three times better. Plus i didn't just get it for gaming because that would be ridiculous
Definitely saving up a check or two for this bad boy😋 most people don't like it cause they can't afford it, but the people that can, well they don't have a problem with it.
Really dig your studio, man! Looks like a great place to live
Not everybody has the time/wants to build a computer.
BoneStudios15 Take NCIX for exemple they just charge 50$ to assemble the PC. install windows on it and ship the whole system assembled right to your door ;)
Benoit Levesque At the same time, some people just prefer OS X over Windows.
The Kids in Africa yo, aesthetic is not everything. if you see like pixar or dreamworks studio you will see custom pc everywhere. btw not all pc case are that ugly ya know
the 5k imac without the black bezels will make it look so sleek! i hope apple will take that concept into idea.
To be honest... $1,999 is a pretty fucking good deal for a 5K computer. And its not just any computer, its a fockin' iMac. Which is weird, Apple never gives good deals on anything.
are you using a hard drive/hdd, fusion drive or flash/ssd iMac?
also what type of storage would be best for gaming out of these three
So Apple computers can be used for gaming? I feel like I've been lied to.
Ryan Amberger Any computer can really, but only few can play games well. Mac's are pretty great but there aren't many games available for them.
Ryan Amberger install Windows via Boot Camp and you can run anything
Ryan Amberger Macs are made for people that make content and a creative living, not sit around and play games.
Doesn't mean you can't do both
Lol @"Macs are made for people who make content...". Damn, didn't know all those Starbucks bums were creative pros at work.
Can we use an external fan to cool the iMac 5K when its temperature getting so high? I use the fan to cool my Macbook Pro 17" 2009 when its getting so hot due to video downloading and watching.
"LeBron James" 😂😂😂😂
About a month and a half ago, I got the 2014 5K iMac from Best Buy. With pricing protection, I got it at a sale price of $2099. Regardless, I would go for the 2014 model and upgrade the RAM with some Crucial sticks.
I edit photos professionally (36MP photos at 75Mb a piece) and do light video work. I don't think you'll find a much more enjoyable experience for the price.
"Under 2 grand" 1 dollar under 2 grand....
Still under 2 grand
This computer is only $1799 at best buy right now and the one with the older model with the fusion drive is $2099. That's a pretty darn good sale they are having.
Dat screen display is more defined than my life 😪.
That's no biggie. You could've said that about those 480p phones that launched back in the day :P.
Love how you do your videos. I know nothing about how a computer is engineered bt I don't exit your videos 30 seconds in. 😂
#TeamCrispy
***** Definitely haha
***** Wouldn't you admit that Apple are just being annoying by not releasing a 5K cinema display, as any serious creative professional working with 4K footage will just be using a Mac Pro?
Late 2015 model
iMac 27-Inch Desktop 5K Retina (4.0Ghz Core i7 Quad Core, 16GB RAM, 4GB Video, 3.1TB Fusion Drive) got it for 1600 with Magic Mouse / keyboard 2 . Did I get a good deal ?
Just bought the i5 late 2015 for 1300
Literally 20 minutes ago
Talk to fast
my MBP retina has this horse power as well. Maybe for the dream desk Ill miss this one and instead get a good looking 4k monitor
What a waste of money. Good review though.
Look at the price of a 5k display. Then tell me it's a waste of money!
zorkor Waste of money? Ha.
***** But if you got a beast computer that was even decent you would not be able to afford a 5k display and have it all under 2000$
***** That's simply untrue. Did you even watch the review? The R9 more than handles the resolution...
***** good luck in performing in every way without a 5k display add the 5k in and you will be above 3500$
now if the display costs 1900 $ then try to build a pc for 100 to match the imac price and performance and have the 5k display... there won't be more then JUST the case of the pc ^^
***** please respond
Sup!

Great Apple iMac review. I guess I'm crazy I went with a regular iMac and upgraded it and not the 5k iMac but that was a while ago.
Subscribed!
So long story short. Is this a good computer for go pro and drone video editing?
vegas wajeel yes
Nice Shia LaBeouf edit :) great video overall, that iMac is looking soo good rn :)
Could you do the best possible 2000$ build, including monitor, keyboard, etc..?
Can you give a list of USB joysticks and USB game controllers that work with iMac 5k for games?
Didn't you upload this earlier?
Using a 2011 21.5" iMac and I still feel great.
Educational video! I'm ready to buy one now. Where did you get that desk?
fastest imac unboxing ever seen !
What was that silhouette inside the apple logo during the boot up test?
Ariff Suffian Shia LaBeouf

What mac application do you use for email and calendar? Do you use stock?
hey Jonathan, i acknowledge and appreciate the gains youve made. js. srs
Your latest videos are great. Really enjoy the quality and the time you put into them. 😉
Would you still recommend if you can't afford flash storage or a fusion drive?
Great breakdown and clean edit - like the review, bro!
I'm getting this soon and I was wondering if the oculus rift worked with it?
Still waiting for a 4k 21.5 inch iMac
Except the MacBooks or it's the only non retina thing left
What is the best upgrades for gaming? I don't want to go full upgrades, but I don't want the base model either... What would be the best thing to upgrade? Storage (fusion), RAM, GHz, or graphics card?
Wow my computer with an overclocked 5820k 4.6ghz ang a gtx 760 4g encoded the premire pro sequence in 2:08. Better than even I expected.
Dude the animations kick assss!!!
Another great review! I'm impressed by these, I started my own tech channel and I know how hard it can be making these! Keep up the good work!
Which should i get, the macbook pro retina 13" 2015 or this ? Im mainly a person who like to watch videos/movies and i would love to game on a computer even though i have a ps4 and im not in college yet so I really dont need a laptop but i would love to like go anywhere with my computer
I love how he put shia on the start up in the apple logo xD
Hey Jonathan, does this run well with minecraft without the thing heating up so much?
Nice review sir. :) So what do you think about the MacBook Pro refresh, any upcoming videos for that? I got one myself but am curious to know what you think. :)
You say crazy to go for the slightly cheaper 27 inch? What about the fact that the high resolution takes so much juice to push? Couldnt you bet better off?
Is it really cheaper as the Fusion drive has gone back to a normal HD ?
Hey man, awesome review! I just had a question regarding photo editing. I use lightroom to edit my photos and from what I hear it's painfully slow for everyone. I wonder if you have tested LR on this machine? I don't do video so that's not an issue for me
I wanted to test your After Effects thing to see how fast it runs on my PC. But I'm still running CS5.
I heard you can save CC as CS6, Then open it in CS6 and save it to CS5.
1:02 What exactly is on the Apple logo on the screen???
Hey Man have you had any issues with screen lag? for example zooming into pictures etc.
(Apart from saving myself £402, of course)
Lastly, if I do buy it here and take it on the plane with me, should I put it in the hold or take it as carry-on? I less important question I know, but I'm still interested in your opinion.
Thanks,
Martin.
Agreed with having flash storage as the internal option. I might just be looking for that rather than Fusion or anything involving mechanical usage. :)
Im gonna get a new pc soon. Anything useful from $600-$1,000?
