    Its cool that even his warm up exercises sound like a Duane Denison riff.

  • @Racosz

    Double chromatic mediant. This cool warm-up exercise could be expanded alternating the type of third (minor and major and viceversa) between chord roots, in order to have four or more chords instead of two: C major, Eb minor, G major, Bb minor, D major and so on... It's a really challenging exercise, full of chromaticism for your fingers and ears.
    There's nothing cooler than a musician deepening his/her knowledge of his/her instrument further than playing the same obvious riffs. Duane Denison is an inspiring guitarist.

    Dear Duane. When I was young and shopping around Sound Exchange, I found you. But then I lost you. Yet I have every stinking record you were on. Also the rabid cat stuff.
    I needed this video in '87. Thanks a lot.

    I can’t imagine you doing this exercise around Yow. This should be a JL song! Also, to all y’all asking for tabs due to not seeing the neck ... you’re using the wrong organs. Close your eyes.

    Since I can assume most here are Duane fans and guitar players, for the love of the damn spaghetti monster can someone PLEASE tell me what is the first chord in Tomahawk - Laredo after the Cat in the Bag in the River situation. My ears no bueno! I want the right one two I have a decent approximation already! Cheers

      with the following high notes being (from g) 14 16 17, 13 14 16, 11 13 14, 7 10 10, and the two chords struck afterwards are a chord made of c and f#, and a d power chord, for example (from low d) 434 000

    Nice little lesson and sounds awesome "Duane-like" but I really need some help in terms of harmonic clarification. Duane says "Superimposing two triads, a C major triad and an A minor triad starting from E flat minor (a minor third above C)". The first triad is definitely a C major triad, but the second one is an E flat minor triad, which definitely is not "diatonic" as the lessons title implies. There’s absolutely no A minor sounding in this line. Furthermore I don’t understand "superimposing" in this context as there’s no underlying harmony. Playing an E flat minor triad above C gives a C half-dimished Arpeggio or in a C major context a lot of altered tones (#9, b5, b7), which is more C7alt. sounding...

    • @gjh400
      @gjh400 10 років тому

      exactly -- It's an obvious "over-intellectualizing" lesson by so called experts- I think to belittle the "student", certain "artists" should stick to sounds not words.

    • @colinedmunds2238
      @colinedmunds2238 10 років тому +6

      perhaps he meant "a minor triad" instead of "A minor triad" using a to mean singular, not A as in a pitch

    • @shesaidpurr
      @shesaidpurr 10 років тому +5

      not even perhaps, but obviously. also, implying that duane doesn't know what he's talking about is as weird as saying that walt disney never held a pen in his hand.

    • @conradseymour
      @conradseymour 10 років тому +1

      shesaidpurr indeed. he makes it clear at 1:21 that it is an E flat minor triad. maybe just a case of overemphasising one of his spoken syllables.

    •  9 років тому +2

      Jim Schweizer lol, it's "a minor triad", not "A minor triad". So EbGBb.

    came back to try and learn this because its a cool exercise. dude honestly give the tabs on this please. the camera doesnt show which strings your playing when you move up the neck and its certainly not close enough to see your fretting hand. do you guys watch these videos after you record them to make sure they are teachable?

    His choice of how to play the triads is terrible. The first octave he plays in the C Major triad could be played easier barring a C Major Chord. Third finger on C (5th string, 3rd fret) Middle finger on E (4th string, 2nd fret), and open G string for the G note. The Ebm chord could be played a lot easier by pinky on Eb (5th string, 6th fret), Middle finger on Gb (4th string, 4th fret), and 1st finger on Bb (3rd string, 3rd fret). Moving to the second octave, the C Major chord is easier played with third finger on C (4th string, 10th fret), Middle finger on E (3rd string, 9th fret), and 1st finger on G (2nd string, 8th fret), moving to the Ebm chord with 3rd finger on Eb (3rd string, 8th fret), middle finger on Gb (2nd string, 7th fret), and 1st finger on Bb (1st string, 6th fret). In other words it would have been easier to play all those chord shapes using chord shape positions at an angular position, like a chord is fingered. He could have even played the Ebm in the 11th position with 3rd finger on Eb (4th string, 13th fret), middle finger on Gb (3rd string, 11th fret), and 1st finger on Bb (2nd string, 11th fret).

    • @tgrimes175

      +skaifan1 Well my point is the warm up is not good, because it is teaching students to play non practical. Great warm ups should coincide with playing practically with practical playing performance concepts. THis warm up is actually anti productive and it teaches BAD/TERRIBLE fingerings for playing.
