Wow dudes... I soooo agree whit all of you! Most dangerous live act of the 90''..and beyond. Saw them for the first time here in Montréal in 1990 or something.... Never looked back after that.. I was Hooked
That slurred arpeggio is deviously hard for how simple it looks. I actually got to take some time to get it down. Incredible guitar playiing, Duane is a legend.
Duane is such an underrated guitar player. I love his sound too. It’s a distorted clean sound that is hard to replicate. Love how he makes his palm muting sound like a clock sometimes
every musician I've met who was obsessed with music (and every weirdo) all loved Jesus Lizard. If you play this for people who aren't really into music, they hate it lol I think only because David Yow could never make american idol, but his vocals were amazing. They wrote some of the best riffs ever recorded and made incredible albums
He's a great guitarist/musician, not only rock but he uses jazz scales/chords in Hardcore. He's probably the biggest influence to a band called Dry Cleaning, which is a post-punk band from the south London. A Great artist.
Duane, this is an awesome lesson! I've been listening to Jesus Lizard since my college days 30 years ago and I've ALWAYS wondered how this riff was played! So good to see it's done right from the source! I was just listening to GOAT today @ work and it does not get old at all. An excellent lesson from one of the most versatile guitarists on the planet. Many thanks Mr Denison!
I grew up in the mid 00s scene listening to mostly hardcore and metalcore bands but I was also really into Mathrock bands and grind. I listened to a LOT of Daughters when I was younger who have a very clear influence from The Jesus Lizard. Listened to a lot of Arab on Radar and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The influences didn't make sense to me when I was a kid but now that I'm older and I'm revisiting music from my young adulthood and finding their influences it's clear as day. If you would like to listen to a heavier, more chaotic version of TJL I implore anyone who reads this comment to listen to the band Daughters from Rhode Island
The Jesus Lizard definitely stamped their influence on younger bands , but when it comes to RI bands none stamped bigger on them than their very own Six Finger Satellite.
@@_Captain_Benji_ hell songs is definitely the album with the most obvious influence from the Jesus Lizard but you won’t get what you want is also incredible
Came into metalcore after the youth crew revival of the late 90s that laid the groundwork for contemporary metalcore... was a prog rocker/punk before that. I had always loved math rock, noise and post stuff but you put it really well "the influences didn't make sense to me when I was a kid". I'm 31 now and I have this experience with a lot of other music from my youth now with different bands.
Wow I've been playing guitar for over 20 years and this totally blew my mind! Wish I'd gotten into the Jesus Lizard sooner but it's only just been happening thanks our new drummer... awesome stuff!
Key-oo-al! I always wondered about that part. Never attempted to play it. Just wondered... And I always liked it a lot. Never disliked it. But always liked it. Now I am glad to know how to play it. Haven't tried it yet. But I know how to now.
No wonder this amazing little riff is the thing that people ask him about the most, even if Duane's career is chock-full of amazing sounds and creative techniques. When I first heard it I literally jumped out of my chair and said 'what the fuck was that??' It's somehow strangely comforting to know that so many people around the globe feel the same about a 4-second excerpt from a song
What a professional you are, Duane! How many times u ve been playing that riff while your bandmate was puking, with his bellend out or touching it ir any sort of things 😂
That's a good part of what made The Jesus Lizard so great live. The rest of the band was so tight and solid and sounded even better than they did on the records while Yow was just a chaotic force of nature.
what the heeeelll? its really that simple, ive been listening to that song for a good like 2 months and curiosity finally got to me so i watched this video, i thought that it was gonna be some sorta nutty-ass widdlywiddly solo sorta shape
Why do I feel a need to hear the song quite often and many times it is being triggered by some oddity that I have just witnessed or heard. Greatest bar band from Generation X. Sorry, Clutch but I love you guys too!
Met both Duane and Mac on separate occasions xD awesome guys! There's a shit tonne of decent alternative rock bands since lizard, I wasn't even alive when their last studio record dropped in 98. BUT it terms of technical musicianship, the only band at this level in the genre currently is OH SEES. Music comes from the soul though, I'm not dispirited!
that riff gave me nightmares seriously.. just as i was at that point in my life of: i can play anything, come at me! that one riff blew my mind, still not learned how to play it.

Hey it's Duane Denison explaining how to play one of the best songs in rock n roll history of one of the best records in rock n roll history.
By one of the best bands in rock n roll history.

Agreed. He’s so nasty
Hahahaha
Seriously, PG, give this man a regular video series! He should keep doing it from his house, too, preferably fireside.
Facts 👍
Exactly
This man made some of the best rock riffs on guitar
You spelled some wrong, it's A L L, btw
That slurred arpeggio is deviously hard for how simple it looks. I actually got to take some time to get it down. Incredible guitar playiing, Duane is a legend.
dude i love that the jesus lizard is still getting recognition that is fully deserved
Duane is the real deal. Incredible talent and he actually wrote me back, pen and paper, way back in the mid 1990s.
A gentleman ❤️

The Duane Denison chord arpeggio slide. Hall of fame! 🙌🌟
I love how he’s a veritable gentleman. And just writes the most abstract demonic atonal non metal riffs. I love metal by the way 👍
The Jesus Lizard's "Then Comes Dudley" - Riff Rundown 1224pm 18.12.23 The Denison/Kimball Trio riffing there...
I wish every musician can explain what they do as articulately and to the point music theory wise as he just did.
Its a really nice homage to Miles Davis' "Great Expectations" 74'. Denison makes it his own and it really is quite magical.
😯!!
F*ckin' hell, yes! Thank you, you made my day :)
More Denison videos please!!!
Probably the best guitar player i've ever seen live
from the man himself! Duane is the most underrated, inventive and unique player!
More Denison, give him a vlog
Agreed! He seems to enjoy it, too. Beyond being one of my favorite musicians I think he would be a great UA-cam educator. I'd watch him religiously

@1:18 "And then there's this..." (proceeds to melt everybody's face off)
Incredible knowledge and playing, now that's rare! Absolutely love some of the riffs he writes.
Super stoked for this to happen in 2024! After me telling everybody that J. L. is the shizzle. For the last 30 years!! Much Love from Germoney

I love how Bob Ross he is talking about playing a song by one of the most harsh, dangerous, punk bands in history. So good! 👌
My old bandmate compared me to this guy and damn I'm flattered.
'Rub it on me Duaaaaneee'. f*cking Genius ♥️

you hear a ton of that technique on the denison kimball trio records...
Hey Duane! Love you long time. You forgot to mention Miles Davis' Great Expectations on Big Fun. Ha!
Jack Shaw He doesn't need to mention it. It's the bass player David Sims who could mention it .
great to see a Mompou score on his piano.
